For over twenty years, fried chicken had been my absolute favorite food. I would have it at least three times a week, whether it was from a fast- food joint, a local diner, or even homemade. I planned my outings around places that served delicious fried chicken. There were times when I tried to cut back on it, especially when I started to gain some weight, but I always ended up giving in to my cravings within a few days.
This year, a series of events changed my relationship with fried chicken forever. I began experiencing frequent stomachaches and indigestion. Doctors couldn’t directly link these problems to fried chicken, but I noticed that every time I ate it, my discomfort worsened. Additionally, I started to realize that the once- mouthwatering smell and taste now left a heavy, greasy feeling in my mouth that I couldn’t ignore. One evening, after finishing a large bucket of fried chicken, I felt so sick that I couldn’t sleep well all night. That was the turning point. I decided that enough was enough, after two decades of indulgence.
Why was it so hard to let go before Is there really something addictive in fried chicken While there’s no official “fried chicken addiction” listed in medical books, experts point out factors that could contribute to its allure. Dr. Johnson from a nutrition research center mentions two main elements: the high-fat content and the combination of spices. The high-fat content triggers the release of endorphins in the brain, making us feel good, while the unique blend of spices stimulates our taste buds, making us want more.
Now, I’m on Day 35 of my “fried-chicken-free” journey. The first week was tough. I had strong cravings and even felt a bit down at times, almost like going through a mild withdrawal. But as the days passed, I started to feel better. My stomach problems became less frequent, and I even noticed that I had more energy. I’m really proud of myself for breaking this long-standing habit. If I can overcome my love for fried chicken, I believe I can overcome any other challenging habit in my life.
4.What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph
A.Fried chicken was only a casual part of the author’s diet.

C.The author had a deep and long-lasting love for fried chicken.
D.The author successfully reduced the intake of fried chicken several times.
5.What led the author to give up fried chicken
A.A doctor’s strict order.

C.A newfound dislike for the smell of chicken.
D.A friend’s advice on a healthier diet.
6.What does the underlined word “allure” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.harm B.cost C.waste D.attraction
7.How does the author feel about giving up fried chicken
A.Regretful B.Confused C.Satisfied D.Uncertain.
The Chinese New Year parade isn't the only place to watch a lion dance in the San Francisco Bay Area. At weddings, grand openings of new businesses and other celebrations, the traditional Chinese art is performed year-round, thanks to the contributions of lion dance groups and young people increasingly embracing the activity.
Connie Lu, a senior at Lincoln High School in San Francisco, has been practicing lion dance for three years in a youth lion dance club. She performed as the lion's head at a high school competition during the weekend in San Francisco's Chinatown to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
“I officially started performing in my freshman year, but I had been a ‘tail’ in a Chinese school for some years. I was only following the head’s steps,” Lu said. “I think being a head is more fun because you can play out the lion.”
Lu’s team — eleven girls and two boys — participated in the competition, along with four other teams of about 100 players. The event also attracted hundreds of tourists. Blinking big eyes and shaking the body, the yellow lion played by Lu and her teammates jumped up on a narrow bench to the beat of drums and gongs and picked up a hanging flower bouquet. The dancers’ skillful movements won a big round of applause from the audience.
Each performance has a unique meaning. Lu’s performance tells the story of a lion who tries to cross a river to get a flower for his friend, but he is afraid of the river at first. Finally, he conquers the challenge and gets the flower to his friend.
“The meaning is that everyone has struggles in life and it can be scary. But when we work together and work hard, we can achieve it,” said Sophia Lee, a teammate of Lu’s. “The practice of lion dancing serves as a way to celebrate our cultural heritage with audience abroad, giving them a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich Chinese traditions.”
8.What might be Lu’s favourite role in a lion dance
A.The head. B.The tail. C.The body. D.The leg.
9.How many teams joined in the competition in total
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
10.What can we learn about Lu in the competition
A.She was unfamiliar with a lion dance. B.Her role is still scary for her.
C.She gave up in the face of difficulty. D.Her performance tells a story of a brave lion.
11.What does Sophia Lee agree with about the lion dance
A.It focuses on individual spirit. B.It’s a chance to share Chinese culture.
C.It’s hardly accepted abroad. D.It doesn’t require a high level of skills.
I recently came across a post in which the author announces that he has listed the “objective” (客观的) differences between good art and bad art. I was very interested in seeing how this user could make a very subjective (主观的) topic “objective”.
What I saw made me laugh. The post says that good art “improves mood,” “boosts energy” and “clears the mind.” Bad art, on the other hand, “makes you feel uncomfortable,” “tricks the mind” and “is always arguing, sad, angry and a waste of time.”
However, this post misses the whole point of art completely. Art isn’t meant to make you feel comfortable. It isn’t meant to be watered down for any audience to enjoy. It isn’t meant to make heavy subjects lighter so that we can all stay calm and happy. It’s so much more than that.
I’m making a guess that most of what this post refers to as “good art” is classical art pieces. But much of classical art isn’t just sunshine and rainbows. One painting from a classically-trained painter, “Ivan the Terrible and his Son Ivan” by Ilya Repin, makes me feel horrible every time I see it. The look of absolute fear on the elder Ivan’s face doesn’t necessarily lift my energy.
Classical art such as this is fantastic beauty- wise, but it doesn’t necessarily make you feel better. But even uglier art — art that isn’t objectively beautiful and makes you uncomfortable — is still art.
A great example is the films of David Cronenberg. He’s one of my favorite artists of all time — not because his films uplift me. If anything, my enjoyment of his films comes from the fact that they make me feel so bad. What makes Cronenberg so amazing is that he makes the uncomfortable and the strange into masterpieces. I end up liking his films, even loving them, even though they often make me feel very bad.
Art, whether it takes the form of film, painting, sculpture or none of the above, is a personal expression of the artist. As all of us know, not every feeling we have is good. There is a place and a purpose for exploring both the dark and light sides of humanity.
If you don’t enjoy a piece of art, that’s fine! You don’t have to enjoy it just because it is called art by others. Art is, objectively, subjective.
Plenty of people will try to tell you what “good art” is. You don’t have to follow their guidelines, though. Make your own boxes Deciding what art is for yourself is the very beauty of creation.
12.What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 3 most probably mean
A.Be comforted. B.Be presented.
C.Be weakened. D.Be decorated.
13.The artist Ilya Repin and his work are mentioned in paragraph 4 to ________.

14.What can we infer about David Cronenberg’s films
A.They are not liked by many. B.They are of great artistic quality.
C.They are uplifting and enjoyable. D.They are created to make people angry.
15.What can we learn from the passage
A.Good art always makes us uncomfortable. B.Good art expresses the feelings of audiences.
C.Good art is not supposed to be enjoyed by all. D.Good art can be defined by experienced experts.
16.Which would be the best title for this passage
A.Judging Art: The Line between Good and Bad
B.Studying Art: The Features of Classic and Modern
C.Enjoying Art: The Acceptance of Strange and Uncomfortable
D.Creating Art: The Balance between Subjective and Objective

Steamed buns, or xiaolongbao, receive global recognition for their paper-thin skin and light, flavorful fillings. They are steamed to perfection, highlighting a harmonious blend of their delicate textures with the distinctive fresh and delicious broth (肉汤).
The buns, generally thought to have originated in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, were actually created by locals from Shengzhou (嵊州), a county-level city in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, around 120 kilometers southeast of Hangzhou.
Historical records show that the owner of the first xiaolongbao shop, believed that compared with Hangzhou, Shengzhou was less well-known to people. As a result, in order to attract customers, the owner decided to use Hangzhou on his signboard.
Natives of Shengzhou doing business across the country then followed suit, naming their shops Hangzhou xiaolongbao. Therefore, for a long time, Hangzhou xiaolongbao has been synonymous with Shengzhou xiaolongbao.
Local statistics show that there are about 50,000 Shengzhou natives who, relying on Shengzhou xiaolongbao, have opened more than 20,000 stores nationwide. Most of the shops that are scattered throughout the streets and alleys exist as mom-and-pop stores, with the handmade buns being of good quality.
However, compared to the modern production processes of many food outlets, the development of Shengzhou xiaolongbao faced limitations. Since 2016, the government of Shengzhou has rolled out an initiative to establish distinctive brands for both Shengzhou xiaolongbao and other local snacks, with an annual investment of 30 million yuan ($4 million) to fuel its growth.
Entrepreneurs (企业家) in Shengzhou have also blazed new trails by pioneering a production line for quick-frozen xiaolongbao. So far, there are more than 70 quick-frozen xiaolongbao companies in Shengzhou.

