In 2010, Brad Montague learned that a West Tennessee homeless shelter had a desperate need for socks, an item often overlooked because used pairs are usually too worn to donate.Without fresh socks, unhoused people easily develop frostbite. Determined to find a solution,Montague took the problem to a dozen teens at the middle school in Henderson, Tennessee, where he volunteered. Together they invented“Socktober”, a simple call for the community to donate new socks every October. The first drive ended with more socks than Montague's car could hold, and hand-delivering them while greeting recipients with“Happy Socktober!”became, he recalled, “an uplifting and emotional experience.”
Montague posted the results on social media. In 2013, he reinforced(推广) the idea with a“Kid President” web episode—— written and directed by Montague— and urged viewers to start local sock drives. The clip(片段) went viral, and participation exploded. Almost fifteen years later, Socktober is held annually in every U. S. state and in Canada, Australia, and India.Montague estimates“millions” of new pairs have been donated, stressing that“anyone can do it,” since socks are inexpensive, universally needed, and easy to share.
To sustain the movement, Montague's website targets nearby shelters and offers step-by-step tips for successful drives. Schools have become the engine of the tradition. Special-education teacher Rachel Taylor at Elmore Park Middle in Bartlett, Tennessee, has guided students to give roughly 10,000 pairs over the past eight years, calling Socktober“so much more than just socks—— it's love, generosity, and joy.” Eleven-year-old fifth-grader AndersonBrown agrees:“We should show that we care about everybody, no matter what.”
Reflecting on the movement's quiet power, Montague says, “There are challenges and darkness in the world, but there is also another story happening that involves the quiet work of thousands.”
24. What was the purpose of Socktober
A. To raise money for the local middle school.
B. To collect new socks for the homeless.

Zoologist-turned-artist Sara Cox lives near Durham Palace, where“deep, wooded air and wide open spaces” shelter the birds she studies and sculpts. Twenty years ago, she moved to the village of Hoboken and began transforming recycled wire into hyper-realistic birds——curlews, bitterns, blue tits, and other species now under threat. Each sculpture begins outdoors: she hides in tall grass or bushes, watching birds closely. She draws how their wings bend, how light plays on their feathers(羽毛), and how their muscles tense when they fly away. Back in her 200-year-old cottage studio she bends and weaves(编织) metal pieces, timing herself to log every step; one piece can consume weeks because“I can't waste a minute——I want to get it absolutely right.”
Accuracy is both scientific and emotional. With two science degrees, Cox volunteers at theWalter Trust's Low Barns reserve. She also spends time studying photographs, preserved birds in museums, and charts of bird body structure. “I need to understand what's beneath the feathers,” she explains, “so the sculpture feels alive and people sense the bird's fragility.” By revealing a bird's physical form, she aims to make people aware of how delicate and at risk they are. Her engineer father taught her to measure and construct; her mother, a potter, showed her how form conveys feeling. Together those influences produced a technique now celebrated nationally.
Earlier this year the Royal Society of British Artists selected several of her endangered-species pieces for the annual London exhibition. One of her bird sculptures sold for 2,700.The money from this sale helps improve the habitats for wildlife at Low Barns. Schools ask her to conduct workshops. Also, people visiting the nature area stop to look at her huge wire bird sculpture. They read the sign next to it, which shows how many of these birds have disappeared and suggests easy things people can do to protect them.
“All of our birds are precious,” Cox insists. By combining zoology with art, she turns cold statistics into visible, shareable emotion, hoping viewers will“look up, notice, and protect what's still there.”
28. Why does Sara Cox spend weeks on one wire bird sculpture
A. To perfect every small detail. B. To use more recycled metal.
C. To follow her father's plan. D. To win art competitions.
29. What does the underlined word“fragility” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Beauty. B. Weakness. C. Simplicity. D. Speed.
30. What does the author think of Sara Cox's work
A. It is largely profit-driven. B. It values speed more than accuracy.
C. It is inspired by museum displays. D. It unites science and artistic sensitivity.
31. What is the ultimate goal of Sara Cox's work
A. To train unique artist-scientists. B. To fund wildlife habitat projects.
C. To inspire conservation action. D. To document endangered species precisely.

