It started that first day in a kindergarten choir. Just as the session ended, its director, drawing me aside, asked, “Ian, will you stay for a few moments ”
“Did I do something bad, Miss ”
“Not in the least,” she replied, touching my cheek. “I would like to hear your voice alone; it sounded so lovely.”
Then, sitting at the piano, she said, “Sing this note for me. Good, now this one; now this one, will you ” And so I did, each note high, then ever higher, until I squeaked (破音) a little. At that point, she smiled, and said, “Well-done, Ian!”
The next day, I began to sing in front of a good many teachers. Each one liked me and my voice. A few cried, telling me how much they missed their work in opera. Soon, I attended lessons once each week. Though at times feeling tired, I learned, in order to continue to obtain the praise which made me glow inside, I had to earn it.
I edged towards age thirteen, I heard alto (中音) notes appear more and more often. Although I knew this change would come, I ached to stop it. The admirable beauty of my voice could not remain. Thus far, the tiny change remained detectable only to myself. Still, that change, which for some years I’d known would come, was now invading. In all likelihood, my boy soprano’s voice (童音) would change into a common one.
This evening I had my solo. I still couldn’t get rid of the fear. Might this performance be the final time of such significance If so, what then Singing is my wellspring. However, no matter what would happen in the future, I had to cherish every moment to sing. As I sang on, it echoed (回响) through the walls, bringing a silence of suspended breath. When I had finished, thunderous applause exploded. I could begin to let my voice evolve, not as a sacrifice, but as a step towards what was surely bound to be my next stage.

Among the roughly 40 million adults in the U.S. who have hearing loss, most don’t use hearing aids. This means they may be missing out on more than just good hearing. A new study finds that restoring hearing loss with hearing aids may lengthen people’s lives.
Dr. Janet Choi, together with her partners at Keck Medicine of USC, analyzed data from more than 10,000 adults with hearing loss who were aged 20 or older. All of them were surveyed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1999 and 2012 about their hearing loss and hearing aid use. Death data were also analyzed. “The group of patients who were using hearing aids regularly had a 24% lower risk of death compared to the group who never use hearing aids,” Choi says.
The researchers had theorized this would be the case given all the studies pointing to the negative impacts of untreated hearing loss. But Choi says they did not expect such a big difference in death risk. “We were surprised,” she says.
Prior research has shown that age-related hearing loss — if untreated — can take its toll when it comes to physical and mental health. And a recent study found restoring hearing with hearing aids may slow cognitive (认知的) decline among people at high risk.
This new study adds to the evidence of benefits. The findings do not prove that it’s the hearing aids that lead to longer life. It could be that people who regularly use hearing aids are also more likely to avoid isolation, remain more active or have reduced risk of falls, which could explain the increased longevity.
Given the benefits, Choi says it’s shocking how few people with hearing loss wear hearing aids regularly — just 12%, according to her study. And Choi says another striking finding is that, the people in the study who had hearing aids, but didn’t use them regularly, were as likely to die prematurely as those who never used them.
“So, if you have hearing aids sitting in the back of a drawer, not being used,” Choi says, “try them again.”
28.How did the researchers reach their findings
A.By referring to a popular theory.
B.By studying statistics from a large survey.
C.By comparing results of previous research.
D.By conducting a field survey in some hospitals
29.What does the underlined phrase “take its toll” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Take little control. B.Fill a huge gap.
C.Play an important role. D.Cause great damage.
30.What does Choi find surprising about the hearing-disadvantaged
A.Many are young people. B.Many suffer from isolation.
C.Many seldom use hearing aids. D.Many have cognitive problems.
31.What is the main idea of the text
A.Hearing aids may help people live longer.
B.It’s high time you cared about your hearing.
C.Hearing loss is more common than expected.
D.There’s no shame in wearing your hearing aids.
