For years, I rejected this part of myself, until I realized what I was missing.
I used to be proud of my southern origin. My own voice reflected my family’s past and present, all southern. While growing up, I began to realize outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and uneducated, ignorant and narrow-minded. In that awkward stage between teenager and adult, my accent was a symbol of everything I hated about my life in the rural South.
The process of getting rid of my accent began in high school with Gilmore Girls. After each episode, I’d stand before a mirror, practicing the characters’ lines in an effort to speak like a “normal” white upper-middle-class girl. Eventually, I was successful at breaking down my tongue and rebuilding it. Every time I was asked where I was from, I would say “near Memphis” or make an ambiguous statement about my country background.
Now I’m living in a big city with a respectable job downtown. Every step I walk from the train station to the office seems victorious. However, I’ve been pretending and I’m fed up with it. Occasionally my old self escapes from my lips when encouraged by an extra glass of whiskey, but I unconsciously go back to the safety of the unaccented minutes later, making me feel as if I’m a fraud — a girl who forgets where she comes from. Then gradually I’ve become kind of homesick that leads me to put on the old Highwomen record and dance around, singing with all the accent s I’ve got left.
My grandmother used to tell me, “Girl, don’t you forget where you come from ” Memories are fading by time but this one has remained impressed on my mind. So, I decide to move back. I’m still searching for what it means to be southern, but now I’m doing it with all the “y’alls”, and “ain’ts” I’ve kept back for so long.
24.Why did the author decide to get rid of her southern accent
A.Because she hated the southern rural life. B.Because it reflected her shameful past.
C.Because it made her laughed at by others. D.Because she was misled by prejudice.
25.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.The author learnt the language well. B.The author managed to rebuild her accent.
C.The author made a white upper class girl. D.The author finally succeeded in big cities.
26.What contributed most to the author’s return to her southern accent
A.Her grandmother’s words. B.Her homesickness.
C.Her boredom of pretending. D.Her over-drinking.
27.What message does the passage want to convey
A.Everyone has his dark secret. B.God helps those who help themselves.
C.There’s always a silver lining in the cloud. D.You should never compromise who you are.

It’s no secret that non-alcoholic beer tastes much worse than regular beer, but scientists in Denmark now claim to have developed a way of making it taste just as satisfying.
What non-alcoholic beer lacks is the flavor from hops (啤酒花). When you remove the alcohol from the beer, for example by heating it up, you also kill the flavor that comes from hops. Other methods for making alcohol-free beer also lead to poor flavor because alcohol is needed for hops to pass their unique flavor to the beer.
“After years of research, we have found a way to produce monoterpenoids (单萜), which provide the flavor, and then add them to the beer at the end of the process of making beer to give back its lost flavor. No one has been able to do this before, so it’s a game changer for non-alcoholic beer,” the Danish professor added.
This method of artificially recreating the flavor of hops using monoterpenoids is currently being tested in factories producing across Denmark, and the plan is to have a plan ready for the country’s entire beer industry by the end of October.
Although non-alcoholic beer has been growing in popularity at a very rapid pace, the new thing announced by Sotirios Kampranis and his team could have major meaning for the entire beer industry and our environment. Growing hops is a very wasteful process, with one kilogram of hops requiring no less than 2.7 tons of water.
“With our method, we skip hops and the water and the transportation. This means that one kilogram of hops can be produced with more than 10,000 times less water and more than 100 times less CO2,” Kampranis said. “When the monoterpenoids are released from yeast, we collect them and put them into the beer, giving back the taste of regular beer that so many of us know and love.” he added.
28.What plays a key role in making beer
A.Hops. B.Water. C.CO2. D.Patience.
29.What can we learn about the new non-alcoholic beer
A.It is the best beer in the market. B.It has been produced in many countries.
C.It has the same taste with the traditional beer. D.It is very popular with the young in Denmark.
30.What does Kampranis think the new non-alcoholic beer
A.It is a process filled with waste. B.It is environmentally friendly.
C.It needs better transportation. D.It gets an unexpected response.
31.In which section can we read this text in a newspaper
A.Sports. B.Culture. C.Education. D.Technology.

