Yu Zeling,an award-winning master of paper cutting, fills her studio with cutouts of animals, people, and scenes that are so vivid that they seem to leap from the walls. Her art covers village life in Ansai,a rural district in Shaanxi Province.
Ms.Yu came to paper cutting in the late 1970s as naturally as she breathed the earthy air.“We were very poor, and when it was time to celebrate the New Year,we all put paper-cuts on the windows to decorate our houses,” she says, recalling the holiday at her childhood home.Ms.Yu and others are working to keep the folk art alive, even as it evolves away from its roots as adornment for farmhouses.
The art originated in China in the centuries after paper was invented in 105 CE.Full of auspicious (吉利的) symbols from daily life, the decorations represented good weather, many offspring, long life, wealth, and happiness.
Using newspapers,Ms.Yu first practiced cutting the image of a Chinese national flag that she saw in a school textbook. She cut it 100 times before she was satisfied. Then her aunt took over, introducing her to increasingly complicated traditional themes.
Ms.Yu was later invited to train in the Ansai’s Cultural Center. After years of training,Ms.Yu became a master in her own right, winning one award after another. Her works are on display in museums. But she’s humble about her achievements.“I was,and still am,a farmer,” she says with a smile.
Hoping to carry on and grow the folk art,Ms.Yu volunteers to teach at free community training sessions.Paper cutting is also taught in Ansai’s public schools.Ms.Yu is aware of the need to go beyond protecting traditions and embrace new paper-cut experiments.

Researchers have discovered over 300 new ancient drawings in the Nazca Desert in Peru using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drones (无人机).The pictures were made by the Nazca people who lived in the area over 2,000 years ago.
The Nazca Lines are a famous group of huge ancient drawings in the desert in southern Peru. These geoglyphs (地画) include many different kinds of designs, from simple shapes to pictures of animals and plants, usually drawn with a single long, winding line. Many of these lines are extremely long and can only be fully seen from the air.
Since their discovery in 1927,scientists have found around 430 geoglyphs. Now,using AI and drones, researchers have found 303 new geoglyphs in just six months. Most of the new geoglyphs are smaller than the previously discovered ones and are roughly 30 feet (9 meters) in length. Many of the new geoglyphs seem to show humans as well as animals, including some unusual scenes.
To find these new geoglyphs, scientists trained a special AI program to analyze satellite images for likely geoglyphs. After spending over 2,600 hours looking at places suggested by the AI,they took lots of pictures with drones and also worked on the ground in Peru to confirm the locations.Despite the many mistakes made by AI,the new method significantly sped up the discovery process compared to traditional methods.
Johny Isla, who is in charge of studying the Nazca Lines for Peru, noted that what used to take three or four years can now be done in two or three days.Researchers are still trying to figure out what the geoglyphs mean.Masato Sakai, who led the research, says the new discoveries are helping scientists learn more.
One significant finding is a system of paths in the Nazca Desert not far from groups of the smaller geoglyphs. The researchers believe these paths were made by the Nazca people walking through the desert, suggesting that the smaller geoglyphs were meant to be seen by travelers. The way these smaller geoglyphs are grouped together may be key to understanding them.

B.The cultural practices of the Nazca people.
C.The historical significance of the Nazca Lines.
D.The accuracy of AI in analyzing satellite images.
7.What does Johny Isla think of the new method using AI and drones
A.Unnecessary.
B.Efficient.
C.Wasteful.
D.Flexible.
8.What could be a suitable title for this text

In Mexico City’s Polanco neighborhood,Catia Lattouf has turned her apartment into a clinic for sick, injured,or baby hummingbirds.Over the past decade, though lacking formal training, she has nursed hundreds of these tiny birds back to health.

Lattouf never turns away a bird.Together with her partner Cecilia Santos, they care for the birds in long days that stretch from 5 a.m.into the night. Most of the hummingbirds are in the bedroom where Lattouf sleeps until they are strong enough to fly and feed themselves. Then she moves them to a neighboring room to prepare them for release in a wooded area on the city’s south side.
Many of them do manage to return to the wild, but the ones who die under Lattouf’s care are buried near her building between small plants.Despite threats to hummingbirds from constant construction projects that replace flower gardens with concrete,Lattouf remains optimistic and hopes other bird lovers will plant more flowers to feed these great pollinators (传粉者).

It’s summer. You’re on your favourite beach towel,a friend beside you. You’re both absorbed in books, occasionally taking sips of water. But what happens when it’s time to head home Will you carry on reading together later Generally speaking, reading tends to be seen as a solitary (孤独的) pastime. 13 However, the benefits of sharing the experience are numerous and worth sticking with throughout the year.
14 For example, you don’t have to brainstorm to organize a conversation, because you both have a book in your hands. You can get lost in your book without worrying about seeming rude by not keeping up a constant stream of chatter. As you both enter the same state, your blood pressure will go down, muscle tension will ease, and your worries will fade away. All these put you at ease. 15 A quiet corner of the playground,a blanket spread out on the grass in the garden,or any calm space where you feel relaxed will do.

Reading fiction has been shown to enhance empathy (同理心),which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. As you know, novels allow us to live countless experiences through their characters, which will result in heightened sensitivity. 17 For example,a person’s empathetic response increases as he emerges from being immersed in a story.