Following the announcement that the TSUTAYA bookstore in Xi’an, Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, is shutting down, the question about the sustainability of physical bookstores competing against new business models has once again aroused a heated discussion. While it’s important for physical bookstores to find a new way out, protecting cultural spaces in order to provide better customer service is essential for transforming trendy bookstores into sustainable ones.
As e-commerce continues to dominate our shopping habits, physical bookstores have tried to reinvent themselves as cultural and commercial centers - offering more than just books, but also space for coffee and social media snapshots (快照). Brands like SiSYPHE, Fang Suo Commune, and Yanjiyou bookstores have become popular, thanks to their aesthetic (美学) designs and diverse offerings such as cultural and creative products.
Indeed, it isn’t necessary for bookstores to remain stuck in the traditional model of only selling books, but some of these trendy establishments have gone too far into the kingdom of commercial entertainment, losing sight of their core mission of promoting books and fostering a literary culture. A bookstore should be a harbor for book lovers, in tune with China’s longstanding tradition of “making friends through books.”
Another challenge facing these trending bookstores may be a lack of attention given to book selection. That’s to say, they often fall short in offering a thoughtful, diverse range of books. It’s worth noting that it is not enough to rely on fleeting (转瞬即逝的) trends and creative merchandise. A bookstore must prioritize the integrity and cultural relevance of its book selection, and the space and activities should foster a genuine environment for cultural exchange and literary appreciation.
Ultimately, what matters most to customers visiting a physical store — be it a bookstore or café — is the quality of the products and the experience itself. By combining cultural aspirations with genuine consumer needs, businesses can better serve their customers. A strong focus on careful product selection and meaningful cultural services allows stores to carve out a unique identity and ensure their survival in a competitive marketplace.
32.What is the “heated discussion” in paragraph I mainly about
A.The approach to transforming physical bookstores.
B.The reason why physical bookstores are closing down.
C.The way to protect cultural space and customer service.
D.The competition between physical and online bookstores.
33.What do the bookstores mentioned in paragraph 2 have in common
A.They provide diverse services. B.They only focus on selling books.
C.They are dominating people’s habits. D.They are victims of e-commerce.
34.What should physical bookstores focus on
A.Service and commerce. B.Books and culture.
C.Promotion and entertainment. D.Media and literature.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Traditional Culture and Classics Need Our Full Attention.
B.Physical and Online Stores Both Have a Long Way to Go.
C.The Competition between Modern and Classical Bookstores.
D.Trendy Bookstores Need Preserve Cultural Essence to Boom.
How to Reduce Food Waste in Your Kitchen
Wilted lettuce, spoiled meats, uneaten leftovers and parts of vegetables that are tossed out during preparation are all examples of wasted food. When food gets wasted, so do all of the resources that went into producing it, such as water, land and energy. 36 Now, Use these strategies to prevent food waste at home.
● Make a plan. The first step in reducing food waste in your household is to assess what you have in your refrigerator, freezer and pantry to avoid buying food you already have. 37
● Know how to store. Properly storing food will help it last longer and taste better. The most important thing to think about when storing food is to prevent oxidation (氧化). For instance, cooked leftovers and fresh meats should be carefully covered and sealed. Most vegetables, especially those that can easily wilt (枯萎), should go in the high humidity drawer in your refrigerator. 38 This can make other produce ripen more quickly and potentially spoil faster. So store these fruits away from other produce.
● 39 Another big reason is that we throw out edible parts of produce — skins, seeds, leafy tops and stems—that can be incorporated into meals. Chefs are increasingly adapting this root-to-stem style of cooking and it’s something you can do in your own kitchen.
● Learn the labels. Date labels are typically a guide for quality and freshness, not food safety. Even so, many people toss out food that has passed its date label. Instead of routinely throwing out foods past the date on the label, people should evaluate the products before eating. 40 If a product looks good, smells good, tastes good and has a “best by” or “best if used by” label, it’s probably OK to consume.
A.Know about the reason.
B.Use all parts of the plant.
C.So use your best judgment.
D.After that, it’s about having a plan for every food item.
