When romantic partners argue over things like finances, jealousy, or other interpersonal issues, they tend to employ their current feelings as fuel for a heated argument. But thinking about the future helps overcome relationship conflicts, according to a University of Waterloo study just published online in Social Psychological and Personality Science. Alex Huynh, a doctoral candidate in psychology is the lead author of the study, which he published with Igor Grossmann from the University of Waterloo, and Daniel Yang from Yale University.
Previous research has shown that third-perspective reasoning can be a positive strategy for reconciliation(调解) of interpersonal struggles. Huynh and his collaborators investigated whether similar benefit can be induced by simply thinking about the future. Study participants were instructed to reflect on a recent conflict with a romantic partner or a close friend. One group of participants were then asked to describe how they would feel about the conflict one year in the future, while another group was asked to describe how they feel in the present.
The team examined participants’ written responses through a text-analysis program for their use of pronouns — such as I, me, she, he. These choices of pronouns were used to capture participants’ focus on the feelings and behaviour of those involved in the conflict. Written responses were also examined for forgiveness and reinterpreting the conflict more positively, both of which implied the participants’ use of reasoning strategies.
The researchers found that envisioning future relationship affected both participants’ focus on their feelings, and their reasoning strategies. As a result, participants reported more positivity about their relationship altogether, especially when study participants extended their thinking about the relationship a year into the future.
“Our study demonstrates that adopting a future-oriented perspective in the context of a relationship conflict — reflecting on how one might feel a year from now — may be a valuable coping tool for one’s psychological happiness and relationship well-being,” said Huynh.
4. What do romantic partners do in face of most disagreements
A. They lose faith in their future. B. They focus on their present feelings.
C. They look forward to a fierce conflict. D. They care more about financial problems.
5. What does the underlined word “induced” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Caused. B. Explained.
C. Reduced. D. Improved.
6. What do we know about the study
A. All the study participants described how they felt both in the present and in the future.
B. Study participants described their recent relationship with their romance partners or friends.
C. A text-analysis program was employed to examine participants’ use of negative words.
D. The reasoning strategies in participants’ written responses were well worthy of note.
7. What can be the best title of the text
A. You have a year to solve your interpersonal problems!
B. Thinking about future is essential for relationship maintenance!
C. Your current feelings are the real cause of your heated arguments!
D. Beneficial reasoning is a positive strategy for reconciliation!
C
When kids melt down in the middle of a crowded store or at a holiday dinner with extended family, it can be extremely frustrating. But parents can help kids learn self-control and teach them how to respond without just acting on impulse (冲动).
Teaching self-control is one of the most important things that parents can do for their kids because these skills are some of the most important for success later in life. By learning self-control, kids can make appropriate decisions and respond to stressful situations in ways that can yield positive outcomes. For example, if you say that you’re not serving ice cream until after dinner, your child may cry, plead, or even scream in the hopes that you will give in. But with self-control, your child can understand that a temper tantrum (发脾气) means you’ll take away the ice cream for good and that it’s wiser to wait patiently.
Difficult as it may be, resist the urge to yell when you’re disciplining your kids. Instead, be persistent and matter of fact. During a child’s meltdown, stay calm and explain that yelling, throwing a tantrum, and slamming doors are unacceptable behaviors that have consequences. Your actions will show that tantrums won’t get kids the upper hand. For example, if your child gets, upset in the grocery store after you’ve explained why you won’t buy candy, don’t give in – thus demonstrating that the tantrum was both unacceptable and ineffective. Also, consider speaking to your child’s teachers about classroom settings and appropriate behavior expectations. Ask if problem-solving is taught or demonstrated in school.
And model good self-control yourself. If you’re in an annoyed situation in front of your kids, tell them why you’re frustrated and then discuss potential solutions to the problem. For example, if you’ve misplaced your keys, instead of getting upset, tell your kids the keys are missing and then search for them together. If they don’t turn up, take the next constructive step. Show that good emotional control and problem solving are the ways to deal with a difficult situation.
8. What is the main idea of paragraph 2
A. Impulsive responses lead to frustration.
B. Kids’ melting down is a common phenomenon.
C. Parents should help kids make decisions appropriately.
D. Teaching kids self-control is a must for their future success.
9. What is the parents’ best attitude towards a child’s meltdown
A. Firm and factual.
B. Calm and tolerant.
C. Cautious and objective.
D. Annoyed and disapproving.
10. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in paragraph 3
A. Emotional outburst is unexpected behaviors.
B. Kids shouldn’t be responsible for their behaviors alone.
C. Temper loss won’t give the kids a position of advantage.
D. Tantrums are ineffective in interpersonal communications.
11. What message is conveyed in the last paragraph
A. Slow and steady wins the race.
B. Good example is the best sermon.
C. Experience is the mother of wisdom.
D. Success comes from thorough self-control.
D
The Google Brain team has been working on computing systems called “neural networks”—systems that were designed based on how neurons work in the human brain.
This time, they gave a mission to three of the neural networks, which they named Alice, Bob and Eve. Each of the networks had its own job—Alice sent messages to Bob, Eve tried to “eavesdrop”(偷听) and find out the messages, and Alice and Bob had to figure out a way to hide the messages from Eve. All the help that Alice and Bob got from the researchers before the mission began was made up of a set of numbers, which Eve didn’t have access to.
At first, Alice was not very good at sending secret messages. But slowly it worked on a way to encrypt(加密) them—putting information into a special code so that others could not understand it if they got the information—using he numbers given by researchers. And after practice, Bob also came to be able to decrypt(解密) Alice’s messages. Without the numbers or keys, Eve failed to understand Alice’s “speech” most of the time.
This test is considered a big step in the development of computers’ learning skills. “Computing with neural networks on this scale has only become possible in the last few years, so we truly are at the beginning of what’s possible, ” Joe Sturonas of US encryption company PKWARE told New Scientist magazine.
Unfortunately, the test happened only one week after UK physicist Stephen Hawking, While speaking at Cambridge University, warned how AI(artificial intelligence)could develop a will of its own. This could be “either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to human being”, he said.
But just as Sturonas pointed out, no matter what the possibilities of computers are in the future, they are just starting out. We still have plenty of time to work out a solution before they get anywhere near becoming a threat to humanity.
12. For what purpose was the test conducted
A. To study how neurons work in the human brain.
B. To study how computing systems work and learn.
C. To find out a more effective way to keep secrets.
D. To find out a more powerful way to break the codes.
13. How does the computing system work in the test
A. encrypting—messages—code—messages—decrypting
B. messages—encrypting—code—decrypting—messages
C. code—messages—encrypt—decrypting—messages
D. messages—code—decrypting—encrypting—messages
14. What can we learn from Hawking’s warning
A. AI must be a blessing. B. AI should be forbidden.
C. AI is sure to be a failure. D. AI is a double-edged sword.
15. What’s Sturonas attitude towards the development of AI
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful.
C. Puzzled. D. Panicked.

