Frost (霜) is a layer (一层) of ice. It can freeze (冻结) over things like plants and windows. It only happens at certain (某些) times of the year.
During fall and spring the weather is changing from hot to cold or from cold to hot. It is perfect (完美的) for frost. During the day if it’s warm enough, the air can hold (保存) on to a bit of water vapor (蒸气). ①Water vapor is water in the air as an invisible (看不见的) gas. But if at night the air gets colder, the gas (气体) will turn into liquid (液体的;液体) water again. ②So sometimes in the morning we can see the grass is wet (湿的) even if it didn’t rain last night.
The water in the grass actually (实际上) comes from the air. There is a special (特殊的) name for water in the air turning into a liquid like this. It’s called condensation (凝结).
If it’s only a little cold, the water on the grass will stay the way. This makes the ground and plants a bit wet in the morning. But if the weather is just right—it’s warm during the day and can get very cold at night, the water on the grass will freeze into frost.

Try a “McChina” burger
China burgers offer people more options
品尝精致中式汉堡, 感受 “舌尖上的中国”
Have you eaten a “China burger” yet China burgers are becoming more popular (受欢迎的) lately. Some places go by names like Tastien and Ranxiong. They are like McDonald’s, KFC or Burger King, but more Chinese.
I wanted to try something special from Tastien. So a few days ago I got a Peking duck sandwich with sides (配菜) and a drink.
When I got my food, I loved the packaging (包装). The paper bag and boxes came in red, white and blue colors. They also had the words “Made in China” on them. The burger is pretty good. It has the Peking duck meat with some cucumber, lettuce and plum sauce (梅子酱). But it still has its problems. The roast duck did not have crispy skin (脆皮) like it does in the Peking duck restaurants.
Even so, I have to say that it’s an adventure on the tongue (“舌尖上的冒险”). It opens the door for me to try more different burgers.

Making friends at a new school
Joining a new school can be scary, but everyone is in the same boat! Some people might be lucky enough to go to a new school with old friends, but many teens are all starting a fresh, just like you. Here are some good ways that you can use in making friends:
★Believe (相信) yourself and go and talk to people who you would like to be friends with. I’m sure everyone will talk with you too. You have to try, so just introduce (介绍) yourself and make small talks and soon you’ll have yourself a new friend.
★Don’t worry about how you look to others as long as you are happy about yourself. In the end, everyone will be thinking about themselves, not about others. So don’t worry too much!
★Join lots of clubs that look interesting to you and you will find people with the same interests. This is always a good starting place for friendships. I have a love for music so it helped when I joined lots of music clubs, and then joined a Saturday music school—you find lots of people with the same hobbies, and this makes it easier to talk to them.
★ _________. Many of them will be just as afraid as you are, and will be thankful to have a talk with you. Don’t think about being popular with everyone. So, please talk to your classmates.
★Just be yourself and people will want to be friends with you for who you are, not who you try to be. If you just look open and friendly, you will be fine!

Bringing color to woodcuts
Showing beauty of Yunnan through reduction woodcut prints
如水彩画般绚丽的绝版木刻
Many traditional woodcut prints (版画) are black and white or simple in color, but reduction woodcut (绝版木刻) prints can show rich colors.
The reduction woodcut uses one piece of wood to make a colorful artwork. The artist cuts (刻) and prints (印刷) different layers (层) one by one on the wood. The reduction woodcut became an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in Pu’er, Yunnan, in 2009.
Master’s story
Leng Guangmian, 40, is a reduction woodcut artist. Leng started learning it in 2003. He said that making reduction woodcut prints is just like an adventure (奇遇). “Every time we cut on the wood and then print, we never know what it will be like in the end.”
Leng wants his artwork to show both great woodcutting skills (技巧) and the culture and life in Pu’er. “For my works, there are two themes (主题): Tea Horse Road (茶马古道), because Pu’er is one of the starting places of that road; and disappearing villages,” Leng said. “Many old villages in Pu’er need rebuilding, so I want to make people remember their beauty (记住它们的美) before they are gone.”