Books and movies of the future might all start to feel the same if creative industries accepted artificial intelligence(AI) to help write stories, a new study warns.
Researchers employed around 300 volunteers as“writers”. These were people who didn't write for a living and their creative ability was assessed by a standard psychology test that asked them to provide 10 completely different words. The scientists then divided them randomly into three groups to write an eight-sentence story about one of three topics: an adventure on the open seas, in the jungle or on another planet.
They were also divided into three other groups: The first group received no help from AI,the second was given a three-sentence story idea from ChatGPT and the third could receive up to five AI-generated story ideas to help them get started. Their work was then evaluated by themselves and 600 other human reviewers.
The authors found that, on average, AI improved the quality of an individual writer's creativity by up to 10 percent and the story's enjoyability by 22 percent, helping particularly with elements like structure and plot twists(转折).
However, on a collective level, AI-assisted stories were much more similar to each other than those produced without any AI help, as writers“attached” themselves too heavily to the ideas suggested by AI.
Study co-author Oliver Hauser of the University of Exeter, UK, said that AI assistance creates a“social dilemma(困境)”. He further noted that while lowering barriers to entry for beginners can be beneficial, there is a risk that decreasing the novelty of art could have long-term negative effects.
The research also showed that, just as introducing pocket calculators to children too early could prevent them from learning basic arithmetic(算数), there is a risk that people might rely too much on AI tools before developmental skills in writing, music or other areas.
People need to start thinking about“where in my workflow can I use this tool to get the most benefit, while still incorporating my own voice into the project or outcome,” study co-author Anil Doshi of University College London said.
32. Why did researchers test non-professional writers
A. To train future writers. B. To prove AI's superiority.
C. To compare human and AI skills. D. To examine AI's impact on creativity.
33. What did the research find about AI-assisted creativity
A. It decreases personal enjoyment. B. It reduces collective novelty.
C. It boosts individual originality. D. It simplifies the plot structure.
34. What solution does Anil Doshi suggest for AI use
A. Avoid it in creative work. B. Balance it with personal voice.
C. Use it especially for beginners. D. Prioritize efficiency over novelty.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Use of AI in Writing
B. The Death of Human Creativity
C. Artificial Intelligence: A Writer's New Tool
D. AI's Creativity Trade-off: Gain vs. Uniformity

This year, I received an exciting message from the Science Center: out of nearly 2,000applicants, only 40 high school students were selected to take part in their famous summer program, and I was one of them! 36 .
For the two-week summer program, I chose to focus on a biology project. My research centered on investigating the presence and impact of bacteria (细菌) in different water sources—— specifically comparing wild lake water with home pool water to determine which was more harmful. 37 . Those are two fields I'm deeply passionate about.
The laboratory work was challenging but extremely rewarding. I remember the first day Iset out to collect water samples. The lake was peaceful, but beneath that calm surface hid something far less harmless. In contrast, the pool's crystal-clear water seemed almost too clean, and I wondered how the tests would turn out.
38 . The process involved culturing the bacteria, monitoring their growth and comparing the results from both sources. When the data finally came in, it was both shocking and enlightening. The pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. On the other hand, the lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria—— definitely not safe for drinking. 39 .
Once my experiments were complete, I poured all my energy into writing a detailed report. On the last day of the program, I had the opportunity to present my work to a group of15 mentors(导师). 40 ——I was not just a student; I was like a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world.
A. Back in the lab, I analyzed the samples
B. Standing before them, explaining my project, I felt proud
C. I hope to undertake a biomedical project at the Science Center
D. My time at the Science Center has given me a clear sense of purpose
E. These results highlighted the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose
F. The moment I opened that letter, I knew this was going to be a life-changing experience
G. This topic interested me because it combined both environmental science and public health