There were times when I tried to cut back on it, especially when I started to gain some weight, but I always ended up giving in to my cravings within a few days.

What makes Cronenberg so amazing is that he makes the uncomfortable and the strange into masterpieces.(他一直是我最喜欢的艺术家之一——并不是因为他的电影鼓舞了我。
根据第三段中“Art isn’t meant to make you feel comfortable. It isn’t meant to be watered down for any audience to enjoy. (艺术不是为了让你感觉舒服。它不是为了被淡化以让任何观众都能欣赏)”可知,好的艺术并非要让所有人都喜欢和欣赏。故选C项。
16.主旨大意题。根据第一段中“I recently came across a post in which the author announces that he has listed the “objective” (客观的) differences between good art and bad art. (我最近看到一篇文章,作者宣称他列出了‘好艺术’和‘坏艺术’的‘客观’区别)”以及最后一段“Plenty of people will try to tell you what “good art” is. You don’t have to follow their guidelines, though. Make your own boxes Deciding what art is for yourself is the very beauty of creation. (很多人会试图告诉你什么是‘好艺术’。不过,你不必遵循他们的标准。自己定义艺术,这正是创作的美妙之处)”可知,文章围绕如何判断好艺术和坏艺术展开讨论,指出艺术是主观的,不应该被他人定义的好坏标准所限制。A项“Judging Art: The Line between Good and Bad(评判艺术:好与坏的界限)”能概括文章内容,最适合作为文章标题。故选A项。

38.根据前句“We are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food.(在新的环境中,看到新的风景,听到新的声音和语言,吃到新的食物,我们都很兴奋。)” F“This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting .(这个阶段可以持续相当长的时间,因为我们觉得自己参与了某种伟大的冒险。)”

This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival rejecting or pulling away from the new culture. E“Unfortunately , the second stage can be more difficult . 42.Shengzhou, a county-level city in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. / Shengzhou. 43.To attract more customers./ Because Hangzhou is more famous. 44.Associated with./ Closely connected with. 45.The development of Shengzhou xiaolongbao faced limitations compared to modern production processes.
根据第二段中“The buns, generally thought to have originated in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, were actually created by locals from Shengzhou (嵊州), a county-level city in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, around 120 kilometers southeast of Hangzhou. (人们普遍认为包子起源于浙江省省会杭州,但实际上它是由浙江省绍兴市的一个县级市嵊州的当地人发明的,嵊州位于杭州东南约120公里处)”可知,小笼包真正的起源地是浙江嵊州。故答案为Shengzhou, a county-level city in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. / Shengzhou.
根据第三段中“Historical records show that the owner of the first xiaolongbao shop, believed that compared with Hangzhou, Shengzhou was less well-known to people. As a result, in order to attract customers, the owner decided to use Hangzhou on his signboard. (历史记录显示,第一家小笼包店的老板认为,与杭州相比,嵊州不那么为人们所熟知。因此,为了吸引顾客,老板决定在他的招牌上使用“杭州”这个词)”可知,第一家小笼包店老板选择在招牌上用杭州是因为杭州更有名,为了吸引顾客。故答案为To attract more customers./ Because Hangzhou is more famous.
根据划线词组上文“Natives of Shengzhou doing business across the country then followed suit, naming their shops Hangzhou xiaolongbao. (随后,在全国各地做生意的嵊州当地人也纷纷效仿,把他们的店铺命名为“杭州小笼包”)”可知,杭州小笼包与嵊州小笼包是紧密联系的,所以“synonymous with”意味着associated with/ closely connected with“与……有关联”。故答案为Associated with./ Closely connected with.
根据第六段中“However, compared to the modern production processes of many food outlets, the development of Shengzhou xiaolongbao faced limitations. (然而,与许多食品店的现代生产工艺相比,嵊州小笼包的发展面临着一些限制)” 可知,小笼包发展面临的挑战是现代生产工艺方面的限制。故答案为The development of Shengzhou xiaolongbao faced limitations compared to modern production processes.
It may make it more convenient for people to enjoy anytime, anywhere, possibly increasing its popularity and accessibility.

48.referred 49.to represent 50.association(s) 51.was considered 52.officials 53.who 54.pursuit 55.a 56.as 57.have made
“be believed to do sth.” 故填to represent。
“During the Tang Dynasty”表明句子时态为一般过去时,主语 “the peony”和“consider”之间是被动关系,即“牡丹被认为”,所以要用一般过去时的被动语态 “was/were + 过去分词”,主语是单数概念,故用 was considered。 故填was considered。
故填who。
故填a。
be admired as... 故填as。
“Over centuries” 表示“几个世纪以来”,是现在完成时的时间标志词,强调从过去持续到现在的动作或状态,主语 their rich history, deep symbolism, and aesthetic beauty是复数,所以用现在完成时“have + 过去分词”,即“have made”。 故填have made。

