The writer Margaret Mitchell is best known for writing Gone with the Wind, first published in 1936. Her book and the movie based on it, tell a story of love and survival during the American Civil War. Visitors to the Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta, Georgia, can go where she lived when she started composing the story and learn more about her life.
Our first stop at the Margaret Mitchell House is an exhibit area telling about the writer’s life. She was born in Atlanta in 1900. She started writing stories when she was a child. She started working as a reporter for the Atlanta Journal newspaper in 1922. One photograph of Ms. Mitchell, called Peggy, shows her talking to a group of young college boys. She was only about one and a half meters tall. The young men tower over her, but she seems very happy and sure of herself. The tour guide explains: “Now in this picture Peggy is interviewing some boys from Georgia Tech, asking them such questions as ‘Would you really marry a woman who works ’ And today it’d be ‘Would you marry one who doesn’t ’ “
The Margaret Mitchell House is a building that once contained several apartments. Now we enter the first floor apartment where Ms. Mitchell lived with her husband, John Marsh. They made fun of the small apartment by calling it “The Dump”.
Around 1926, Margaret Mitchell had stopped working as a reporter and was at home healing after an injury. Her husband brought her books to read from the library. She read so many books that he bought her a typewriter and said it was time for her to write her own book. Our guide says Gone with the Wind became a huge success. New technological tools are enabling a global community of biologists and amateur scientists to explore the natural world of sound in richer detail and at greater range than ever before. Just as microscopes helped humans observe things not visible to the naked eye, widely used microphones and machine learning models allow us to listen to sounds we cannot otherwise hear.
Billions of dollars are pouring into so-called generative artificial intelligence, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, with scores of new companies being launched to commercialize these foundation models. But in one sense, these models are mostly used to rearrange existing human knowledge in new combinations rather than to generate anything really new. What may have a bigger scientific impact is “additive AI”, using machine learning to explore specific, newly created data sets and extend the frontiers of human knowledge. When it comes to sonic (声音的) data, there is an incredible potential for cross-species communication through the use of machines that can translate and copy animal sounds exactly, effectively creating a “Google Translate for the zoo”.
This sonic revolution has been promoted by advances in both hardware and software. Cheap, durable, long-lasting microphones and sensors can be attached to trees in the Amazon, rocks in the Arctic or to dolphins’ backs, enabling real-time monitoring. That stream of sonic data is then processed by “additive AI”. However, this data only makes sense when combined with human observations about natural behaviors gained from painstaking fieldwork by biologists or crowdsourced analysis from amateurs.
Scientists have discovered fascinating information about the sonic universe, which has already led to practical and commercial outcomes. For example, cryptographers (密码专家) have been studying the buzzes, clicks, creaks and squeaks of whales to understand whether their “bionic Morse code” could be copied to encrypt (加密) communications. However, this is just the beginning of our exploration of sound, and there is no telling what other discoveries await us.
8. Why does the author mention microscopes in paragraph 1
A. To highlight the popularity of microscopes.
B. To illustrate the role of sound exploration tools.
C. To show the development of scientific instruments.
D. To stress the importance of observing beyond senses.
9. How may “additive AI” assist in sound exploration
A. It may make sense of natural behaviors independently.
B. It may guarantee the real-time monitoring of sonic data.
C. It may help create translation equipment for animal sounds.
D. It may help spread the existing human knowledge of sound.
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards sound exploration
A. Optimistic. B. Reserved. C. Critical. D. Indifferent
11. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Sonic Revolution: Discovering New Sounds
B. Sonic Translation: Inter-species Communication
C. Additive AI: Extending the Frontiers of Knowledge
D. Sonic Exploration with AI: Listening to the Unheard
D
According to an idea called the “inflationary (暴胀的) multiverse”, the universe has been constantly expanding, which would have created a countless number of other universes. Collectively, these cosmic islands form what scientists call a “multiverse”. However, other universes may lie beyond our scientific reach, physically and philosophically. Consequently, the methodologies by which physicists might validate (验证) the multiverse and whether such validation is even possible remain unresolved inquiries.
In science, hypotheses (假说) are used to propose explanations, but from hypotheses to theories, validation of predictions is essential to see whether initial assumptions are supported or disproved. Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli says, “It is hard to write theories that survive the proof of reality. Few survive thanks to a basic idea: Do not trust your fancies. Keep only the ideas that can be tested.” Rovelli adds, “Today many physicists are wasting time trying to guess and jumping to conclusions. This approach has never worked previously, and it is not working now.” The multiverse might be one of those wild guesses.
Now, physicists are debating whether that problem moves the multiverse from physics to metaphysics, from the world of science to that of philosophy. Philosopher Richard Dawid believes scientists could support the multiverse hypotheses without actually finding physical support. “If we have a theory that seems to work, and have come up with nothing that works better, chances are our idea is right,” he says. Not everyone is so cheerful, though. Sabine Hossenfelder, another theoretical physicist, thinks “Without making contact with observation, a theory isn’t part of the natural sciences, and not physics.”
Some supporters of the multiverse claim they have found physical evidence. Andrei Linde insists “Our universe seems fine-tuned (精调的) to be favourable to life, with a four-dimensional space in which we can live. It is certain that in an eternally inflating multiverse, one of the universes should turn out like ours. Each universe can have different physical laws and fundamentals. Given limitless changes, a universe on which humans can be born will be born. The multiverse actually explains why we’re here. And our existence, therefore, helps explain why the multiverse is plausible.”
Just as Einstein’s theory of general relativity could only be confirmed recently with a billion-dollar instrument called LIGO, scientists may eventually discover more direct evidence of the multiverse. So far, all of science has relied on testability, but those tests take time, and most theoreticians want to wait it out. They are not ready to shelve an idea like the multiverse — which could actually be the answer to life, the universe and everything — until and unless they can prove to themselves it doesn’t exist. And that day may never come.
12. What can we learn from the passage
A. The multiverse is recognized as a theory.
B. The multiverse starts debates on human existence.
C. Rovelli criticizes physicists for their baseless fancies.
D. Dawid emphasizes the necessity of physical evidence.
13. What does the underlined word “plausible” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Credible. B. Complex. C. Essential. D. Fascinating.
14. As for the existence of multiverse, the author is _________.
A. negative B. neutral C. certain D. positive
15. Which would be the best title for this passage
A. Mysteries of Multiverse: Fine-Tuned for Life
B. Can Physicists Ever Prove the Multiverse Is Real
C. The Inflationary Multiverse: Proven Beyond Doubt
D. Have Physicists Lost Their Minds in the Multiverse

