Sometimes, good advice takes time to sink in. When I first read Thoreau’s Walden, I was attracted by his call to simplify our lives. Nevertheless, I ignored his advice for forty years and enjoyed my life with possessions. But one morning, an incident occurred that illustrated the wisdom of Thoreau’s advice and changed my life.
It was January 13, a bright Sunday morning at my home in Minnesota. My challenge was to remove twelve inches of snow from my driveway before my favorite soccer game began. Whenever I tried to blow the snow out of my driveway, my snowblower ran just seconds before it stopped. So I had to wheel the machine back into the garage to check and repair. Meanwhile, my neighbor smiled and waved as he finished clearing the snow using his snowblower.
I abandoned the snowblower and seized a shovel, clearing a path through the driveway wide enough in fifteen minutes. After watching the game, I took apart the snowblower and dropped the pieces into a large trash can, feeling a rush of freedom. Now, no more trips to the gas station, and no more oil changes or breakdowns.
I shared my insight with my wife Carolyn, who was supportive. Whenever it snowed heavily, we skipped working out at the gym and shoveled the driveway together. The task never took more than thirty minutes and was followed by a celebratory cup of hot chocolate. A new winter tradition was born.
Following Thoreau’s advice to simplify life, I made a system for sorting through my possessions to decide what to keep, sell, donate, or desert and encouraged Carolyn to join me in my effort. By the time we retired, we moved to a retirement community with a small rental truck, saving thousands of dollars.
In retirement, we continue to enjoy the benefits of owning no more than we need. The less we own, the less we have to take care of, and the more time we have to pursue activities that bring us joy: biking, hiking, reading, and travelling. We are glad we took Thoreau’s advice.
4 How did the author react to Thoreau’s advice at first
A. He ignored it and kept his habits. B. He advocated the lifestyle to his friends.
C. He abandoned his private possessions. D. He made improvements according to it.
5. What did the author plan to do after clearing the snow
A. Drive to the local gym for sports. B. Read Thoreau’s book for advice.
C. Enjoy his favorite sports program. D. Take the snowblower to the gas station.
6. What was the author’s new family tradition
A. Sorting through the possessions to make donations.
B. Celebrating their physical work with hot chocolate.
C. Doing the repairs of their possessions by themselves.
D. Getting people in the neighborhood to clear the snow.
7. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Good advice takes little time to be absorbed.
B. Simplicity makes room for more joy in life.
C. Owning more than enough brings us benefits.
D. Exchanging our possessions boosts happiness.
C
The pollutants in the sky cause ugly stains on buildings. To beat this, chemists have been working for years on a paint that can clean itself and remove pollutants from the air.
This technology uses nanoparticles (纳米颗粒) that start chemical reactions. When an artificial UV (紫外线) light source shines on the paint, the nanoparticles react with pollutants to break them down, removing them from nearby panies already offer these photocatalytic (光催化的) paints, but some chemists remain cautious about the products’ effectiveness and sustainability.
For a recent study, researchers created a new photocatalytic paint using UV rays from ordinary sunlight, making its self-cleaning properties easier to activate. They’ve also shown they can effectively produce this paint from recycled materials from industry and also using fallen leaves, which are organic waste.
UV light excites the electrons in the nanoparticles, which interact with water in the air to produce highly reactive chemicals which attack pollutants coming in contact with the paint, changing them into less harmful substances such as water. The research team added nitrogen, carbon and other elements to the nanoparticles’ structure, which reduced the amount of energy needed to perform the reaction and let it work via ordinary sunlight. In laboratory tests, these improved nanoparticles removed up to 96% of tested pollutants added to the paint’s surface.
“It is better to be able to use solar light to activate, as the paint can work by itself,” says Antonio, a chemist in Spain. But a real-world setting would probably reduce its effectiveness, he adds. “Under laboratory conditions, it is a small scale, and everything is controlled, such as temperature, humidity, or the concentration of pollutants, but you’ll never get those results at a real scale.”
The study authors stress that this work is just an initial step in their research. Future research will confirm how effectively pollutants are removed. “We don’t claim that we can remove all pollutants from the air,” Antonio says, “but it looks promising.”
8. What makes some chemists doubtful about the photocatalytic paints
A. How the UV light can be produced. B. When the chemical reactions set off.
C. Whether the products are sustainable. D. What they can do to remove the dirt.
9 What’s the purpose of adding nitrogen into the nanoparticles
A. To reduce the energy needed for the reaction.
B. To make them less harmful to the environment.
C. To get more pollutants in contact with the paint.
D. To test solar light as a motivator on a large scale.
10. How does Antonio evaluate the research
A. It’s a big step to clean stains on buildings.
B. It should be performed in various conditions.
C. It offers a way to remove outdoor pollutants.
D. It should focus on the recycling of the paints.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. New paint has been proved green. B. Green paint makes walls beautiful.
