Small traditions bring big confidence. What do you usually do before exams Are there any special traditions in your country 4 replies Li Yan (Henan) 6 April
In the UK, there are many fun traditions before exams. In some countryside areas of England, people may see "wishing trees" with coins hammered (锤入) into the bark (树皮). Students believe this will bring good luck from the "tree spirits". At the University of Oxford, there is a custom of touching the "Kissing Stone", an old stone inside the chapel (教堂), to get good luck. Also, some students avoid eating chicken before exams. The reason is simple and funny: "You don’t want to be a chicken and get scared during the exam!" Like Comment Jamal Carter (UK) 6 April
In South Korea, we give our friends sticky rice cakes and taffies (太妃糖) before exams. This is because the word "stick" sounds like "pass" in Korean. People believe that eating sticky food helps students "stick" to success and pass their tests. It is a way to show support and wish each other good luck. I remember when my best friend had a big test, I bought his favorite sticky rice cakes to make him happy. This tradition makes us feel warm and strong before exams. Like Comment Min-joon Kim (South Korea) 7 April
We eat kaya toast with runny eggs for breakfast—the yellow yolk (蛋黄) means "golden scores" At schools, seniors give juniors "lucky pencils" wrapped in red string. Some families visit the local temples to rub the Buddha’s belly. My secret I arrange all my highlighters in rainbow order while whispering "A-hah!" three times fast! Like Comment Priya Lim (Singapore) 8 April
In Istanbul (伊斯坦布尔) , we have special exam traditions! Before tests, students drink "exam tea" made with apple and cloves (丁香). We tap our heads twice like knocking on doors, saying "Bilgi gelsin!" (Let knowledge come!). The most important rule Always enter the exam hall with your right foot first—stepping in with your left foot means bad luck! Like Comment Emre Yilmaz (Turkey) 8 April

Jordan had his eye on a scoring record. Jordan took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. Maybe today I’ll make history, he thought.
The city’s youth basketball league was holding a celebration. Today’s championship game marked 50 years since the league’s first title game (冠军争夺赛).
Before the game, Jordan looked over a special program. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers.
Jordan stopped when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. "Devin, look!" he said to his friend, "You see who has the all-time record My dad! Twenty-four points. But he never told me that."
"Twenty-four points," Devin said. "That’s great."
Jordan’s best was 19 points. He was the league’s top scorer.
When his parents showed up at the gym, Jordan brought the program over to them.
His dad laughed. "I had quite a game that day," he said. "But look at the score. I prefer to trade all my points for a win."
Jordan hadn’t noticed that his dad’s team had lost by one point.
"That was a great group of teammates," Dad said. "I’m still friends with a lot of them."
As game time came near, Jordan slapped hands with his teammate Tara and then started to warm up. The courts filled up quickly.
Jordan felt strangely calm. He’d played so many games in this gym that it was like his own home. Jordan had led his team to a victory over the Lions last season. Why shouldn’t today be like that
Jordan grew even more confident when he hit the first 2 shots (投篮).
The Lions called a break. Jordan ran to the bench and jumped up and down with excitement.
"Great start," Coach said. "But those guys are tough. They’ll come back on us."
He was right. By half time, the Lions had pulled ahead, 27-24.
Jordan looked up at his parents. His dad nodded and called, "Great work!"
But Jordan didn’t feel quite as confident as he had before.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second half, with neither building a lead.
Eleven seconds left. The scoreboard was clear: LIONS 51. BADGERS 51.
Coach told Jordan to bring the ball up the court. "Look for Devin inside, but take the shot if you’re open," he said.
Jordan glanced at his dad again. His dad pointed to Jordan, then held up two fingers on one hand and three fingers on the other.
"Me " Jordan mouthed.
Dad nodded. Jordan had scored 23 points. Another basket would break the record. And it was the right time to do it!
Jordan ran right, then left, but he was still a long way from the basket.
The viewers started counting the seconds. "Four... three... two."
Jordan rose to shoot. As the Lions rushed toward him, he passed the ball to Devin—wide open near the basket.
Devin turned and shot. The ball fell cleanly through the net for the winning points.
"Yes!" Jordan shouted. After celebrating with his team, he ran to hug his parents. "You still have the record," he told his dad.
Dad smiled. "You have something more important. A championship. And great teammates. Congratulations on your history!"

Children have an unbelievably curious mind. They explore new things for no other reason except that they just desire (渴望) to know. But as kids grow, they often fall into fixed thinking patterns. George Land, a researcher from NASA, studied 1, 600 children, testing their creative potential and curiosity levels at age 5, 10, and 15. The first time these kids took the test, 98% scored the highest possible score. Five years later, only 30% of them scored well. For the third time—by then in high school—only 12% of the kids did well.
This dramatic decrease in curiosity could be caused by their increase in knowledge, according to George Land. Once they feel like there’s no gap (缺口) between what they know and what they want to know, they just stop acting curious. Curiosity, it seems, gets unlearned as people age. But why should we care
Research shows that allowing our curiosity to be piqued can be very good for our mind. For example, when presented with an interesting puzzle that doesn’t have a clear answer, your brain is highly activated—it gets ready for learning and becomes more creative in handling related tasks. Lit by curiosity, the mind sharpens its focus and gains a fresh perspective (角度).
In education, curiosity serves as a stepping stone to academic (学术的) success. For one thing, it boosts memory. A study in Neuron finds that when participants are highly curious about a fact, they are 30% more likely to remember it. Curiosity also builds patience. A study from Duke University shows that curious people are more willing to wait for the solution to a puzzle, while less curious people always rush through tasks, missing opportunities for deeper learning.
The benefits of curiosity do not end here. Greater curiosity can make people more open to hearing others’ opinions, even if they differ from their own. This openness is key to productive disagreements and helps avoid problems like groupthink, where poor decision-making happens because people don’t consider different viewpoints.
Ready to do more to develop your curiosity The good news is that low levels of curiosity don’t mean your curiosity is just gone. In fact, you can actively train your curiosity. One effective way is to ask yourself questions and write them down and find the answers later. This simple step of finding gaps in your knowledge naturally inspires more curiosity.
We all start out curious. It’s our choice to be curious or not. As physicist Richard Feynman wisely said, "Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough." And with the proven benefits, you may be surprised where curiosity leads you.
37. According to the passage, some people stop being curious because ______.
A. they develop a more open mindset as they age
B. they try to focus on their work rather than the mind
C. their knowledge increase weakens their desire to know
D. their study interest drops after getting poor scores at school
38. The word "piqued" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. tested B. raised C. explained D. received
39. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with
A. Less curious people often suffer more from memory loss.
B. High curiosity pushes people to look for quick solutions.
C. Curiosity allows healthy disagreement within a group.
D. Curiosity can be improved by remembering knowledge.
40. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. To prove the possibility of training curiosity.
B. To encourage people to restore their curiosity.
C. To show how curiosity leads to academic success.
D. To explore different reasons for developing curiosity.