About a decade ago, Lawson was at a beach in Virginia watching his kids build castles right next to the waves.
“I kept trying to get them to come back because I thought it was a terrible idea,” he remarked. He wanted them to build their sandcastles closer to the dunes. But they found it more exciting to build right where the waves hit, seeing their sandcastles get destroyed, and then rebuilding them with whatever debris washed up from the ocean. “It seemed so symbolic, somehow, of how life works more than just building your perfect sandcastles,” said Lawson. When he decided to turn that sunny day into a children’s book, the idea came to just use pictures. “It seemed like it would work beautifully without words,” he said.
A Day for Sandcastles is illustrated by Qin Leng. It’s the second wordless picture book for Lawson and Leng since 2021’s Over the Shop. Leng’s illustrations stay pretty true to real life. Three siblings spend the day building sandcastles and watching them get destroyed by a flying hat. “To me it’s a celebration of childhood and the simple joys of life. These are the things I like to capture,” said Leng.
Leng spent part of her childhood in France, and she was inspired by European comic books. “What I love to do when I illustrate a picture book is add side stories to the main storyline. I always think about the readers and the longevity of the book, and I want them to be able to discover something new every time they revisit the book,” Leng explained.
At the end of the day, the sleepy-eyed kids pile into the bus that will take them home. “Those last pages are some of my favorite. They capture that feeling like at the end of the day on the beach, when it’s getting dark and you feel completely exhausted,” Lawson said. It must be a universal childhood feeling: happy with sand, sticky from the salt, hot from the sun, and ready to fall asleep the moment you get into the car.
4.Why does Lawson mention the scene where the kids built sandcastles
A.To suggest a way to enjoy leisure. B.To remind readers of the childhood.
C.To convince us of how life works. D.To tell us the inspiration for his book.
5.What do you know about the two books mentioned
A.They are purchased by kids universally. B.Readers can only find pictures in them.
C.They carry no elements of comic books. D.The stories are literally works of fantasy.
6.How does Lawson feel when telling us the last pages in the last paragraph
A.Relieved. B.Pleased. C.Disturbed. D.Exhausted.
7.What can be a suitable title for the passage
A.Childhood in sandcastles B.Beautiful childhood memories
C.Popular illustrated books D.Explore the mystery of nature
Enlightening, challenging, stimulating, fun. These were some of the words that Nature readers used to describe their experiences of art-science collaborations in a series of articles on partnerships between artists and researchers. Nearly 40% of the roughly 350 people who responded to an accompanying poll, said they had collaborated with artists; and almost all said they would consider doing so in future.
Such an encouraging result is not surprising. Scientists are increasingly seeking out visual artists to help them communicate their work to new audiences. “Artists help scientists reach a broader audience and make emotional connections that enhance learning,” one respondent said.
One example of how artists and scientists have together rocked the scenes came last month when the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performed a reworked version of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. They reimagined the 300-year-old score by injecting the latest climate prediction data for each season-provided by Monash University’s Climate Change Communication Research Hub. The performance was a creative call to action ahead of November’s United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, UK.
But a genuine partnership must be a two-way street. Fewer artists than scientists responded to the Nature poll; however, several respondents noted that artists do not simply assist scientists with their communication requirements. Nor should their work be considered only as an object of study. The alliances are most valuable when scientists and artists have a shared interest in a project, are able to jointly design it and can critique each other’s work. Such an approach can both prompt new research as well as result in powerful art.
More than half a century ago, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology opened its Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) to explore the role of technology in culture. The founders deliberately focused their projects around light—hence the"visual studies"in the name. Light was something that both artists and scientists had an interest in, and therefore could form the basis of collaboration. As science and technology progressed, and divided into more sub-disciplines, the centre was simultaneously (同时地) looking to a time when leading researchers could also be artists, writers and poets, and vice versa.
Nature’s poll findings suggest that this trend is as strong as ever, but, to make a collaboration work, both sides need to invest time, and embrace surprise and challenge. The reach of art-science tie-ups needs to go beyond the necessary purpose of research communication, and participant must not fall into the trap of stereotyping (对…产生成见) each other.
How many books have you finished since high school Between study, work, family, and social lives, trying to find time to read needs more effort than a relaxing hobby. How can you get reading books into your full schedule 37
Borrow more books than you can read. Libraries have very large “limits” on books you can take out. 38 Return anything you don’t like. Some of the most efficient readers return five out of six books unread. This is not something to be ashamed of.
39 If you have a whole morning to read, you might hope for more kinds. People who read a lot have something going to suit all tastes.
Try the 50-page rule. If you feel you have to finish all the books you start, you may be stuck in something boring and not read again for weeks. 40 You’ll find something else you love more soon.
Don’t care about any thoughts about what you “should” be reading. It is OK if you are not so interested in the world’s great literature. Read what you want. 41 If you’re only reading because you “should” read, then over time, reading will drop from the top of your list down to laundry level or going to the dentist.
A.Read more than one book at a time.
B.You may have trouble deciding what to read first.
C.Here’s how to make more time for your favorite books.
D.So go crazy and borrow anything that looks interesting.
E.Quit after a few dozen pages if you’re not feeling into it.
F.Reading is one of the most pleasurable activities out there.
G.People don’t do well with the feelings of suffering long term.

Growing up in San Francisco, Grace Young used to watch her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Chinese meals at home. As an award-winning cookbook author, Ms. Young, now 66, has spent decades shopping the same way in New York’s Chinatown.
Ms. Young developed a passion for cooking at an early age. At 13, she started to sit in on cooking classes. After college, Ms. Young moved to New York and worked in a book-packaging company. In her 30s, she realized that while she had helped create more than 40 cookbooks, she didn’t know how to make the dishes that tasted of home. “I knew if I recorded all of my parents’ recipes, it would be a great gift that I could give my family and the next generation.” she says.
Yet what began as a recipe book became a kind of memoir. Talking about food encouraged her parents to finally open up about their past, like the fact that her father had owned a Chinatown restaurant in the 1940s. “It was really an amazing way to learn not only my family’s recipes, but also my family’s story. “she says. The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen (1999) launched Ms. Young’s work in preserving and sustaining Chinese culinary (烹饪的)traditions.
Ms. Young has also devoted herself to supporting the restaurants in Chinatown. Since early 2020, Ms. Young has raised money to buy meals from Chinatown restaurants and deliver them to those in need. This year, instead of cooking at home for her husband and friends, she celebrated the Chinese New Year with various dishes from local restaurants in Chinatown. “If these restaurants don’t survive, Chinese culinary traditions in our city won’t survive.” she says.

根据第二段中的“ But they found it more exciting to build right where the waves hit, seeing their sandcastles get destroyed, and then rebuilding them with whatever debris washed up from the ocean. “It seemed so symbolic, somehow, of how life works more than just building your perfect sandcastles,” said Lawson. When he decided to turn that sunny day into a children’s book, the idea came to just use pictures.(但他们发现在海浪袭来的地方建造更令人兴奋,看着他们的沙堡被摧毁,然后用从海洋冲上来的任何碎片重建它们。劳森说:“从某种程度上说,这似乎很有象征意义,说明生活不仅仅是建造完美的沙堡。”当他决定把那个阳光明媚的日子写成一本儿童读物时,他想到了只用图片。)”可推测出,孩子们建造沙煲的场景是他写书的灵感来源。故选D。
5.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“A Day for Sandcastles is illustrated by Qin Leng. It’s the second wordless picture book for Lawson and Leng since 2021’s Over the Shop. (《A Day for Sandcastles》由冷琴插图。这是自2021年的《Over the Shop》以来,Lawson和冷的第二本无字绘本。)”可知,这两本书都是无字绘本,读者只能在里面找到图片。故选B。
6.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“‘Those last pages are some of my favorite. They capture that feeling like at the end of the day on the beach, when it’s getting dark and you feel completely exhausted,’ Lawson said. It must be a universal childhood feeling: happy with sand, sticky from the salt, hot from the sun, and ready to fall asleep the moment you get into the car.(Lawson说:‘最后几页是我最喜欢的。
全文围绕《A Day for Sandcastles》展开,这是一本描述孩子们在沙滩上建造城堡的无字绘本,再根据第三段中的“To me it’s a celebration of childhood and the simple joys of life.(对我来说,这是对童年和简单生活乐趣的庆祝。)” 故选A。