C. Sun-activated paint cleans walls. D. Ways are found to improve air quality.
D
It’s hard to imagine life without a smartphone these days. Leave yours at home and you may find yourself lost, moneyless and severed from social contact. Nine in ten American adults own one, according to Pew Research Centre. They spend 3 hours and 45 minutes on them a day, on average, assumes GWI, a firm of analysts. New versions with artificial intelligence may be even harder to put down.
Yet a market is also emerging for phones that are deliberately pea-brained. These dumb phones — confusingly called “feature phones” — account for just 2% of phone sales in America. But the demand is growing. In 2016 HMD, a Finnish firm, bought the rights to relaunch the devices of Nokia, whose basic phones once were dominant. It says it is now selling “tens of thousands” of flip-phones a month in America. In May, it re-released the Nokia 3210, a mainstay of many millennials’ teenage years, in Europe. It even has Snake, a classic mobile game.
What explains the return of the dumb phone One factor is anxiety over the impact of smartphones and social-media apps on young people’ s mental health. That is why Eton, a British school, announced in July that it would ban its students from bringing smartphones to school, and would provide them with Nokia phones instead.
Plenty of grown-ups are choosing dumb phones out of their own free will after growing alarmed at their growing screen-time on social-media sites. Some smartphone addicts are instead choosing to dumb down their devices, either by deleting apps or downloading ones that control screen time, of which there are a growing number.
Disconnecting the supercharged smartphone can lead to the feeling of jittering at first. For example, Christina Dinur, who switched to using the dumb phone, remembers wondering what to do with herself when waiting in a queue without her smartphone. But she settled into it really quickly. For some, it seems that a dumb phone can be a smart choice.
12. What’s the emerging market described in paragraph 2
A. Demands rise for new feature phones with more functions.
B. Buyers are addicted to old phone brands with new services.
C. People begin to like dumb phones with traditional functions.
D. Teenagers are banned from taking smartphones to school.
13. Why are many adults abandoning smartphones
A. They become aware of their increasing screen time.
B. Their social contacts have dangerously weakened.
C. Smartphones can’t satisfy their growing social needs.
D. Smartphones pose a threat to their own choice of apps.
14. What does the underlined word “jittering” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Excitement. B. Confusion. C. Productivity. D. Connection.
15. Which part of a newspaper does the text most likely come from
A. Science. B. Health. C. Education. D. Lifestyle.

By nature, I’m a shy person. I don’t like to be front and center. I am uncomfortable in unfamiliar situations, and I dislike being the “new kid” in a group of people. My retired husband and I had moved to California to be near our daughter and her family. After everything was settled, I felt restless and somewhat lonely. When I told my elderly neighbor that I still didn’t know anyone, she said, “Nobody is going to come knocking on your door. Get out there and look for them.”
One afternoon, I noticed a small ad in our local newspaper asking for Support Volunteers to help out at the fire department. Maybe I could do some filing or other office work. I called and was told they were starting a class to train new volunteers. When I realized that everyone was going to be new at the same time, I smiled. I was interviewed, and passed.
I was nervous on the first day. But as soon as I met the other new volunteers, I discovered this particular group was made up of retired people with interests similar to my own. They wanted to be active and wanted to be of service to the community. The Support Volunteers came from many different walks of life. Together, we made up an efficient, knowledgeable, and capable team.
When the training was completed, we were issued fire-department dress uniforms. Each of us was on duty for twenty-four hours, one day a week, with a partner. While on duty, we transferred mail and equipment to and from the city’s seven fire stations, and fire/police headquarters. We also taught businesses and the public how to use fire extinguishers (灭火器) , and handed out fire-prevention information at community events. I became well qualified for my service.
Although I initially joined the volunteers to meet people, I continued my satisfying work with the Support Volunteers because of something that happened a few years ago.
In that particular summer night, in the place I lived, a large wildfire was burning, causing a threat to people in the city. The department where I volunteered had been asked to gather up everyone to the shelter center in case the fire lost control.

【47题答案】
【答案】Upon receiving the order, we sprang into action. Divided into several groups, we were sent to different neighborhoods of the city. Just as I was looking into the neighborhood, an elderly man in his wheelchair caught my attention. From the confusion on his face, I could tell that he didn’t know what was actually happening, and where everyone else had gone to. Hurrying up to him, I explained what was happening and what everyone was asked to do. He gladly allowed me to wheel him to the shelter center.
Wheeling the elderly man to the center, I knew we had to put up there. Before long, we volunteers went about our duties, taking out the food we’d prepared and presenting it to everyone present. Meanwhile, we cooked delicious supper for them. Seeing the contented expression on their faces, I felt wonderful that I could do something for everyone. The fire could be controlled, and everything would return to normal. Nothing could be better than the feeling that I was helping to make a difference in the life of other people.
