Unit 5 专题训练:选择型阅读理解
Emma always loved the big oak tree at the end of her street. Its thick trunk and wide branches provided shade in summer and turned golden in autumn. Birds built their nests among its branches while squirrels ran up and down its rough bark. To Emma, this tree wasn’t just part of the community—it was like an old friend who watched generations of children grow up.
One afternoon, Emma saw bright yellow spray (喷漆) paint on the tree’s trunk. She realized what this meant—the tree was going to be cut down. When she asked her mother about it, she learned the tree was going to be removed (移开) to build more parking space for a shopping center.
Determined to save the tree, Emma called on her classmates to take action. They studied how trees help clean the air and provide homes for animals. They created colorful posters with messages like “Trees clean our air! ” and “Save our oak—save our future!” After school, the group stood near the tree, handing out flyers and explaining to neighbors why the tree should be saved.
Their efforts caught the attention of a local newspaper reporter. He wrote a report about it. Soon, over a hundred people wanted to help. At the next town meeting, Emma spoke to front of many adults about the importance of the tree.

Rainforests cover six percent of the Earth’s surface. There are rainforests in many parts of the world, such as Africa and Southeast Asia. But the biggest rainforest is in South America. There aren’t any rainforests in Europe or North America.
About 75 percent of animals live in rainforests. There are many beautiful birds, insects and so on. Many of them live in the trees, over 30 metres from the ground. There are also thousands of different plants. Lots of them are tall trees! It is always hot in the rainforests and the ground is always wet. It is also very dark there.

Unfortunately, in many places, the rainforests are in danger. For example, many years ago there was a large rain forest in Java (爪哇岛), but now there is nothing. Going green makes a big difference in our life. I’m Jessica Wong. Today I’ll tell you what my family does every day to save the Earth. It’s reported that a common family produces more than one ton of rubbish a year. Some of this waste takes hundreds of years to decay. Also, it costs much money to buy new things to take the place of the things we throw away.
In order to protect the environment and save money, my family has recycled everything. On the one hand, we collect used things every day, such as paper, bottles and boxes, and put them into different bins. Then they are sent to a recycling center. Finally, they are treated and can be used again. Recycling will help reduce a lot of waste. On the other hand, we use old clothes to make different kinds of bags. I especially like to use old jeans to make bags. These cute and useful bags are popular with young people. As a result, I open a small shop and set up a website to sell them online.
What’s more, my parents and my brother often go to work by bike. If it rains, they’ll take the bus. We’re also going to grow our own vegetables, raise cows, keep hens and ducks. Soon, we’ll be able to have eggs and milk for meals.

In December 2022, people in Shenzhen found that water ran more slowly from their taps. The government said the city was facing its most serious water shortage ever.
Some other cities in the southern part of China, like Chengdu and Guangzhou, are also becoming “thirsty”. The Paper pared (相比) with northern areas, southern areas have more rain and are close to more rivers and lakes. So why are they still short on water
In big cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou, populations are growing fast. As a result, people and factories need more and more water. Each person in Shenzhen has less than 200 cubic meters of water each year. It’s l/12 of the country’s average. According to the United Nations, it is an “absolute water shortage” (极度缺水) when the number is below 500 cubic meters.
Climate change is making the water problem worse. For example, most cities in Guangdong depend on the Dongjiang River as their main source (来源) of water. In 2022, the river was reported to be drying up. Because of climate change, there’s also less snow in the mountains of Tibet. The snow has long been the source of water for many areas in China. Those mountains might provide less water in the future.
There are other reasons for water shortages. For example, water pollution makes it harder to get clean drinking water. Factories and farms don’t use water efficiently (有效地). Some cities have enough rainfall, but don’t have big lakes or reservoirs (水库) to store water. The water just goes into the sea.

The area of Yinchuan Wetland Park was once a place that people didn’t like: waste water caused bad smells and almost no grass could grow on the land. Now, it not only becomes a popular place for people to take a walk, but also a good place for birds and other animals to live in.
Li Zhijun is a member of the bird protection organization (组织). He saw the great changes at the park. According to him, Yinchuan Wetland Park is now a famous place for bird photographers. More birds would like to stay here in winter.
Besides Yinchuan, many cities in China worked hard to protect wetlands. Wuhan in Hubei Province is known as a “city of a hundred lakes”. The city has five large wetland nature reserves (保护区). Tens of thousands of birds come to stay in winter.
Panjin in Liaoning Province is another surprising wetland city. In the past, the city had a lot of pollution because of oil production. But now in the wetlands by the sea, the seagrass turns red every autumn, creating beautiful “red beaches”.

Have you ever heard of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park It is our own “Amazon”. If you travel there, what can you enjoy
The park is home to Hainan gibbons (长臂猿). They look like monkeys, but have no tails. They eat fruits and leaves from over 130 kinds of plants. In the 1980s, there were fewer than 10 gibbons in the park. In 2022, there were 37 because people protected their home and planted trees.
The park is a “live museum” of plants. It is also the home to 149 kinds of national key protected plants. Cycas hainanensis (海南苏铁) is an example. It has big and feather-like leaves. It grows slowly, but can live as long as 200 years. It probably won’t grow flowers or fruit in North China. But in Hainan, cycas hainanensis over 10 years old can blossom (开花) and bear fruit almost every year.
Miao and Li people have lived in the park for generations (世代). Their houses look like upside-down boats. They are built above the ground to keep away from animals. People usually use mouths and some body language to talk with each other. When we have good news, we want to talk about it with our good friends and when something bad happens, we make it known to others soon. But do you know that some trees can also talk about news with each other Of course, no trees can move lips and say words just as people do. It may sound strange, but some trees really try to talk with each other in other ways.
Willows (柳树) are the best-known of these trees. When insects begin biting (叮) a willow, the tree sends out a special smell at once. This smell tells the other willows that harmful insects are coming near. All of them quickly make a chemical (化学物质) in their leaves. This chemical may kill the insects. The insects do not like it and they will fly away soon. In this way, the willows protect themselves from the insects.
