Facial recognition technology (人脸识别技术) is widely used today. For example, police use it to search (搜寻) for bad guys. Most people use it to unlock phones or doors. It can also be used for payment.
Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection (探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising.
Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. There are two kinds of facial detection systems. One facial detection system can judge a person’s “happiness” or “fear” level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products (产品) of advertisements in the store. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses or not. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.
Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect information like people’s ages and five levels of feelings—from “very happy” to “very unhappy”.
Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers’ experience by showing products they might like or by offering them products at lower prices.
Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy (隐私) group, is one of them. She thinks the strange actions may cause something unfair. For example, a business could raise the price of a product according to a person’s age and feelings.
However, one store testing the technology explained they wouldn’t store people’s information like names or ages. And the advertising board system maker said it didn’t keep any personal information or record any videos.

Six-year-old Brooke Neitzel wanted a dollhouse. So she ordered one just by telling the family’s smart speaker what she wanted. Within days, a dollhouse worth more than $160 came in the mail. Brooke’s parents were surprised. They didn’t keep the dollhouse. But they decided to keep their smart speaker. They like other things it can do.
Like Brooke, you may have a smart speaker at home, like the Amazon Echo or the Google Home. Each smart speaker uses Wi-Fi. It is activated by voice commands. If you ask a question, the speaker’s digital assistant will answer. It can tell you about the weather or read the news. Amazon now offers voice shopping. Now we use computers to do many things such as shopping, reading news and even taking lessons. Some parents are afraid their children won’t learn well online. 43 . A report says online art teaching is even better than face-to-face teaching in some ways.
Taking online art classes helps save a lot of time. Parents usually take their children to art schools to have lessons. 44 But by taking online classes, children can just take classes at home with a computer, a mobile phone or a tablet computer.
45 For example, if a child doesn't draw a picture well, he has to start a new one with another piece of paper. However, during the online class, he just needs to start a new page by clicking on an icon (点击图标), because teachers and students usually use digital (数码的) tools and apps on the computer to draw.
More and more people have realized the importance of art education. Studies show that when kids are good at art, it’s more possible for them to do well in study. It’s because learning art is helpful in improving children’s ability of working out problems. 46 So, just turn on your computer and try an online art class right now!

Parents can do something to help decrease bad effects (影响) of TV and the Internet. They can pay attention to the type of programme and limit (限制) children’s screen time. Here are some ways:
Choose programs for children to watch. Always plan what children will watch. Give choices between 2 good programs for their children. Limit screen time to 1 or 2 hours a day for children older than 2 years old.
Turn to educational (教育的) shows such as the Discovery Channel, Learning Channel, and History Channel. Watch programs with children, talk about what happened on the show and talk about what was good or bad about the programme.
Parents should be a good example to their children by limiting their own screen time. When the daytime programs are not good for children, try other activities like reading.
Plan other fun activities for children, so they have choices instead of screen time. Try a trip to the park, a festival, a playground, or a visit to a friend’s house instead.

Our lives have become more digital (数字的) in the modern world. We can study, find information and talk with friends through computers and phones. However, spending a lot of time working, reading, texting and gaming through digital devices (数字设备) is bad for our eyes.
According to the American Optometric Association, 70 to 75 percent of computer workers have eye problems.
Digital eyestrain (数字视疲劳) is one of the most usual problems. People with digital eyestrain may get headaches, dry and red eyes, eye pain and other problems.
These problems have started to grow among children. “Children get mobile phones at younger ages and are using them very often during the day,” Sarah Hinkley, spokeswoman (女发言人) for the American Optometric Association, told USA Today.
The good news is that there are many things you can do to lower digital eyestrain. When using a computer, first sit in your chair and reach out your arm. Your hand should rest comfortably on the screen, as if you’re high-fiving the screen. Increase text size until your eyes feel comfortable.
When you are using a mobile phone, keep it at least 30cm from your eyes and just below eye level. Try not to use it under sunlight.
Remember to take a 20-20-20 break: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second rest and look at something 20 feet (about 6 meters) away.