Don’t Let Personality Types Define You
Personality tests, especially the Myers-Briggs type indicator(MBT), are popular tools that many people use to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. MBTI sorts people into 16 different personality types based on four key categories. Although these tests can provide useful insights, it’s important not to let them define or limit you.
___16___ . But people are complex. Our personalities can change over time, depending on experiences and growth. What the MBTI test reveals is just a snapshot of one’s preferences, not a complete definition of who you are. For example, if the test labels you as an “introvert” (性格内向的人), you may feel tempted to avoid social communication because you think it’s not in your nature to be outgoing. But you might find that your ability to enjoy social events increases over time. The key is not to accept the label as an unchangeable fact. ___17___
Similarly, if you are categorized as a “thinking” type, it might lead you to believe that you are always rational ___18___ Emotional response is also an essential part of human nature, and embracing them can enhance your decision-making process and relationships.
Additionally, many people get caught up in the idea that their “type” limits their careers or personal choices. They might think, for instance, that an “introvert” would not be a good leader. ___19___ . Many introverts achieve success through careful listening and thoughtful decision-making. Don’t let de MBTI label stop you from pursuing opportunities that feel right for you.
Finally, one of the most important lessons we can learn from the MBTI is that we are not defined by one test or label. ___20___ . By focusing on our strengths and embracing the full complexity of our personalities, we can lead richer and more fulfilling lives. We are all more than the labels we receive.
A. The reality is quite different.
B. The test results should be seen as a guide, not a limitation.
C. The MBTI system provides a simple way to categorize individuals based on their preferences.
D. But there are countless examples of introverts excelling in these types of roles.
E. You should see it as a starting point for self-reflection and growth.
F. However, it’s essential to understand that both parts of the personality are valuable.
G. The MBTI system can sometimes prevent individuals from realizing their full potential.

As they walked along the winding trail, the view was amazing. Green trees surrounded them on all sides, and the cheerful singing of birds filled the air. They talked and laughed, fully enjoying the beauty of nature.
However, as they got deeper into the mountains, the trail became less clear. Alex took out the map and studied it, only to find that they had somehow left the marked path. Max started to look anxious. “Alex, I’m really worried we can’t find our way back. This doesn’t seem right,” he said. Alex tried to stay calm. “Don’t worry, Max. We just need to go back a little and find the main trail again.” But when they turned around, they realized it was hard to remember exactly which way they had come.
Suddenly, they heard a loud growl from nearby. Their hearts jumped. Alex whispered, “Don’t move, Max. It might be a wild animal.” They stood there, scared stiff, not knowing what was going to come out of the bushes.

第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】
Slowly, a large bear emerged from the bushes. Its eyes were fixed on them, and it let out another threatening growl. Alex knew they couldn’t run. Remembering what he’d read about bear encounters, he told Max in a low voice, “Don’t make any sudden moves. Just stand tall and make yourself look big.” They opened their jackets wide and spread their arms. The bear took a few steps closer, sniffing the air. Alex’s heart was pounding, but he tried to stay calm. He hoped their actions would prevent the bear from attacking.
After what felt like an eternity, the bear finally lost interest and wandered away. Alex and Max let out a huge sigh of relief. Their legs were shaking, but they knew they had to get out of there quickly. Alex grabbed the map again and this time, with more caution, they managed to find the main trail. They followed it closely, not stopping until they were safely out of the mountains. That day, they learned the importance of being prepared and following the right path during an adventure.