These were some of the words that Nature readers used to describe their experiences of art-science collaborations in a series of articles on partnerships between artists and researchers. Nearly 40% of the roughly 350 people who responded to an accompanying poll, said they had collaborated with artists; and almost all said they would consider doing so in future.(启发、挑战、刺激、有趣。在一系列关于艺术家和研究人员合作的文章中,《自然》杂志的读者用这些词来描述他们在艺术与科学合作方面的经历。在参与调查的350人中,近40%的人表示他们曾与艺术家合作过;几乎所有人都表示,他们会考虑在未来这么做。)”可知,根据第一段内容可以了解到,艺术-科学合作得到了良好的反响。故选B项。
9.推理判断题。根据第二段中“‘Artists help scientists reach a broader audience and make emotional connections that enhance learning,’ one respondent said.(“艺术家帮助科学家接触到更广泛的受众,并建立情感联系,从而增强学习能力。”一位受访者说。)”以及第三段“One example of how artists and scientists have together rocked the scenes came last month when the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performed a reworked version of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. They reimagined the 300-year-old score by injecting the latest climate prediction data for each season-provided by Monash University’s Climate Change Communication Research Hub. The performance was a creative call to action ahead of November’s United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, UK.[上个月,悉尼交响乐团(Sydney Symphony Orchestra)演奏了安东尼奥·维瓦尔第(Antonio Vivaldi)的《四季》(the Four Seasons)的重做版本,这是艺术家和科学家一起震撼感官的一个例子。他们利用莫纳什大学气候变化传播研究中心提供的每个季节的最新气候预测数据,重新想象了300年前的分数。在11月于英国格拉斯哥举行的联合国气候变化会议之前,这一表演是一种创造性的行动呼吁。]”可推知,重新制作的《四季》是为了说明艺术可以让观众更容易地接触科学。故选A项。
根据前文“But a genuine partnership must be a two-way street. Fewer artists than scientists responded to the Nature poll; however, several respondents noted that artists do not simply assist scientists with their communication requirements. Nor should their work be considered only as an object of study.(但真正的伙伴关系必须是双向的。回应《自然》调查的艺术家比科学家少;然而,一些受访者指出,艺术家不仅仅是帮助科学家满足他们的沟通需求。他们的工作也不应该仅仅被视为研究的对象。)”可知,本段真正的伙伴关系必须是双向的,也就是艺术家不仅仅是帮助科学家满足他们的沟通需求,而且能够共同设计这个项目,并能互相批评对方的工作,这种联盟是最有价值的,推知alliances应是“联盟”之意,和A项意思相近。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Nature’s poll findings suggest that this trend is as strong as ever, but, to make a collaboration work, both sides need to invest time, and embrace surprise and challenge. The reach of art-science tie-ups needs to go beyond the necessary purpose of research communication, and participant must not fall into the trap of stereotyping (对……产生成见) each other. Artists and scientists alike are immersed in discovery and invention, and challenge and critique are core to both, too.(《自然》杂志的民意调查结果表明,这种趋势一如既往地强劲,但是,为了使合作奏效,双方都需要投入时间,并接受惊喜和挑战。艺术与科学结合的范围需要超越研究交流的必要目的,参与者不能陷入彼此刻板印象的陷阱。艺术家和科学家都参与发现和发明,挑战和评论也是两者的核心。)”可推知,根据作者的说法,作者认为艺术与科学的合作应该做的不仅仅是传播科学。故选C项。

二、阅读单选(4题)(本大题共2小题)
In my childhood memories, when my classmates asked me how to pronounce those foreign sounds in our English class, I always said that it was easier to sing them. I was trained in music, so it seemed natural to use music as a way to learn new sounds. But I wondered, was there any truth in what I recommended
Later, I found that a growing body of research has proved that adult musicians’ brains are indeed functionally different from non-musicians’ brains. The differences were largely explained by the amount of music training they received as children. However, an important question remained: Were these effects driven by genetics (遗传学) or by personal experience
In a research program, we invited 9-month-old babies and their caregivers to our lab for 12 separate 15-minute visits over a month. We randomly assigned (随机分配) half of the babies to attend music lessons. During the process, their caregivers actively connected with the babies, such as moving them in time with musical beats. The other half just played freely. At the end of the month, we measured the babies’ brain activity in response to musical and speech sounds. We found that the babies attending the music lessons showed improved brain responses. These responses reflected their detection (察觉) of small differences in both musical and speech sounds: The result suggests that my earlier suggestion on learning foreign sounds through music might be reasonable.
Then what would happen in babies’ everyday lives We collected daylong audio recordings made in North American babies’ home environment when babies were 6, 10, 14, 18, and 24 months. Much to our surprise, we found that babies’ listening environment is mainly filled with speech rather than music. Further, the music that babies hear is largely from an electronic product that is not intended for them.
Despite the ever-growing market for music, our youngest children are missing out on quality musical interactions at home that could be highly beneficial to their development. It’s clear that we should focus on improving these opportunities to make a positive impact on millions of families.

A new song by the famous band The Beatles has been released despite half of the band members no longer being alive, thanks to the help of AI.
The Beatles was a legendary British rock band that remained second to Elvis Presley from the 1960s. It was made up of four musicians—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The new song, titled Now and Then, is unique because it combined the singing of McCartney and Starr with Lennon, who passed away in 1980, and the guitar skills of Harrison, who passed away in 2001.
The song was initially written and partly recorded by Lennon in the late 1970s and further developed by band mates years later but as technology then was limited, they didn’t release it due to the sound quality not being satisfying.
Peter Jackson, most famous for directing The Lord of the Rings, directed the music video for Norw and Then and it can be watched now online. It was thanks to new Al audio restoration (音频修复) technology that Peter Jackson allowed the four band members to “come together” one last time.
Since its release last week, the song has been well received in the UK. Beatles fans around the world favoured this historic musical event.
”Now and Then is an absolutely heart-warming piece of work, “posted Liam Gallagher, whose hits were affected by The Beatles’ musical style.
Of course, there are those who are not totally interested in the song. ”Now and Then is not terrible. But honestly, it’s kind of boring, “Geoff Edgers wrote in The Washington Post.
The Times in the UK said the song showed Al being used to its best advantage.
8.Why was the song “Now and Then” not released at first

When you think of a national park, you generally picture fresh air and wild animals, right Well, now you’re going to have to add tea shops and something called “the Underground” to your definition, because London, England has signed up to be the first “National Park City.”
London was founded by the Romans around 2,000 years ago and people have continually lived there since then. In all that time, however, nobody had the idea to replace all the parks with big box stores or high buildings, which means London already has a much lower urban density than most of the world’s cities. Nowadays about a third of the city is green space.
In July 2019, London announced its willingness to become the world’s first National Park City. Now the city is moving toward the goal of achieving 50% green space by the year 2050 by connecting and increasing public parks, greening unused parking lots and the private yards of existing and new houses, and fixing some green roofs on existing buildings.
“Encouraged by the aims and values of our rural national parks, the London National Park City is basically about making life better in the capital through both small everyday things and long-term thinking,” Daniel Raven-Ellison, who began the movement to make London a National Park City six years ago, said. “We’ve been doing that in London for centuries, which is why London is so green.” It’s about going further to make the city greener, healthier and wilder; making the city richer in wildlife.
London will have a much easier job achieving this type of green transformation than more densely-urbanized cities like Paris and New York, which have 10% and 27% green space, respectively. But that doesn’t mean it’s not possible — the National Park City Foundation hopes to include 25 more cities in addition to London by the year 2025. Glasgow, Scotland and Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England are both considering becoming National Park Cities.

13.What percent of London is green space now

For many, theater is more than entertainment; it is a vital way to build psychological skills-especially empathy, or our ability to share, understand and care about others’ emotions.
Research found that after watching theater, audience expressed more empathy for the characters onstage. The plays also changed behavior. Researchers gave audience members the option to donate some of their payment to charity. After seeing the plays, audience members donated more money to charity-whether or not the charity was related to the topics in the plays.
Why does live theater have these effects Sitting in the dark watching a play can make us forget our own worries and transport us into the life and mind of a different person. We found that the more people reported feeling “immersed” or “lost” in the play, the more their beliefs and behaviors were changed by it.
A classic finding in social psychology is that repeated, positive encounters with people unlike ourselves can build empathy. Many of us have too few experiences-or too little interest-in creating such encounters. Theaters provide the chance to see the experiences of people who differ from us in environments unlike our own.
The arts are essential to human flourishing(繁荣).As we move beyond the pandemic, we will need to focus on healing collectively and connecting better. Providing greater access to the arts-and using them to share stories across cultural and social difference-will be an important part of this path to recovery.

