Stand-up comedy in China
Stand-up comedy, originating in the United States, has gained global appeal, including in China. 21 the first Chinese stand-up comedy club was set up in Shenzhen in 2009, this form of entertainment was relatively unknown to most Chinese audiences. But the growing popularity of stand-up comedy in China 22 (demonstrate) that humor has no borders. Another two stand-up comedy industry leaders in China 23 (establish) in 2014 and 2017 respectively.
Wang Xuebin, a professor at the Party School of the CPC, explains 24 stand-up comedy is so popular in China. According to him, the comedy matches modern online edians often talk about current social issues in short and direct ways, 25 fits well with the fast-paced, short videos people enjoy online. The topics are also closely related to young people, who are a key audience. He adds that stand-up comedy is easy to start because it doesn’t require special skills. Anyone, 26 age or gender, can try it. This makes it widely appealing in China.
In a regular comedy show, each comedian usually performs for about 15 minutes. However, in a comedy special (专场) 27 (focus) on one comedian, the performance lasts around 60 minutes. This longer format requires more work on the script (稿), making the content 28 (rich), so the audience always feels it’s worth their time.
Stand-up comedy, with performers’ raw personal struggles 29 (transform) into universally relatable humor, has grown from small, underground clubs to becoming a mainstream part of popular culture. The competition is intense, with new shows constantly appearing and older ones innovating 30 (stay) relevant. One thing is clear: what was once a niche (小众的) activity is now everywhere in China and shows no signs of disappearing.

Your robot driver is on its way
Driving has many downsides: There’s pollution, traffic, finding a place to park. But worst of all are the crashes. In 2023, an estimated 40,990 people were killed in car crashes in the United States.
Reducing traffic crashes should be among the nation’s highest 31 . Behind each one lie many human errors. People get behind the wheel when they are drunk or sleepy, and they text or talk on their phones instead of paying attention to the road. Or they simply 32 road conditions.
Enormous work has gone into reducing these human errors. But data from Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving car unit, suggests that a better strategy might be to take the driver out of the picture and let vehicles be 33 by machines that will never get distracted or drunk, or be 34 to break traffic laws because they’re running late.
Waymo robotaxis have logged 33 million miles and the company’s figures show that Waymo robotaxi vehicles deliver 35 better safety pared with cars driven by humans, Waymo vehicles have been involved in 62 percent fewer police-reported crashes and 78 percent fewer crashes that resulted in injury. Timothy B.Lee, author of the Understanding AI newsletter, pointed out the crashes “were mostly low-speed collisions (碰撞)” that 36 no serious safety risk. “A large majority appeared to be the 37 of the other driver,” Lee said.
It’s too early to know how much self-driving cars could reduce 38 crashes. But it’s reasonable to hope that Waymo will prove safer than human drivers. Governments at all levels should be rushing to knock down regulatory 39 that stand in the way of faster adoption of driverless cars while also ensuring that the companies meet the highest standards for safety and accountability.
In early January, the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association released a proposed policy framework that aims to speed the 40 . The association also calls for a national safety database to provide a better view of crash incidents involving self-driving cars.
III. Reading Comprehension (45分)
Section A (每题1分,共15分)
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Forget the sales, hit the rails
I hate sales fashion shopping: there is no pleasure to be had in finding things reduced to a slim part of the full price I paid four months ago, especially when that same 41 item is still swinging its full-price tag in my cupboard. No, the only good thing about a fashion sale is that it 42 a new season — and the only ones I like, therefore, are those in which the sales racks (挂衣架) sit alongside rails of shiny, previously unseen stock.
When Isay unseen, I mean exactly that. Many of the clothes in store now have neither graced a catwalk nor featured in 43 . Slightly more commercial and often less expensive than their catwalk counterparts, these are the pre-collections: the pearls of the fashion cycle.
There are two “pre” collections: pre-fall will gradually flow to store from June until September, when the clothes will be joined by the 44 autumn pieces, previously seen on catwalks. The other “pre” collection goes into shops from November 45 of the spring collections. Pre-collections are a different beast from the main shows: the clothes are less 46 and the styles less daring. They are typically more wearable. No surprise, then, that today they make up 70-80 per cent of a fashion house’s annual sales, producing the majority of a house’s 47 .
Considering the financial might of these collections, one would be forgiven for wondering why we even 48 seasonal fashion shows. It seems a(n) 49 that most of the clothes we buy have nothing to do with what we see on the catwalk. So is the fashion show 50
Most fashion insiders insist there is no other choice. Financially, the show is still the best channel for buyers to 51 the heat of a fashion house before they make their orders. Editorially, a fashion week is still the best way in which media attention is 52 . And, creatively, the show is still held as being the most direct demonstration of a designer’s 53 .
Hence, the pre-collections exist for a reason. They are just like those great character actors who appear in dramas starring bigger household names. They are never out of work and are greatly good value but they are 54 recognized.
But things are changing. Next Saturday, a house will present its pre-collection show, in Paris, drawing to a close an unofficial “season” in which pre-collections are being staged. This year, such pre-collection shows are actually 55 . Where once they amounted to a few looks, they are now massive. The ugly duckling of the fashion industry finally has its moment.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
It’s eight o’clock on Christmas morning, and dad says he wants to listen to the news. My 11-year-old self is wondering why on Earth grown-ups would be interested in the news when there are important things to be done, such as handing out presents. And then, while I am only half-listening to the radio broadcast, something unusual happens: the boring newsreader begins talking about a Christmas message. Hadn’t we heard that report earlier
My older brother, Colin, figures out what’s happening. “Pete, Pete, it’s a tape recorder! We’ve got our tape recorder!”
It finally dawns on me: my dad recorded the news and is playing it back now.
I think it’s quite rare to experience real excitement over a present, but for me this was one of those rare moments. Colin and I had both been blind from birth. Now, in the late 1950s, exciting consumer goods were coming within reach of the not-so rich. At the special boarding school that Colin and I attended, a recorder of your own was the height of joy. However, Colin—better informed and more realistic about family finances than I was—had no real expectations of getting one. I realised, much later, that a tape recorder would have cost more than four times dad’s weekly wage.
The new toy, the size of a small suitcase, dominated the rest of the Christmas holidays. Once we had mastered the controls, we recorded anything and everything: each other, our parents, the milkman, the dog... and we very quickly learned how much fun we could have with it. For the first time, in the same way that a sighted child might react to seeing themselves in a mirror or a photograph, I got the sense of myself as a separate person who existed outside my head and was experienced by other people. It was both exciting and embarrassing.
I took my first steps down the path to my career as a broadcaster when I returned to school after the holidays. I was lucky to be in a class of imaginative and creative boys crazy for recorders, and it wasn’t long before we started to make our own radio programmes. I would wander round the school with my microphone, recording my thoughts in the style of the voices I heard on the radio.
Ten years later, I drew on the confidence gained from those early involvement in sound and walked into a radio station, in the hopes of selling myself as a broadcast journalist. Twenty-five years later, I presented my first report for BBC TV’s Six O’Clock News, a programme my dad had never missed. Although by then he’d been dead for more than a decade, I like to think he’d have realised that his inspiring Christmas present had changed my life.
56.Why did dad want to listen to the news on Christmas morning
A.He expected to give the boys a surprise.
B.He was postponing handing out his presents.
C.He had always enjoyed listening to the news.
D.He missed the Christmas news the day before.
57.By the first sentence of paragraph 4, the “experience real excitement over a present” means that _____.
A.he didn’t know before what a recorder was
B.he got the tape recorder he had been dying for
C.the recorder was the first present he got from dad
D.the recorder was an exceptionally meaningful gift
58.What did the recorder enable the boys to do when they started to use it
A.Make their own radio programmes.
B.Discover more about themselves.
C.Pursue a career in broadcasting.
D.Hear each other more clearly.
59.According to the passage, how did the tape recorder change the author’s life
A.It boosted the author’s confidence in communicating with people.
B.It helped the author develop a closer relationship with his family.
C.It made the author more interested in listening to news reports.
D.It sparked the author’s passion for sound and broadcasting.

