It is not easy to become a doctor in the United States. The first step is getting into a medical college. More than one hundred and twenty American schools offer study programs for people wanting to be doctors.
People can get advice about medical schools from many resources. One of these is the Princeton Review. The publication provides information about colleges, study programs and jobs.
The Princeton Review says the competition to enter medical schools is strong. American medical schools have only about sixteen thousand of openings. But more than thirty-two thousand students may try it. Many of those are women.
Most applicants contact more than one medical school. Some contact many. An important part of the application usually is the Medical College Admission Test which is called MCAT. The Association of American Medical Colleges provides the test by computer. It is offered in the United States and other countries.
The people who want to enter medical schools are rated(评定)on reasoning, physical and biological sciences and an example of writing. Applicants for medical schools need to do well on the MCAT. They also need a good record in their college studies.
Some students work for a year or two in a medical or research job before they attempt to enter a medical school.

A group of researchers has published new findings in Science on potential risks from the development of mirror bacteria — synthetic organisms in which all molecules (分子) have reversed chirality.
Scientists had begun early work toward creating mirror bacteria, and while the capability is at least a decade away, recent years have seen significant progress. The new paper finds that, if created, these organisms may pose significant dangers to humans, animals, plants, and environmental health.
The 38 authors working in nine countries include leading experts in immunology, plant pathology and so on. The publication in Science is accompanied by a detailed 300-page technical report.
While any threat is not approaching, the Science paper finds that mirror bacteria may pose serious risks. Immune defenses in humans, animals, and plants rely on identifying particular molecular geometries found in invading bacteria. If these shapes were reflected — as they would be uniquely in mirror bacteria — recognition would be impaired (受损的) and many basic immune defenses could fail, potentially leaving organisms vulnerable to infection.
The analysis also suggests that mirror bacteria in the environment may be able to evade (逃避) natural predators like phages, which rely heavily on chirally-mediated interactions to kill bacteria and limit their populations. Transport via animals and humans could enable spread between diverse ecosystems. Persistent and widespread environmental populations of mirror bacteria would expose humans, animals and plants to an ongoing risk of infection — a serious threat to humans and to global ecosystems.
The authors call for further inspection of their findings and conclude that, unless compelling evidence emerges that these organisms would not pose extraordinary dangers, mirror bacteria should not be created.
This paper marks a starting point for a broader discussion about the risks from mirror bacteria, including participation from the global scientific community, policymakers, research funders, and other stakeholders. Several of the authors on the paper are involved in planning a series of events throughout 2025 to inspect the findings of the paper and discuss steps that can be taken to prevent risks from mirror bacteria.

A.They are made up of mirror molecules.
B.Their molecules have opposite chirality.
C.They are active in a mirrored environment.
D.They can change their molecular structure.
29.What can we-learn about mirror bacteria from paragraph 2
A.They will come out very soon. B.They will barely harm creatures.
C.They will be made no less than a decade. D.They will have an effect in ten years.
30.What consequence might mirror bacteria bring according to the new findings
A.Natural predators can’t kill them.
B.Their molecules are the same as normal bacteria’s.
C.Immune defenses can’t tell their molecular shapes.
D.Immune protection can be impaired directly by them.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.The Creation of Mirror Bacteria
B.Mirror Bacteria: Risks and Global Responses

Taking antioxidant supplements such as vitamins C and E might make lung cancers grow bigger and spread by stimulating the formation of blood vessels within tumours (肿瘤), according to a study in mice.
One researcher involved has said that people with the condition shouldn’t try to avoid these antioxidants in their diet, but getting more than they need via supplements could cause harm. Martin Berg at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and his colleagues previously found that supplementing with the antioxidants vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine caused lung cancers to spread in mice.
To better understand how this might occur, Berg and a different team of researchers studied mice with a specific form of lung cancer and mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells. They supplemented the mice’s water with vitamin C, which the animals naturally yield, and vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine, which they get from their diet.
The researchers gave the mice increasing amounts of these antioxidants, which made the levels of these antioxidants in the mice higher than what was necessary. “Today in society, a lot of people eat healthily. They have some supplements, and then they also consume other antioxidant-rich foods like ginger shots and smoothies,” says Berg , “If you do all that, you could end up with the levels of doses — too much — that we’ re talking about.”
The researchers found that the higher the antioxidant doses, the greater the rate of blood vessel formation in the tumours. This was true for mice with the specific lung cancer and those with implanted human cancer cells. Increased blood vessel growth would probably lead to tumours growing and spreading, says Berg , but they didn’t study this.
Berg has stressed that people with any form of cancer shouldn’t change their diet on the basis of this research. “If you took away all the antioxidants in food, you would get sick for a range of reasons, such as vitamin deficiencies, and this would influence the cancer,” he says, “We’re focusing on increased doses above the required levels.”
32.What is the effect of antioxidant supplements on lung cancer
A.They help to reduce the risk of lung cancer.
B.They have little significant impact on lung cancer.
C.They prevent the formation of blood vessels in tumors.
D.They may cause the growth and spread of lung cancer.
33.What does the underlined word “yield” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Digest. B.Compose. C.Construct. D.Produce.
34.How did the researchers study antioxidants on mice with lung cancer
A.By implanting human cells only. B.By varying the antioxidant doses.
C.By comparing specific antioxidants. D.By keeping antioxidant doses fixed.
35.What does Berg emphasize about the antioxidants in cancer patients’ diets
A.Antioxidants should be completely avoided.
B.High doses of antioxidants can directly cause cancer.
C.Antioxidants are necessary but their doses should be controlled.
D.The study’s results should be used in adjusting the patients’ diets.

How to Overcome Jealousy
Everyone feels a little jealous once in a while — maybe someone was acting better than you, or maybe your best friend has been having much fun with a new coworker.
However, 36 they can actually cause a conflict between you and the person you want to be closest to. To save the relationship and get some peace of mind, take some time to sort through your feelings before you act on them.
Admit how you’re feeling to yourself before you do anything else. If you notice you’re feeling a little jealous, take a few minutes to check in with yourself. It’s perfectly normal to get jealous once in a while, so don’t judge your feelings — just let yourself acknowledge that’s what’s going on. 37 .
Don’t act on your jealousy while you’re upset. 38 . There’s nothing wrong with simply feeling jealous — it happens to everyone, However, feeling jealous doesn’t mean you have to withdraw from your partner, or accuse them of anything. If you can observe how you’re feeling without acting on it, you may actually feel your jealousy starting to decrease.
39 . Focus on your positive qualities. Jealousy can sometimes be rooted in insecurity and low self-esteem. However, it’s really important to remember that you re unique, with your own special talents. When you can embrace these, you’ll be less likely to feel jealous or insecure.
Remember that other people have problems, too. 40 . That can sometimes fuel jealous feelings, because you might feel like you want what they have, or that they can come and take what you have. Don’t fall into that trap, though, — other people often have problems that you never know about, no matter what their life looks like from the outside.
A.if jealous thoughts become really disturbing.
B.when you are always jealous of someone.
C.Take some time to cool off so you won’t say anything you’ll regret.
D.It can be really inviting to look at other people and think they have a perfect life.
E.Embrace yourself for who you are.
F.Reflect on the root of your jealous feelings.
G.Sometimes, just naming our emotions can help us start to get some control over them.