根据空后“In a society that is aging fast, it has become crucial to find ways to prevent related mental and emotional disorders.(在一个快速老龄化的社会中,找到预防相关精神和情感障碍的方法变得至关重要。)” E“However, it often involves a series of physical and mental challenges.(然而,它通常涉及一系列身体和精神上的挑战。)”
38.根据空前内容“Music has a great power to cause strong emotions and intense pleasure.(音乐有一种巨大的力量,能引起强烈的情感和强烈的快乐。)” D“This helps people feel better when they are depressed or anxious.(这有助于人们在抑郁或焦虑时感觉好一些。)”
根据下文“A song may become a soundtrack for a particular time , such as a delightful party with friends that you had a long time ago. Listening to that song allows you to remember all the happy memories from that time.(一首歌可能成为某一特定时刻的配乐,比如很久以前你和朋友一起参加的一个愉快的聚会。听那首歌会让你想起那时候所有的快乐回忆。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是音乐可以让你想起曾经的快乐的回忆。选项A“Music can also open forgotten doors to our memories.(音乐也可以打开被遗忘的记忆之门。)” 故选A。
40.根据下文“For example, exposure to background music, particularly classical music, during cognitive(认知的) tasks is shown to improve older people’s cognitive processes, such as processing speed and working memory.(例如,在认知任务中,暴露在背景音乐中,特别是古典音乐,被证明可以改善老年人的认知过程,如处理速度和工作记忆。)” C“Even passive music listening can help elderly adults think better.(即使是被动听音乐也能帮助老年人更好地思考。)”

【小题40】Empathy is our ability to share, understand and care about others’ emotions.;
【小题41】Live theater enabled audience to express more empathy for the characters onstage and change their behavior.;
【小题42】Theater can build empathy because it offers us encounters that remind us of our past experiences.
Theater can build empathy because it offers us encounters that help us see different experiences.;
根据文章第一段“it is a vital way to build psychological skills-especially empathy, or our ability to share, understand and care about others’ emotions.(这是建立心理技能的重要途径——尤其是同理心,即我们分享、理解和关心他人情绪的能力。)” Empathy is our ability to share, understand and care about others’ emotions.
根据第三段“Sitting in the dark watching a play can make us forget our own worries and transport us into the life and mind of a different person. We found that the more people reported feeling “immersed” or “lost” in the play, the more their beliefs and behaviors were changed by it.(坐在黑暗中看戏剧可以让我们忘记自己的烦恼,把我们带入另一个人的生活和思想。我们发现,人越“沉浸”或“迷失”与戏剧,他们的信念和行为就越会被改变。)”可知,在观看现场演出时,人们会更容易忘记自己的烦恼而沉浸到角色的感情中,最终改变自己的行为。故答案为Live theater enabled audience to express more empathy for the characters onstage and change their behavior。
根据第四段“A classic finding in social psychology is that repeated, positive encounters with people unlike ourselves can build empathy. Many of us have too few experiences-or too little interest-in creating such encounters. Theaters provide the chance to see the experiences of people who differ from us in environments unlike our own.(社会心理学的一个经典发现是,与和自己不同的人反复积极地接触可以建立同理心。我们中的许多人在创造这样的邂逅方面经验太少——或者兴趣太少。戏剧提供了一个机会,让我们在不同的环境中看到与我们不同的人的经历。)”可知,戏剧能建立同理心的原因不是让我们想起以前的经历,而是戏剧给我们一些邂逅能够去体验不同的经历。所以原句中“remind us of our past experiences.(提醒我们过去的经历。)” Theater can build empathy because it offers us encounters that remind us of our past experiences.
Theater can build empathy because it offers us encounters that help us see different experiences.
Being on the stage can built empathy as well. For instance, taking acting classed can improve students’ empathy. The same is true for experiencing more solitary art forms, such as reading. Even reading “Harry Potter” had been shown to reduce prejudice toward stigmatized groups in children. Or you can expand your empathy at home by picking up a novel.

At present, Internet slang has become more and more popular among the teenagers. According to a survey conducted by our Students’ Union, students’ opinions on this issue are divided as follows.
Most of the students are in favor of Internet slang. About 35% of the students hold the view that Internet slang is vivid and fashionable. Another 33% of them enjoy its humor and intelligence. And a quarter of the students believe it makes chatting on the Internet more convenient. However, there are 7% of the students thinking Internet slang lacks depth of thought and is too casual. In addition, it is hard for most people to understand and accept this kind of slang. If it is used too much in a passage, it may make readers confused, and even cause misunderstanding.
In my opinion, living in the Information Age, if we are not familiar with Internet slang, we are likely to fall behind.

Hello everyone!
Today, the theme of my speech is “The Chinese Spring Festival in My Eyes.”
The Spring Festival is the holiday I look forward to the most each year. Last year during the Spring Festival, I gathered with my family around the table to enjoy a sumptuous reunion dinner. At that moment, the room was filled with laughter and joy, and the strong festive atmosphere made me feel warm and cherished.
The successful application for the Spring Festival to be recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage is not only an acknowledgment of our traditional culture but also allows the world to understand the customs of the Chinese Spring Festival. Frequently Asked Questions about London Theatres
London has a world-leading theatre scene, and it’s particularly strong when it comes to family shows. Read the FAQ to make your family theatre trip a pleasant one.
Can children go to all theatres
Most shows are suitable for people aged 12 or older. Some productions might have material that is too mature for younger theatregoers. However, there are also fantastic family shows which are appropriate for all ages, or which are specifically aimed at kids.
Are children booster seats available
Some theatres, though not all, provide booster seats-for example, Nederlander theatres rent height-adjustable seats for 1 if you ask a member of staff. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Some venues will also have height restrictions so that audience sitting behind you can still see.
Are there frequent breaks throughout the duration of a performance
If it’s a show for a general audience, there will usually be one or two intervals based on the running time. Most shows designed specifically for younger audiences will have short running times, like an hour or less.
Can I bring my own snacks and drinks into the theatre
Most theatres won’t allow you to bring your own snacks and drinks. They sell food and drink in the theatre and that’s part of how they bring in profit. If you have concerns about dietary requirements, you can contact the theatre beforehand to make arrangements.
Find all the latest recommendations and more information about the rules on Telegraph Tickets, or check with the box office.
1.Where is the text probably from
A.A theatre guide. B.A drama review.
C.A show advertisement. D.A performance schedule.

If you are an enthusiastic reader, you may not have enough room to store all the books you read. And the cost of buying books keeps rising. Now there is a perfect solution in the UK: Bookloop. It is an online buy-back project in partnership with existing booksellers, where readers can trade books they have already read for credit or more pre-owned books.
Readers can scan (扫描) and upload their books to an online valuation system, and then drop them off at a collection point or have them picked up from their own home, in exchange for credit to be used on other books. Readers must sell at least 5 worth of books to take part. Eric Gagnaire, co-founder of Bookloop, said, “By giving books a second life, we are not only reducing waste but also building a community of readers who value sustainability and support bookshops.”
Bookbag, a bookseller that has joined the program, describes it as “a social space” that gathers a global range of fiction and non-fiction writing. “We’re glad to see this program, which feels well-thought-through and a great way of repurposing books and helping sustain bookshops and new book purchase,” they said. Authors will also benefit from the program, as royalties from these secondhand book sales will be redistributed through a shared author fund.
Reception to the launch of Bookloop hasn’t been universally positive, however. Some secondhand booksellers like Patrick Kelly, owner of Bookmongers in Brixton, raise concerns about how many books will actually be sold on to readers. Kelly argued that most secondhand books should be recycled. “They are either no longer relevant, overly produced, or are left in bad condition,” he said.
In response, Bookloop stated that only 2% of collected books end up not being resold-most of the unsold books are donated to local charities, with less than 0.5% recycled. “Getting pre-owned books to new readers while benefiting both bookshops and authors feels extremely positive,” said Gagnaire. “It’s a really sustainable way of getting books into the hands of more people, without cost being a barrier.”
4.What is a requirement for readers to participate in Bookloop
A.Trading their credit for new books.
B.Selling used books worth 5 or more.
C.Dropping off their books at a local library.
D.Uploading personal information to the system.
5.What does Bookbag think of Bookloop
A.It is a win-win initiative.
B.It boosts interest in reading.
C.It is a well-planned book fair.
D.It encourages authors to write.
6.Why is Patrick Kelly mentioned
A.To clarify a misunderstanding.
B.To suggest a brand-new resolution.
C.To present a contrasting viewpoint.
D.To highlight an unusual phenomenon.
7.What can be the best title for the text
A.The Rise of Secondhand Book Trading
B.Reducing Waste, Building a Reputation

