In a typical month Allexa Morales’ husband, Andrew, works 10 days as a firefighter: one day on, one day off, followed by a few days of rest. However, since the fires broke out in Los Angeles, a lot in his life has greatly changed.
Andrew is ____13____ at Los Angeles Fire Department Station 69, which is in the Palisades. He was home when the fires started last Monday. Allexa says, “We didn’t think much of it at first. Instead, we thought it would be taken care of ____14____. After all, it’s not fire season. Then, Monday night, when the winds started getting really bad, things got out of control.”
Allexa is thankful that her family’s home hasn’t been directly affected by the fires. However, the most challenging part of managing life since the fires has been taking responsibility as a ____15____ to their 4-year-old daughter, Ava, and 9-month-old son, Theo, while Andrew is away.
“Theo was in the NICU for a month after he was born, and there are things we need to work through,” Allexa says. “My daughter, Ava, is 4, and she can’t stand a single second without her dad around. I’ll tell Andrew, ‘She’s ____16____ you to be here in the morning to take her to school.’ ”
“That’s my selfishness coming through,” she adds. “I’m thinking about him taking her to school, and then I have to remind myself — people ____17____ him, and I’m here supporting him. It’s just that Ava’s at an age where she wants her dad with her all the time, and that makes it ____18____ on me.” Since her kids are so young, they aren’t able to fully understand what is going on. Allexa says Ava knows that her dad goes to work to help people and put out fires, but that’s about it.
Allexa adds that her husband and the other firefighters still have a long way to go before the fires are fully under control. “They also do a lot of cleanups. The strike teams that are still being sent out are going in to check for any ____19____ — people who didn’t get out in time,” she explains. “A lot of houses still have hotcpots. They go in and put those out. Over the next few months, different teams will be sent out to handle the ongoing cleanup.” she continues. “We have so many restaurants and people ____20____ bringing food, water and something else. It’s just lovely seeing so many people come together.”

Unfortunately for many of us, our inborn curiosity disappears early on. Can you remember—before the responsibilities of growing up consumed us up—when life had room for wonder Do you remember life before powerful social media had taken control
Indulging (沉湎) in the unbridled curiosity of childhood might not seem related to our grown-up worries. Or maybe it feels like a luxury that we just don’t have the time for. But nothing could be further from the truth.
If you Google “intellectual curiosity”, you might be shocked at what you find. According to various studies and articles, intellectual curiosity helps us grow in many aspects.
So, what exactly is this surprisingly powerful character trait
Intellectual curiosity is an inclination (倾向) to gain knowledge. People with intellectual curiosity are more likely to have a positive attitude and an active interest toward the world. It is also more deliberate (刻意的) and focused than the uncontrolled and even dangerous curiosity of childhood. When we were children, which of us learned the hard way that fire is hot But instead of a painful lesson, deliberately putting time and energy into learning something new can give us professional and relational awards in return.
One study suggests that a “hungry mind” is one of the top factors that influences academic (学业的) performance. It finds that students with a strong hunger for knowledge always perform better on study. This mindset encourages curiosity and an active way of learning, helping students overcome challenges and study new information. Other studies suggest that showing an interest in others will do more for our relationships than showing others how interesting we are. Intellectually curious people enjoy socializing more and show greater openness while addressing disagreements. Being curious about why others think and feel the way they do helps us understand them better.
So, ask questions! “How does this work ” “Why do it this way and not another way ” “Why do you feel like that ” Developing intellectual curiosity helps us succeed and also points the way to a friendlier, more interesting world.
27. The story of the 3-year-old is to show ________.
A. children can challenge the adults by asking why
B. children usually ask questions to attract attention
C. children have a natural hunger to understand the world
D. children prefer to ask questions rather than answer them
28. Which of the following is most likely driven by intellectual curiosity
A. A girl reads a novel for pleasure and relaxation.
B. A boy explores a topic through hands-on experiences.
C. A man who worries about his son asks teachers for help.
D. A woman, pleased by the taste of a dish, decides to order more.
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Why Do We Ask “Why” B. How Can We Ask Quality Questions
C. The Curiosity of Childhood: A Lost Ability D. From Childhood Wonder to Lifelong Curiosity
D
Authentic people enjoy better psychological health and a greater sense of meaning in their lives, research shows.
“There’s a really strong connection between feeling authentic (真实的) and life feeling meaningful,” said Rebecca Schlegel, a professor of psychology at Texas A&M University. “You basically have a good story about why you do the things that you do.” she said. “Authenticity isn’t a fixed quality, but an ongoing process of deciding what to think, what to value, and who to be,” said Jeffrey Hanson, a professor at New College of Florida. “It’s a matter of becoming someone rather than being someone.” People identify with an ideal self (认同理想自我) of their choosing and become more authentic as they work hard to reach that goal. An ideal self should be achievable. And its nature should be moral (道德的). “Through studies, we find that people think that behaving morally makes them feel more authentic,” Schlegel said.
Inauthenticity bears hallmarks, too. “You’re not even sure why you’re doing the thing. Or you’re doing it just to please somebody else and you don’t agree with it,” Schlegel said. According to her research, inauthenticity can harm psychological health. It’s linked to higher levels of anxiety, stress or depression. It predicts difficulties in finding meaning in life while authenticity is positively connected to self-control, better decision-making and satisfaction with relationships, she noted.
“Not only does authenticity predict greater well-being, but also a sense of meaning in life. One can’t just will the ideal self into being. In search of your ideal self, find pursuits (追求) that you can fully accept as your own.” Hanson said. Even if a pursuit is a good goal objectively, it doesn’t mean that it’s authent c for everyone. For example, Hanson said that he has been interested in philosophy(哲学) since his teen years, so he has fully accepted being a philosophy professor. Instead, becoming a chemistry professor would not be authentic or as meaningful for him, even if it’s objectively fantastic.
At times, we all must do things that don’t feel authentic, such as taking courses or working at jobs we dislike. However, the big decisions in our life should make sense, meaning that we have a good reason for why we did it. Challenges are unavoidable. We experience failures or don’t achieve an important goal. “Should we give up and run away from reality ” he asked.
“Stay flexible or the journey to an ideal self,” Hanson said. He recalled a student whose biggest goal was to get into a top university. When he was turned down, he told Hanson that it was the worst day in his life. He went to a backup college then. Surprisingly, after one term, he felt meaningful there.
“We have to keep an attitude of openness to being surprised by a possibility that we didn’t imagine in the first place,” Hanson said, “and surprised by the possibility that something that we didn’t know that we wanted really was the ideal for us all along.”