E.Some fruits release ethylene (乙烯) gas as they ripen.
F.The high humidity drawer is not suitable for the fruits that are soft and easily go bad.
G.It’s also food that could have gone to the households who lack access to affordable food.

It was a warm sunny Monday morning and the second week of school. Third-grader Travis Milton was so proud of the painting he painted over the weekend. His momma Lena wrapped it in a nice clean towel so Travis could take it to school to show his new art teacher. He carefully carried it to the bus stop and explained the large wrapped thing to his curious fellow students that it was his best painting. They all wanted to see it but Travis promised them he would show them at the end of the day. He wanted his art teacher, Mr. Mackings to be the first to see it. When the bus arrived at the Berkings Grade School, Travis carefully carried his painting off the bus and through the double doors.
He walked down the hall to the art classroom. Mr. Mackings saw him come in the door and said, “Hello, Mr. Milton. What do we have here ” Travis excitedly answered, “I painted a deer in the winter woods. It took me all day Saturday and part of Sunday.” Mr. Mackings said, “Well, let’s see it,” as Travis handed him the towel-covered painting. He removed the towel and handed it to Travis. Travis smiled and said, “My momma taught me how to paint from where the light comes from. All the snow is on the same side of the trees and the deer is.” Mr. Mackings cut him off and angrily shouted, “You did not paint this, Mr. Milton. How dare you come into my classroom and in my presence with an obvious lie!”
Travis was astonished as he started to speak but Mr. Milton threw the painting back, “You have earned an F in art, Mr. Milton. Never bring someone else’s work that you claim to be yours here again. I will not tolerate it!” Mr. Mackings pointed to the door and told Travis to get out of his sight.

Teams of 6 to 10 people spent 22 days sailing the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea to the finish line, in Genoa, Italy. That’s where the race ended, on June 19, 2021. Two classes of speedy sailboats raced in the event: the IMOCA and the VO65. Offshore Team Germany won the IMOCA class race. And Portugal’s Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team won the VO65 class. The Ocean Race Europe presented plenty of challenges. Teams were on their boats for three straight weeks. When you were onboard, all you do was race, eat, and sleep. During the race, the boats collected scientific data from the salty waters. The data is shared with scientists. It provides insight about how the ocean is affected by climate change. Scientists use the data to further understand and advocate the world’s changing environment and seas.

根据第一段的“Just as the session ended, its director, drawing me aside, asked, “Ian, will you stay for a few moments ”(就在课程结束时,合唱团的负责人把我叫到一边,问道:“Ian,你能留下来一会儿吗?”)”,第三段的““Not in the least,” she replied, touching my cheek. “I would like to hear your voice alone; it sounded so lovely.”(“一点也不,”她摸了摸我的脸颊,回答道。“我想一个人听听你的声音;听起来很可爱。”)”以及后文中她安排作者单独唱歌给老师们听等行为可推知,负责人对作者的声音有着敏锐的观察力,并且非常负责地对待每个学生的发展。故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据第五段的“Though at times feeling tired, I learned, in order to continue to obtain the praise which made me glow inside, I had to earn it.(虽然有时我会感到疲倦,但我明白,为了继续获得让我内心发光的赞美,我必须赢得它。)”
