The Person I Respect
The person I respect is Yue Fei, a renowned general in the Southern Song Dynasty who devoted his life to defending his country against foreign invasion.
He led his army to win numerous battles against the Jin Dynasty, and his loyalty to the country was reflected in the four characters "Jing Zhong Bao Guo" tattooed on his back. It is his unshakable patriotism and the military spirit that have been touching and inspiring us for hundreds of years.
From him, I learn that patriotism is not just a word but a commitment to safeguard one's homeland. We should cherish our country and spare no efforts to contribute to its prosperity.

After a few minutes of silence, she whispered to Sarah, “I need to tell you something.” Her voice trembled as she admitted copying parts of the essay, her cheeks turning red with shame. Sarah’s eyes widened in surprise at first, but then she gave Anne’s shoulder a comforting pat. “It takes courage to admit mistakes,” Sarah said firmly. “Let’s go to tell Mrs. White together.” With Sarah’s support, Anne carefully wrote a sincere apology letter, explaining exactly what she had done wrong and promising to make up for it with her own hard work.
Sarah held Anne’s hand tightly as they walked towards Mrs. White’s office. Anne’s palms were sweaty and her heart raced, but she kept walking. When Mrs. White read the letter, her serious expression gradually softened. “I appreciate your honesty,” she said finally. “Everyone makes mistakes, but only brave people correct them.” That evening, Anne stayed up late rewriting her essay completely on her own. Though the new version wasn’t as perfect as the copied one, it was truly hers. As she handed it in the next day, Anne realized that being honest might be difficult, but it always leaves you feeling lighter and prouder.

W: Oh, I love this place. It is so peaceful, even though it is near the center of Beijing.

M: Which fish do you like most (15)
W: Well, they’re all gold, so it’s hard to choose among them. (15)
M: No, look. There are a few black ones — and there’s a purple one. (15)
W: I suppose I like him the most, because he’s all on his own.
M: I wonder if these fish are related to the emperor’s original ones. (14)
W: We’ll never know. The garden is hundreds of years old. (16)
M: Let’s go to the building over there, opposite the big rocks. (17)
W: OK. (17) It looks interesting. I think the emperor’s big chair is in there. (14)
M: I want to see the waterfalls as well.
W: We’ll look at that afterwards.

Are you looking for a big adventure Then Europe in 2025 is calling your name!
London Marathon 27 April 2025
This popular marathon transforms the streets of London into a moving festival! This flat 26.2 mile course takes runners past some of London’s most famous landmarks! My brother and I were driving home together and became absorbed in a conversation. Because of this, my brother took a wrong turn.
Unluckily, the wrong turn took us towards a bridge and we had no way to turn back. Unwillingly, my brother paid the bridge toll(费) and drove on. He was clearly frustrated about the mistake and the needless waste of $4.
We eventually reached an exit slip-way and, as we took it, my brother noticed a beat-up black Mustang pulled over to the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tire and needed a wrench(扳手) to get it off.
My brother gave him a wrench, and then offered to help him change the flat. We started getting to know the young man from a rough neighborhood nearby. He said this has been a bad week for him; earlier he had gotten into a minor car accident, and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us, “A breath of fresh air,” and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 and tried to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge and took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve.”
What struck me most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his irritation for the mistake into positive energy and managed to see a chance to help even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.
24. What can we infer about the author’s brother
A. He always helps strangers in trouble on the road.
B. He didn’t ignore others’ needs despite his frustration.
C. He helped the young man mainly to cheer himself up.
D. He felt less frustrated after seeing the young man’s flat tire.
25. Why did the young guy call the author and the brother “A breath of fresh air”
A. Because they rejected his money. B. Because they also got on that bridge.
C. Because they offered a chance to serve D. Because they turned up when he needed help.
26. What does the underlined word “irritation” probably mean in the last paragraph
A. Fright. B. Annoyance. C. Excitement. D. Embarrassment.
27. Which is the best title for the text
A. The Bridge We Were Meant To Cross. B. A Terrible Experience We Experienced.
C. My Brother Who Took A Wrong Turn. D. A Young Guy We Were Grateful To.

A free online platform that allows speakers to practice in front of thousands of virtual audience has been released to help many people deal with their anxiety when making a speech. Dr Chris Macdonald, who created the online platform, said the approach was an attempt to reduce the lengthy waits or high costs people often face when seeking help.
The Virtual Reality Public Speaking platform is based on the idea that facing fears directly can help reduce them. It is combined with breathing exercises and eye movements that help slow the heart rate and control the fear response. People using the technology can practice speaking in various virtual reality (VR) settings, from an empty classroom or small audience of virtual figures who feel bored and sleepy, to a stadium of 10,000 viewers, with the option to add distractions such as flashing cameras and loud noises.
A recent study suggests the platform could be beneficial. The research involved 29 volunteers from China, who each finished a 30-minute session in which they switched between using the VR system and practicing a simple breathing exercise. After that, they delivered a prepared one-minute speech in English to 34 people in real life. The percentage of students who said they were anxious public speakers fell from 65% before the experiment to 20% after the presentations, while the percentage who described themselves as confident rose from 31% to 79%. More students said they enjoyed public speaking after using the platform.
But Cella, a psychologist and leader of the virtual reality lab at King’s College London, who was not involved in the work, said there was a potential risk that overdependence on the platform could increase people’s avoidance of public speaking. “There is a lot of enthusiasm and problem-solving energy from digital innovators to address mental health challenges in our society. But unfortunately, many products like this platform have poor uptake (利用) and short lifespan due to the rapid development and limited evidence,” he said. “As with any emerging technology, it’s crucial to evaluate its real-world impact, how people use it, whether it truly improves confidence and reduces anxiety, and what unintended effects might arise.”
28. Who may find this platform useful
A. A graduate preparing for a job interview.
B. A delivery driver taking a road safety test.
C. A coach planning athletes’ training workouts.
D. A programmer giving instructions to a computer.

