My dad, Greg Newman, had wanted to be a race car driver, but things didn’t work out for him. So I guess having a son who could become a race car driver was the next best thing. Don’t get me wrong — Dad didn’t push me into racing. In fact, when I was about 10 years old, my dad was afraid that driving a car wasn’t my dream. So he took the racing away from me. I wasn’t very happy with that decision. It wasn’t long before Dad realized that racing was what I loved.
At four, Dad bought me my first Quarter Midget (袖珍赛车) and that’s really where it started for us. Back then, Dad was my coach. He would stick out (伸出) his foot in the path of the race car, and then tell me to exactly hit his foot. By doing this again and again, Dad believed that I would be faster and sharper on the race track.
Dad worked really long hours at his car repair business to make money so that I could race each weekend. I can remember that every night before he turned off the lights in the garage, Dad would tell me: “Don’t forget to kiss your race car good night.” He was trying to teach me that if I show respect, it’s returned. He wanted me to show thankfulness and respect for my race car and for all the hard work that we and many others had put into the dream.
My dad, my mom and my sister gave up a lot of things to help me race. For us, there was no better moment than winning the 50th running of the Daytona 500 in 2018. That evening in February 2018, I knew I had gotten a good push. I could hear the excitement. My father couldn’t speak a word, and when he got to Victory Lane (车道), he nearly knocked me over and gave me such a big hug.
24.Why did Greg Newman stop his son to race when his son was 10 years old
A.Because he thought racing was dangerous.
B.Because he worried that his son didn’t like racing.
C.Because he didn’t want his son to fail like he did.
D.Because he didn’t have that money.
25.Why did Greg Newman let his son hit his foot
A.To improve his son’s skill. B.To help his son to be braver.
C.To have fun with his son. D.To make his son more careful.
26.Greg Newman asked his son to kiss his race car good night to ________.
A.get help from his family
B.treat the race car as his son
C.feel thankful that he could follow his dream
D.develop a close relationship with his race car
27.In the 50th running of the Daytona 500, Greg Newman couldn’t say anything because he was ________.
A.stressed B.surprised C.sad D.excited

Standing on the ruins after the fire where his house had been, Peter Ruprecht admitted that he was not sure how or when to rebuild. He was still shocked by what Australia’s increasingly changeable climate had already delivered: first a drought, then a destructive bush fire, then a foot of rain from a storm.
“It’s unstoppable,” said Mr. Ruprecht, a former dairy farmer. “We speak about the warmth of Mother Nature, but nature can also be vicious and wild and frightening.”
Australia’s hellish(地狱的)fire season has eased(缓和),but its people are facing more than a single disaster. With floods destroying homes not far from where fires recently spread, they are facing a cycle of what scientists call “compound extremes”: one climate disaster strengthening the next.
Warmer temperatures do more than just dry out the land. They also heat up the atmosphere, which means clouds hold more moisture(水汽)for longer periods of time. So droughts get worse, giving way to fires, then to heavy rains that the land is too dry to absorb.
Many Australians in disaster zones complain that their government, after ignoring climate change for years, has not yet to draw up recovery plans that are clear and that take future threats into account.
At the same time, the economic costs of a changing climate are rising quickly. Philip Lowe, the governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, warned recently that Australia was already paying a price, and that it would only go up.
28.Why is Peter Ruprecht’story mentioned in Paragraph 1
A.To lead to readers’ pity.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To stress the problem.
D.To call on readers to help.
29.What does the underlined word “vicious” mean in Paragraph 2
A.Graceful. B.Advanced. C.Responsible. D.Cruel.
30.What is the main reason for “compound extremes” in Australia
A.No government action.
B.Warmer temperature.
C.The lack of money.
D.No recovery plans.
31.Where is the text probably from
A.A guidebook. B.A travel magazine.
C.A news report. D.A book review.
D
Working out for 30 minutes every day “might not be enough” to fight against the health problems created by long time sitting, according to a sweeping new study.
The new study, unlike the past ones that examined sitting and formal exercise separately, paying little attention to light activities, involved 3702 people to find out how those all affected people’s health indices(指数).
With the data collected, researchers characterized people by how they moved. The first group dutifully exercised for a half-hour and then sat, almost nonstop, for more than 10hours a day. Another group similarly worked out for 30 minutes and sat for long hours. But, in between, they rose often and took walks around, spending time in light activities like fetching another cup of coffee. The third group sat, without any stop, for up to 10 hours, but also collected an hour of exercise most days. The final group, which the researchers named “the movers,” exercised about an hour most days, while also moving lightly for about two hours more.
When the researchers cross-checked these groups against people’s current health data, the first group had the worst indices. Different from the first group, the other groups were all better off and to about the same extent, with relatively improved blood sugar control and cholesterol(胆固醇) levels and about 8 percent less body fat than the first group.
“A single 30-minute, daily workout ‘might not be enough’ to reduce the bad effects of long time sitting,” said Vahid Farrahi, the lead author of the new study. “In addition to a brisk(轻快的) workout, we need to move lightly and often, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls or just not remaining still.”
32.What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.The finding of a new study.
B.Health problems caused by long sitting.
C.The time of working out every day.
D.Suggestions on how to work out.
33.What do we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4
A.The first group spent one hour on light activities after long sitting.
B.The second group got similar improved health indices as the movers.
C.The third group collected an hour’s exercise during 10 hours’ sitting.
D.The movers got up every 30 minutes for formal exercise for four hours.
34.What light activity is suggested to take in the last paragraph
A.Reading while sitting. B.Swimming in the pool.
C.Working out in the gym. D.Walking in the gym hall.
35.What can we infer from Vahid’s words
A.It’s better to exercise more often than half an hour every day.
B.Moving lightly and often is more useful than we have thought.
C.Working out harder and longer is better than just moving lightly.
D.A 30-minute workout has little help for long time sitting problems.
Playing sports is a lot of fun, but getting hurt is not. 36
Wear protective equipment.
The equipment you wear depends on the sport you play. Helmets (头盔) are the most common protective equipment. They protect your head while you’re playing football, baseball, softball, biking, skateboarding, and so on.
Warm up.
37 Doing some stretching (伸展) can get you prepared to hit the field. By warming up, you get yourself ready to play. Warming up your muscles and practicing a sport help keep you safe, too.
Know the rules of the games.
Traffic lights help prevent crashes between the many cars that drive on the roads together. This works because drivers know the rules and follow them. 38 When players know the rules of the game, fewer injuries happen. For example, you know that in soccer you can’t come from behind, crash into a player’s legs, and steal the ball.
39
Some rules don’t have anything to do with scoring points. Some rules are just about protecting other people. For example, a diver would make sure that the pool was clear before diving in. Otherwise, he or she might land on someone else.
40
This is a really important one. If you love sports, you may get right back in the game, even after an injury. But playing when you’re hurt is a bad idea. It can lead to an even worse injury.
A.You can take the following steps to prevent injuries .
B.It’s just like sports.
C.Don’t play when you’re injured.
D.Don’t do too much exercise.
E.You and the other players know what to expect from each other.
F.It’s not a good idea to just go to the field and start playing.
G.Take care of others.