Every time we went to Lehman's store, I would rush straight to the same shelf. There it was: a brown little guy with a large nose that fit perfectly over my shoulder. I hugged the brown stuffed aardvark(土豚) doll tightly and whispered, “Hi, Artie.”
Last week, my mother finally noticed. “Why do you always disappear ” she asked at checkout. “Next time, your brother is going with you.”
Oh, no! My brother, Rich, was going to accompany me into the store. He would watch me and report everything to our mother.
Anyway, I wasn't going to give up seeing my precious Artie. So, when Rich and I walked into the store together, I advised him to get the daily groceries, since he was older. He agreed but said I shouldn't go off to look at the cosmetics(化妆品), as I wasn't allowed to wear them yet.
He needn't have worried about that; I was already heading toward Artie. There it was, awaiting me. I grabbed it and hugged it tightly. Just then, I heard my brother:“What in the world are you doing ”
“This is Artie,” I said. “I hug it every single time I come here. Don't tell Mom. I know we can't afford it, and I hope it doesn't get sold, because I just love this little guy.”
The look on Rich's face was unreadable, but I knew deep down that he wasn't going to make fun of me. In fact, a few times when he accompanied me to the store, he said, “Go on and hug your ugly animal, if it's still there, and I' ll get the groceries.”
One day before Thanksgiving Day, Rich was working with Dad somewhere, so Mom took me to Lehman's but waited outside. “You go in by yourself,” she said. “My legs are tired today. Just don't take forever, okay ”

根据第四段可知,研究发现,AI提高了个体写作的质量和可读性;根据第五段中“onacollective level, AI-assisted stories were much more similar to each other than those produced withoutany AI help”可知,从集体层面看,AI辅助创作的故事相似度显著更高。
根据最后一段中研究者 Anil Doshi的话“where in my workflow can I use this tool toget the most benefit, while still incorporating my own voice into the project or outcome”可知, AnilDoshi建议在创作过程中合理使用AI,同时保留个人风格。故选 B。
全文贯穿A1创造力的双重矛盾:个体层面提升质量(第四段中“creativity by up to 10percent... enjoyability by 22 percent”)与集体层面丧失独特性(第五段中“stories were much moresimilar to each other”)。
36. F 空处位于描述收到科学中心录取消息后,F项“The moment I opened that letter, I knew this wasgoing to be a life-changing experience”直接承接上文“I received an exciting message”,强调打开信件时的感受,与“exciting message”形成自然过渡,表达这一经历的转变性。故选F。
37. G 空处位于介绍研究主题后,G项“This topic interested me because it combined both environmentalscience and public health”解释了选择该主题的原因,下文“Those are two fields I'm deeply passionateabout.”
38. A 空处上文描述了收集水样本的过程,A 项“Back in the lab,】 analyzed the samples”自然过渡到实验室分析阶段,与下文“The process involved culturing the bacteria...” 故选A。
39. E 空处上文对比了湖水和池水的细菌检测结果,E项“These results highlighted the hidden dangersthat untreated water can pose”总结了结果的启示,强调未处理水的风险,与上文“shocking andenlightening”及具体数据相匹配,并引出后续报告撰写。故选 E。
40. B 空处位于向导师展示报告的环节,B项“Standing before them, explaining my project, I felt proud”描述了展示时的自豪感,下文破折号后内容“I was not just a student...”
根据下文“one by a family with young children: a girl and a boy and the other by twoadults”可知,餐厅里仅有两张桌子被客人“占用”。故选 A。
It's Michael Jordan!’”
故选A。
could hardly contain himself
根据下文“signed his name on a piece of paper”可知,小男孩最想要的是乔丹的“签名”。故选D。
故选A。
故选 A。
故填 who。
The book consists of 16 chapters,逗号后无连词,说明“cach... recipe”不是完整句子,而是独立主格结构,且 each与 feature为主动关系,所以用现在分词形式。
from... to... 故填 from。

