As the daughter of immigrants, Chanthaphone’s primary language at home was Lao. At 5, she learned to speak English. But she didn’t know how to read and write - let alone how to fit in at school or communicate with classmates. Mrs. Lewis, Chanthaphone’s second-grade teacher, changed everything. She taught her students that it was OK if they did not know English and it was all right for them to use words in their home language to explain how they were feeling or thinking. Chanthaphone got more and more confidence and wanted to do what her teacher did in the future.
Now, at 26, Chanthaphone is an English teacher at Fort Worth ISDs William Monnig Middle School. Like Mrs Lewis, Chanthaphone aims to help her non-English-speaking students to gain the confidence they need to fulfill their potential in life.
At the beginning of each school year, Chanthaphone recounts her story to her new classes She tells them she knows what it feels like not to want to participate in class or raise her hand. She reminds them that she once sat in their seat and felt different because of her upbringing. But she stresses that’s what makes each of them special.
Her students, though, are usually unconvinced. She has to take out photos of her graduating college and tell them about her parents and what her school was like. Then it finally clicks.
In the classroom, Chanthaphone allows students to communicate in whichever way they feel most comfortable. For some, it may be raising their hand and voicing their thoughts. For others, it may be writing their thoughts on a piece of paper and handing it to Chanthaphone.
However, Chanthaphone does encourage her students to go out of their comfort zone. She wants them to work with students they don’t know because teamwork and collaboration with unfamiliar people is important.
“I’ve always wanted to be the teacher who supported students and advocated for them in and outside of classroom,” Chanthaphone said. “When I get notes or see Facebook posts from parents talking about previous teachers, including me, I feel like my goal has been completed.”
4. What do you know about Mrs. Lewis
A. She is ambitious B. She is inspiring.
C. She is knowledgeable. D. She is demanding.
5. Why does Chanthaphone tell her schooling experience to her new students
A. To make a good beginning of her class. B. To make herself well known to her students.
C To encourage her students to be confident. D. To push the students to voice their thoughts.
6. What does Chanthaphone focus on in the classroom
A. Students’ strong curiosity. B. Students’ mental health.
C. Students’ unique talent. D. Students’ communicating ability.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. I was once like you B. You are the only one
C. No one can say no to you D. Everything can be possible

There is more to bettering health than exercise and eating more fruits and vegetables. Maintaining proper posture (体态) is vital for living a fuller life and avoiding negative health outcomes.
Understanding good posture starts with the realization that your back doesn’t have to be completely straight, no matter how many times you heard warnings to “sit up straight” in your youth. “Proper posture allows you to distribute (分布) your weight equally, which enables your body to function more effectively with less bone stress and overall decreased damage. It also means plenty or movement. When most people think of posture, they consider fixed positioning. But the best posture guidelines encourage movement whenever possible,” says Drew Schwartz, a preventive medicine specialist.
Maintaining proper posture provides a host of proven physical benefits, including better breathing Schwartz notes that inefficient breathing patterns are related to a slouched (驼背的) posture, because such a position forces the body to rely more on upper-chest breathing. By contrast, belly breathing is more efficient and promotes relaxation pathways within the body. Proper posture can also improve digestion, helping you potentially avoid issues related to heartburn and high blood sugar levels.
Along with such physical advantages, proper posture can also enhance your social life by improving human interactions and connections. “We’ve learned that a person with middle head-level posture is considered to be more cooperative than someone who has their head in an up-or-down position,” says Brook Martin, an associate professor. “Because of this and because posture plays such an important role in body language, good posture can improve communication skills and make you more appealing to others.”
To experience benefits related to proper posture, Martin recommends being aware of how you sit and stand, and practicing doing so correctly often enough that it feels natural. Schwartz stresses the importance of wearing proper footwear, emphasizing that supportive flat and low-heeled shoes can be especially beneficial. “No matter what techniques you follow. improving your posture is an achievable goal,” Martin said.
8. What does holding a proper posture mean
A. Maintaining a straight back. B. Putting weight on main bones.
C. Ensuring balanced weight distribution. D. Avoiding intense pressure on the back.
9. How can proper posture benefit our physical health
A. By giving us peace of mind. B. By adjusting our blood pressure.
C. By switching our breathing methods. D. By ridding us of stomach discomfort.
10 What might Martin consider people with good posture to be
A. Capable and ambitious leaders. B. Easy-going and patient partners.
C. Active and hardworking employees. D. Approachable and popular communicators.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The positives of having good posture. B. Some ways to develop good posture.
C. The central meaning of good posture. D. Some facts behind body language.
D
Air pollution is among the biggest threats against humans, which causes seven million early deaths a year. To fight this problem, four friends put their heads together and designed CityTree, which is a mobile structure that can capture as many pollutants as a forest made up of 275 trees. What makes the ‘tree’ special is that it’s not a regular tree at all; it is made up of moss cultures (苔藓培养物) that do a great job of absorption.
“Moss cultures have a much larger surface than any other plant,” Zhengliang Wu, co-founder of Green City Solutions, explained to CNN. “That means we can capture more pollutants.” The entire ‘tree’ sustains itself using solar panels that generate electricity so that it can collect rainwater itself. To monitor the health of the moss, the CityTree has sensors which measure temperature and water quality.
Now, about 20 CityTrees can be found in major cities like Oslo, and Paris. The team also has plans to introduce the CityTree to cities in lower-income countries, which may have worse air pollution.
However, Gary Fuller, an expert on air pollution, thinks that the concept of an urban air purifier might be too ambitious. “Even if you had a perfect air cleaner, getting the surrounding air in contact with it is really hard,” he said. Pollution made by cars, for example, spreads upwards a few kilometers into the air. “Efforts would be better put into stopping the pollution from forming in the first place,” he added.
In response, the CityTree inventors say that they are aware of this and choose the location of each CityTree carefully. They are also testing a system to create their own air flow that draws the pollution to the “tree”.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about concerning the CityTree
A. Its appearance. B. Its operating process.
C. How it works. D. How it gets powered.
13. What is Gary Fuller’s attitude to the CityTree
A. Doubtful. B. Intolerant. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
14. What will the CityTree inventors probably do
A. Develop a new type of air cleaner. B. Make improvements to the structure.
C. Redirect efforts to make greener cars. D. Expand their business in rich countries.
15. Which of the following is the best title for this text
A. Global Efforts in Planting Trees B. The Alarming Trend of Air Pollution
C. A Structure that Will Change the World D. The ‘Tree’ with the Green Benefits of a Forest

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Wherever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her desk mate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids' group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti(意大利面)”. Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn't really like it when the kids chanted“ Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What's the matter with it ” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking(啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped(捧起) the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body.
Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates.

“Hey, guys, that's enough!” Catherine's voice was firm and loud.

The image of the small, scared chicken in her arms overlapped with the image of Landy's face turning red with embarrassment every time the kids teased her.
