In Telangana, southern India, a 17-year-old teenager, Hemesh Chadalavada, is making waves with a game-changing invention that has the potential to revolutionize dementia (痴呆) care.
When Hemesh was 12 his grandmother Jayasree, then 63, accidentally left the gas on in the kitchen after making herself a cup of tea. The incident frightened Hemesh who found himself wondering what would have happened if he hadn’t been there.
Witnessing his grandmother suffer from dementia, Hernesh knew that he had to do something, so he turned to the Internet. After watching robotics courses online and taking advantage of his passion for coding, Hemesh set about creating a smart device.
He spent time in a day centre to learn more about the needs of people with dementia. And 20 failed versions later, the Alpha Monitor was born. Using advanced machine learning technology, the device, which can be worn on the wrist, sends an automatic alert to caregivers when any abnormal activity is detected, such as if the user falls down, wanders off, or has an accident. While other devices rely on Wi-Fi and are therefore unable to detect movements outside a limited range, the Alpha Monitor uses long-range technology that can detect a person’s movements more than a mile away in cities and three miles away in the countryside.
Sadly, Jayasree passed away last year, but her death has only reinforced Hemesh’s determination to continue his mission of improving dementia care far and wide. Dhruv Saidava, Hemesh’s mentor, said, “I first met Hemesh in 2019 during Ideate for India... Hemesh stood out. What set him apart was his exceptional talent for thorough research and hands-on ability.”
In future, he plans to do research at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and improve the Alpha Monitor so that it’s ready for market. He has made it clear that he wants the device to be sold at an affordable price so that it’s accessible to people in less developed countries.
4. What inspired Hemesh’s invention
A. The concern about his grandma’s security.
B. The enthusiasm for robotics development.
C. The sympathy for people suffering from dementia.
D. The desire to research into machine learning technology.
5. How is Alpha Monitor superior to other devices
A. It goes through a series of tests.
B. It can detect abnormal activities.
C. It is equipped with an alert system.
D. It monitors a person’s farther distance.
6. What does the underlined word “reinforced” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Changed. B. Illustrated. C. Strengthened. D. Restored.
7. Which of the following can best describe Hemesh
A. Strong-willed and adventurous. B. Warm-hearted and creative.

In the heart of the Kanien’ keha Nation (卡尼恩克哈部族) in Canada, McComber, a native language teacher reflected on a question raised by Maori (毛利语) language advocate Sir Karetu: what was his dream for the future of his language
Kanien’ keha language is endangered. And for decades, McComber has worked hard to operate a native language school. At the turn of the century as it encountered more barriers, McComber looked around the world for help and inspiration, and Karetu was the answer. “Don’t wait for money or approval; just do the work,” Karetu told him. It’s the same message Karetu carried with him decades ago, when the Maori language was also in danger.
In the early 1970s, young Maori advocates in New Zealand marched to the government, demanding Maori be taught in all public schools. In 1982, Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi established Kohanga Reo, an engaging language program where Maori was the only language taught, spoken and used both in the classroom and at home, and the courses focused on their history and culture. “Grandparents became teachers,” she says. “The difference-maker was that the Kohanga Reo was entirely community-led. Families raised the money to rent classroom spaces, and volunteers planned and taught classes.”
Translated in English as “language nest”, the Kohanga Reo model quickly became an important cultural export and inspired other minority communities worldwide. “Our parents ruled,” a student of McComber’s nest school says, “They wanted to teach us the beauty of our language, our culture, and who we are. And it has given me the confidence to speak and read with ease in both English and Kanien’ keha.”
The model helped communities view the world through their ancestors’ eyes, ensuring the survival of their way of life. “It’s not just about language,” McComber can now answer that question. “It’s everything.”
8. Why did McComber turn to Karetu for help
A. Karetu also spoke Kanien’ keha. B. Karetu once faced a similar crisis.
C He needed his financial support. D. He desired his tips on language learning.
9. What contributed to the success of Kohanga Reo
A. Expansion of public schools. B. Flexibility of the courses.
C. Rule of the students’ parents. D. Support from the community.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The impact of the Kohanga Reo model. B. The importance of parents’ involvement.
C. The procedure for building the nest school. D. The case of a student achieving his goal.
11. By saying “It’s everything”, McComber suggests ________.
A. guaranteeing the survival of their own schools B. keeping their culture for future generations
C. purifying their unique minority language D. transforming the tradition of their ancestors
D
We all know Bali, a tropical paradise with clear beaches and clean waters. Now, picture a serious reality: waterways choked with electrical goods, and tons of plastic waste. This is the shocking truth facing Bali, an island battling a severe plastic pollution crisis.