32. Which of the following is an example of “a pursuit of an ideal self”

D. Tom volunteered in the community to do his share for a good cause.

Is it better to be happy or successful
Ben: Hi, Ann! What are you up to What’s got you so deep in thought
Ann: Oh, hey, Ben! I’m just thinking about my life and considering a job change.
Ben: Really From what you’ve told me, you’re very successful.
Ann: I am, but I don’t find very much fulfillment (成就感) in the work I do.
Ben: I’m really surprised! Doesn’t success bring fulfillment
Ann: I thought so for a while, but I’m finding that’s not always the case.
Ben: So, you think being satisfied and happy is as important as success or even more
Ann: I’m beginning to think it’s more important. Happiness brings about better health. It lowers stress, lowers the risk of heart disease and improves the immune system (免疫系统).
Ben: I get that. But success brings stability (稳定). Stability brings sense of safety and peace of mind.
Ann: But can you have peace if you’re striving (working terribly hard) all the time I think it might be better to be satisfied. Then you can enjoy life more and create better relationships with others.
Ben: Those are good points But I feel that striving for success encourages personal growth. Personal growth allows us to live our life to the fullest.
Ann: My present job has proven to me that success can be very stressful. Stress can lead to health problems. But studies show that happy people are likely to live longer.
Ben: But what good is a long life without a future Success opens doors to further opportunities, which can create a brighter future. It also brings recognition from others, and that increases one’s self-esteem, so that one can have strong self-respect and self-confidence.
Ann: But I’m none the happier for all my recognition. It feels pretty empty to me.
Ben: Well, you can use your success to help others. Successful people usually have the resources and influence to make a positive influence on society.
Ann: True. But there are many ways to do that. You don’t always have to do something great to have a positive influence.
Ben: What do you mean
Ann: When we are joyful, we can spread joy. We can also encourage others, which has a positive influence.
Ben: I see your point. Maybe the answer isn’t in choosing one or the other but in having a balance. Maybe we need both success and happiness to truly thrive.
Ann: That’s worth thinking about!
34. Why is Ann considering a job change