My son, Ben, died when he was 23. The year after his death, I hiked 48 of the state’s tallest mountains in his memory. Every step, path and peak has been a way to restore.
About a month after his death, my husband and I hiked Carter Dome and Mount Hight, sorrow weighing heavy in our hearts and legs. Standing on the peak, I looked out across the mountains my son loved. For a moment, the heavy blow brought about by Ben’s death faded into the timeless expanse, and I could breathe.
The next weekend found us on Mount Moosilauke. Then Mount Cannon, Mount Flume, Mount Liberty and so on. It was a series of firsts, of struggles and overcoming them — climbing at night, climbing slides and rocks, camping alone, finding paths and planning routes.
Six days before the anniversary of Ben’s death, I hiked my 48th and final peak: Mount Carrigain. As I stood on the observation platform at the peak, I found the essential truth I had been grasping to express for months: The only place that feels vast enough to hold sorrow this deep and wide is the top of a mountain, looking out into forever.
These days, I hike not to hide, but to seek. I find Ben, but I also find myself: someone broken, now braver and more capable. The forced isolation of sorrow becomes the welcome loneliness of the path; the peace of nature replaces the pain of loss. Hiking is both exhausting and exciting, and it teaches us that sorrow and joy can coexist.
But there’s another, possibly more important truth: A hike is not the only way to find the peace of the natural world; a simple walk along a park path can have a similar effect. The internal journey of sorrow mixes with our steps, and we find comfort along the way.
63.How did the writer feel after climbing Carter Dome and Mount Hight
A.Doubtful. B.Relieved. C.Sad. D.Terrified.
64.After hiking the 48 peaks, the writer learned that __________.
A.it was possible to live with both sorrow and joy
B.it was the isolation of sorrow that exhausted her
C.only by overcoming struggles could one survive
D.the peaks were proper places to remember someone
65.What does the writer imply in the last paragraph
A.Walking works best for those in sorrow. B.We can plan our internal journey as intended.
C.What counts is to make peace with ourselves. D.People tend to hike in parks to seek comfort.
66.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.The Heavy Steps That Led Me To Peaks B.The Mountains That Held My Sorrow
C.The Journeys That Frustrated Me D.The First Struggles That Empowered Me
Section C (每题2分,共8分)