Bali's situation is alarming. Annually, the island produces 1.6 million tonnes of waste, with303,000 tonnes being plastic. Shockingly, over half of this remains uncollected, with 33,000 tonnes polluting the waterways. Indonesia's contribution to oceanic plastic pollution is incredible. with estimates suggesting 1.3 million tonnes of unmanaged plastic entering the ocean each year.
In the heart of Bali, a dedicated team from Sungai Watch braves the dirty waters every week. Led by Kelly Bencheghib, they went through rivers, facing the mixture of waste—— from thrown food to dead animals. Despite the tiring conditions, there's a sense of fulfillment in seeing the rivers breathe again.
Sungai Watch, started by the Bencheghib siblings(兄弟姐妹), emerged from their childhood awareness of Bali's growing plastic problem. Beginning as a local initiative, they have now expanded their reach through social media, attracting global attention. Their efforts motivated the government to take actions, including a significant restoration plan for the Citarum River, one of the world's most polluted waterways.
The organization has fixed 268 rubbish barriers across Bali and East Java, funded by community and business donations. These barriers have proven effective, trapping a significant amount of waste, as evidenced by a 2019 study. Yet, the challenge is great. Most of the collected waste ends up in landfills, with only a small amount being recycled into furniture by Sungai Design, their social enterprise arm.
The efforts of Sungai Watch highlight a crucial point: individual and community actions can make a difference. However, they also highlight the vastness of the plastic pollution problem. Cleaning up is just the beginning. The ultimate goal is for initiatives like Sungai Watch to become unnecessary, a dream where Bali returns to its true, unspoiled paradise.
12. Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To explain a rule. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To present a fact. D. To make a prediction.
13. What can we learn about Sungai Watch from paragraph 4
A. It was launched by the local government.
B. Its role matters hugely since its establishment.
C. Its goal is to gain global influence on social media.
D. It has completed the restoration plan for the Citarum River.
14. What can the team Sungai Watch do at present
A. Collect and recycle the waste.
B. Use plastics for mass production of furniture.
C. Raise everyone's awareness of healthy living.
D. Donate fund to local communities and enterprises.
15. What is the best title of the text
A. The Bencheghib Siblings' Dream B. The Committed Sungai Watch in Baili
C. Bali's Battle Against Plastic Pollution D. Working Together to Keep Bali Beautiful

“I’m afraid you can’t come aboard without the fare, dear,” the bus driver, Mr. Thompson, informed a young girl who had attempted to board with just a handful of coins. She appeared to be about 8 years old, and he was feeling particularly impatient that day.
“Could you please, sir I really need to visit my grandma,” the little girl said, her eyes wide with hope. “You’ll have to get the money from your parents and try again,” Mr. Thompson replied, gently but firmly, signaling for her to step off. Feeling sad, she slowly walked away from the bus and sat down at the bus stop, her head hanging low as the bus drove off.
Mr. Thompson finished driving his bus and went back home to have lunch. He said hello to his wife, Mrs. Thompson, and then he sat down on the couch to relax. While he was looking at his phone, he saw a picture of the little girl he had seen earlier. The picture said she was “Missing,” and her family was looking for her everywhere. This made Mr. Thompson feel very shocked and worried.
“Oh no, what did I do ” Mr. Thompson thought to himself as he quickly stood up and ran to the door. Mrs. Thompson was surprised by his sudden action. Mr. Thompson told her seriously, “Sweetheart, quickly call 911 and this number on the post.” He showed her the picture of the girl. “I saw her at the bus stop before, but I didn’t let her on the bus because she didn’t have enough money. I need to go and find her, so please make those calls.” After quickly telling her where the bus stop was, he rushed out of the house.
Mr. Thompson hurried to his car, his heart beating fast as he drove quickly to the bus stop, hoping the girl was still there. He felt bad for not being more careful and for not understanding how much she needed help. As he drove, he decided to be kinder and more thoughtful in the future, especially to those who need protection. Dear Annie,
I’ve conducted a survey among my classmates to gather insights on the challenges that we face in English learning. The results indicate that the most common difficulties are related to vocabulary retention and comprehension of native English speakers’ accents. Additionally, some students struggle with grammar rules and the application of them in real-world conversations.
Given our collective interest in improving these areas, I would greatly appreciate your guidance and assistance. Your expertise in English teaching would be invaluable in helping us overcome these obstacles. Thank you for considering our needs.
Yours, sincerely
Li Hua
