Ida Nelson was enjoying in her sister’s sauna (桑拿室) when she heard the sound of a small airplane circling the nearby airport.
It was 11:30 at night in a small village with a population of 70, and she said, “Any time a planeflies over that late, you know something is wrong.” Nelson and her sister ran to the window, and saw the problem—the airport’s runway lights were out.
Nelson put on her clothes, and drove her car to the airport, where she found a local pilot trying to turn on the lights manually. But the lights didn’t work with his hands.
Normally, if you push the button 10 or 15 times, the lights will just light up. Not this time. Meanwhile, she and the pilot learned of the plane’s task: it was a medevac (空中救护) there to send a seriously ill local girl, to the nearest hospital, 280 miles away in another city.
Nelson had a plan. Driving her car to the end of the runway, she shone her headlights for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn’t enough. More light was needed, so she called nearly every home in the village—32 of them.
Within 20 minutes, 20 cars arrived at the airport, many of the drivers still in pajamas (睡衣). Following directions from the medevac pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway. The medevac, guided by the headlights, landed safely. The young patient was sent onto the plane, and the plane immediately took off. Her illness was never open to the public, but she has since been recovered.
Without them, the girl might not have made it. However, for Nelson, it was “quite a normal thing.”

Parents are often surprised at their children's ability to use technology. A five-year-old child may easily find and use apps on a smart phone. A ten-year-old child can move up through the levels of a video game easily. Their parents may think their children were born geniuses!
Natural geniuses, however, are not common. But your parents are right if they think you are smarter than them. Most children are born smarter than their parents. This has been proved on IQ tests around the world recently. These tests have shown that over the last 100 years, each new generation has become smarter than the older one. In other words, you are smarter than your parents and your parents are smarter than your grandparents.
This increase in intelligence is called the "Flynn Effect". It was named after James Flynn. Flynn is a university professor in New Zealand. He first noticed this in 1980. According to his research, with each new generation, average IQ scores would increase by twenty percent.
But why are people getting smarter Flynn and many other researchers believe this has something to do with technology. New technologies have further developed our brains. They have made us think better. So we may be better at completing the missing parts of a puzzle than our parents.
However, being smart doesn't make you wise. Wisdom comes with age and experience. A killer score on a computer game will not help you solve the everyday problems of life. For that, a smart kid will turn to the wisdom of his parents and grandparents.

Time and time again, I hear someone ask why anyone would want to keep an “ugly” building or a building that is dirty and clearly in need of work. I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle—an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover.
Take the Queen Emma Building for example. While people may remember that building being named as one of the ugliest buildings in town, the angle from which a preservationist will view the building is that it is uniquely constructed with an artistical brise-soleil (遮阳板) to block the sun. The designer used standard concrete bricks to form a decorative wall. Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removed in 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town.
Sometimes people remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “horrid” piece of architecture and can’t get over their anger, even when that building becomes an important part of our story. This is particularly true in San Francisco where many preservationists themselves dislike anything newer than the Victorian era. Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class. Should that history be wiped from our memories
Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying parts of our history—not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.
36.How do preservationists see buildings
A.They focus on their value rather than appearance. B.They pay great attention to ancient buildings.
C.They are devoted to repairing famous buildings. D.They prefer ugly buildings to beautiful ones.
37.What does the author think of removing the brise-soleil of the Queen Emma Building
A.It’s confusing. B.It’s pleasing.
C.It’s regrettable. D.It’s unbelievable.
38.Why were many Victorian buildings in San Francisco torn down
A.To wipe the history of the Victorian era.
B.To make land available for cheap housing.
C.To work off the deep anger of the working class.
D.To restore the architecture before the Victorian era.
39.What is the author’s intention of writing this passage
A.To introduce some buildings with historical value.

The foods that Australians like most are ham and beef with lots of salad. They also grow grapes and other 56 . They love all sports, but the game that they like most is Australian football. Because most Australians live near the coast, they also love going to the beach 57 swimming and surfing or just lying in the sun. Although it is December, it is 58 over here. The sun is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, 59 the middle of the country has no trees or grass, just rocks and sand. . . And kangaroos!
On the second day, we went horse riding. The horse that I rode was lazy, so I was left far 60 the others. But I enjoyed the slow and relaxing ride. Later this evening, we are taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home. It has been a wonderful trip.

Second, we should study hard and be creative. We should help each other and learn from each other. Third, we should take more physical exercise to keep our body and mind healthy.