D.Innovating Reading: The Bookloop Initiative
Learning to play a musical instrument can be more than just an enjoyable hobby. Whether it’s playing the piano, taking some guitar lessons, joining your school band, or starting a rock group, playing a musical instrument may help improve your mind. If people wonder what you’re up to, tell them you’re doing something important. You may be making yourself a little bit smarter.
A new study shows that young children who learn to sing or play a musical instrument might have a slight advantage over those who don’t take music lessons.
The study focused on 132 first graders in Canada. The researchers, from the University of Toronto at Mississauga, randomly(随机) put the students into three groups. One group took weekly lessons with instruments, such as violins and pianos. The second group took singing lessons. The third group went to drama class.
All the participants took IQ tests at the beginning and at the end of the first grade. Overall, average scores went up for all groups. But kids who took piano or violin lessons scored higher marks. Their IQ scores went up 7.0 points on average, compared with 4.3 points for kids in the other two groups.
The difference may seem small, and the music students probably won’t end up getting higher grades or having greater success later in life. Even so, the researchers believe the results are still meaningful. Playing a musical instrument requires kids to pay more attention and memorize things. The process of reading music and mastering finger placement is connected with fine motor skills and even better hand-eye coordination(协调). These types of experiences may have positive effects on the developing brains of young people.
So, why not pick up an instrument like a guitar or violin It’s a great way to improve yourself and bring more music into the world. After all, who wouldn’t want to make the world sound better
8.What is the first paragraph mainly talking about
A.The skills needed to master different musical instruments.
B.The idea that playing a musical instrument is beyond fun.
C.The reasons why playing a musical instrument is enjoyable.
D.The various ways to improve one’s mind and become smart.
9.How did the researchers get their findings
A.They interviewed college graduates.
B.They collected students’ written reports.
C.They observed students’ daily habits.
D.They made comparisons among groups.
10.How can playing a musical instrument affect the children from the study
A.It helps them control hand movements better.
B.It makes them get the highest grades in class.
C.It enables them to become professional musicians.
D.It makes them more popular with their classmates.
11.Where is this text probably from
A.A course plan. B.A music score.
C.A science journal. D.A fashion magazine.
Storytelling is an ancient art form that has been used to hand down legends, tales and factual stories. Perhaps the first thing that springs to mind when you think of storytelling is the fantasy land that took shape in your mind while Mom or Dad told you stories about princes, castles and monsters, with a unique voice for each character.
Storytelling does not just take place at bedtime or round a campfire, however. It can take some other forms, either via the books we read or the films we watch. But they usually have some elements in common: rather than a list of dry facts, stories have plots and they introduce characters. We respond to stories, particularly when there is emotional detail.
And unlike what we suppose, storytelling is not just a form of entertainment, but a form of learning as well. Long before reading and writing became widely spread and available, oral storytelling had already been a form that the wisdom and knowledge of the people were passed down from elders to children. A good story engages our curiosity, emotions and imagination.
Storytelling helps with learning also because stories are easy to remember. Research has found that learning obtained from a well-told story is remembered more accurately, and for far longer, than from facts and figures.
And above all, stories have a transformative power to allow us to see the world in a different way than we do if we just encounter it on our own. Stories are an entry point to understanding a different experience of the world.
This aspect of storytelling-presenting a different perspective of the world—is important when it comes to connecting with each other. It gives us an opportunity to learn from another person’s experience and it can shape, strengthen or challenge our opinions and values. So, when someone tells us their own personal story, we catch a glimpse (瞥见) of a view of the world that may be slightly or significantly different from our own. When we see the world as they see it, or walk in their shoes, the experience can inspire empathy (共情;同理心) with them.
12.What occurs to us the moment we think of “storytelling”
A.A child's imaginary world.
B.Voices of Mom or Dad.
C.An ancient art form.
D.Factual stories.
13.What are the common elements in all forms of storytelling according to the author
A.Form and style.
B.Facts and figures.
C.Emotional and physical details.
D.A series of events and characters.
14.Why does storytelling work better than mere statement of facts in promoting learning
A.It carries more wisdom and knowledge.
B.It is more widely available to young learners.
C.It satisfies our imagination and releases our emotions.
D.It makes what is learned more precise and longer lasting.
15.How can other people’s personal stories probably benefit us
A.By offering us more opportunities to know people.
B.By helping us stay connected with the contemporary world.
C.By allowing us to understand the world the way they see it.
D.By enabling us to tell reality from imagination.
16.What makes the best title for the passage
A.The History of Storytelling
B.The Power of Storytelling
C.The Forms of Storytelling
D.The Art of Storytelling

Tea is an important part of Chinese tradition. With the development of Chinese society and economy, the scale of tea production has been increasing. 37 In turn, tea production promotes economic development and tea culture promotes social progress.
Tea has an extremely close relationship to Chinese culture. 38 It not only reflects the spirit of civilization, but also the spirit of ideas. There is no doubt that it is beneficial to improve people’s social quality and artistic taste.
The original idea is credited to the legendary Emperor Shennong. He is said to have lived 5,000 years ago and he was well conscious of health. He required that all drinking water be boiled as a health precaution. A story goes that, one summer day, while visiting a distant part of his kingdom, Shennong and the court stopped to rest. 39 Dried leaves from a nearby bush fell into the boiling water, and a brown substance was injected into the water. The Emperor was interested in the new liquid, drank some, and found it very refreshing. And so tea was created.
40 It refreshes the mind, clears heat within the human body and helps people lose weight. As you add a cup of tea to your daily routine, it is suggested that you drink while it is hot to get the best out of tea. Its nutrients decrease over time. 41 Do not drink tea soon after or before meals. Guns have a special place in American culture, and though not everyone agrees on whether or not they are a good thing, there is no mistaking that they will be part of the cultural landscape for some time. To answer the question, no, not everyone has a gun. 42
Americans use guns for one of two uses: either for sport, where they can use them on firing ranges or for hunting in approved areas, or for self-protection. The latter is where most people begin to take sides, either arguing for the removal of guns from society or allowing more people to have them. There are organizations and community groups for both sides and both sides have strong feelings.
Legally, there are restrictions on gun owners. 43 Only certain kinds of weapons can be purchased by the public, and that excludes automatic weapon and military grade weaponry. Gun owners must transport their weapon in a safe way, unloaded and in most cases, out of sight. Special—concealed carry permits from the police station must be obtained for people who want to wear weapon, and most people are rejected for this kind of permit. 44 Criminals steal guns or buy them illegally to commit crimes, and the news is full of terrible stories of what happened next. Occasionally a child will get a hold of legal weapon and accidentally hurt themselves or others.
It is important to remember, however, that the news stories that make the United States seem like a dangerous place are deceiving; guns are not everywhere or constant. 45 After all, America is a safe place to live.
A.You are only allowed to purchase a firearm if you have had a background check and meet certain legal requirements.
B.There have been many enlightening articles on gun control in America.
C.If you were to visit the United States for two months the only gun you might see is in a museum or on a police officer.
D.Less than fifty percent of homes in the United States own weapons, and many of those homes are in rural areas where guns may have a greater use.
E.More people are deciding to legalize their gun transactions instead of buying them on the black market.
F.What alarms people the most about American gun culture are the illegal guns and shooting, which make some places feel unsafe.