Two is better than one
Why do we have two nostrils
我们为什么需要两个鼻孔?
We have two nostrils (鼻孔), and we need both of them to live.
Scientists found out about something called the nasal cycle (鼻周期). When we breathe (呼吸), each of our nostrils takes turns to get congested (堵塞). As a result, in most cases, one of the two nostrils finds it hard to breathe. The congested nostril changes every few hours.
In the congested one, the air gets through slower. The slowly moving air gives more time for the nostril to pick up enough scent particles (气味颗粒). So, the congested nostril gives us a better sense of smell (嗅觉).
The reason why we need two nostrils doesn’t stop there. Earlier this month, a study showed that each nostril has its own sense of smell. Together, both of the nostrils help us breathe and smell better.
DID YOU KNOW
Apart from nostrils, our eyes and ears also make good teams. With our two eyes, we can see the world in 3D.We can see how far away things are because each eye sees a thing at a different angle (角度). Our brains (大脑) work on the two images (图像), and then we can see the length (长度), width (宽度), and height of a thing.
As for our ears, when we hear, the force of sound waves (声波的力度) into different ears is different. Our brain feels the difference and works on it. This helps us know where a sound is coming from.
Choose the answer:
41.What do we know about our nostrils from Paragraph 2
A.We need only one nostril to live.
B.They don’t easily get congested.
C.The nasal cycle is a big health problem.
D.They don’t usually let in as much air at the same time.
42.In the congested nostril, the air ________.
A.doesn’t move at all
B.moves more quickly
C.needs more time to get through
D.picks up a lot of scent particles
43.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.How the two nostrils work together.
B.How nostrils breathe in the air.
C.Why the air gets through the congested nostril slowly.
D.Why the congested nostril helps us smell better.
44.The writer used the study in Paragraph 4 to show that ________.
A.we need two nostrils
B.nostrils can help us breathe
C.many people study nostrils
D.nostrils can do many more things
45.根据首字母提示填空。
We have two nostrils and b are important. They take t to help us breathe. When a nostril gets congested (堵塞), the air gets through it s . As a result, it has more t to pick up enough scent particles (气味颗粒). This helps us smell better.
Becoming a student of Swift
Swift’s songs are studied in college
比利时大学开设“斯威夫特版”文学课
Taylor Swift is a well-known US singer. Now some students learn about her songs in classrooms!
Ghent University in Belgium is opening a new literature course (文学课程) to study Swift’s songs this fall, said CNN.
Elly McCausland is the teacher of this class. She wants this class to make people think critically (批判性地) about Swift as an artist (艺术家) and a writer. It also helps people know about the literature behind her songs.
So what is the difference between literature and pop culture (流行文化) McCausland told Modern Weekly that many people think pop culture is not literature. But in her eyes, there’s no rule to tell us the difference. That’s why she started the course. “People can talk more about what literature is,” said McCausland.
McCausland added that scientists can sit to find some ways to fight climate change (应对气候变化). “Why can’t we sit here to talk about Swift in literature, ” said she.

Having a giant diet
Elephants have a colorful plate for their dinner
为了健康,大象一点都不挑食!
If you eat the same thing every day, you will not be happy. Elephants think so too!
Recently, a team of US scientists (科学家) went to Kenya. They did a new study about elephants there. They looked at elephants’ poop (粪便) and tried to find the DNA of plants in it.
What did they find In one elephant’s poop, there are up to 137 different kinds of plants! Elephants have a really rich diet.
Their diet also changes with the weather. When it rains, the elephants eat more grass. When it’s dry, they eat more of other kinds of plants.
Elephants are big eaters. An adult elephant eats about 100kg of food and drinks 100 liters (升) of water every day, according to Britannica.
Big and smart
Elephants are very clever. Scientists find they sometimes do things just like us.
● They know different sounds. Some sounds are safe. They can tell safe sounds from other sounds. When they hear dangerous sounds, they run away.
● They live in families. The “mother” is the most important in an elephant family. Female elephants stay in the family forever. Male elephants leave between the ages of 7 and 12.
● They can be sad. If an elephant dies (死亡), others will stand beside it to show their sadness.
● They can remember (记住) places, such as rivers. They aren’t easily lost in forests.

Looking strong in the games
Youth power shines in the Chengdu FISU Games
青春力量闪耀成都大运会
This summer, many people watched the 31st FISU Summer World University Games. From July 28 to Aug 8, 6,500 student players from 113 countries and regions (地区) came together in Chengdu. The players were between 18 and 27 years old.
In the matches, they tried hard for medals (奖牌). Players got 269 gold medals and broke 22 records (打破22项纪录) for the Games this time.
It’s all thanks to the young players’ hard work and confidence (自信). One example is Chinese player Wu Yanni. Before each match, the 26-year-old liked to turn her head around and point her fingers to the sky. She did it to show she wants to become stronger.
But after matches, players were happy to learn about their differences. The players also got to visit pandas in Chengdu. On July 31, Italian player Mario Del Basso met pandas for the first time in real life. He even learned to say “come here” in the Sichuan way. “They are much [more lovely] than they are in videos,” said Basso.
They also loved the nice food. In Chengdu, many players fell in love with chili powder (辣椒面). After the players left the city, they bought some chili powder back to their home countries.