The media landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past few decades. Traditional media, such as newspapers, radio, and television, once dominated how people consumed information and entertainment. However, with the rise of the internet and digital technology, these platforms now face unprecedented challenges. According to recent statistics, the global digital media market is expected to reach $350 billion by 2025, while print media continues to decline, with newspaper circulation dropping by nearly 50% since the early 2000s.
Digital media has revolutionized how content is created, distributed, and consumed. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become primary sources of news for many users, especially younger generations. These platforms enable instant sharing of information, allowing news to spread virally within minutes. However, this speed has also led to challenges, such as the spread of misinformation and “fake news”, which traditional media outlets with established fact checking processes are less prone to.
Another significant shift is the rise of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, which have transformed how people watch television and movies. Unlike traditional broadcast networks, these services offer on-demand content, allowing viewers to watch what they want, when they want. This shift has led to a decline in traditional TV viewership, with younger audiences increasingly turning to streaming platforms for their entertainment needs.
The advertising industry has also evolved dramatically. Digital advertising now accounts for over 50% of all advertising spending globally, surpassing traditional methods like TV commercials and print ads. Advertisers are increasingly leveraging data analytics to target specific demographics, making digital ads more effective and personalized.
Despite these changes, traditional media is not disappearing entirely. Instead, many organizations are adapting by integrating digital strategies. For example, newspapers like The New York Times have shifted their focus to digital subscriptions, while TV networks are launching their own streaming services. This hybrid approach suggests that the future of media may not be a replacement of old by new, but rather a coexistence where each platform leverages its unique strengths.
55.What is the primary reason for the decline of traditional media like newspapers and television
A.Increased production costs B.The rise of digital media and the internet
C.Decreased interest in news and entertainment D.Government regulations on media companies
56.Which of the following is a challenge associated with social media as a news source
A.Faster distribution of news B.Spread of misinformation and fake news
C.Increased engagement with content D.Higher quality of journalistic standards
57.What has contributed to the growth of streaming services
A.The decline of movie theaters B.The availability of on-demand content
C.The increase in traditional TV viewership D.The decrease in internet speeds
58.How has the advertising industry adapted to media changes
A.By focusing solely on print advertisements B.By reducing overall advertising budgets
C.By using data analytics for targeted ads D.By eliminating digital advertising
59.What strategy are traditional media companies using to remain relevant
A.Completely abandoning digital platforms B.Integrating digital strategies with their existing models
C.Relying exclusively on government support D.Ignoring changes in consumer behavior
As we spend more time on touchscreens, digital devices (数码设备) are not just changing our habits, but also changing our skills, especially in kids. Chloe Han is a teacher who works with young children. She has noticed that kids’ physical abilities are getting worse because they spend too much time on screens.
60 But many experts are worried that too much screen time is hurting kids’ fine motor skills.
Fine motor skills are the small movements we make with our hands and fingers. 61 Normally, children develop these skills by doing hands-on activities like playing with toys and making arts works. But now, kids often play more on screens than with their hands, leading to weaker fine motor skills.
62 They don’t help develop the finger movements and hand-eye coordination (协调) that hands-on play provides. Less physical playtime means that children have fewer chances to build these important skills naturally.
63 More children are in need of help with their fine motor skills for school and activities. Some are even hard to hold a pencil or zip up their jackets.
But there’s good news. 64 Fun activities like drawing and building with Lego improve their hand-eye coordination. These activities also improve the skills that can help children do better during playground activities.
Finding a better way between screen time and physical play helps kids develop strong fine motor skills while still enjoying the technology.
A.The digital devices are expensive for kids to buy.
B.The digital world can be quite fun and educational.
C.Using screens needs a lot of tapping and swiping (点击和滑动).
D.As a result, everyday activities are now a challenge for many young learners.
E.These skills help us do everyday activities, such as buttoning shirts and tying shoes.
F.Parents and teachers can help by adding screen-free playtime to kids’ everyday activities.

Now in countries like the USA, more and more children seem to get lost in a “sea of digital technology (数字技术)”. As they use digital technology too much, they are losing their ability to do simple things. They can’t make toys themselves with hands or help Mum cook dinner. And worst of all, they seem to be losing interest in communicating with others.
“I have talked with a number of teachers. They care about the increasing numbers of young pupils who can play with computers or smartphones, but have few or no skills to make things.” said a teacher. “Many pupils can’t communicate with other pupils but their parents talk proudly of their ability to use a computer or a smartphone.”
Instead of playing with other children, more and more children are choosing to stay indoors and quietly play on a tablet (平板电脑) at weekends and after school. How can a child grow up to be a very good artist if he doesn’t learn how to use a paintbrush and develop his painting skill How can a child learn to make friends as he gets older if he doesn’t learn to communicate with others at a young age
We can use a stone to either break a window or build a house. Digital technology can be used for good or bad. We shouldn’t blame the children. We should help them make right choices. It is certainly necessary for children to know how to use digital technology in today’s world, but more importantly, we should encourage them to develop social abilities which will do them good when they grow up.

“Digital switching” refers to the modern habit of swiping (刷) through online videos quickly. Researchers from Canada did some study of it.
Researcher Kay Y. Y. Tam began the study when she noticed she and many others often swiped through online videos. This behavior was connected with the “Boredom Feedback Model (无聊反馈模型)”, a theory she suggested in 2021. She said boredom comes from attention shifts (转移). These shifts happen when how interested we feel is different from what we expect. Boredom grows when things are not new or meaningful.
Tam said, “Since digital switching has lots of attention shifts, I wondered how it affects our boredom.” In her study, over 1200 people, many of them university students, first watched a 10-minute video. Then they saw seven short videos and could skip (跳过) some. In general, they skipped 8 times. They said they felt more bored and less interested when watching the long video. The same thing happened in another similar experiment.
These new findings show that boredom is increasing, although the world is filled with content we can access at any time. People who are bored often turn to their phones, only to find more boredom. Swiping on social media has also been connected with increased feelings of boredom.
Boredom can force us to explore the environment and to stop spending time on an activity that has little to offer. But if we always run away quickly, it’s like an animal moving from tree to tree for food without waiting to see if there’s any fruit. That animal might go hungry.
88.When do attention shifts happen according to Tam’s theory
A.When we swipe online videos.
B.When our wish is not satisfied.
C.When we feel interested in others.
D.When nothing is new or meaningful.
89.What did Tam want to find in her study
A.Why people like switching videos 8 times.
B.Why people feel bored when watching long videos.
C.How digital switching affects people’s attention.
D.How digital switching influences people’s boredom.
90.What does the underlined word “access” mean
A.Get. B.Share. C.Lose. D.Create.
91.What does the writer mainly tell us in the last paragraph
A.Animals are more patient than humans in finding food.
B.We should always search for new and exciting activities.
C.Avoiding boredom quickly can make us miss good things.
D.Boredom is totally useless and has no good effects on our life.
92.What could be the best title of the text
