The Problem With Overly Helpful Friends
Tying knots looks easy. You just bend(使弯曲)the rope this way, twist(拧)it that way, pull, and you’re done. Yet there are dozens, if not hundreds, of different kinds of knots, each demanding a unique sequence (顺序) of bends, twists and pulls that you must memorize. For a novice(新手), memorizing them is challenging. (21)______ is why my mountaineering. instructor required each of us students to repeatedly practice the “figure-eight follow-through” and the “alpine butterfly.”
One student, who had already learned all the knots long before, could not resist telling me which way to bend, which way to twist, and which way to pull. If we had been climbing a mountain with dangerous cliffs(悬崖)below us, I probably would have welcomed his help. But here, learning was the goal:I was grateful when the teacher (22) ______ (silence) him. I needed to exercise my own memory, (23)______ it meant moving slowly.
Actually, even if we had been approaching the top of the mountain, it would have been better for me (24)______(tie) my own knots. When you understand everything that you do, you become more competition and enjoy activities more. This is obvious in sports like climbing, where mastering skills is part of the pleasure, but it holds truer almost every pursuit.
Herein lies the danger of generative AI. These tools are like the overly helpful friends who think they know everything Quiet often, we (25) ______ (tempt) to ask for AI’s help with everything we do. Lately, (26) ______ I talk with my friends about something I’m uncertain about, they say, “Ask ChatGPT” or “Ask DeepSeek.” However, a big problem with these tools is (27)______ they sometimes give wrong or incomplete information. (Presumably they will continue to improve, though. )
An even deeper peril(危险)is that habitually (28)______ (rely)on AI tools will take the Eage off your thinking A recent study by scientists from MI suggested that over-reliance on AI tools can lead (29) ______ intellectual (思维的) laziness. And that could have consequences. If you do not engage in your own research, it will be harder for you to distinguish truth from falsehood. If you do not synthesize(综合) information on your own, you will lose the ability to think independently. From tying knots to writing essays, (30)______ pays off to use your own head.
Section B
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
remaining B. differ C. physical D. continuous E. willing F. adding unchallenged H. appealing I. adapt J. claimed K. professional
Don’t Let Your Comfort Zone Become a Prison
Where do you go when you’ve reached the summit of a mountain The answer is simple:You find another mountain to climb.
Fan Zhendong, one of the world’s finest table tennis players, embodies(体现)this spirit. The 28-year-old from Guangzhou (31) ______ the gold medal in men’s singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, (32) ______ to his previous titles at the World Championships and the World Cup. After some disagreements with the International Table Tennis Federation, he contemplated(考虑接受)retirement. However, he eventually chose a different path. Instead of stepping away, Fan left his “comfort zone” in China and moved to Germany to join a team in the Table Tennis Bundesliga, the country’s top (33)______ table tennis association.
A “comfort zone” is a space—whether (34) ______ or mental—where we feel secure and (35) ______, free from the pressure to learn or strive(奋斗). While it may sound wonderful, (36)______ too long in this state carries the risk of stagnation (停滞)— much like a clear pond that gradually becomes choked. with weeds (野草).
Fan had no desire to stagnate or rest on his laurels. He chose to pursue new challenges and improve his skills in a completely unfamiliar environment.
I deeply relate to Fan’s decision to step beyond the familiar. Many years ago, I left my own comfort zone in Canada and moved to China. I wanted to test myself to see if I could survive and eventually thrive(茁壮成长)in a country with a radically different language and culture. There were difficult moments, without a doubt, but I leaned to (37) ______, and in doing so, I grew. I’ve experienced and achieved things that would have been impossible if I had chosen to stay where I felt secure.
Not everything in life comes easily, but it is through challenges that we grow. Even failure can become a source of strength if we’re (38)______ to learn from it Just as English poet Robert Browning wrote: “A man’s reach should exceed bus grasp.” It suggests we should always strive for something just beyond our current capabilities, as this (39) ______ pursuit of higher goals drives personal growth.
The lesson here is clear:Don’t let your comfort zone become a prison. Life is simply too (40)______ and there are always more mountains to climb.
Ⅲ. Reading Comprehension(45分 )
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
It is the best-known-and perhaps the most infamous-theory of dreams in the Western world At the turn of the last century, Sigmund Freud published his book, The Interpretation of Dreams. The Austrian neurologist(神经学家)argued that our dreams are nothing more than the 41 -good or bad-that we are trying to fulfill in our waking lives. Despite the theory’s fame, it has been 42 by modern dream scientists for overemphasizing the importance of sex and the role of childhood experiences. 43 , a new series of experiments have demonstrated that at least one part of Freud’s theory is correct after all:We dream of things we are trying our best to 44 .
