①What brought you and your friends together Was it shared hobbies or similar personalities Apart
from these common reasons, genes(基因)may also play a role.
②According to a US study with 1, 932 people, friends have a kinship coefficient(亲缘系数)that is 0.
0014 higher than in strangers! The kinship coefficient is an easy way to see how genetically related two
people are—the higher the number, the closer the relation.
③Don't look down on this number. The kinship coefficient between parents and children is about 0. 25.
For first cousins, it's about 0. 0625, while for fourth cousins, it's around only 0. 001. This means you might
share more genes with your best friend than with some distant(远房的)family members.
④The question is--why are people with a high level of kinship coefficient more likely to become friends
The research team found that many of the top one percent of similar genes are related to the sense of smell.
This means that close friends may have a similar sense of smell.
⑤A study in Science Advances also showed that people who become close friends usually have similar
body smells. Researchers collected sweat samples(汗液样本)from 20 pairs of friends. They all became
close in a short time. Using an e-nose and human volunteers to study the smells, they found that friends'
body odors(体味)were more alike than those of strangers. So. next time you hug your friends, you might
notice that they smell a bit like you!
19.What can the kinship coefficient show
A.How close two friends are related.
B.How much two friends have in common.
C.How long it takes two strangers to become friends.
D.How close the genetic relation between two people is.
20.What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A.Best friends can share more genetic similarities than distant relatives.

On the first day of Grade 8 in 1963, Mr Lemke greeted our energetic class as our English and
homeroom teacher. He spoke with purpose and warmth, making it clear that he would manage our class
strictly. He announced we would learn 400 lines of poetry(诗歌)by heart that year.
I wasn't a very clever or quiet 12-year-old, trying to figure out who I was in my Jewish family. I also
wondered how I would ever memorize so much poetry.
As the weeks passed, Mr Lemke had us savor(品味)poems like delicious dishes. He invited us to tune
in to their rhythm, mood and meaning. We would study the poet's life and imagine the event that inspired the
poem.
One of the first poems we learned was To Autumn by John Keats, written in 1819. It praises the harvest
season and nature's richness, while also speaking of the coming of death and decay(衰败). Keats advises
us not to worry about the future, "Where are the songs of Spring Ay, where are they Think not of them,
thou has t thy music too. "
Naturally, we complained about having to memorize To Autumn and about 20 other poems that year.
There were romantic poems, funny poems and strange poems. I'd shut myself away in my bedroom and go
over a poem line by line until I could repeat it by heart.
Anyway, I got through Grade 8. When I went to high school, I still felt like an oddball(怪人), but at
least there were a few more oddballs around. That Autumn, when the leaves started to turn their brilliant(鲜
艳的)colors, I found myself repeating those same lines of Keats.
It took me years to realize the gift Mr Lemke had given me through poetry. He believed poetry could
make me a better person and invited me to value it as part of myself. He taught me what learning"by heart"
was all about.
23.How did the writer feel about memorizing poems at first
A.She was excited about the challenge.
B.She was unsure about its importance.
C.She felt doubtful about finishing the task.
D.She felt confident in her memory skills.
24.Why does the writer mention To Autumn by John Keats
A.To praise the beauty of the season.
B.To explain why she loves Keats' poems.
C.To show the difficulty of repeating poems.
D.To stress how repeating poetry influenced her.
25.What did the writer realize years later thanks to Mr Lemke's teaching
A.Poetry made her a better person.
B.She should have become a poet.
C.Reciting was the best way to learn.
D.Poetry was best enjoyed at school.
26.What can be the best title of the text
A.To Autumn by John Keats B.Mr Lemke and his poetry
C.A gift for the heart D.My experience to learn poems
A man in a laboratory sits with his eyes nervously focused on a microscope(显微镜). Time is short. the
risks are great. and only this scientist can save everyone. That kind picture of science was standard for a long
time. But it's far from the truth.
●An activity with many goals
Some scientists search for the causes of some eye-catching effects, such as the connection between
destroyed forests and the earth's temperature increase. Others may look into the" what" rather than the" why"
of things. For cxample. scientists build models to guess how many gray wolves live in Montana, US. It's not
possible to see and count every wolf. Such models aren't perfect, but they give numbers that are good enough
to decide how many wolves can be hunted and still keep the environment balanced.
Besides the "what" and the "why", scientists may focus on the "how". For example, the lives of people
living with illnesses can be improved by research on how to reduce their signs, even if we don't fully
understand what causes these illnesses yet.
●Science has complex(复杂的)answers
Scientists often deal with complex problems, so they don't usually offer one perfect answer. Instead,
they look at different answers.
Back to the wolf example, to guess the number of wolves, they use different models based on data like
wolf howls(呣叫), photos and so on.
People often think "real science" should provide clear and foolproof answers to their questions.
However, because of the world's complexity, it's often better for scientists to consider different views to
reach their goals and solve the problems at hand.
●Science as a collective(共同的)effort
Finally, in the area of science, healthy disagreement is normal. Science is a social process where minds
come together to make sure that we have the best knowledge available. "Best available" means it's the best
we have until we can improve it.
So, real science is a collective effort. It is complex and imperfect, and sometimes only offers incomplete
answers to complex problems.
27.How does the writer introduce the topic of the text
A.By showing a common misunderstanding.
B.By describing a scientific research process.
C.By sharing a scientist's personal experience.
D.By giving an example of a scientific failure.
28.What do Paragraphs 2——3 mainly talk about
A.The history of scientificresearch.
B.The challenges faced by scientists.
C.The methods scientists use to share results.
D.The different focuses of scientists in their research.
29.What does the underlined word"foolproof" in Paragraph 6 most probably mean
A.comfortable B.dependable C.changeable D.unbelievable
30.What does the writer suggest about healthy disagreements in science
A.They result in perfect knowledge.
B.They often lead to different results.
C.They are necessary for scientific progress.
D.They show problems in scientific methods.
A simple and common way to water plants is to hold a garden pipe(管)and let the water fall down
directly on the plants and soil. This is a good choice that doesn't waste water. It can also help prevent plant
disease. But a garden pipe isn't the only way to water your plants.
The When and How of Watering
31. This lets the water go deeply into the soil before the weather gets too hot. If you water
late in the day, the water will just evaporate(蒸发)from the surface. If you water in the evening, the plants
stay too wet overnight.
32. If you water quickly every day, it doesn't help the roots, which can spread over 30
centimeters into the soil. Water the soil less often, but deeply. Be careful when watering very dry soil
because the water will just run off without getting into the soil. Water your plants slowly and make sure the
water is taken in by earth.
Collect and Reuse Water
33. Instead of emptying water out after boiling foods, keep it and reuse it to water plants.
Just make sure the water does not have salt in it. You can also catch and use rainwater.
Choose Native Plants
Most gndeners just think about which plants look good and the plants' sunlight needs. But watering
needs should be considered, too. Drought-resistant(抗早的)plants shouldn't be overwatered when trying to
keep thirstier plants watered.
It's also best to use plants that are native to the area where you live. These plants are likely to be
resistant to drought. 34. After that, they can live on just rainwater except for during times of
extreme heat.
A. They just need watering for the first two years.
B. It's also important to collect different kinds of water.
C. The best time to water your plants is in the morning.
D. How you water is just as important as when you water.
E. One way to help keep costs low for watering is to use used water.
How will you water your plants if there isn't enough water around