New Year was just around the corner. I was second grade then, 7 years old. One day, on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to spread kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become “Neighborhood Angels (天使)”.
Several days later, my mother said, “Get ready, and we will go.” “Where are we going ” I asked my mother. “I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present.”, she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me 20 to pay for the present. Then she said, “I’ll see you outside in the car.” She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood. I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a warm jacket.
I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, “Is this for someone ”, as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real “Neighborhood Angel”.

On the contrary, the other groups were all better off and to about the same extent, with relatively improved blood sugar control and cholesterol(胆固醇) levels and about 8 percent less body fat than the first group.(当研究人员将这些群体与人们目前的健康数据进行交叉检查时,第一组的指数最差。
根据第三段“spending time in light activities like fetching another cup of coffee(花时间做一些轻松的活动,比如再拿一杯咖啡)”和第五段“we need to move lightly and often, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls(我们需要经常轻动,打扫卫生,爬楼梯,在大厅里散步)”可知,作者建议做一些轻松的活动,比如拿咖啡,打扫卫生,爬楼梯,散步,选项D walking in the gym hall(在体育场里散步)属于轻松的运动,故选D。
根据最后一段“A single 30-minute, daily workout ‘might not be enough’ to reduce the downsides of long time sitting(每天一次30分钟的锻炼“可能不足以”减少长时间坐着的负面影响)以及“In addition to a brisk workout, we need to move lightly and often, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls or just not remaining still.”(除了轻快的锻炼,我们还需要经常轻动,打扫卫生,爬楼梯,在大厅里散步,或者只是不要静止不动)”可知,作者认为每天只运动30分钟不足以降低久坐的负面影响,因此建议人们经常性轻微运动,由此推断经常性轻微运动是对人体是有好处的。

