In today’s world, applying to (申请) colleges, even jobs, asks questions about your volunteer experience. This is great! I know some people who are quick to talk about how they help others. Smiling big, they tell me about the number of volunteer hours. But sometimes I find out that they don’t even know the task (任务) of the group! Although this only happened twice, it really troubled me. So I start to think that maybe this isn’t the best way to think about helping others.
________ It should be more about making your community (社区) better, and learning what it means to be a good person in our world. You should think about helping others, not about how it will benefit you.
The best way to fix this is to change what colleges and jobs ask for. Instead of asking “how many hours have you helped”, they should ask “how have you made things better for others”. They should ask people to explain, and look for people who really care and try hard, instead of just seeing the hours they’ve spent.
We, the students, can also help fix this. Try to forget about the hours, because they’re not important. Choose groups you care about and learn about the people you’re helping. Don’t help because you have to but because it’s the right thing to do as a person. Next time you hear a friend talking about how many hours they’ve helped, tell them that numbers don’t change the world.
5. Which of the following can be put in “________”
A Why don’t you try volunteering
B. Helping others shouldn’t be only about numbers.
C. More and more people are helping the community.
D. Maybe you know why to help others.

A. Be interested in. B. Be good for. C. Be bad for. D. Be popular with.
7. Which is NOT a good way for the students to think about
A. Helping because you have to. B. Caring about and choosing a group.
C. Learning about the people in need. D. Thinking it’s the right thing to do.
8. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the number of volunteer hours
A. The writer loves it very much. B. The writer agrees with it strongly.
C. The writer is careful about it. D. The writer doesn’t think it is important.
Passage C

Ⅴ. 回答问题
根据短文内容回答短文后的问题,并将答案写在答题卡(纸)的相应位置。
Every day, it seems, a new gadget (设备) promises to help me run farther and faster, sleep better, or monitor (监控) my heart rate more effectively (有效地). These gadgets claim they’ll make me a “better me,” or so the story goes.
Some of them might actually help, but a few months ago, I decided to sell all my sports gadgets. I now record my running times with just a pen and a notepad. Soon after, I started training for a marathon the old-fashioned way—without a device on my wrist tracking my pace or heart rate. To my surprise, running without all that information turned out to be a real joy.
In the past, whenever my smartwatch told me I was running slower than I “should,” I’d force myself to speed up, even if it was clear that my body didn’t want to. But this time, I ran the way I wanted to.
On several occasions (场合), I was surprised to see real breakthroughs (突破) in my running times when I checked my notepad after workouts. If I had seen those numbers during the run, I might have slowed down. But since I didn’t know, I just kept running.
Another positive thing about getting rid of all my running gadgets is that it’s helping me concentrate (集中注意力) more on the running itself. Since I no longer feel like I need technology to run well, I can go out and run without worrying about battery life.
So, what’s the lesson here Well, we could very easily replace the example of running with writing, studying, or anything else. No matter what it is, the more we worry about improving, the more it hurts our performance.
Should you stop using technology to “improve” your performance Of course, that’s up to you. However, if I were asked that question, I’d certainly say that I’m better off without it.
41. When did the writer decide to sell all of the sports gadgets

Dear Li Hui,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling to get on well with your classmates and parents. It’s completely normal for teenagers to face such relationship-related challenges as you’re growing up.
When it comes to classmates, actively participate in class-based projects. For instance, if there’s a science-fair preparation, volunteer to join a team. Working together towards a goal helps build bonds. For parents, set aside a specific “chat time” daily, even just 10 minutes. Share your small joys, like a funny thing at school, and also listen to their workday stories.
I’m sure with these efforts, you’ll see positive changes. Keep your kind heart and open mind!
Yours,
Li Hua
