①I remember a time when I went shopping on my first visit to Hong Kong. I changed my view to myself during this experience.
②Coming from cold and cloudy England, I prepared for the sun and dressed in a T-shirt and a short skirt. Not having much chance to enjoy the sun in the UK and having naturally fair skin, my legs were very white. In England, this is not a fashionable look at all. Most women spend every sunny day out in the suit trying to get darker skin. The darker the skin, the better the look. I have tried to get darker but nothing works for me!
③ As I walked around one shop, two shop girls didn’t take their eyes off me the whole time, talking quietly to each other in Chinese. I began to feel uncomfortable and asked my friend if we could leave. After we left the shop, she asked me what was wrong. I complained about the shop girls being very rude and always looking at my legs. I was embarrassed (尴尬) that they were talking about my white skin. My friend laughed, “They weren’t laughing at you. They were saying how nice your legs are. Many Chinese women want to have white skin like yours. In fact, there are many beauty products in the shops to make skin whiter and a lot of money is spent on them.”
④It just goes to show that we are never happy with what we have. The grass is always greener on the other side. If the women of the West and East thought the same way, western women wouldn’t spend so much money on cream that makes skin darker and women from the East wouldn’t need to use cream that makes skin whiter.

Do you have a good memory (记忆) Maybe your memory is better than all of your friends. But if you think you have a better memory than a chimpanzee’s (黑猩猩). Well, you may be wrong!
Tetsuro Matszawa, a scientist from Kyoto University, Japan has showed how chimpanzees have far better memories than people.
How do chimpanzees have better memories than us Scientists tested four chimpanzees and people. They showed them five numbers on a computer screen. Chimpanzees and people had to remember the numbers correctly. But to make it hard, the numbers disappeared (消失) after 0.7 second. Then they changed the time to 0.2 second. When people began to make mistakes, the young chimpanzees still did very well.
“After many tests, we find that chimpanzees have great memories,” Matszawa said, “You can do things to improve your memory. But you will never be a match for them.”
Why do they have better memories We share 98.8 percent of our DNA with chimpanzees. But during evolution (进化), we lost some of our shared abilities. As people learn new skills, like language, we have to lose some of our memory skills to make room in our brains. “To get something, we have to lose something,” said the scientist.
Chimpanzees need good memories to live better. When a chimpanzee looks up at the big tree and picks a banana, he can’t forget where he saw it when he beats other animals. That’s why chimpanzees still have better memories than us.

In the big cities with many chances, some young people are now looking at China’s countryside to realize their dreams.
Ren Yin, a 27-year-old young woman from Hongcun village in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, is one of them.
In 2017, China introduced the rural vitalization strategy (乡村振兴战略). It helps businesses, offers nice places to live and builds community spirit, making life better for people in the countryside. Ren wants to have her own cafe and help her country. In 2021, she left her teaching job, and just one year later, she started a cafe in her village.
Her parents weren’t on her side at the beginning. They thought this might not be a good use of her talents. But Ren chose to follow her heart, saying that’s what her generation (一代人) does.
Growing up after China’s reform (改革) and opening-up and the one-child policy, Ren and others of her age are very independent. They know they want to follow their dreams, said China Youth Daily.
However, starting a cafe is not easy. Ren is thankful for the support from the villagers who helped her find a place for her cafe and improved the roads. To attract more people, she designed her cafe to look different, with a strange shape and served unusual drinks like mountain walnut-flavored lattes (山核桃味拿铁).
But Ren knows it’s hard to keep her business going. So she hopes that when the nearby Jingshan Temple (寺庙) becomes a tourist attraction, it will help her cafe and other businesses in the area.
Facing the challenges (挑战), Ren doesn’t regret moving back to the countryside. “I think many countryside areas in China are like hidden treasures waiting to be found,” she said.
