Aunt Em ran to the door of the cellar and opened it. Dorothy picked up Toto and ran to the cellar door. Before she could climb down the ladder into the cellar, a great cyclone (龙卷风) picked up the house. It turned it round and round and round and then carried it high into the sky.
It was not very dark. Dorothy felt as if she were riding through the sky. She held on to Toto and climbed under her bed, where she stayed for several hours. Then, although the house was still moving, she fell asleep.
When she woke up, she did not know how much later, the house was on the ground. It was in a field full of flowers, and there were hundreds of beautifully colored birds flying about and singing. Not far away, there was a stream with clear, fresh water.
Dorothy was still under her bed. She got up and left the house. She was surprised to see three little men and a little woman walking toward her. They were very strangely dressed. The men’s clothes were white and had little stars all over them.
When they saw Dorothy, they walked up to her and bowed (鞠躬).
“Welcome to the land of the Munchkins,” one of the little men said. “We thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. Now our people are free.”
“I’m afraid you are making a mistake,” Dorothy said. “I didn’t kill any witch.”
“Your house did,” one of the little men said. “Look!”
He pointed to the house. Dorothy saw two feet sticking out from under it.
“Oh!” Dorothy shouted. “The house fell on her. What can I do ”
“There is nothing to do,” the little woman said. “The Wicked Witch of the East is dead, and the

76-year-old Mike Adkinson is getting ready to hit the road on Sunday, May 15, because he will be driving his tractor (拖拉机) from Bellingham, Washington State, to Perch Lake, Minnesota.
Mike’s brother Dan was diagnosed (诊断) with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in 2021 and his family realized they didn’t know much about this disease that now has no cure. The Adkinson family started learning about PD and were inspired (受到启发) to make a difference — that’s when the idea for a cross-country tractor trip was born.
“I know it may seem like a crazy thing to do, but we need more people to learn about Parkinson’s disease and we want to raise money so people like my brother can get the care and support they need,” states Mike. “If driving my tractor across country gets people to pay attention or donate, it will all be worth it.”
Leaving from Bellingham, Mike will head out on State Route 20 across Washington State which turns into US Highway 2 at the Idaho border. He will stay on US Highway 2 for the rest of his trip through northern Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota.
Mike and his tractor will cover more than 1,700 miles. Driving about 12 to 14 miles per hour, he will end his trip by mid-June if all goes as planned! Mike is hoping to meet up with people influenced by Parkinson’s disease along the way and has a goal to raise $50,000. Money raised by Mike’s tractor trip will help the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) provide important support services, education programs, resources, online wellness and exercise classes, innovative research and more.
“We are so impressed by Mike’s strong will and dedication (奉献) to help fight Parkinson’s disease. Raising money and awareness is a wonderful way to support his brother and the local PD community,” states Jean Allenbach, Executive Director, APDA Northwest Chapter. “The money he is going to raise will be put to very good use.”

Nature and culture are often seen as opposite ideas. What belongs to nature cannot be the result of human activities and on the other hand, cultural development is achieved against nature. However, this is not the only opinion on the relationship between nature and culture. Studies in the development of humans suggest that culture, whether taken as an effort against nature or a natural effort, is part of the development of the human species(物种).
Several modern writers saw the process of education as a struggle(斗争) against human nature. We are born with wild natures, such as eating and behaving in a disorganized way or acting selfishly. Education uses culture as a way to get us out of our widest natures; it is thanks to culture that the human species could learn to adapt(适应) , progress and raise itself above and beyond other species.
Over the past century and a half, however, studies in the history of human development have shown that the formation of culture is part of the biological adaptation. Consider, for example, hunting(打猎) . It seems to be an adaptation, which allowed humans to move into new and different areas, opening up the opportunity to change living habits. At the same time, the development of weapons(武器) is related to that adaptation-from rocks and stones to a set of hunting tools, and from hunting tools to rules relating to the proper use of weapons. Hunting also seems to be responsible for a whole set of bodily abilities, such as balancing on one foot. Just think of how this very simple thing is closely related to dance, a key expression of human culture. It is then clear that biological development and cultural development are closely tied.
The transmission of culture seems to be directly related to what’s in our blood. Just as snails carry their shells, so do we bring along our culture. However, culture is also passed on among people of the same time or among people belonging to different populations. We can learn how to make jiaozi even if we were born from Russian parents in Paris just as we can learn how to speak English even if none of our family or friends speak that language.
34.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Culture belongs to human nature.
B.Nature teaches humans how to adapt.
C.Humans are supposed to be well organized.
D.Education pushes the human species to progress.
35.Why does the writer talk about hunting in Paragraph 3
A.To suggest some possible ways of changing living habits.
B.To stress the importance of tools in humans’ struggle for life.
C.To show how culture develops as humans adapt to the environment.
D.To explain why there is a need to call for the proper use of weapons.
36.The word “transmission” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A.system B.spread C.start D.spirit
37.What is the writer’s opinion on the nature-culture relationship
A.Culture and nature are separate yet balanced.
B.Culture depends much on nature to progress.
C.Nature and culture are different but connected.
D.Nature follows the unwritten rules set by culture.

The holiday season is a time for celebration, gatherings, and delicious food. However, it can also be a challenging time for those trying to lose weight. But fear not! Here are some expert tips to help you.Eat smart
Saving up calories (卡路里) for parties or holiday meals is a mistake, says professor Victoria Shanta. As she explains, “You’ll show up hungry. Then you are likely to go straight to the dining table and start eating everything in sight!”Mix it up
“Devoting yourself to mingling (交际), not food,” says the Cleveland Clinic. “Don’t stand around the food table at a party. Instead, get out and talk with others. After all, conversation is totally calorie free! And offer to help clean up (since that burns even more calories). Be polite and be one of the last to eat — the food looks much less attractive after everyone has dug their paws in or if it’s been sitting out for a while.”Stay active
“Regular exercise is important to keeping a healthy weight, but motivation (动力) can be lacking (缺失) when holiday comes,” say the doctors at the Mayo Clinic. Choose and include fun activities into your holiday plans, such as ice skating with family. This way, you can add fun to your routine.Sleep to lose
The Center for Disease Control points out: “Going out more and staying out later often means cutting back on sleep.” That can make it harder to manage your blood sugar. When you sleep less, you’ll eat more and prefer high-fat, high-sugar food. Aim for seven to eight hours per night to guard against mindless eating.
54 to lose weight during the holidays
People gather together and eat a lot during holidays. It can be challenging to lose weight.
Eat smart Don’t save up calories for parties or meals, or it is 55 for you to eat everything in sight because of hunger.
