I heard time and again that creative expression and science were contradictory. When my college roommate concluded with a personality test that I was the “creative” type, the rest of my friends said that couldn’t be right, because “I was a scientist and therefore was not creative.” When I tell people I'm in a chemistry Ph. D. program, they often respond with something along the lines of, “I could never do that because I am more of the creative type.”
At times I have internalized this misconception. I worried my way of thinking would’t fit in with “proper” scientists. In the end though, my desire to pursue a scientific career won out. I figured I would continue to find a way to balance my research with my creative pursuits.
I started during my first year of grad school, when I served as a teacher's assistant for an analytical chemistry lab course. Todd, the professor leading the class, spotted me watching him fix glassware and offered to give me a lesson. I learned how to repair equipment as well as artistic glass blowing techniques. I felt like myself, enjoying my scientific studies while also satisfying my artistic side. But once I finished my teaching assistant duties, finding time for glass blowing became difficult and my research began to suffer. I had a hard time brainstorming innovative solutions. I needed a creative outlet to keep myself going; it just had to fit within my schedule.
This was when I found pottery (陶艺), which I could pursue one evenings and weekends. After my first class, I was addicted. I keep a note book filled with doodles (乱涂) of cup designs inspired by my experiments. Through the challenge of distilling (提炼) my paper into its core concepts in such a way, I gained a better understanding of my project. Pottery has now turned into a way for me to train my brain to be creative.

B. She rescheduled the glass blowing course.
C. She noticed a decline in her blowing skills.
D. She had a temporary setback in her research.
44. The author took up pottery in order to ________.
A. meet new friends B. find peace of mind
C. move ahead in her research D. pursue a career in it
45. What effect did pottery have on the author
A. It reminded her of the golden days at university.
B. It motivated her to be a part-time designer.

The Stanford marshmallow (棉花糖) test was originally conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s. Children aged four to six at a nursery school were placed in a room. A single sugary treat, selected by the child, was placed on a table. Each child was told if they waited for 15 minutes before eating the treat, they would be given a second treat. Then they were left alone in the room. Follow-up studies with the children later in life showed a connection between an ability to wait long enough to obtain a second treat and various forms of success.
As adults we face a version of the marshmallow test every day. We’re not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets — all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to preschoolers.
We are tempted by sugary treats because our ancestors lived in a calorie-poor world, and our brains developed a response mechanism to these treats that reflected their value — a feeling of reward and satisfaction. But as we’ve reshaped the world around us, dramatically reducing the cost and effort involved in obtaining calories, we still have the same brains we had thousands of years ago, and this mismatch is at the heart of why so many of us struggle to resist tempting foods that we know we shouldn’t eat.
A similar process is at work in our response to information. Our formative environment as a species was information-poor, so our brains developed a mechanism that prized new information. But global connectivity has greatly changed our information environment. We are now ceaselessly bombarded (轰炸) with new information. Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our caloric consumption, we also need to be more thoughtful about our information consumption, resisting the temptation of the mental “junk food” in order to manage our time most effectively.
46. What did the children need to do to get a second treat in Mischel’s test
A. Take an examination alone. B. Show respect for the researchers.
C. Share their treats with others. D. Delay eating for fifteen minutes.
47. According to paragraph 3, there is a mismatch between .
A. the calorie-poor world and our good appetites B. the shortage of sugar and our nutritional needs
C. the rich food supply and our unchanged brains D. the tempting foods and our efforts to keep fit
48. What does the author suggest readers do
A. Absorb new information readily. B. Be selective information consumers.
C. Use diverse information sources. D. Protect the information environment.
49. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Eat Less, Read More B. The Bitter Truth about Early Humans
C. The Later, the Better D. The Marshmallow Test for Grownups
D
There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language — all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick and curious If so, we tend to take more chances and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt to change or that we're not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.
50. In the author's eye, one who views personal growth as a process would ________.
A. succeed in climbing up the social ladder
B. grow up from his own achievements
C face difficulties and take up challenges
D. aim high and reach his goal each time
51. Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing
A. Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges.
B. Jane won the first prize in the speech competition.
C. Jerry picked up French during his stay in Paris.
D. Father's salary rose from 5,000 to 7,000.
52. For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following EXCEPT________.
A. being curious about more changes
B. being quick in self-adaptation
C. having an open mind to new experiences
D. staying away from failures and challenges
53. The underlined word “indecisive” can be replaced by ________.
A. unable B. uncertain C. uneasy D. unkind
54. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage
A. It is not so easy to measure personal growth.
B. To try and fail on the new road facing the unknown is unavoidable.
C. People's willingness to face the unknown plays a negative part in personal growth.
D. If you are too shy to take any risks in life, you cannot grow up.
55. The best title for this passage should be ________.
A. Facing New Challenges B. Growth—Product or Process
C Two Basic Ways of Growth D. Overcoming Internal Fears

A daughter complained to her father about her life and how things have been so hard for her.She did not know how she was going to make it and she wanted to give up.She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed that just as one problem was solved another arose.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen, filled three pots with water and placed the fire on high Soon the three pots came to a boil.In one he placed carrots, in the other he placed eggs, and the last he placed ground coffee beans. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word.
The daughter impatiently wondered what he was trying to do. In half an hour he walked over to the stove and turned down the fire.He pulled the carrots out and placed them in the bowl.He pulled the eggs out and placed them in the bowl. Then he ladled(盛)the coffee out and placed it in a cup.Turning to her he asked.“Darling what do you see ”
“Carrots, eggs, and coffee.”she replied.
He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft.He then asked her to take an egg and break it.After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled ege. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. She smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma(芳香).
Humbly, she asked.“What does it mean Father ”
He explained.“Each of them faced the same adversity, however each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard. But after going through boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg was fragile.A thin outer shell protected a liquid center. But after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The coffee beans are unique however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water”

【答案】Hi James,
It’s great to connect with you here on Red Note! I’m more than happy to share some insights about how Chinese high school students use social media.
TikTok is one of the most favored apps for its short videos which cover a wide range of topics from daily life moments to creative arts. WeChat is another essential part of our digital lives where we chat with friends and family and follow official accounts for news and learning resources.
In daily life, I often use social media to keep up with what’s happening around the world and stay connected with friends. Moreover, I enjoy posting content related to traditional festivals, calligraphy, and classic literature on TikTok.
Looking forward to hearing more about your side of the story.
Yours,
Li Jin