In a small village, there was a young boy called Dale. He wanted to be more confident.
Getting an education was not easy for Dale. His family didn't have much money and he was not able to do
what he wanted to do. When he tried to join the basketball team, the coach said no because he was too thin.
This made Dale feel very sad and bad about himself.
His mother was worried it might hold him back. She told Dale to join a public speaking club. She thought
speaking in front of people would help him feel more confident. So Dale often practiced speaking very hard
in the club. His first success in the club made him very happy. Over time, Dale became the best at public
speaking in his school and won many prizes.
Through his hard work. Dale learned something important: Talking clearly to people and sharing ideas was
not just a skill; it helped him believe in himsell. This new-found confidence helped him grow and be
successful in the future.

B.Best friends have a higher kinship coefficient than first cousins.
C.The kinship coefficient between two friends is 0. 0014.
D.Our best friend might be a distant family member.
21.In what way are best friends similar according to the text
A.Their sweat is similar.
B.They have a similar family.

This lets the water go deeply into the soil before the weather gets too hot.If you water late in
the day, the water will just evaporate from the surface. If you water in the evening, the plants stay too wet
The best time to water your plants is in the morning.(浇水的最佳时间是早上)符合文意,故选 C。
So If you water quickly every day, it doesn't help the roots, which can spread over 30
centimeters into the soil. Water the soil less often, but deeply. Be careful when watering very dry soil because
the water will just run off without getting into the soil.Water your plants slowly and make sure the water is
How you water is just
as important as when you water.(你如何浇水和你何时浇水一样重要)符合,故选 D。
Instead of emptying water out after boiling foods, keep it and reuse it to water plants. Just
make sure the water does not have salt in it. You can also catch and use rainwater.(煮完食物后不要把水倒
One way to help keep costs low for watering is to use used water.(
It's also best to use plants that are native to the area where you live. These plants are likely to
be resistant to drought. After that, they can live on just rainwater except for during times of extreme
They just need watering for the first two years.(它们在最初两年只需要浇水)符合,故选 A。
Collect and reuse water, and choose drought-resistant
native plants.。
