Jan Tchamani, an English teacher in Birmingham, UK, suddenly developed a serious illness and had to quit
her job. At age 50, she found herself out of work and stuck (被困住) at home with only her computer to keep her
company. After a while, she discovered that surfing the Internet could help her feel less lonely and bored. She
could listen to music, watch films, play games, and explore the world. She also joined an online group where she
could talk about her problems and get support and advice from others. She realised that one of the greatest benefits
of the Internet was its ability to remove the distance that usually exists between people.
She was so inspired by the people she met online that she decided to start an IT club to teach older people how
to use computers and the Internet. She and her friends now organise events and collect money to pay for private
teachers. Many people have been helped by the club. A 59-year-old man learnt how to apply for work online and
found a great job. Now that he works and can take care of himself, his daughter has time to study at university. A

Many sugar—sweetened beverages(饮料)have little to offer—no nutritional value and lots of calories, and
their harmful health effects have been well—documented. Now, a study links drinking too many sugary
beverages—and even 100% natural fruit juices—to an increased risk of early death. Specifically, drinking too much
fruit juice could lead to an increased risk of early death ranging from 9% to 42%, according to a study.
第 8页/共 14页
Overall, the sugars found in orange juice, although naturally occurring, are pretty similar to the sugars added
to soda and other sweetened beverages, the study suggests. “Sugary beverages, whether soft drinks or fruit juices,
should be limited,” Jean Welsh, a co—author of the study said.
Seven US cities, including New York and most recently Philadelphia, have levied(征收)taxes on sweetened
drinks with added sugar in an effort to reduce consumption. The new study defined “sugary beverages” as both
sugar—sweetened drinks, like soda and fruit—flavored drinks, and 100% natural fruit juices that have no added
sugar. So how does fruit juice compare to soda “Previous research has shown that high consumption of sugars like
those in soft drinks and fruit juices is linked to several cardiovascular(心 血 管 的 )disease risk factors,” Welsh
explained.
People who consumed 10% or more of their daily calories as sugary beverages had a 44% greater risk of dying
due to a heart disease and a 14% greater risk of an early death from any cause compared with people who
consumed less than 5% of their daily calories as sugary beverages, the study showed. Each additional 12—ounce(
盎 司 )serving of fruit juice per day was associated with a 24% higher risk of death from any cause, and each
additional 12—ounce serving of sugary beverages per day was associated with an 11% higher risk.
This is one of the first studies to examine the relationship between sugary drinks, including 100% fruit juices,
and early death, wrote Marta Guasch—Fere and Dr. Frank B. Hu in an editorial published alongside the new study.
“Although fruit juices may not be as harmful as sugar—sweetened beverages, their consumption should be
moderated in children and adults, especially for individuals who wish to control their body weight,” Guasch—Fere
and Hu wrote.
Welsh said we need to consider both fruit juices and sugar—sweetened beverages when we think about how
much sugar we consume each day. Between the two, she was in favor of fruit juices: “Given its vitamin and
mineral content, fruit juice in small amounts may have a beneficial effect that isn’t seen with sodas and other
sugar—sweetened beverages.”
46. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Sugar—free drinks basically have no nutritional value.
B. Natural fruit juices are usually healthier than sugary beverages.
C. The negative effect of drinking too many beverages remains unknown.
D. Drinking too much fruit juice may not be a healthy option.
47. Why have seven US cities taxed sugary beverages
A. To increase the government’s income.
第 9页/共 14页
B. To let people buy less sweetened beverages.
C To urge people to turn to sugar—free drinks.
D. To increase the consumption of natural juice.
48. How are the findings of the study presented to us
A. By making comparisons. B. By giving examples.
C. By giving advice. D. By stating the facts.
49. What does the underlined word “moderated” most probably mean
A. Avoided. B. Increased. C. Reduced D. Encouraged
50. From Jean Welsh’s words, we know that ______.
A. sugar is a major cause of cardiovascular disease
B. the sugar in juice is different from the sugar in sweetened beverages
C. fruit juices are only recommended when consumed in small amounts
D. the amount of sugar we consume mainly lies in drinks with added sugar