36.空前“Playing sports is a lot of fun, but getting hurt is not. (做运动很有趣,但受伤却不是)”,以及下文的各个小标题可知,文章介绍了一些预防在运动中受伤的措施。A项“You can take the following steps to prevent injuries. (您可以采取以下步骤来防止受伤。)”起到承上启下的作用。故选A项。
37.根据本段小标题“Warm up(热身)”,下文“Doing some stretching (伸展) can get you prepared to hit the field. By warming up, you get yourself ready to play. Warming up your muscles and practicing a sport help keep you safe, too. (做一些伸展运动可以让你做好上场的准备。通过热身,你可以为比赛做好准备。热身你的肌肉和练习一项运动也有助于保证你的安全。)”陈述了做一些热身运动的三个好处,F项“It’s not a good idea to just go to the field and start playing. (就这么走到球场上开始运动不是个好主意。)”可知,下文起到解释作用,一到球场就运动不好,上场前有必要先热身运动,the field为复现词,故选F项。
38.根据空前“Traffic lights help prevent crashes between the many cars that drive on the roads together. This works because drivers know the rules and follow them. (交通灯有助于防止在道路上一起行驶的许多汽车之间发生碰撞。这是有效的,因为司机知道并遵守规则。)”,此处以司机和交通规则为例介绍了规则的重要性,下文“When players know the rules of the games, fewer injuries will happen. (当运动员知道比赛的规则时,就会少受伤。)”介绍比赛规则的重要性,B项“It’s just like(就像……一样) sports. (它就像运动一样)”可知,It指代上文的司机与交通规则的关系,由此可知该空起到承上启下的作用。故选B项。
39.此处考查小标题。根据下文“Some rules don’t have anything to do with scoring points. Some rules are just about protecting other people. For example, a diver would make sure that the pool was clear before diving in. Otherwise, he or she might land on someone else. (有些规则与得分无关。有些规则只是为了保护其他人。例如,一名潜水员在潜水之前,要确保水池清澈。否则,他或她可能会落到别人身上。)”可知,本段讲述要留意他人,G项“Take care of others. (留意他人)”切题。故选G项。
40.此处考查小标题。根据下文“This is a really important one. If you love sports, you may get right back in the game, even after an injury. But playing when you’re hurt is a bad idea. It can lead to an even worse injury. (这一点非常重要。如果你热爱运动,即使受伤了,你也可以马上回到运动中。但在受伤的时候打球可不是个好主意。它可能会导致更严重的伤害。)”可知,这一段主要讲了受伤时不要运动,C项“Don’t play when you’re injured. (受伤的时候不要运动。)”,与下文语意一致,故选C项。
【答案与解析】
41. D考查名词辨析。名词party政党;city城市;village村子;race种族;根据最后一段第一句中出现的without prejudice“没有种族歧视”和下文的regardless of race or religion“不管种族和宗教”,可推知本空选择D项。

故A正确。

Dear Mike,
I’m very pleased to hear from you. Knowing that you are having trouble learning Chinese, I’m more than glad to offer you some suggestions on how to improve it.
To begin with, it would be a good idea if you could spend more time practising listening to and speaking Chinese in and after class. As the famous saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” What’s more, you’d better read some books and watch a couple of films every week to learn how Chinese people express themselves. Besides, as far as I am concerned, having some Chinese characters dictation competitions with your classmates will be of great help to you.
I hope you will find my advice useful and I am sure you will make great progress in Chinese.
Yours ,
Li Hua
Possible version 1:
That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper. She wrote “To Ralph, From a person who cares about you” on it, after which she drove me over to Ralph’s house in the neighborhood. My mother parked down the street. I took a deep breath and dashed to his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I threw the New Year’s present down on his steps, pressed his door bell and then hid in the car.
My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph’s front door to open and finally it opened. Out came Ralph. Seeing the jacket, he looked astonished and then called his mother to come out. After hearing them say “Thanks” loudly, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that time I decided to be a good person spreading kindness forever. It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no kindness in his heart will never find kindness in someone else.
Possible version 2:
That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper. In the package, my mother included a New Year’s card, on which she wrote “Happy New Year to Ralph, From someone who cares about you”. Then we got dressed and headed for his house in the car. On the way, she asked how the idea occurred to me and I told her about Ralph. She was actually amazed at my idea. Soon, we stopped at Ralph’s house and knocked on the door.
My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph’s front door to open and finally it opened. Ralph was surprised to see us at the door. My mother explained, “We are ‘Neighborhood Angels’, and we are here to give out New Year’s presents.” Meanwhile, I handed the jacket to him and wished him a Happy New Year. His face lit up and he thanked us over and over again. Seeing the big smile on his face, I made up my mind to be a New Year Angel in the years ahead. As you know, angels are actually in everyone’s heart.

Text 10
An 89 year old man from the state of Rhode Island has reached a goal he spent nearly a lifetime thinking about.
As a young man in Vienna, Austria, Manfred Steiner followed his mother's advice and entered the University of Vienna in 1951, where he earned a medical degree four years later. Then he moved to the United States. At the University of North Carolina, Steiner established a research program and directed it until he retired from medicine in 2000.
Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics. At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes in Brown University. By 2007, he had earned enough credits to join the doctoral program. One of his Physics professors said, “Steiner was serious about the subject and worked hard. What is really true about him is that he always sticks to his dream.”
Steiner now hopes to assist the professors in Brown with their research.
After the university published the story about Steiner on its website, people across the U.S. contacted him for advice on how to go after their dreams in life. His advice is: Do what you love to do!
