FIRST AID FOR BURNS
The skin is an important part of your body. Your skin protects you against diseases and the sun’s rays. It also helps control your body temperature and gives you your sense of touch. As you can imagine, getting burnt can lead to very serious wounds. The first and most important step in the treatment of burns is giving first aid.
CAUSES OF BURNS
You can get burnt by many things: hot water, fire, the sun, electricity (电)…
________ OF BURNS
Burns are classified depending on how deep the skin wound is.
First-degree burns These hurt only the surface of the skin. These burns are not serious. Examples include light sunburn and burns caused by small housework accidents.
Second-degree burns These go below the surface of the skin. They are serious and take a few weeks to get better. Examples include burns caused by hot water.
· Third-degree burns These hurt every layer (层) of the skin. These burns cause serious deep wounds. Examples include burns caused by burning cloths or oil fires.
FIRST-AID TREATMENT
1. Keep burns under cool running water, especially within the first ten minutes. The cool water stops the burning process (过程) and reduces the pain.
2. Dry the burnt area gently with a clean towel.
3. Take off any clothes using scissors if necessary, unless you see the material sticking to the burnt skin.
4. Cover the burnt area with a clean cloth. Adding toothpaste (牙膏) to the wounds is a bad idea, as it will keep the heat in the wounds and make them worse.
5. If the victim is troubled by second or third-degree burns, there is a strong need to take him to the hospital at once.
28.Which word can be put in ________
A.Types B.Examples C.Cases D.Numbers
29.Which picture shows the correct way to treat burns
A. B. C. D.

My heart was beating so loudly that I was sure everyone could hear it over the noise of the boat motor. I jumped into the water and stood on my skis (滑水板). Slowly the boat moved forward, tightening (拉紧) up the ski rope. I held on for dear life to the handle on the end of the rope while Mum looked at me from the back of the boat with a smile that seemed to say, “I believe in you.”
I was trying very hard to find my earlier feelings of excitement about learning to waterski. “Whose bright idea was this anyway ” I asked myself nervously. In my bright orange life jacket, I sat in the cool water moving up and down gently. I tried to keep the tips of my water skis pointing up out of the water as I had been shown. A wave of fear washed over me. There were just too many instructions to remember.
My little sister Nikki cheered as she jumped up and down in the back of the boat next to Mum. Nikki had learnt to waterski at a very young age. I, on the other hand, always liked underwater sports such as diving. Moving on top of the water was going to be very different for me. But once I mastered (掌握) this, we would have another activity that the whole family could enjoy together.
“Deep breath!” I reminded myself. Dad sped up the boat. “Here we go!” I thought wildly. Mum gave me a big thumbs-up, and the boat rushed forward and gave a strong pull. I pushed up on my legs as hard as I could and let out a scream. I was in fact standing on my skis, skimming across the water, but not for long.
I fell forward and landed face down in the water. Thank goodness, I remembered to let go of the rope. My skis came off, and my life jacket kept me floating on the surface of the lake. “I don’t believe it,” I thought, turning over to my back with a big smile. “I almost felt like I was flying with wings.”
“Let’s do it again.” I called to Dad as he circled the boat around to pick me up.
The second time, the boat sped up again. Suddenly, I was flying. The world turned to be silent, broken only by Nikki’s shouts from the boat, “You did it!”
Now the lake didn’t scare me anymore. It felt like home.
31.“I” asked the underlined question in paragraph 2 because ________.
A.waterskiing was a quite dangerous sport
B.my memory of correct instructions was lost
C.the choice of waterskiing was completely wrong
D.my excitement about waterskiing was turned into fear
32.The keys to my success in mastering waterskiing are ________.
① Nikki’s cheers ② Mom’s encouragement ③ Dad’s patient instructions ④ My courage of keeping trying
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.②③④ D.①③④
33.Which can be the best title for the story
A.My Waterski Journey B.Let’s Do It Again C.Finding Wings on Water D.Family Fun on the Lake
The old English saying “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink” has been used since the 16th century to describe the difficulty of getting someone to act in their own best interests. But now, a new study suggests the use of this saying has been undervaluing horses for centuries.
Horses have the ability to think and plan ahead and are far cleverer than scientists thought before, according to a Nottingham Trent University study that analyzed the animal’s replies to a reward-based game. “Before, research has suggested that horses simply reply to stimuli (刺激) in the moment, and that they don’t voluntarily look ahead, think ahead and plan their actions—however, our study shows that they do have an awareness of the results and outcomes (结果) of their actions.” said the lead researcher, Louise Evans.
The three-stage game included 20 horses, who were rewarded with a treat just for touching a piece of card with their noses in the beginning. Then in the second stage, researchers started turning on a “stop light”. The horses were only given a snack if they touched the card while the stop light was off. At first, they took no notice of the light and carried on touching the card, paying no attention to whether or not the light was on. But then, in the third stage, researchers introduced a penalty for touching the card while the stop light was on - a 10-second break during which the horses could not play the game at all. The team found there was a sudden and huge reduction in mistakes by all the members. The horses started correctly touching the card only at the right time to get a treat. “That break was enough to quickly get the performance out of them that we wanted.” said Evans. “That was enough for the horses to go: ‘OK, let’s just play by the rules.’”
The study suggests that, rather than fail to catch the soul of the game, horses understood the rules in a short time. Evans hopes this pioneering study will help to improve welfare for horses. In training, you really don’t need to use anything too strict to get really good performance out of horses.

B.horses got a treat when they touched the card with the stop light on
C.all the horses improved quickly and made fewer mistakes in the third stage
D.researchers left horses out of the game for touching the card at the wrong time

There are different kinds of parents in the world. In the Netherlands (荷兰), some parents do a strange thing to their children. It’s called “dropping”. It means parents drive their children into a forest at night and drop them off so they have to find their way back home all by themselves.
Does this sound like a terrible idea Dutch parents have reasons for doing this. They think children should learn to work out problems on their own. In the forest, their children need to use GPS to find their way out. They need to deal with tiredness and hunger. They also need to know how to get help if they are lost.
Suja is an 11-year-old Dutch boy. When he finished his first “dropping”, he told The New York Times that he loved it. He said someday, when he has children, he wants them to do it as well. “It reminds you, even in very hard times, to keep walking, to keep going. I have never done that before.” he said. My Favorite Saying
My favorite saying is “Many hands make light work.” It tells us the importance of teamwork.
I like the saying because of one of my unforgettable experiences. Last Friday afternoon, our class decided to clean up our dormitory. The moment we heard the monitor’s announcement, we rushed to the dormitory. We were divided into four groups and began to work separately. When one group had finished their cleaning work, we would go to help another one. After our joint efforts, the dormitory was so clean that it took on a new look. Seeing our achievements, all of us felt very happy.
My experience has taught me that the more people we work with, the easier the job will be. So working in harmony makes a job easier.
