Mike Pavlik, a 51-year-old part-timer at Trader Joe’s, leads a double life. When he’s not at his day job, he serves as an amateur “detective”, working tirelessly for Twin Cities Stolen Bikes. This volunteer group, with its 11,000-member Facebook page, has become a beacon (灯塔) of hope for bike owners in Minneapolis.
One day, Pavlik received a tip about a stolen bike being sold online. He decided to take matters into his own hands. Dressing up in a sport coat, he posed as a potential buyer. Meeting the seller, he carefully noted the bike’s make, model, and markings, quickly confirming it was the stolen property he was after. When the seller asked for collateral (抵押品) for a test-ride, Pavlik managed to convince him otherwise and pedaled away with the bike, much to the seller’s later annoyance.
Pavlik’s actions are not just about recovering bikes; they’re about bringing joy to victims and justice to the wronged. “I love making someone who’s been victimized happy,” he says, “and I enjoy giving thieves a taste of their own medicine.”
Stolen Bikes NOLA, a similar organization in New Orleans with nearly 6,000 Facebook followers, also plays a crucial role. Clark Thompson, their spokesman, tells a story of a man who lost his $50 Walmart bike. For this man, the bike was his only means of getting to work. Thanks to the efforts of Stolen Bikes NOLA, the bike was recovered, and the man’s livelihood was saved.
These volunteer-run groups operate in a challenging environment. Bike theft has skyrocketed, especially with the rise of expensive e-bikes. In North America, close to 2 million bikes are stolen annually, causing huge losses to cyclists. Police, burdened with manpower shortages, often struggle to keep up. But these volunteers, driven by passion and a sense of justice, continue their mission. They search online platforms like Facebook. Their work is not without danger, but the rewards, seeing the smiles on the faces of reunited owners, make it all worthwhile.
24. Why did Mike Pavlik ride away with the bike during the test-ride
A. To test its performance. B. To return it to the owner.
C. To avoid leaving collateral. D. To gather evidence for the police.
25. What motivates Pavlik to recover stolen bikes according to the text
A. Seeking public approval. B. Gaining material rewards.
C. Restoring a moral balance. D. Chasing thrilling experiences.
26. What can be inferred about the work of these volunteer groups
A. It is risky and rewarding. B. It is easy and trouble-free.
C. It is unfulfilling and fruitless. D. It is uneventful and thankless.
27. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Bike Theft: A Serious Problem B. Theft Prevention: New Strategies
C. Police Shortage: An Urgent Issue D. Volunteers: Bike Recovery Heroes
C
Wayfinding — the art of navigating using the wind, stars, ocean swells, and other environmental cues — was how sailors from the Marquesas Islands first discovered Hawaii more than 1500 years ago. These skills are helping to restore a sense of pride in Pacific Island culture and heritage. But beyond that, wayfinding holds surprising relevance for the rest of us landlubbing urbanites, even if we have no intention of crossing vast oceans in a canoe.
Wayfinding is how humans have found their way for most of our existence. It’s what enabled the aboriginals, Arab nomads and Inuits to journey across monotonous (单调的) yet shifting landscapes of land, desert, and ice. Traditional navigation is about “using everything that’s provided to you in nature”, says Junior Coleman, who oversees sailing and seamanship in his own company. “We use all the elements and forces in nature — the sun, stars, moon, waves, currents, clouds and different animals. All of those.”
One of Coleman’s favorite cues, for instance, is the North Star. “It’s very reliable when you sail north of the equator. As you go towards it, it appears to get higher in the sky, so it kind of corresponds with your latitude. Another cue is ocean swells — waves formed by permanent weather systems, such as trade winds, that can travel hundreds of miles. Subtle changes in their refraction patterns can indicate an island and its location. But learning to “read” such swells is one of the hardest skills to master — navigators often speak of lying down on their canoes to feel, rather than see, such waves.
Coleman encourages everyone to give natural navigation a go, “I promise you, the brain just loves it,” he says, “there’s almost no other art that I can think of where you can exercise your brain in a fantastically positive way.”
28. What’s the function of the first paragraph
A. To put forward an argument. B. To introduce the topic of the text.
C. To make readers think deeply. D. To describe a historical fact.
29. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A. Junior Coleman succeeded in the journey across desert.
B. Nature elements provide everything people need in navigation.
C. Ancient people were good at finding ways in the wild.
D. Traditional navigation has played a vital role throughout.
30. How to use waves to navigate according to the text
A. By observing the height of the waves.
B. By noticing certain changes of the waves.
C. By following the direction the waves go to.
D. By lying down and listening to the waves.
31. What does Junior Coleman think of natural navigation
A. Mind-challenging. B. Potential-inspiring.
C. Time-consuming. D. Logic-strengthening.
D
Recent research suggests that using digital devices like smartphones and tablets might actually help protect brain function in older adults rather than harm it. A review of 57 studies involving over 400,000 people aged 50 and older found that those who regularly used technology showed slower mental decline compared to those who used it less. These findings, published in Nature Human Behaviour, challenge concerns that screen time causes “digital dementia”.
Scientists analyzed data from adults worldwide, with an average age of 69, who had taken cognitive (认知的) tests or received memory-related tests. Results showed no proof that a lifetime of using digital technology drives mental decline. Rather, they found that using a computer, smartphone, the internet or some combination of these was associated with a lower risk of cognitive issues. However, researchers warn that the relationship isn’t fully understood. It’s possible that people with more incisive minds are more likely to use technology, but tech might also provide brain-boosting benefits.
“We think the three Cs might be important: complexity, connection and compensatory (补偿的) behaviours,” Dr. Jared Benge told the Guardian. Digital tools could help people engage in complex activities and boost their social connections, both of which appeared to be good for the ageing brain, he said. The technology also allowed people to compensate for cognitive decline and function more easily, for example by using GPS to find their way or setting reminders to pay bills or take medicines, he added. He also emphasized that how devices are used matters. Passive activities like watching shows may not help, but mentally stimulating tasks — learning new apps, researching topics, or staying socially connected — likely play a positive role.
Sam Gilbert, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London, said the study showed “a clear link” between digital technology usage and preserved cognitive ability in older age. “The explanation for this link is still not fully clear: we cannot be sure whether technology usage itself preserves cognitive ability, whether preserved cognitive ability leads to more frequent use of technology, or — most likely — some combination of the two. Nevertheless, this work suggests that using digital technology can be good for brain health.
32. What can you learn about “digital dementia”
A. It refers to technology-related memory or thinking problems.
B. It shows the effect of digital devices on users’ physical health.
C. It implies slower mental decline by using technology regularly.
D. It describes a special phenomenon of employing digital devices.
33. What does the underlined word “incisive” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Brilliant. B. Sharp. C. Optimistic. D. Suspicious.
34. According to Jared Benge, why does using digital devices benefit the elderly
A. It can free them from their social contacts.
B. Digital devices usage can rid them of complex activities.
C. Using digital devices to learn new skills can stimulate their minds.
D. Digital devices usage can boost their brain function to a higher level.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Using digital device is a necessity to brain development.
B. Preserved cognitive ability leads to using digital devices.
C. Technology usage protects brain function and cognitive ability.
D. More research is needed to further explain the research findings.