The first of these experiments was conducted by Daniel Wegner, a researcher who noticed that when we are trying hard to ignore a thought, it often just keeps 45 . He suggested that this is because we have two 46 processes at work at the same time when we try to ignore a thought. One is an operating process that actively ignores the thought. The other is a monitoring process that keeps an eve out for the ignored thought. Wegner suggested that these processes might 47 when we are fast asleep. 48 , he managed to test this idea in his experiments.
In one of the experiments, participants were asked to 49 a person they knew and then to spend five minutes 50 about whatever came to their mind before going to bed that night The first group of these participants were told not to think about the person during their five minutes of writing, whereas a second group were told to think about the person. A third group could think about whatever they wanted When they woke up in the morning, they all 51 any dreams they could remember having the previous night The results were 52 : Group1 dreamed of the person much more than Group 2 and Group 3. Wegner called this the “dream rebound (反弹) effect”
Since that experiment, we have learned a lot more about the “dream rebound effect.” For example, people who tend to ignore their thoughts not only dream more about their 53 experiences from waking life - unpleasant situations, 54 - but also have worse sleep quality and higher levels of stress, anxiety and 55 than others.
There are still plenty of aspects of Freud’s theory of dreaming that haven’t been (and can’t be) tested. Nevertheless, we really need to pay more attention to our dreams-they are the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious, where at least many ignored thoughts, it would seem, live on.

Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional. or psychological, and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout(精疲力竭). Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents and coaches’ criticism to heart and find a flaw(缺陷)in themselves
Coaches and parents should also be cautious(谨慎的)that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The result of the game should not be more important than the process of leaning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the result and find fault with youngsters’ performances. Positive reinforcement(强化)should be provided regardless of the result. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates(激励)and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.
56. An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is ______.
A. to make sports less competitive
B. to make sports more challenging
C. to reduce their mental stress
D. to increase their sense of success
57. According to the passage, sport is positive for young people because ______.
A. it can help them lean more about society
B. it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves
C. it enables them to find flaws in themselves
D. it can provide them with valuable experiences
58. Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes ______.
A. without realizing criticism may destroy their self-confidence
B. in order to make them remember life’s lessons
C. believing that criticism is beneficial for their early development
D. so as to put more pressure on them
59. According to the passage, parents and coaches should ______.
A. help children to win every game
B. pay more attention to letting children enjoy sports
C. enable children to understand the positive aspect of sports
D. train children to deal with stress
(B)
A university education is of huge and direct benefit to the individual. Graduates earn more than non-graduates. Meanwhile, social mobility is ever more dependent on having a degree. However, only some people have it So the individual, not the taxpayers, should pay for it. There are pressing calls on the resources of the government. Using taxpayers’ money to help a small number of people to earn high incomes in the future is not one of them.
Full government funding is not very good for universities. Adam Smith worked in a Scottish university whose teachers lived off student fees. He knew and looked down upon 18th-century Oxford, where the academics(大学教师)lived comfortably off the income received from the government Guaranteed(有保证的)salaries, Smith argued, were the enemy of hard work;and when the academics were lazy and incompetent(无能力的), the students were similarly lazy.
If students have to pay for their education, they not only work harder, but also demand more from their teachers. And their teachers have to keep them satisfied. If that means taking teaching seriously, and giving less time to their own research interests, that is surely something to celebrate.
Many people believe that higher education should be free because it is good for the economy. Many graduates clearly do contribute to national wealth, but so do all the businesses that invest (投资)and create jobs. If you believe that the government should pay for higher education because graduates are economically productive, you should also believe that the government should pay part of business costs. Anyone promising to create jobs should receive a gift of capital (资本)from the government to invest. Therefore, it is the individual, not the government, who should pay for their university education.
60. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refers to ______ .
A. taxpayers B. pressing calls
C. college graduates D. government resources
61. The author thinks that with full government funding ______.
A. teachers are less satisfied B. students are more demanding
C. students will become more competent D. teachers will spend less time on teaching
62. The author mentions businesses in Paragraph 4in order to ______.
A. argue against free university education
B. call on them to finance students’ studies
C. encourage graduates to go into business
D. show their contribution to higher education

①A group of 41 states and the District of Columbia began a legal case against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Whats App and Messenger, ansistiag that the company knowingly used features on its platforms to cause children to overuse them. The accusations in the lawsuit raise a deeper question about behavior. Are young people becoming addicted to social media and the internet Here’s what the research has found.
