Wang Guihong, a 23-year-old girl from a farming family in Hubei province, experienced a few “bumps” at the starting line. At age 3, she lost her right leg in a traffic accident, and later, during high school, suffered from serious hydronephrosis (肾盂积水).
Despite these challenges, Wang entered Wuhan University of Biotechnology in 2019 to study Business English. She lived her school life with walking sticks, competing for and winning the position of an assistant in her class, impressing others with her positive energy. “She never complains (抱怨) about her challenges or disability,” said a close friend.
The long run of walking sticks using led to scoliosis (脊柱侧凸), but hope came when a classmate got news about a prosthetic leg (假肢). Despite the high cost, her family managed to raise the funds. After a period of adaptation and many falls, Wang successfully got used to her prosthetic leg.
The university supported Wang by offering her a sunnier dorm and aiding her in applying for scholarships. Despite her condition, Wang devoted herself to volunteering and taking part in community service, adding up to over 400 hours of service. “I’ve received so much help, and I want to give back,” she said.
Wang was excellent, graduating with high scores and passing the postgraduate entrance exam, although she was first accepted to a junior college course, known as Zhuanke in Chinese. She chose to run after graduate studies in Marxism at Hubei Minzu University, “My experience of volunteering has shown me that this major can help me better serve society and realize my value in the future,” explained Wang. She believed it would help her serve society better. “With all help and company I have, I face the unknown journey ahead without fear,” Wang said, having overcome many difficulties in life.

New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. A team at University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation (突变) which took place 6,000—10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today.
“Originally, we all had brown eyes,” said Professor Hans Eiberg. “But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene (基因) in our body resulted in the creation of a switch, which could turn off the ability to produce brown eyes.” The OCA2 gene codes for the so-called P protein (蛋白质), which is involved in the production of melanin (黑色素). It gives colour to our hair, eyes and skin.
The switch does not, however, turn off the gene entirely, but rather limits its action to reducing the production of melanin in the eyeball—effectively turning brown eyes to blue. The effect of the switch on OCA2 is very specific therefore. If the OCA2 gene had been completely destroyed or turned off, human beings would be without melanin in their hair, eyes or skin colour.
Change in the colour of the eyes from brown to green can all be explained by the amount of melanin in the eyeball, but blue-eyed individuals only have a small degree of change in the amount of melanin in their eyes. “From this we can conclude that all blue-eyed individuals are linked to the same ancestor,” said Professor Eiberg. “They have all inherited (继承) the same switch at exactly the same spot in their DNA.” Brown-eyed individuals, by contrast, have considerable individual change in the area of their DNA that controls melanin production.
The mutation of brown eyes to blue represents neither a positive nor a negative mutation. It is one of several mutations such as hair colour, baldness, and beauty spots, which neither increases nor reduces a human’s chance of survival. As Professor Eiberg says, “it simply shows that nature is constantly affecting the human gene and trying out different changes as it does so.”
28.What is the finding of Professor Hans Eiberg’s team
A.The eye color can be changed by adjusting genes today.
B.The eye color can help discover where people’s ancestors were.
C.A genetic mutation leads to the change of people’s eye color.
D.Blue-eyed people have survived due to their special genes.
29.What can we learn about “the switch” from Paragraph 3
A.It can be limited by other genes. B.It helps produce less melanin.
C.It helps OCA2 function in our body. D.It produces melanin directly.
30.Why can we conclude all blue-eyed individuals are linked to the same ancestor
A.They have almost the same gene. B.They have more change in gene.
C.They have more melanin in their eyes. D.They have a small degree of change.
31.What does the last paragraph want to tell us
A.Nature affects our genes. B.Only the fittest can survive.
C.We are decided by our genes. D.Some genetic mutations are pointless.
With basic developments in the field of technology, some experts foresee serious risks to jobs and employability in the coming years due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). About 27% of jobs are at high risk of automation (自动化) during the artificial intelligence era.
Low and middle-skilled jobs are most at risk, including construction, farming, fishing, forestry and, to a lesser extent, production and transportation. High-skilled jobs, despite being more exposed to recent progress in AI, face the least risk of automation.
While the adoption of AI is still relatively low, rapid progress, falling technology costs and the increasing availability of workers with AI skills suggest that the world may be on the edge of an AI revolution (革命). So far there is little evidence of a negative employment impact on companies that adopt AI. Workers and employers say that AI can reduce boring and dangerous tasks, leading to greater employee engagement and physical safety.
However, a recent survey showed that three in five workers are worried about losing their job to AI within the next decade. Additionally, a similar number of workers worry that wages would decrease due to AI. More than half of workers are concerned about privacy and three in four say that AI has increased work pace.
In my opinion, for the better protection of the labour market and workers in the coming years, governments should encourage employers to provide more training, integrate (融入) AI skills into education and support diversity in the AI workforce. Besides, longer-term policy frameworks for the use of AI in the workplace should be considered and closer international cooperation should be seen to maximize the benefits while properly managing the risks.
32.Who may be most affected by automation
A.A farming worker. B.A tour guide. C.an architect. D.A university professor.
33.What’s the workers and employer’s attitude towards the adoption of AI in the workplace in paragraph 3
A.Worried. B.Supportive. C.Indifferent. D.Doubtful.
34.What do the figures in paragraph 4 imply
A.Harmed personal privacy. B.Decreased job satisfaction.
C.AI-related positions’ popularity. D.Workers’ concerns over AI.
35.What is the author’s advice in the last paragraph
A.Limiting AI’s application in the workplace. B.Promoting cooperation between AI companies.
C.Adopting policies to control AI’s impact. D.Reducing AI education in colleges.
Four Habits to Help You Succeed
Nobody would like to experience failure. We all want to succeed. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand. 36
·Know your values.
Finding your values is in line with creating motivation. 37 Pick a handful of things and write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.
·Pick a goal and focus on it.
Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of achievement, while adjusting well to your values. If you want to achieve your goal, focus is the key here. 38 If you perform many tasks at a time, you might never finish your projects because they will take far too long.
·Set a time for success.
Set a date for success. Know when you hope to realize your goal. 39 By setting a time limit, you are making the process realistic.
40
Failure can’t be avoided when you take risks. By its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early. Don’t fall into this trap! Use failure. Treat it as a good thing, and go on.
A.Make the right decision.
B.The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.
C.Here are some habits that can help you set goals and realize them.
D.Keep it realistic, while not giving yourself too much time.
E.Don’t give up because of failure.
F.Sit and reflect on what you value most.
G.Push yourself to be courageous, and take that next step.

Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in a desperate situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large and expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant selling me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me. She replied, still all smiles, “I’m sorry, sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remember my wife’s interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you’re in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn’t see me.
I waited in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if they will show kindness to me. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

【原文】
Good evening, and thank you all for coming. We are a new charity, established in spring with the specific aim of solving homelessness in our neighborhood. Our purpose is to make their lives better in every way we can. We will achieve this by providing those in need with food and shelter, especially now. Winter is about to come, and many of them will suffer in the cold weather.
We are financially supported by a group of citizens. Our first project is to set up a soup kitchen where homeless people can come for a hot meal. For the moment, we can only provide supper, but in the near future we want to provide hot lunches as well. We have been given a building and enough funds to buy food, and now we’re looking for volunteers to cook, serve and clean. Mrs. Jones, the next speaker, will explain to you exactly how you can become a volunteer.

34.推理判断题。根据第四段“However, a recent survey showed that three in five workers are worried about losing their job to AI within the next decade. Additionally, a similar number of workers worry that wages would decrease due to AI. More than half of workers are concerned about privacy and three in four say that AI has increased work pace.(然而,最近的一项调查显示,五分之三的工人担心在未来十年内因人工智能而失去工作。此外,类似数量的工人担心工资会因人工智能而下降。超过一半的员工担心隐私,四分之三的员工表示人工智能加快了工作节奏)”可推知,第 4 段中的数字表明了工人对人工智能的担忧。故选D。
35.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“In my opinion, for the better protection of the labour market and workers in the coming years, governments should encourage employers to provide more training, integrate (融入) AI skills into education and support diversity in the AI workforce. Besides, longer-term policy frameworks for the use of AI in the workplace should be considered and closer international cooperation should be seen to maximize the benefits while properly managing the risks.(我认为,为了在未来几年更好地保护劳动力市场和工人,政府应该鼓励雇主提供更多培训,将人工智能技能融入教育中,并支持人工智能劳动力的多样性。此外,应考虑在工作场所使用人工智能的长期政策框架,并应寻求更密切的国际合作,以在妥善管理风险的同时实现利益最大化)”可知,作者在最后一段中的建议是要采取政策控制人工智能的影响。故选C。

67.One possible version:
That was when I saw a young mother with her two kids. She was talking on the phone, and her voice told me she was a gentle and patient lady. The two kids were neatly dressed and waited quietly beside her. This must be a nice family, I thought to myself. Therefore, I approached to make a request. But as soon as I said, “Excuse me madam,” she grabbed both her kids and went away. Did I look like someone trying to hurt people I felt my heart sinking horribly.
Finally, I was about to give up when a man wearing a cheap T-shirt seemed to notice me. I didn’t know why but I just stopped him and made my request. I was expecting him to rush past but he immediately called the number of my driver and waited till my car came to be sure I was picked up, turned around before I could thank him adequately and was gone. Surprised by his kindness, I promised I would do likewise to strangers who sought my help.