invite sb. to do sth. 故填 to appreciate。
故填 an。

Text 1
W: This map I got from the visitor center is useless! I have no idea where our hotel is from here.
M: Let's just get a taxi. There are lots of them outside the train station.
Text 2
M: I bought some new amazing walking shoes. You can walk through a river in them and still have dry feet!
W: That's great! But make sure you wear them around the house before we go on holiday. New shoes can hurt your feet.
Text 3
W: Wow, that's a nice arrangement of flowers. Did they come from the garden
M: Yeah, Grace picked them from the garden. I thought they would make a nice subject for my next painting.
W: You do have a lovely hobby.
Text 4
W: Look, David has done some more drawings.
M: Wow, very colorful! He's so imaginative, isn't he
W: Absolutely. Look at these characters' faces. It's always so clear what they' re supposed to be thinking and feeling. I think that's really impressive, particularly for a six-year-old!
Text 5
W: I' ve got tickets for a play called The Ocean this weekend. Want to come I think you'd really like it.
M: I'd love to! It's based on a book by Nielsen, isn't it I borrowed it from the library years ago. It was great!
Text 6
M: Do you believe the year you were born really affects your personality
W: What do you mean
M: Well, I was born in the Year of the Horse. We' re supposed to be free-spirited, willing to take risks, and we love being with other people. That's pretty accurate!
W: Yes, that definitely sounds like you!
M: What about you You' re gentle, kind, and sensitive. Let me guess ... You' re a rabbit, right
W: No. I'm a goat! But the two are quite similar in some ways. Goats are supposed to be gentle, caring, and artistic.
Text 7
M: Can you take a look at this email from Amy
W: Sure. She asks for a meeting with you this afternoon. What's the problem
M: Well, I'm new and still on my test period here. What if she decides not to hire me, after all
W: Do you think that's probable
M: I can't think why. She always seems pleased with my work.
W: Well, if you' re confident that you' re working to the best of your ability in the team, then I don't believe she's going to fire you. Why don't you ask her assistant, Gloria, for more information
M: That's a good idea. I' ll call her now.
Text 8
W: Wow, I wasn't expecting that, were you
M: No! The weather report said it was going to be sunny all day! It was lucky you happened to have your umbrella in your bag, or we'd be wet through!
W: Oh, that reminds me... I should open it up to let it dry.
M: You can't open an umbrella indoors! It's bad luck!
W: Is it
M: Yeah! Or at least, it is where I'm from. Don't you have that belief in your hometown
W: No... At least, I' ve never heard of it in Japan. Why is it considered bad luck
M: You know, I'm not sure. I was just always told not to do it! Most British houses have quite small rooms, so maybe the idea began to avoid breaking things. But then, Americans believe the same thing, but it's interesting that American houses are usually huge!
Text 9
M: Are you going to be much longer
W: Sorry, I'm going as fast as I can! It took me so long to get back from the office. I should have got out of the taxi earlier and walked home.
M: It's not your fault that you got stuck in the jam. I'm just a bit worried about getting there on time.
W: What time are we due at the hotel
M: At 8:00 p. m. So, in about 45 minutes.
W: Okay, well... It only takes 20 minutes to get there, right
M: Yes. But as the traffic isn't getting any lighter, I think we should leave early. I'm planning on calling the taxi in about 10 minutes.
W: Is a taxi the best idea, with the road situation The subway might get us there quicker.
M: Good point. Okay, we' ll do that.
W: Now I just need to dry my hair. I can't go out with wet hair in this weather. It's freezing outside.
M: No, we don't want you to get ill! We' ll be off after you dry your hair.
Text 10
M: Thanks for coming, everyone. It's so nice to meet you all in person! This won't be a long speech. Ijust wanted to gather everybody together to introduce myself and tell you about my plans for the company. My name is David, and my father, Tomas, started this company back in 1980, the same year I was born. I joined the family company at age 20 when it became an international group. I' ve spent years learning from my father' s example. Those of you who worked for him before his retrement will remember him as a boss who cared about every employee's benefit and was always the first to arrive and the last to leave, Like him. I believe I can give my employees-a fair deal. However,I do have new plans and new goals. Firstly, I plan to change the office building in order to reduce our carbon footprint. Also, I' ll introduce flexible working hours for all employees, meaning you can now choose your own work pattern. I believe a good work-life balance improves time management and productivity. And that is of primary importance. That's all for today. Thanks.