根据第六段的“I edged towards age thirteen, I heard alto (中音) notes appear more and more often. Although I knew this change would come, I ached to stop it. The admirable beauty of my voice could not remain. Thus far, the tiny change remained detectable only to myself. (当我即将步入十三岁的时候,我越来越频繁地听到中音的出现。尽管我知道这种变化迟早会来,但我却渴望阻止它。我那令人钦佩的美妙嗓音无法保持不变。到目前为止,这种微小的变化只有我自己能察觉到。)”可知,让作者在成长过程中感到不安的是他声音的不易察觉的变化。故选B。
27.推理判断题。根据文中最后一段的“When I had finished, thunderous applause exploded. I could begin to let my voice evolve, not as a sacrifice, but as a step towards what was surely bound to be my next stage.(当我结束演唱时,雷鸣般的掌声爆发出来。我可以开始让我的声音发生变化,这不是一种牺牲,而是向着注定将成为我下一个阶段的一步。)”可推知,尽管作者的声音将发生改变,但他会继续前进,把声音的变化看作是成长的一个阶段而非牺牲。故选A。

Death data were also analyzed.(南加州大学凯克医学院的Janet Choi博士和她的合作伙伴分析了10000多名20岁或以上听力损失成年人的数据。美国疾病控制和预防中心在1999年至2012年间对他们进行了关于听力损失和助听器使用情况的调查。死亡数据也进行了分析)”可知,研究人员通过分析一项大型调查的数据得出结论。故选B。
29.词句猜测题。根据划线短语前半部分“Prior research has shown that age-related hearing loss — if untreated(先前的研究表明,如果不加以治疗,与年龄相关的听力损失)”以及后半部分“when it comes to physical and mental health(当涉及到身心健康时)”可知,未经治疗的年龄相关性听力损失会对身体健康和心理健康造成重大损害。
根据倒数第二段的“Given the benefits, Choi says it’s shocking how few people with hearing loss wear hearing aids regularly — just 12%, according to her study.(Choi说,考虑到这些好处,令人震惊的是,根据她的研究,很少有听力损失的人经常佩戴助听器,只有12%)”可知,Choi认为很少有人经常佩戴助听器这一点令人惊讶。故选C。
根据全文内容,尤其是第一段的“A new study finds that restoring hearing loss with hearing aids may lengthen people’s lives.(一项新的研究发现,用助听器恢复听力损失可能会延长人们的寿命)”可知,整篇文章的主题围绕助听器可能帮助人们延长寿命的研究发现展开。故选A。

根据文章第一段中的“Following the announcement that the TSUTAYA bookstore in Xi’an, Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, is shutting down, the question about the sustainability of physical bookstores competing against new business models has once again aroused a heated discussion. (随着位于中国西北陕西省西安市的TSUTAYA书店宣布关闭,关于实体书店在新商业模式竞争中可持续发展的讨论再次引发热议)”可推知,这场热烈的讨论主要是关于实体书店在面对新商业模式的竞争中如何实现可持续发展的问题。故选D。
33.细节理解题。根据文章第二段中的“As e-commerce continues to dominate our shopping habits, physical bookstores have tried to reinvent themselves as cultural and commercial centers - offering more than just books, but also space for coffee and social media snapshots. (随着电子商务继续主导我们的购物习惯,实体书店试图重新定位自己,成为文化和商业中心 —— 不仅仅是卖书,还提供咖啡和社交媒体快照的空间)”,以及“Brands like SiSYPHE, Fang Suo Commune, and Yanjiyou bookstores have become popular, thanks to their aesthetic (美学) designs and diverse offerings such as cultural and creative products. (像SiSYPHE、方所和言几又这样的品牌因其美观的设计和多样化的商品而受到欢迎)”可知,提到的书店都有提供多元化服务的共同点。故选A。
根据文章第三段中的“Indeed, it isn’t necessary for bookstores to remain stuck in the traditional model of only selling books, but some of these trendy establishments have gone too far into the kingdom of commercial entertainment, losing sight of their core mission of promoting books and fostering a literary culture. (确实,书店不必固守只卖书的传统模式,但一些时尚的书店已经过于偏向商业娱乐,忽略了推广书籍和培养文学文化的使命)”可知,实体书店应该专注于图书和文化,而不是转向过度的商业娱乐。故选B。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文尤其是根据文章最后一段中的“Ultimately, what matters most to customers visiting a physical store — be it a bookstore or café — is the quality of the products and the experience itself. By combining cultural aspirations with genuine consumer needs, businesses can better serve their customers. A strong focus on careful product selection and meaningful cultural services allows stores to carve out a unique identity and ensure their survival in a competitive marketplace.