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped pajama (睡衣) top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
Mohi murmured,“Sorry, teacher,”and rushed to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The chuckles(咯咯笑) quickly died down. Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day, it was the pajama top and green sandals.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name at the same time just to see him jump and stop suddenly. When he spotted the merry crowd in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. “Mohi must be listening to music, since he had never played music at school.”Hamed thought. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. The music played on.

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

【10题详解】
猜测句意题。根据文章第三段,“Instead, be persistent and matter of fact. During a child’s meltdown, stay calm and explain that yelling, throwing a tantrum, and slamming doors are unacceptable behaviors that have consequences.”(相反,要坚持不懈,实事求是。在孩子崩溃期间,保持冷静并解释大喊大叫、发脾气和摔门是不可接受的行为,这些行为会产生后果。)以及“if your child gets, upset in the grocery store after you’ve explained why you won't buy candy, don’t give in – thus demonstrating that the tantrum was both unacceptable and ineffective.”(例如,如果你的孩子在你解释了你不买糖果的原因后在杂货店生气,不要屈服——这表明发脾气既不可接受又无效)可知,我们想要孩子知道的是,发脾气不被外人接受,也对你手头的事情没有任何的帮助。

A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful.
C. Puzzled. D. Panicked.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. D 15. A

How does it feel when you solve your problem by yourself Things may not always go as planned, but being resourceful can help you stay calm and work your way out of tricky situations.
Being resourceful means finding smart and creative ways to solve a problem, using whatever resources you have at the time. ____16____ They can also be anything else that’s useful, such as information, advice or your own experience. It also means trusting your instincts, the ability you’re born with, rather than through training and being confident about your ability to face challenges. _____17_____ when we learn to problem solve for ourselves rather than immediately going to others for help, it can help to build our confidence, help us feel more independent, and feel better about making decisions. Being resourceful may not help you avoid problems, but thinking creatively about how you can deal with them will make you feel less stressed and more prepared next time. _____18_____ This can boost self-esteem, that is, how you feel about yourself.

Next, think up as many solutions to the problem as you can. ____19____ Finally, review what has and hasn’t worked, so you’re equipped to deal with a situation next time.
And remember, if you have a tricky problem that you’re unable to solve, then ask a trusted adult for help. ____20____
A. You also learn what you’re good at.
B. Here is how you can be more resourceful.

【19题详解】
该段在讨论遇到困难时,要专注于问题本身,并列出了具体的步骤。上一句“Next, think up as many solutions to the problem as you can.(接下来,想出尽可能多的方法来解决问题)”讲的是“尽可能多地想出一些解决措施”,G选项:然后衡量它们的好坏,选出最佳的一个,其中them指代上一句solutions,G项填到此处最合适。故选G。
【20题详解】
上一句“And remember, if you have a tricky problem that you’re unable to solve, then ask a trusted adult for help.(记住,如果你有一个棘手的问题,你无法解决,然后向一个值得信任的成年人寻求帮助)”表示自己实在解决不了,你还可以求助其他人,D选项意为“没有人是被期望要独自解决所有问题的”,与上文意义一致。故填D。

The following Monday Mohi did not turn up at school.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】As Hamed looked closely through a window, his eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played flawlessly so much so that it sounded like a recording. Then an idea hit Hamed. It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers. Every class had to contribute an item. It was a good chance for Mohito show his talent and be accepted by his classmates. Thinking of that, Hamed left quietly.
When Teacher’s Day came around, Hamed convinced the class to let Mohi perform. Short of ideas, the class agreed. On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school’s clumsiest student walking on stage with a violin. When he started to play, the audience fell silent. Jaws dropped. As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. Mohi became a sensation and had many fans in his final year of school. Mohi and Hamed became the best of friends eventually.