②David Greenfield, a psychologist and founder of the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction in West Hartford, Conn. , said the devices tempt users with some powerful approaches. One is “intermittent reinforcement,” which creates the idea that a user could get a reward at any time. But when the reward comes is unpredictable. Adults are easily influenced, he noted but young people are particularly at risk because the brain regions that are involved in resisting temptation and reward are not nearly as developed in children and teenagers as in adults. Moreover, the adolescent brain is especially accustomed to social connections, and “social media is all a perfect opportunity to connect with other people .”
③For many years, the scientific community typically defined addiction in relation to substances, such as drugs, and not behaviors, such as gambling or internet use. That has gradually changed. In 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the official reference for mental health conditions, introduced the idea of internet gaming addiction.
④A subsequent study explored broadening the definition to “internet addiction.” The author suggested further exploring diagnostic criteria and the language, for instance. noting that terms like “problematic use” and even the word “internet” were open to broad interpretation. given the many forms the information and its delivery can take.
⑤Dr. Michael Rich, the director of the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital, said he discouraged the use of the word “addiction” because the internet, if used effectively and with limits: was not merely useful but also essential to everyday file.
⑥Greenfield agreed that there clearly are valuable uses for the internet and that the definition of how much is too much can vary, but he said there also were obvious cases where immoderate use disturbs school, sleep and other vital inspects of a healthy life. Too many young consumers “can’t put it down,” he said “The internet, including social media like Meta, are the drugs affecting the mind. ”
63. What was Meta accused of
A. It added problematic features to its platform.
B. It started a discussion to mislead young people.
C. It tempted children to use social media too much.
D. It conducted illegal research on its parent company.
64. According to David Greenfield, users tend to be addicted to social media and the internet due to ______.
A. their under-developed brain
B. the random pattern of rewards
C. their desire to be socially connected
D. the possibility of escaping from reality
65. What can be concluded about the study introduced in Paragraph 4
A. Addiction is something about behaviors instead of substances.
B. The online language can be interpreted from a broad perspective.
C. Current diagnostic criteria of “internet addiction” isn’t satisfactory.
D. There should be an agreement on the definition of the word “internet”.
66. Dr. Michael Rich and David Greenfield both agree that ______.
A. proper use of the internet does good to children
B. the internet is to blame for disturbing healthy life
C. there are cases against immoderate use of the internet
D. the word “addiction” is improperly used on the internet
Section C
Directions: Read the following passage Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. Nevertheless, confidence plays a significant role in determining the effectiveness of fear-based motivation strategies. B. However, if students are not confident, then fear-based approaches could rigger feelings of anxiety. C. Leaders, managers, and teachers have often used one of these ideas to inspire people to work harder and achieve more. D. Taken together, these studies show that fear-based motivation to complicated. E. They may be inspired to learn new things that will help their business or find mentors who can support them. E. But does this motivate or discourage business people Again, it’s nor straightforward.
What motivates you to work or study harder Is it the thought of success and all the amazing things that you can achieve or is it the fear of failure and worry about all the things that can go wrong for you 67 . But is one better than the other
A recent study looked at the effect of fear-based strategies on British secondary school students. As is so often the case, it’s complicated They found that if a test is seen as important, and students are optimistic that they can succeed, then the fear of failure can be used successfully by teachers to motivate these learners. 68 . It can in turn lead them to do worse on the test than they would have done otherwise. The study also found that if students are disengaged and don’t care about the test in the first place, then, unsurprisingly, the fear of failure is not likely to motivate them.
Entrepreneurs often run the risk of failure. It’s a fact that most new companies will fail 69 The personal consequences of failure can be significant, and so founders may be motivated to work harder to avoid them. A study carried out on British and Canadian entrepreneurs found that fear of failure can improve problem solving, as people are motivated to anticipate and resolve potential issues. However, the study also showed that it can lead to increased procrastination as people focus too much on what they personally fear, rather than what would be best for the business. If someone is less confident about their business idea, then they may find their decision- making negatively affected by their fears.
70 It can drive confident people to do better, but it can also increase our doubts and turn them into barriers.