36.上文“When food gets wasted, so do all of the resources that went into producing it, such as water, land and energy.(当食物被浪费时,所有用于生产食物的资源,如水、土地和能源,也会被浪费)”说明食物浪费不仅仅是浪费了食物本身,还浪费了生产这些食物所投入的所有资源。
37.上文“Make a plan. The first step in reducing food waste in your household is to assess what you have in your refrigerator, freezer and pantry to avoid buying food you already have.(制定一个计划。减少家庭食物浪费的第一步是评估冰箱、冰柜和食品柜中的食物,以避免购买已有的食物)” 说明减少家庭食物浪费的第一步是评估现有的食物库存,以避免购买已经拥有的食物。接下来应该介绍如何对每一项食物做出计划。D项中的“having a plan”和上文“Make a plan.”
38.下文“This can make other produce ripen more quickly and potentially spoil faster. So store these fruits away from other produce.(这可能会使其他农产品更快成熟,并可能更快变质。因此,请将这些水果与其他农产品分开存放)”说明有些水果不适合和其他的农场品放到一起,应该与其他农产品分开存放。空处引出下文中关于水果存放的问题。E项中的“Some fruits”和下文中的“these fruits”相呼应,E项“一些水果在成熟时会释放乙烯气体。”相呼应,而下文中的This指代这件事,说明一些水果在成熟时会释放乙烯气体会让其他农产品更快成熟。故选E。
39.下文“Another big reason is that we throw out edible parts of produce — skins, seeds, leafy tops and stems — that can be incorporated into meals. Chefs are increasingly adapting this root-to-stem style of cooking and it’s something you can do in your own kitchen.(另一个重要原因是,我们丢弃了农产品的可食用部分——皮、种子、叶状顶部和茎——这些部分可以掺入膳食中。厨师们越来越多地采用这种根对茎的烹饪方式,这是你可以在自己的厨房里做的事情)”说明人们丢弃可食用的部分——如皮、种子、绿叶顶部和茎,而这些部分可以加入到餐食中。所以B项“使用植物的所有部分。”适合作本段的主旨句,引导读者关注到利用植物所有部分的重要性。故选B。
40.上文“Date labels are typically a guide for quality and freshness, not food safety. Even so, many people toss out food that has passed its date label. Instead of routinely throwing out foods past the date on the label, people should evaluate the products before eating.(日期标签通常是质量和新鲜度的指南,而不是食品安全。即便如此,许多人还是扔掉了超过日期标签的食物。人们应该在吃之前对产品进行评估,而不是常规地扔掉标签上超过日期的食物)”说明日期标签通常是对质量和新鲜度的指引,而不是食品安全性的标志。空处和前文为因果关系,说明日期标签通常是对质量和新鲜度的指引,因此人们在决定是否丢弃过期食品时应该做出自己的判断。C项“所以用你最好的判断。”符合语境。故选C。

67.Travis was shocked and heartbroken. A burst of sorrow swallowing him, he dragged his heavy legs to the classroom. Mr. Mackings’s misunderstanding weighed on his mind, making him absent-minded in class. It was a relief when the school bell rang. He staggered home as the dark clouds rolled across the sky. At the sight of his mother, so depressed was he that he failed to contain his sadness, bitter tears streaming down. He choked up as he told what had happened. Having learned everything, his mother took a long breath and said firmly, “Don’t worry, dear, I will clarify it.”
The next day, Travis came to school with his mother. The morning golden glow witnessed Mom’s narration, where she explained how deep love Travis nursed for painting and his devotion to this artwork. Only then did Mr. Mackings realize what a silly mistake he had made. A gleam of deep guilt consuming him, he genuinely reached out his hands, “I am terribly sorry. May I have the honor to have your painting back ” A bright smile bloomed as Travis handed it back. The following years saw his incredible progress in painting under his teacher’s guidance. It was this accident that truly bonded them and pushed Travis to go further on the painting road.
