Despite being born without hands, 12-year-old Aubrey Sauvie has never let limitations hold her back. From mastering martial arts (武术) to expressing herself through art, she advances bravely in a world that often prioritizes physical ability. However, her passion for drumming presented a special barrier: how could she hold the drumsticks without slipping out
Aware of Aubrey’s problem, her band director proposed her for Tech Engineering for Kids, a program which is run through a junior-level engineering course of the Tennessee Tech University. It involves students working in teams to design a form of custom assistive technology for children with special needs. Up to now, they have created toys and devices for children with sensory disorder.
Learning about Aubrey’s story, a team of ten engineering students of the program decided to create 3D-printed prostheses (义肢) specifically designed for drumming. They would send a certain design to Aubrey, who would then provide feedback, like “I think this is good, but it's a little bit long. Could it be shortened ’ or “It’s a little bit hot on my arm. Could you potentially, like, make it a little bit more breathable ” The team created about six iterations of the prostheses until they were satisfied with the final product, which was not only hard-wearing but also flexible, allowing for drumstick attachments on both arms. This innovation not only improved sound quality but also provided the flexibility needed for advanced drumming techniques.
Aubrey was very grateful for this technical solution. “I was really excited that I was going to be able to use the new prostheses and try them out,” she remarked. “They are becoming a very useful and resourceful tool to help me with my drumming.” With her newfound drumming freedom, Aubrey sets her sights on mastering a full drum set. Meanwhile. Tech Engineering for Kids readies itself to extend its reach, bridging the gap between limitations and ambitions through technology.
4. What troubles Aubrey a lot
A. Lacking passion for sports. B. Owning no talent for music.
C. Inaccessibility to expert training. D. Inability to operate an instrument.
5. What is Tech Engineering for Kids intended to do
A. Offer engineering courses. B. Design sustainable devices.
C. Create personalized adaptive tools. D. Improve overall users’ experience.
6. Which can replace the underlined word “iterations” in Paragraph 3
A. Uses. B. Versions. C. Materials. D. Kinds.
7. What does the text mainly tell us
A. Limitation brings down people’ creativity.
B. Ambition fuels the desires of the disabled.
C. Science breaks down the barriers among people.
D. Technology empowers people to pursue dreams.
C
Arm wrestling (扳手腕) was one of my favorite ways of playing with my brothers growing up. It allowed my younger brother and me to test our strength without getting tackled. I also put up a good fight when arm wresting with my older brother and his friends. Their greater strength and experience made the challenge even more interesting. Every match seemed to end in a good laugh, no matter who won.
Now I’m a scientist who studies animals in the wild. I have seen that playing is a great way to socialize; there is so much more to play than fun and games. When humans and other animals play, they are building trust with siblings and friends. They learn how far they can push their partners before anyone becomes angry or physically hurt. That’s called “testing boundaries.”
Older playmates may self-handicap, appearing to be less competent than they really are to help younger players learn skills and explore their abilities. Play offers a safe space, where everyone knows the rules and can experiment with new ways to move, think, and respond to others.
Over the past 30 years, I’ve learned a lot about play by watching young male elephants test their strength through sparring (拳击) games with their friends and superiors. Group sparring matches are common at sunset, when several different elephant families show up at the water hole to drink.
After the initial excitement of the arrival and a good long drink, young males slip away from the sides of their watchful moms and aunts to form sparring rings. An elder sister makes sure that the playing doesn’t get out of hand, so she is ever present with a trunk on the back or over the head to calm the enthusiasm. That way, the younger males don’t end up on the bottom of the pile.
Watching young elephants spar reminds me that play should be part of our everyday schedule — the less structure, the better.
8. What does the author want to say by mentioning his/her childhood experience
A. Winning is not the true meaning of play. B. Children prefer to play traditional games.
C. Play is essential in children’s development. D. Arm wrestling is a safe way to test strength.
9. What benefit of play does the author emphasize
A. It brings fun. B. It enables boundary breaking.
C. It settles conflicts. D. It develops socializing skills.
10. How do older playmates help the younger to learn during playtime
A. By pretending to be weaker. B. By warning them of risks.
C. By testing their competence. D. By teaching necessary skills.
11. How would the author describe the elephant’s sparring games
A. Safe and fair. B. Not strictly controlled.
C. Well-organized. D. Highly competitive.
D
Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory. A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning.
Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning.
Participants — 72 healthy male and female adults — were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised. Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested.
Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately. Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned.
According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer. Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning. I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning.
12. What did the new study aim to explore
A. When exercise is best for learning. B. What biochemicals are good for health.
C. How brainwaves should be measured. D. Which area of the brain is the most active.
13. What were all the participants asked to do during the experiment
A. Train on bicycles. B. Do mathematics exercises.
C. Play computer games. D. Watch films about nature.
14. Why did the participants return to the lab two days later
A. To do a medical examination. B. To have their memory tested.
C. To get their workouts recorded. D. To finish their previous tasks.
15. What might the author’s marathon running prove
A. The findings of the study are reliable. B. Long-distance runners are often smart.
C. Studies on the marathon are not enough. D. Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain.