If I could give today’s young people three wishes, they would be: More hugs. More time outside in nature.
More belief in their own power to change the world. While most people understand the importance of the first two
wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.
Let’s start with the idea that all of us-especially young people-need heroes. We need them to be our guides on
the difficult trail (足迹) we call life and to show us just how far we can go. And we need heroes today more than
ever. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity (名人) and a hero. And the
difference is vital. A celebrity is all about fame (名望)-temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are
easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character-qualities under the surface that
aren’t visible until they take action.
Heroes are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others,
teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so
many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.
Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden message they
get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy-which shoes, which cell phone-not who they are
down inside. What gets lost in this Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities-their own
第 10页/共 14页
power to make a positive difference in the world. Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in
every young person. Each of them, from whatever background, is a positive force who can do something. All it
takes for that to be true is belief.
How do we help young people believe in their own power The best way is simply to share examples, of other
young people who have made a difference.
Ryan, age 11, has worked tirelessly to raise money to provide clean drinking water to African villages. When
he first heard about the plight (困苦) of African children who died from impure water, Ryan was only six years old.
In the next five years, he raised over $500, 000-enough to build over 70 water wells.
Barbara, age 17, grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring their used
motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organized the creation of a recycling center for crude (未加提炼的) oil.
Her project has grown to include 18 recycling centers in Texas.
The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can
build on their own energy to do something great.
51. What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2
A. To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.
B. To discuss the differences between celebrities and heroes.
C. To provide definitions of the words “celebrity” and “hero”.
D. To explain the details about being celebrities and heroes.
52. What is the meaning of the word “superficial” in Paragraph 2
A. Not known.
B. Unexpected.
C. Undeveloped.
D. Without depth.
53. What could be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. Heroes make the world go round.
B. Heroes must believe in themselves.
C. Heroes focus on social welfare programs.
D. Heroes promote cooperation between people.
54. How does the author advance his view that young people have the potential to be a hero
A. By defining the qualities that make a young person a hero.
第 11页/共 14页
B. By contrasting the achievements made by different young people.
C. By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.
D. By providing examples of qualities that have made young people famous.
55. What is the main idea of the passage
A. More heroes are needed in the world.
B. Celebrities are reported too much in the media.
C. Adults should become role models for young people.
D. Young people should believe in their ability to make a difference.

A man from New Jersey was at risk of losing his home and had no one to help him until his neighbors found
out and came together to raise $50, 000 to save his house. Lamar Harris has special needs and “his life has been full
of tragedy,” his neighbor, Terri Fretz, wrote on GoFundMe.
Fretz said Harris lost both his mom and grandmother as a child and lived with his father and brother until they
both suddenly died when he was an adult. Harris is alone.
“He cannot drive. He does not understand finances and has a very limited reading ability.” Fretz wrote. “As a
result of the death of his family members, his limited reading ability and his inability to understand finances, he
hasn’t paid his property taxes in time.”
Harris hasn’t paid property taxes since his father’s death in 2015 and the town would take back his house for
back taxes. “Harris is in danger of losing his home,” Fretz’s post reads.
With his family members gone, Harris seemingly had no one to help him. Luckily, he has a loving community
and church who decided to rally around him and raise the money needed to stop the foreclosure (赎回权取消) of
his home, Fretz said.
Fretz created a GoFundMe on July 23, with a deadline to raise the money by August 5. While the town was
working to help Mr Harris keep his property, about 1,007 people were donating to the GoFundMe. In just 13 days,
they raised $64,804. Some donors gave up to $300.
第 12页/共 14页
One woman said she and her children sold apple juice to raise money for Harris. “We are Lamar’s neighbors
and care about him very much,” she wrote. “He helps everyone in our community willingly from his heart.
Everyone knows him and loves him. He deserves to stay in his home.” “I love you, man, and if you need anything,
call me,” another man wrote to Harris.
Fretz updated the GoFundMe page to thank everyone. “You are all proof that kindness can make a difference
in a person’s life in a big way,” she wrote.

Regular exercise is part of a healthy life. It’s my honor to recommend long-distance running to you, which has
a lot of benefits.
Running will help you get fit and prevent diseases. Like any exercise it increases the flow of blood and
oxygen to your brain. At the same time, it’s good for your eyes after a whole day of study. It also strengthens your
immune system and reduces the risk of health problems. What’s more, if you feel down, going for a run can cheer
yourself up.
If you’re new to running, here are some tips for you — a pair of good running shoes is necessary. It’s
important to warm up and cool down properly before and after running.
