Recently, many people have fallen in love with the cute marmots(土拨鼠) in the movie Ne Zha 2. 1 , people start to buy real marmots online as pets. However, many organizations have quickly 2 the public that these wild animals are actually high-risk carriers of the plague(鼠疫).
Marmots are common rodents(啮齿动物) in North-west China. Listed as a second-class protected animal in China, they always 3 cool mountain grasslands, open deserts, and rocky hills as their homes. They are good at digging holes and each hole has a different purpose. They mainly 4 fresh grass and juicy plants like apples or lettuce. Living in family groups, these social creatures work together and communicate often to survive in the tough 5 .
6 marmots may look harmless, these furry animals carry plague bacteria(鼠疫杆菌), which cause a 7 disease that killed over 100 million people in historic outbreaks like the Black Death. This infection(传染病) can spread through minor cuts or even breath droplets, causing high fever, painful lumps(肿块) under the skin, and bleeding. Without treatment, it remains highly 8 with survival chances as low as zero.
The recent online sales of marmots have raised alarms. While their round faces might make us want to get close, health organizations remind everyone that cuteness isn't worth 10 lives. Protecting both wildlife and public health means watching animals safely from a distance.

People were very happy to hear that UNESCO added the Spring Festival to its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. There was more good news. On December 5, 2024, UNESCO added three more amazing traditions to the same list:
· Traditional Li textile techniques
· The Qiang New Year festival
· The way to build Chinese wooden bridges
1 They were once on a list called the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding(急需保护的). 2 But with careful protection and efforts by communities, they are now safe and on the new list. This is a big step in making sure these traditions don't disappear.
Li textile techniques are special. They have beautiful shapes. These shapes show the art, the long history and traditions of the Li people in China.
3 It is a time for family and community meetings, but fewer people celebrate it now, so it needs protection.
People build Chinese wooden bridges with old tools and traditional skills. They are strong and beautiful. But they are hard to protect as modern cities grow fast and people sometimes forget old ways.
Experts say it is very important to protect intangible cultural heritage. Traditions likeLi textile techniques and the Qiang New Year festival are not just old ways. 4 Without these traditions, we might lose an important part of who we are.
China is working hard to protect these traditions. 5 Cultural heritage belongs to all of us around the world—— not just for today, but also for our descendants(后代). One expert said that protecting these traditions keeps them going. They bring people together and make us think of the beauty of our cultures.
A. More importantly, they are a part of daily life for people and teach us about history, art, and the values of different cultures.
B. Intangible cultural heritage is only about old ways that no longer fit in modern life.
C. This means they were in danger of being lost because fewer people were practising them.
D. This effort is not just for the country itself, but also to share these traditions with the world.
E. The Qiang New Year festival is an important holiday for the Qiang people.
F. The three traditions are all special and show the rich culture of China.
C
In the wild, wolves with broken legs often f 1 an unlucky fate(命运), waiting for death. Yet in the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve in Qinghai, one such wolf had a 2 fate. It grew from a poor, thin one to a fat, happy wolf because tourists in the area often fed it.
This act of k 3 led people to ask: Should tourists feed the wolf Supporters(支持者) argue that without feeding, the wolf would die. But those who do not a 4 with the idea believe that humans should not mess with the natural order. Science, however, p 5 us with an answer.
Research published in Scientific Reports studied h 6 human feeding influenced the lives of bottlenose dolphins(宽吻海豚) near Bunbury, Australia. After years of studying, the scientists found that dolphins looking for food from boats had a higher r 7 of death than those who found food themselves. This is because they may get hit by boats or caught by fishing nets.
Feeding wild animals may lead them to d 8 on humans for food, warned DaiQiang, a scientist at the Chengdu Institute of Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. What’s more, s 9 animals may bring diseases to people who feed them.
So, if we come across a wild animal that seems to need our h 10 , what should we do Qi Xinzhang from Xining Wildlife Park said that it's best to report the animal to the authorities(官方机构) instead of just feeding it.