When parents are on their phones a lot, what will happen to their kids Parents who stare at their screens instead of talking to their kids aren’t just modeling poor behavior, but they could be preventing their children's language development, a new study found.
Parents who use screens more have children who use screens more. And those children have a lower talent in grammar and vocabulary. When screens are in use, either by a parent or a child, there is less talking, teaching and reading in house-holds. ___16___
What’s more, when kids watch screens with their parents, the study found it doesn’t help their language skills. ___17___ For example, kids ages 24 to 30 months learn new verbs when they are taught through a live interaction or even video chat, but not by watching a video, according to a September 2023 study.
The study suggests parents should try not to spend too much time on devices when they are with their children. ___18___ Try to spare a few minutes – start with 15 minutes a day if it seems really hard-where your phone is truly out of sight, out of mind. It helps model good practices for your kids.
Parents are also advised to re-evaluate whether they need to be responsive to everything that comes through on their phones in real time. We live in a world where everything seems urgent but usually actually isn't. ___19___ It’s simply not possible.
___20___ It’s never too late to repair. Spend some extra time reading together or in a no-phone zone like the dinner table. By caring about your kid’s development and looking into tips like these, you are already doing a great job.
A. We don’t actually need our phones all the time.
B. It is an easy way to calm children down or occupy them.
C. Avoid checking your phone instead of hanging out with your friends.
D. And this may be a reason for the lower grammar skills and vocabulary.
E. Try not to put pressure on yourself to respond immediately to everything.
F. Another research also suggests younger children don’t learn well from screens.
G. But parents shouldn’t overstress if they or their child have spent much time on screens.

It was New Year’s Day. I made a resolution to find my stray (走失的) dog, Puppy-Rocky. In the morning, I could hear icy rain knocking the windows. I said a quick prayer for Puppy-Rocky. He was out there somewhere in the storm, and I could just feel it. Sure, it had been three months since he’d gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles (奇迹).
That fall, Puppy-Rocky, my sweet dog, had disappeared from my parents’ house in California. He had been staying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and worked in New York City. I was staying with friends until I signed my lease (租约) on a new place. Puppy-Rocky had gotten out of my parents’ house two days before I was set to fly back home to pick him up.
My mom and I spent that entire visit searching for him. Mom was the family’s resident “realist”, which meant she spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “He’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found him,” she said. I rolled my eyes. Mom always supported me, but this time she doubted. She could have done with a little more faith!
Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I believed I’d see my Puppy-Rocky again. His barks never faded away. He’d been homeless when I first met him, a naughty little dog that had survived all on his own. If any dog could do the impossible, it was my Puppy-Rocky. Even after I returned to New York City without him and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we’d be reunited.
Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search. I grabbed Puppy-Rocky’s carrier, loaded it into the car, and then asked my mom to drive me to the shelter for the homeless dogs, hoping he’d been found.
“Dave, you have to be realistic,” my mom said as we headed to the garage. “He’s been gone too long. You’re not going to find him.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Don’t you believe in New Year miracles ” I asked.

“Don’t you believe in New Year miracles ” I asked. Rolling the eyes, Mom climbed into the driver’s seat, mumbling to herself, “There’s just no way. You’re not going to find him. Be realistic.” “Mom! It’s my Puppy-Rocky! Promise! I’m sure I will see him again!!!” I kept yelling on the way to the shelter. Upon arriving there, we walked through rows of cages from room to room. I carefully examined dogs of all colors, shapes and sizes. None! All our efforts were in vain. Hopeless as it might be, I went on searching, followed by my mom, who had been trying to prepare me for the worst.
When I stepped into the last room of the shelter, a familiar bark came into my ears. Following the sound, I spotted a little dog wagging the tail towards me. It was him I double-checked it… Exactly, my Puppy-Rocky! It was bonier than ever before. Excited tears welling up, I immediately opened the cage door. He jumped into my arms as usual. I held him closely as Mom looked on, mouth wide open. It was indeed the season of miracle: three months after separation, we reunited. Puppy-Rocky’s return did let me, and especially my mom, firmly believe: we can do with more faith!
