Even at 80, Mei Jingtian continues to watch over the Great Wall.
Living in a village near the Great Wall, Mei has a deep love for the wall.He still remembers he usually ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on this
impressive structure when he was a child. However, when he returned to the village
after working outside for years, he was surprised by the damage to the ancient wall. “Some villagers even took bricks from it to build their houses,” Mei said.
To help protect the wonder, Mei volunteered to walk along the wall each day to check its condition, encouraging other villagers to join him. “Of course, it might be dangerous to hike in the mountains by myself, so I always tap the grassy . ground along the way with a wooden stick, scaring wild animals away,” Mei said.
In 2006, as head of the village, Mei helped set up a local volunteer protection
group. Realizing the importance of heritage protection, more and more villagers
returned the bricks they had taken, and about 80 of them joined as volunteers. To
ensure that the volunteers could carry out their duties effectively, Mei arranged for
training programs on basic protection and safety measures. Together, they conducted daily check-ups to track the condition of the Great Wall and reported any damages.
Encouraged by her father, Mei's daughter followed him and officially became a Great Wall protector in 2019. “When I was a child, my father always told me his
stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall,” Mei’ s daughter said. “It is also my responsibility to protect the cultural heritage.”
The past ten years have seen Mei's preservation efforts to the Great Wall. “It is my biggest wish to see heritage well-preserved and open to visits, encouraging more people to join us in protecting the Great Wall,” Mei says.

Terns (燕鸥) chirping and wolves howling are among a pioneering composition that integrates
sounds from nature with traditional instruments. Bird songs and animal calls will interact with
orchestral(管弦乐的) music on an album by Stewart Copeland.
Wild Concerto, released on 18 April, is a“cooperation between nature and music”. A croaking frog, a black-footed albatross(信天翁), and a red deer will“perform” with Copeland, alongside 30musicians from the Kingdom Orchestra. Copeland said none of the natural recordings had been manipulated or
returned.“All the bird and animal sounds are exactly as they were, but I put them in positions so that
they add up to a melody and rhythm,” he said. “Their voices bring a super authenticity to the music.
They all have their own individual melodies but when you put an instrument in,everything is more
amazing.”
Wild Concerto is inspired by the arctic tern's migration from pole to pole, and creatures possibly
encountered along the way. Copeland said there was a conservationist theme to the work. “Many of
these species are endangered and their sounds could disappear in our lifetime. Through the Wild Concerto, their voices will be kept immortalized(永生的).”
For six decades, he has captured sounds of the natural world, from rain-forests to deserts —
recordings heard in natural history series such as Our Oceans and Blue Planet as well as about 150films. With a document of almost 100,000 recordings, he has been called“the David Attenborough of sound”. Copeland is a brilliant talent. He's combined natural sounds and music continuously. This is another
way for people to listen to nature.
He hopes the album will raise awareness of creatures that are so affected by noise pollution that
their sounds cannot be captured cleanly:“Two-thirds of the species in my library are now basically
extinct. Twenty-five or 30 years ago, when I wanted to record one hour of primitive sound, it took
about three or four hours to do that with minimal editing, compared to 2,000 recording hours today,
because there are so many man-made sounds in the environment...”

B. Mixing bird songs with animal calls completely.
C. Producing super realistic bird songs and animal calls.
D. Making successful changes to bird songs and animal calls.
29. What does the underlined word“manipulated” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Monitored. B. Analyzed. C. Matched. D. Edited.
30. What do we know about Copeland
A. He was optimistic and hopeful about the wildlife situation.
B. He was indifferent and helpless about the noise pollution.
C. He expressed his great concern about the endangered species.
D. He demonstrated enormous passion about the success of the concert.
31. What does the author think of Copeland's efforts
A. Time-consuming and fruitless. B. Notable and remarkable.

One of our biggest fears nowadays is that our kids might someday get lost in a“sea of
technology”rather than experiencing the natural world. TV and computer games are leading to a
serious disconnect between kids and the great outdoors.
Each of us has a place in nature where we go sometimes, even if it is torn down. We cannot
be the last generation to have that place. At this rate, kids who miss the sense of wonder outdoors will not grow up to be protectors of natural landscapes.“If the decrease in park use continues across NorthAmerica, who will defend parks against encroachment(蚕食) ” asks Richard Louv, author of LastChild in the Woods.
Without having a nature experience, kids can turn out just fine, but they are missing out a huge enrichment of their lives. That applies to everything from their physical health and mental health,
to stress levels, creativity and cognitive(认知的)skills.Experts predict modern kids will have poorer health than their parents —— and a lack of outside play is surely part of it; research suggests that kids do better academically in schools with a nature exposure. Even a small outdoor experience can create wonder in a child. The three-year-old turning over his first rock realizes he is not alone in the world.
Kids are not responsible. They are just over-protected and frightened. It is dangerous outdoors from time to time, but when repetitive stress from computers is replacing breaking an arm as a
childhood rite(仪式) during the children's growth, it can be more dangerous.
We should help regain for our kids some of the freedom and joy of exploring nature and
taking friendship in fields and woods that cement love, respect and need for landscape. As parents, we should devote some of our energies to taking our kids into nature. This could yet be our greatest cause.
32. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2
A. To show the great damage done to nature.
B. To recommend a popular book to the public.
C. To stress the necessity of kid's going outdoors.
D. To raise the awareness of environmental protection.
4
33. What may happen to children without a nature experience
A. They' ll surely become a failure.
B. They' ll keep a high sense of wonder.
C. They may suffer physically and mentally.
D. They can develop better social skills.
34. What does the author think of children's breaking an arm
A. It is not a bad thing in a sense.
B. It is caused by the careless parents.
C. It should be taken seriously.
D. It could be prevented from happening.
35. What should parents do according to the author
A. Ensure kids' freedom and joy.
B. Value outdoor activities of kids.
C. Bring kids science about nature.
D. Advocate kids making friends.

Forget privacy, young internet users want to be tracked
On every smartphone there sits a tracker's paradise(乐园) of location data ready to be shared.36 And this tech is marketed as convenient, not frightening.
What is an acceptable level of online surveillance(监视) I had assumed we all agreed that the ideal was none. 37 A quick enquiry on my friends found that those who were, like me, in their40s and older either had no idea they
could use their phone in this way or had relatively little interest in doing so. But friends a decade or so younger all seem
to be tracking one another at will. They don't find the idea of monitoring or being monitored in this way upsetting. They say it makes them feel safer.
38 It is just that they are realistic about the privacy that is available. They know that if you own a smartphone and don't want to disable useful things like maps, then your location is already being watched. If app creators, smartphone
makers and ad companies are already tracking your location, then why not share the information with people you know
If you want to start tracking the people you know, then there are some rules involved. It's fine to use tracking to check that a friend has got home safely at the end of a night out, for example, but not to surprise them on the street. And think carefully about whom you share data with. 39
Location tracking as a safety measure, particularly for elderly parents and children, is appealing.40 Once you grow comfortable sharing your location with your family and friends, perhaps one day you' ll be happy to share it with
your employer or even government agencies.
A. It is for family and close friends only, not new dates.
B. But the truth is how popular it is depends on your age.
C. Location sharing has been around for more than a decade.
D. The risk is that if you do it too often, it will be hard to turn around.
E. After all, no one will find it comfortable to be watched all the time.
F. This is not because they are blind to the importance of online privacy.
G. Location tracking is so precise that it can locate one person in a crowd.