Shawn Triplett knew there was a desperate need to help the children of Mayfield, Kentucky, after a deadly storm struck the town.
Mayfield was one of the towns hardest hit after a line of storms crossed the central US on Friday night and Saturday morning. Triplett- a Mayfield resident and a former soldier — was in Chicago that Friday night. Alarmed by the weather reports, his wife and two young children went to stay in a hotel of the nearby town, Paducah, without suffering the storms and ultimately out of the path of the tornadoes(龙卷风).
Able to return home the next morning, Triplett was shocked by how the town was destroyed and wanted to help however he could. He arrived at the volunteer center, where he was asked to guide a photo-journalist through streets filled with remains. That night, the two returned to shelters where they saw many suffered families including one woman comforting her son over their lost Christmas.
“It was very heartbreaking, too much for me to handle, ” he said. Therefore, he decided that more needed to be done for the children affected by the storm. Noticing that supplies available were essentials such as generators (发 电机) and bottled water, he turned to his friends on social media for donations so that he could go to Walmart and purchase toys and gifts for the kids. Around $2, 000 were raised, and the store gave Triplett a discount upon learning of his efforts. As word spread on websites, more donations poured in. He was able to return the following day and another $6,000 was spent on toys and board games, he said. Forty pairs of shoes were also picked up at a local Shoe Sensation. Triplett and other volunteers will wrap and distribute the toys for any child or family in need. He credits the kindness of everyone who tried to help and get families back on their feet right before the holidays.
32.Why were Triplett and his families safe from the disaster
A.They were rescued by soldiers. B.They didn’t come back to Mayfield.
C.They were helped by an aid agency. D.They happened to be travelling in Chicago.
33.What did Triplett see in the shelters
A.A volunteer cleaning the street. B.A boy crying for his lost families.
C.A photo-journalist taking pictures. D.A mother calming her child down.
34.What do Triplett’s donations mainly contain
A.First-aid kits. B.Emergency food. C.Essential supplies. D.Entertainment items.
35.Which of the following can best describe Triplett
A.Generous and hard-working. B.Brave and energetic.
C.Sympathetic and warm-hearted. D.Foresighted and determined.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
Home on the Way
People need homes: Children assume their parents’ place as home; boarders call school “home” on weekdays; married couples work together to build new homes; and travelers—have no place to call “home”, at least for a few nights. 36 Don’t they have the right to a home Of course they do.
Some regular travelers take their own belongings like bed sheets, pillowcases and family photos to make them feel like home no matter where they are; some stay for long periods in the same hotel and as a result become very familiar with the service and attendants; 37 Furthermore, driving a camping car during one’s travel and sleeping in the vehicle at night is just like home.
And how about keeping relationships while in transit 38 ; some send letters and postcards, or even photos;others may just call and say hi, just to let their friends know that they’re still alive and well. People find ways to keep in touch. Making friends on the way helps travelers feel more or less at home. 39
Nowadays, fewer people are working in their local towns, so how do they develop a sense of belonging Whenever we step out of our local boundaries, there is always another “home” waiting to be found. 40 , we can make the place we stay “home”.
A.Hostels provide a clean and safe place to stay while you are traveling the world.
B.others may simply put some flowers by the hotel window to make things more homely
C.Backpackers in youth hostels may become good friends, even closer than siblings(兄弟姐妹).
D.So how about people who have to travel for extended periods of time
E.No matter where you go to in the world, hotels are there, too.
F.Some keep contact with their friends via the Internet.
G.Wherever we are, with just a little bit of effort and imagination

I had stopped at the Swindon services (服务区) while on my way back to London. As I drove up the slip road, I spotted a man with a backpack and his thumb (拇指) out. I pulled over and lowered the window.
“Which way are you heading ” I asked. “I’m going back to London.”
“Ah, that would be grand,” came his immediate reply. He opened the door and lifted his backpack on to the back seat. “I’m Brendan,” he said with an easy smile and a rich Irish tongue. “I was getting a bit desperate. I've had my thumb out for a day and half. Nobody seems to stop these days.”
“I haven’t eaten in days,” said Brendan. “I’m trying to get home.”
I’ve always enjoyed picking up hitchhikers (搭便车的人). I used to be a motoring journalist and crossed the country in various test cars. Picking up a hiker always made me feel a little less guilty about all the miles I was doing.
As we headed cast along the motorway, Brendan told me how he came to be waiting for a lift on that particular evening, and also about the two recent family tragedies that had ruined him and pushed him out of his old life and on to the road.
Brendan told me that he was 52. He laughed a lot and enjoyed his off-grid (不入网的) lifestyle. Until last week, that is, when he’d been mugged (抢劫).
“Three young men in Birmingham took my other pack and it had all my money in it. I’ve been sleeping out since then. I haven’t eaten in days. I’m hoping to get some casual work in London, so I can then get myself home to Ireland.”
It must have been the concept of home that got me, and helping a man who'd clearly had a tough time seemed like the right thing to do.

The school’s yearly sci-tech festival was successfully held last week, aiming to encourage students’ active engagement with science and technology.
The festival, featuring “Innovation and technology, touching the future”, attracted lots of students to participate in a variety of activities such a8 robotics competitions, science exhibitions, and coding contests. But the highlight of this grand gathering was the three forums, the lecturers of which were all renowned scholars on emerging technologies, Augmented Reality, for example. So thrilled were those present that they made the most of this opportunity to interact with the experts, trying to gain a deeper insight on how technology is changing the world.
Overall, the festival received an enthusiastic response from inside and outside the campus. It served as a platform for young minds not only to showcase their creativity and ingenuity, but also to explore how they might reshape the future by means of science.

67.As we were approaching the Heathrow turn-off (希思罗机场岔道), I had an idea. “Why don’t I just drop you at the airport now ” I said. “I’ll buy you a ticket and you can fly home.” “That’s so kind of you,” he replied. Then, after a pause, “and please don’t worry. I’ll definitely wire you the money when I get home.” I pulled onto the airport avenue and soon dropped him off outside the terminal building. I went to a cash point, got out 10 shiny new 20 notes and handed them over. He took the money and thanked me again and again.
Before he left to buy his air ticket, he gave me a huge hug. He took my phone number and said he’d call as soon as he could to arrange the transfer. I bid farewell to him without any real idea whether I’d ever see the man or the money again. As I drove the final miles to my own house in London, I felt happier thinking about Brendan. He asked for help, for a lift to get home, and in good faith I gave them to him. Nothing is better than helping others. Giving is receiving.

A.They were rescued by soldiers. B.They didn’t come back to Mayfield.
C.They were helped by an aid agency. D.They happened to be travelling in Chicago.
33.What did Triplett see in the shelters
A.A volunteer cleaning the street. B.A boy crying for his lost families.
C.A photo-journalist taking pictures. D.A mother calming her child down.
34.What do Triplett’s donations mainly contain
A.First-aid kits. B.Emergency food. C.Essential supplies. D.Entertainment items.
35.Which of the following can best describe Triplett