故选A项。
根据第三段中“Some theatres, though not all, provide booster seats for example, Nederlander theatres rent height adjustable seats for 1 if you ask a member of staff. They are available on a first come, first served basis.(一些剧院,并非所有剧院,提供增高座椅。例如,如果你向工作人员提出要求,Nederlander剧院会以1英镑的价格出租可调节高度的座椅。这些座椅是先到先得的)”可知,并不是每个剧院都有增高座椅,且是收费出租的,也未提及是安全规则要求的,而先到先得,说明数量是有限的。故选D项。
3.细节理解题。根据第五段中“Most theatres won’t allow you to bring your own snacks and drinks. They sell food and drink in the theatre and that’s part of how they bring in profit.(大多数剧院不允许你自带零食和饮料。他们在剧院内出售食品和饮料,这是他们盈利的一部分)”可知,剧院的饮食政策是为了获得经济收益。故选A项。

Dear headmaster,
I’m Li Hua, a student from Grade 1, Class 1. I’m very glad to hear that our school has decided to buy new books for the library.
Although our library has a large collection of books, I don’t think they can meet students’ needs. Among all the books, test-prep books are in the majority, making up 60 percent. 20 percent of the books belong to biography and 10 percent art. Only 15 percent are literature books, which is too small.
So I think we should buy more literature books, especially the ones of traditional Chinese. They can not only make us feel relaxed in the busy study, but also broaden our vision and enrich our minds, helping us form the right attitude toward life.
I would appreciate it if you would take my suggestion into consideration.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

Dear Tom,
I’m writing to discuss our joint performance for the Time Machine Music Festival, which I think will be a great opportunity to show our talents. My idea is that we should blend Chinese classical songs with British rock classics by using a “musical time travel” theme. We can start with ancient Chinese guqin melodies, transition to 1980s British rock, and end with a modern fusion song.
This design aims to showcase cultural connections across eras and enhance audience interaction. Your British music expertise and my traditional instrument skills could create unique chemistry. Do you have other ideas about song choices or the performance
Looking forward to your ideas!
Yours,
Li Hua

Listen carefully to a spoken conversation and you’ll notice that the speakers use a lot of little quasi-words — mm-hmm, um, huh and the like — that don’t convey any information about the topic of the conversation itself: For many decades, linguists regarded such utterances as largely irrelevant noise. But these little words may be much more important than that. A few linguists now think that they may be crucial traffic signals to control the progression of conversation as well as tools to negotiate mutual understanding.
For most of the history of linguistics, scholars have tended to focus on written language, in large part because that’s what they had records of. But once recordings of conversation became available, they could begin to analyze spoken language the same way as writing. When they did, they observed that interjections — that is, short utterances of just a word or two that are not part of a larger sentence — were ubiquitous in everyday speech.
Many of these interjections serve to regulate the flow of conversation. An um or uh from the speaker, for example, signals that they’re about to pause, but aren’t finished speaking. A quick huh or what from the listener, on the other hand, can signal a failure of communication that the speaker needs to repair. In a survey of 31 languages around the world, researchers found that all of them used a short, neutral syllable similar to huh as a repair signal, probably because it’s quick to produce.
Different interjections can send slightly different signals. Consider, for example, one person describing to another how to build a piece of IKEA furniture, says Allison Nguyen, a psycholinguist at Illinois State University. In such a conversation, mm-hmm might indicate that the speaker should continue explaining the current step, while yeah or OK would imply that the listener is done with that step and it’s time to move on to the next.
4.The phrase “traffic signals” in paragraph 1 emphasizes interjections’ ______.
A.decorative role in conversation B.rank-related function in grammar
C.regulatory power in dialogue flow D.evolutionary origin in pronunciation
5.What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Universal. B.Complex. C.Limited. D.Formal.
6.What is paragraph3 mainly about
A.The functions of interjections. B.The signals’ cultural differences.
C.Regulations in a conversation. D.The global incidence of interjections.
7.What does the IKEA furniture example illustrate
A.Listeners use interjections to demonstrate authority.
B.Context decides interjections’ interpretation difference.
C.Task-directed conversations require more interjections.
D.Speakers adapt interjections based on listeners’ feedback.
Alex is my regular hiking, ice-climbing, and mountain-biking partner. We were on a one-night trip, and what he brought for dinner was just rice. Literally nothing else.
This was not because he was trying to pack as light as possible, nor was it because he was broke. I tried to convince him to at least add some soy sauce (酱油) to it. But no, Alex wasn’t having any of it. “I don’t need it,” he said simply.
Now, if he was talking only about outdoors’ meals, I almost understood the reason. When you’re ravenous after a day of burning off calories walking or climbing or backcountry skiing in the mountains, how awesome do things taste! Just as the saying goes, hunger is the best sauce. And I agree. Absolutely.
But there’s more to it than that. Last month, I went down the coast car camping with my family. One morning, my wife made a statement. “I don’t see the point,” she said. “It’s so much work, camping. But the views at home are better. The beds are more comfortable. It’s more peaceful. And at home, the food is better.” I’ll admit she’s right about the first three. But the food We had a simple pasta one night, snags another, chicken curry the third, but they all tasted good. Better than at home. And it wasn’t simply that we were hungry; it was because we were camping.
The real point I want to convey is that meals taste particularly good when I’m camping because it reminds me of things that are easily overlooked at home, where I can just go to the cupboard or the supermarket and grab whatever I feel like. When you’re camping, life is reduced to its essentials, and I’m reminded of how privileged most of us are to be dry, warm and fed. More importantly, I’m reminded that, sadly, not everyone is as fortunate as we are. And I’m reminded that, as a society, we should do better for them.
8.Why did Alex bring only rice for dinner on the trip
A.He didn’t like soy sauce. B.He preferred to travel light.
C.He couldn’t afford a better meal. D.He thought simple food enough outdoors.
9.What does the underlined word “ravenous” in the third paragraph mean
A.Exhausted. B.Starving. C.Charming. D.Refreshed.
10.What makes the author sad in the last paragraph
A.Some people lack the basic necessities of life. B.Some people fail to appreciate what they have.
C.People easily forget the beauty of simple things. D.People easily quit camping due to its discomfort.
11.What message does the author want to convey in the passage
A.Camping is a test of adaptability to challenges. B.Camping is a bonding experience for family.
C.Camping is a reminder of our good life. D.Camping is a chance to enjoy a feast.
D
Recently, I observed how socio-cultural forces can restrict personal choices, as some people fear rejection from their communities if they act differently. Social cohesion (融合) is woven into the fabric of our lives, so in closely integrated communities, that would mean losing everything.
Making choices that differ from those of most people around us is definitely a risky strategy to take. Anything that distracts us from the safety and comfort brought by the sense of belonging shakes us to our very core. We are a complex social species, and there are social rules that create stability. We, like other social species, will move toward an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS), a behavioral strategy in a population that, once established, cannot easily be replaced by alternative strategies because it provides a high level of stability and success. We often make decisions by unconsciously reviewing what people around us are doing, and then do the same thing. Being different is uncomfortable.
However, there are always individuals who bring innovation. Think about the first macaque monkey on an isolated island that walked into the water carrying a sweet potato and washed it in the ocean. Over time, other monkeys in its group adopted this behavior, which became a part of their culture and has even been passed down through generations. This kind of new approach requires courage, creativity, a strong will, and the willingness to be rejected. Innovation can solve a problem in a new way, create a social and cultural impact felt by later generations, or result in the grandest love you might ever encounter.
Life is scary, and life is uncertain. It’s natural to try to hold on to what we know to feel secure. But someone recently said to me, “If all you know extends only the length of your nose, you don’t know very much at all.” True understanding requires looking beyond personal experiences or surroundings to gain a more complete view of the world. Not being able to choose freely or be different holds back everyone’s progress.
12.What does “that” underlined in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Weakening one’s bonds with the community.
B.Relying on the protection of one’s community.
C.Taking a different path within one’s community
D.Being frightened by the rejection from their communities.
13.What is the psychological effect of being different from others
A.It causes discomfort. B.It increases creativity.
C.It strengthens social bonds. D.It improves decision-making skills.
14.Why does the author mention the macaque monkey
A.To show that monkeys have complex social rule.
B.To explain the motivation behind monkey evolution.
C.To highlight the importance of community support.
D.To demonstrate the power of individual innovation.
15.What is the main argument of the text
A.Creativity ensures community stability.
B.Being different may encourage progress.
C.Success comes from facing the fear of rejection.
D.Humans and monkeys share similar social structures.