Hanwengong Shrine
Now we come to Hanwengong Shrine, which is beside Hangjiang river and west of Bijia mountain. 67 In the square in front of the hall, an ancient book-shaped stone is carved with two famous sayings of Han Yu on it, meaning hard work is the precondition for success, and deep thought is the guarantee of success.
In the year of A.D.819, for some political reason, Han Yu was exiled (流放) to Chaozhou, a backland at that time. But he was not depressed by this, and he helped local people to develop education, agriculture, irrigation and release slaves. 68
The shrine was built against the mountain and divided into two parts, the front part and the back part. Now we play a small game: count the stone steps, and later I’ll tell you a secret. How many steps are there Yes, 51 steps! Why 69 The first time Han Yu came to Chaozhou, he was impressed by the beautiful scenery and hospitality of local people. You see that old tree People say the more flowers in the tree, the more well-educated students are. But in Qing Dynasty, this magic tree, planted by Han Yu himself, died, so people planted this tree instead.
70 Here is one: when Han Yu was living in Chaozhou, there was a very fierce and cruel crocodile in the Hanjiang river, which was a big social harm. One day, Han Yu drafted a statement against the crocodile and made it public by the river. Incredibly, from the next day on, the crocodile was gone. Later, the statue, made of a portrait of Han Yu, was built and his words were left on the monument to mark his achievements.
A.When Han Yu came to Chaozhou, he was 51 years old.
B.Han Yu was a Confucian figure, and there are many stories about him in Chaozhou.
C.Although Han Yu’s ideas had no obvious practical effect at the time, they had a great impact on society decades later.
D.Built in the Song dynasty, the shrine is the oldest and best preserved monument to Han Yu, one of the greatest literary men in the Tang dynasty.
E.To memorize what he had contributed to the development of Chaozhou, people constructed this shrine and named him Hanwengong respectfully.

The Evolution of Robotics: A Journey from Imagination to Reality
The development of robots represents a fascinating journey from mere imagination to practical reality. Over the years, advancements in technology and engineering have pushed the evolution of robots, transforming them from simple mechanical devices to complicated machines capable of copying human behavior and performing complex tasks.
The history of robotics dates back centuries, with early concepts of mechanical beings found in ancient stories and legends. However, it was not until the 20th century that significant progress was made in the field of robotics. The appearance of industrial robots in the mid-20th century revolutionized manufacturing processes, leading to increased efficiency and productivity in factories around the world.
One of the most significant milestones in the development of robots was the invention of the programmable robot arm by George Devol and Joseph Engelberger in the 1950s. This innovation paved the way for the widespread adoption of robots in industrial settings, where they could perform repetitive tasks with correctness and accuracy.
Another milestone was the introduction of the first autonomous mobile robot, Shakey, developed by researchers at Stanford Research Institute in the 1960s. Shakey demonstrated the potential of robots to navigate and interact with their environment autonomously, laying the foundation for future advancements in robotics.
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of robotics. AI-powered robots are capable of learning from their experiences, making decisions, and adapting to new situations. This has enabled the creation of social robots, such as Pepper and Sophia, which can interact with humans in meaningful ways.
In recent years, there have been significant advancements in robotics, particularly in areas such as medical robotics, autonomous vehicles, and humanoid robots. Medical robots, for example, are being used for minimally invasive surgeries, precision medication delivery, and patient care. Autonomous vehicles are revolutionizing transportation, with companies like Tesla and Waymo developing self-driving cars. Meanwhile, humanoid robots like Boston Dynamics’ Atlas are pushing the boundaries of what robots can achieve, with capabilities such as dynamic movement and dexterity.

Section B (每题2分,共22分)

F.There are so many tourists that, to relieve the pressure on the monuments, the scenic spot requires that a maximum of 500 people visit at a time.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
71.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Dear Organizing Committee,
I am Li Qing, a Grade 12 student from Purun High School. I am writing to express my keen interest in participating in the upcoming “Chinese Workshop” event.
This cultural exchange holds profound significance as it offers a platform for our British counterparts to intimately experience the richness of Chinese culture. Through this workshop, we can bridge cultural divides and foster mutual understanding. Given my passion for Chinese calligraphy, I am eager to share this ancient art with our guests. Calligraphy is not just about writing; it’s a reflection of one’s spirit and character. Teaching this skill will not only impart knowledge but also promote cultural appreciation.
I believe that my enthusiasm and proficiency in calligraphy will contribute to the success of this workshop. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Li Qing
