When the midday nap (午睡) bell rings, Geng Xin from a foreign language school in Shenzhen pulls out the footrest, reclines (向后倚靠) on her specially-designed reclining chair and enjoys a nap with her classmates.
Since May 6th, the school has introduced these reclining chairs for students to take a nap during lunch breaks. The chairs are now used for their nap, and over 100 sets are provided for Grade 9.
“Before, I could only rest on my desk for a nap. My hands and neck often felt uncomfortable. Sometimes I even pressed my eyes against my arms, which was really painful (疼),” the 15-year-old Geng said. “Now, lying on this chair to sleep is so comfortable, just like sleeping in my own bed at home.”
For Wang Tingnao, the reclining chair has changed her rest habit. “In the past, I napped for at most 20 minutes. Now, with this chair, I choose to sleep for 10 to 20 more minutes,” she explained. She also mentioned that the longer nap helps her stay more focused in afternoon classes.
According to Xu Weimin, a sleep expert from Shanghai, taking a nap while lying down has both physical and mental advantages (心理和生理的好处). “It can relax muscles and improve blood circulation to the brain,” Xu shared with the media.
However, there has also been some worry about the reclining chairs. “Some students might lean back even during class, so it needs effective management (有效管理),” Chu Peili, an English teacher said. “But in all, I think it brings more good than bad.”