【答案】1.D 2.A 3.D
根据文章“on-campus program —— three weeks, for students with journalism experience(校内项目为期三周——适用于有新闻经验的学生)”可知,选择校内课程的学生需要具备新闻经验。故选D。
根据文章倒数第二段中“Newsroom provides time for students to apply what they learn in the Classroom part by reporting real news events near them.(新闻室为学生提供时间,将他们在课堂部分学到的知识通过报道附近的真实新闻事件加以应用)”可知,“Newsroom”部分侧重于实践应用。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Guest Talks offer students advice and insight from journalism experts on topics such as radio reporting, media law and studying journalism in college.(嘉宾讲座为学生提供有关广播报道、媒体法和大学新闻学习等主题的建议和见解)”可知,在线学习的学生可以从专家那里获得建议。
【答案】4.C 5.A 6.A 7.B
根据第一段中“A few linguists now think that they may be crucial traffic signals to control the progression of conversation as well as tools to negotiate mutual understanding. (现在,一些语言学家认为,它们可能是控制对话进程的关键traffic signals,也是协商相互理解的工具)”可知,第一段中的“traffic signals”一词强调了感叹词在对话流程中的调控作用。故选C。
5.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“When they did, they observed that interjections — that is, short utterances of just a word or two that are not part of a larger sentence — were ubiquitous in everyday speech. (当他们这样做时,他们观察到感叹词——即只是一两个词组成的简短话语,不属于更大的句子的一部分——在日常口语中是ubiquitous)”结合语境可知,感叹词在日常口语中是“普遍存在的”。A. Universal普遍的;B. Complex复杂的;C. Limited有限的;D. Formal正式的。故选A。
根据第三段“Many of these interjections serve to regulate the flow of conversation. (这些感叹词中的许多都是用来调节谈话的流畅性的。例如,说话人说“嗯”或“嗯”,表示他们要暂停,但还没有说完。快啊?还是别的什么?另一方面,从听者那里可以看出说话者需要修复的沟通失败。在一项对全球31种语言的调查中,研究人员发现,所有语言都使用类似huh?作为修复信号,可能是因为它产生得很快)”可知,第三段主要讲述的是感叹词的功能。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Consider, for example, one person describing to another how to build a piece of IKEA furniture, says Allison Nguyen, a psycholinguist at Illinois State University. In such a conversation, mm-hmm might indicate that the speaker should continue explaining the current step, while yeah or OK would imply that the listener is done with that step and it’s time to move on to the next.
【答案】8.D 9.B 10.A 11.C

根据第二段“But no, Alex wasn’t having any of it. “I don’t need it,” he said simply.(但不,亚历克斯根本不接受我的建议。“我不需要它,”他简单地说道)”可知,Alex认为在户外简单的食物就足够了,不需要复杂的调味或更多的食物。故选D。
9.词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“after a day of burning off calories walking or climbing or backcountry skiing in the mountains(在进行了一整天的步行、登山或在山区进行越野滑雪等消耗卡路里的运动之后)”可知,在户外活动一天后,人们消耗了大量卡路里,感到非常饿的状态。
根据最后一段“When you’re camping, life is reduced to its essentials, and I’m reminded of how privileged most of us are to be dry, warm and fed. More importantly, I’m reminded that, sadly, not everyone is as fortunate as we are. And I’m reminded that, as a society, we should do better for them.(当你在露营时,生活就变得极其简单纯粹了。这让我想起我们大多数人是多么幸运能够保持干爽、温暖并且有食物可吃。更重要的是,这让我意识到,令人遗憾的是,并非所有人都像我们这般幸运。而且我还意识到,作为一个社会,我们应该为他们做得更好)”可知,作者感到难过的是,有些人缺乏基本的生活必需品。故选A。
根据最后一段“When you’re camping, life is reduced to its essentials, and I’m reminded of how privileged most of us are to be dry, warm and fed. More importantly, I’m reminded that, sadly, not everyone is as fortunate as we are. And I’m reminded that, as a society, we should do better for them.(当你在露营时,生活就变得极其简单纯粹了。这让我想起我们大多数人是多么幸运能够保持干爽、温暖并且有食物可吃。更重要的是,这让我意识到,令人遗憾的是,并非所有人都像我们这般幸运。而且我还意识到,作为一个社会,我们应该为他们做得更好)”可知,选项C“露营是一种提醒人们所拥有的美好生活的方式”是作者想通过文字传递的信息。故选C。

【详解】12.词句猜测题。根据第一段“Recently, I observed how socio-cultural forces can restrict personal choices, as some people fear rejection from their communities if they act differently. Social cohesion (融合) is woven into the fabric of our lives, so in closely integrated communities, that would mean losing everything.(最近,我观察到社会文化力量如何限制个人选择,因为有些人担心如果他们的行为与众不同,会被社区拒绝。社会凝聚力融入了我们生活的结构中,所以在紧密融合的社区中,那意味着失去一切。)”可知,“that”指的是前一句中的“if they act differently”,即做出与他人不同的选择,也就是“在社区内走不同的道路”。故选C。
13.细节理解题。根据第二段“We often make decisions by unconsciously reviewing what people around us are doing, and then do the same thing. Being different is uncomfortable.(我们经常通过无意识地观察周围的人在做什么,然后做同样的事情。与众不同会让人不舒服。)”可知,与他人不同会让人感到不舒服。故选A。
根据第三段“However, there are always individuals who bring innovation. Think about the first macaque monkey on an isolated island that walked into the water carrying a sweet potato and washed it in the ocean. Over time, other monkeys in its group adopted this behavior, which became a part of their culture and has even been passed down through generations.(然而,总有个体会带来创新。

Recently, a survey was conducted among students regarding their participation in out-of-school courses. The survey shows 39% of students take sports courses, 29% choose art courses, 20% participate in science courses, while only 12% engage in volunteering courses.
It’s good to see many students in sports activities, which benefits their well-being. The popularity of art courses is also positive for creativity. However, more focus should be on volunteering courses to develop social responsibility and real-world skills.