How to Clean a House
Cleaning your house seems like a fairly self-explanatory task, but when you sit down to think about it, you might realize that you have a lot of questions. 36 We’ll work it down into a process that seems simple enough to tackle.
Decide how clean you want your house to be and how much time you have. 37 So, be honest with yourself about what you can do, how much time you have, and how motivated you’re feeling.
38 You don’t want to vacuum and then get crumbs all over the floor, or dust the bottom of something and knock more dust down when you work your way up onto the previously uncleaned areas. If you don’t have much time, start with the mess first and work your way to more serious things from there.
Make a checklist and a plan of attack. Know which rooms you plan to start and finish your cleaning in. This will help speed up the process and ensure you are not repeating your efforts, especially if more than one person is involved in the cleaning. You can follow the steps in the cleaning part in order. 39
Attempt to delegate tasks. If you live with other people, cleaning the house should not be exclusively your responsibility! You may have to take on leadership by setting up a rotational (轮流的) cleaning schedule, but it’s far better than having to do this backbreaking work alone.
40 For example, grade school children can pick up their bedroom floors, teenagers can clean the garage or bathroom, etc.
Once you get started, you won’t want to stop until the whole house is spotless and organized.
A. For example, how do you clean a toilet
B. Work from the top down, if at all possible.
C. Once you get started, make sure it is equal.
D. Make sure the tasks assigned are age-appropriate.
E. Should this really be something you do in everyday life
F. This way, you’ll have a checklist already written out for you.
G. This will help you decide how to set up your cleaning schedule.

My sister Lily decided to take up cycling to get fit after years of a sedentary office job. I wholeheartedly 41 her decision, knowing how important it was for her well- being. To show my support, I bought her a nice pair of cycling gloves and signed up for a local 20- mile cycling event with her.

Determined to improve, Lily made a plan. She decided to cycle to work three times a week and 49 to participate in more cycling events. When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby (电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs Lim was hysterical (歇斯底里).
“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. It had become a colourless mask. I had no time to lose. I pressed the bell in the lift immediately. The sound was surely deafening, but what other choice did I have Mrs Lim burst into tears. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar.

Dear Smith,
I am utterly delighted to learn that you will visit Beijing during the forthcoming Mid-Autumn Festival. It is with immense pleasure that I extend this introduction to immerse you in the splendor of this metropolis.
Located in the north of China, Beijing boasts a history of over 3,000 years, solidifying its esteemed position as one of the Seven Ancient Capitals. Given the city's traffic congestion, opting for the subway system seems remarkably efficient. Besides, there are many stunning tourist attractions, among which the Forbidden City, an imperial palace in China, Yuanmingyuan, the Garden of Gardens, and the Great Wall, one of the seven wonders of the world, are top must-see spots. As for Beijing cuisine, what invariably captivates the senses is Beijing Roast Duck, without a taste of which you can't claim to have been to Beijing.
Your journey here will prove nothing short of extraordinary. May it be filled with unparalleled joy and discovery!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
Several minutes passed, but no help came. The elevator was enveloped in a terrifying atmosphere, the dim light and deadly silence adding to our mounting fear. Mrs. Lim was a picture of despair, her body trembling as she continuously sobbed and gasped for air. Despite the fear that gripped/consumed/seized me, I assumed an air of calm, trying to comfort her with reassuring words and a gentle pat on her shoulder. I then turned to the lift doors, pounding and shouting for assistance, yet the only response was the echo of my own desperate calls bouncing off the cold metal walls. As time wore on, a chilling wave of fear crept upon me, my hair seeming to stand on end, my composure beginning to fall apart.
Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. "Help! An elderly woman in here!" I yelled at the top of my lung. The rescuers responded with calming words, instructing us to remain composed and assuring us that rescue was underway. Turning back to Mrs. Lim, I conveyed the good news, comforting her that we would soon be safe. After what seemed like ages, the door finally creaked open. A ripple of excitement and relief washed over me on seeing the firefighters. With her body shivering, Mrs. Lim wept with joy. We expressed heartfelt gratitude to the firefighters, who in turn praised me for my calmness and proper response in the face of emergency. Their praise, like a torch, left my boring day and the terrible experience in the lift behind and brightened up my world.