People are already paying more and more for food due to global warming — and rising temperatures will drive food prices a lot higher in the next decade. According to a study by the European Central Bank, by 2035, higher temperatures alone will be pushing up worldwide food prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year.
To find out how this is affecting food prices, Maximilian Kotz at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and his colleagues examined data on the monthly prices and weather conditions in 121 countries between 1996 and 2021. By looking for associations between food prices and factors such as the average monthly temperature, temperature changes, and measures of drought and extreme rainfall, they found a strong link between the average temperature and the food prices a month or so later. In regions north of 40 degrees, like the latitude (纬度) of New York City and Beijing, warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led to falling food prices. But above-average temperatures increased food prices in summer and at all times in the rest of the world.
“The study didn’t look at why prices rose, but the likely explanation is that extreme heat is reducing yields,” Kotz says. “Crops may be drying out on the vine when they should be being harvested.” Factors such as extreme rainfall had less impact on food prices than average temperatures. This may be because flooding tends to be localized, while above-average temperatures can be very widespread.
Other studies have reached similar conclusions. Kotz’s team then went further by investigating how food prices could change based on average temperature rises in climate model prediction. In the worst situation, global food inflation (食品通胀) due to climate change goes over 4% per year by 2060. “We need to be aware of the fact that climate change brings huge new challenges for food security,” says Kotz. “Warming-fuelled extreme weather is increasingly affecting food production around the world. If farmers don’t adapt their practices to better cope with rising temperatures, the losses will become more serious.”
32. What does the study focus on
A. The factors in the rising living costs.
B. The impact of climate change on food prices.
C. The effects of natural disasters on food production.
D. The comparison of food prices in different regions.
33. How did researchers reach their conclusions
A. By analyzing a mass of data. B. By referring to previous studies.
C. By tracking some cities for years. D. By conducting a survey among farmers.
34. What is the main reason for the rising food prices according to Kotz
A. Frequent rainfall. B. Extreme high temperature.
C. The increasing demand for crops. D. The restrictions of trade policies.
35. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph
A. To investigate how food prices change. B. To predict the loss caused by the heat wave. C. To urge farmers to adjust their practices. D. To clarify the situation of global food inflation.

Humor: An Essential Life Skill
Mark Twain said, “Humor is the great thing, the saving thing. The minute it crops up, all our irritations slip away, and a sunny spirit takes their place.” He’s certainly not wrong. Humor may very well be the great thing. 36
Having a good sense of humor is possibly one of the best things you can do for your physical fitness. 37 Besides, it can improve your cardiovascular (心血管的) health.

Albert Einstein owed his brilliant mind to having a child-like sense of humor. 39 Researchers in Austria discovered that those who have a sense of humor have higher verbal (言语) and nonverbal intelligence than their less humorous peers, because it takes both cognitive (认知的) and emotional abilities to process and produce humor.
The benefits of humor are so great that universities like Stanford are offering business courses on humor in the workplace. 40 Students will be taught how to “better achieve business goals and develop stronger bonds”. It doesn’t stop there, though. Researchers believe humor has the power to actually “make change in the world”.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Anne, a hardworking senior student, always took pride in doing her own work. One rainy afternoon while she was browsing at the local bookstore, a colorful magazine about climate change attracted her attention. As she was looking through the pages, one particular article stood out. Its writing was so clear, powerful and well-organized that she immediately decided to buy the magazine, thinking it might provide helpful references (参考) for future school projects.
When the deadline for her English essay arrived, Anne found herself completely unprepared. The topic of the composition “Environmental Protection Today” seemed quite difficult. After staring at a blank page for nearly an hour, her frustration growing with each passing minute, she suddenly remembered the magazine. With shaky hands, she pulled it out from her desk drawer and began copying several key paragraphs, changing just a few words here and there to make it seem different. “It’s just for reference.” she thought to herself nervously, but deep down she knew it was wrong.
The next week, Mrs. White held up Anne’s essay to the whole class. “This is an outstanding essay!” the teacher said excitedly. Anne’s heart beat fast as she heard words like “original thinking” and “excellent analysis”. Each compliment (赞美) made her feel more ashamed. Then came the worst part— Mrs. White wanted to send Anne’s essay in an important writing competition.
Anne imagined all the possibilities. The magazine wasn’t well-known, so perhaps no one would ever notice the copied sections. But even if no one knew it, could she keep this secret in her heart
At lunch in the crowded cafeteria, her best friend Sarah rushed over and hugged her tightly. “I just heard about your essay! I’m so proud of you!” Sarah shouted excitedly, her eyes shining with true admiration. Seeing how Sarah believed in her writing talent so much, Anne suddenly realized that she wasn’t just lying to her teacher — she was lying to everyone who trusted her.
