When I teach yoga, I usually announce “Phones off and at the back of the room” at the beginning of class. Recently, I forgot and had to whisper to a student texting during class to turn off her phone. She looked displeased but did so. But two days later, in another class, I met with resistance from a young woman who completely refused.
“But I’m on call. I might have to jump up and run out of class.”
“Then maybe this isn’t the best place for you to be tonight.”
That response got me an angry and unfriendly look. But when she came back the next week, there was no phone and she was much more present.
Present is what I’m asking my students to be. Present to themselves and their yoga experience. You cannot be present to yoga if you are texting or emailing or anxiously awaiting a call. And neither can anyone around you. Definitely, if one phone is out, many pairs of eyes are drawn to it. And then other phones start to appear. Forget the fact that you’re missing the class you paid for; you’re at risk of losing your balance and hurting yourself or someone else due to inattention, or disturbing someone else’s moment of peace and stillness with the clicking of your keys.
So please, do yourself and everyone around you, this teacher included, a favor and turn your phone off and put it away before you unroll your yoga mat. If you truly are on call, think hard before you come to class.
Be present for yourself, wherever you need to be.
4.How does the author introduce her topic
A.By giving examples. B.By making comparison.
C.By presenting the process. D.By analyzing cause and effect.
5.Why was the young woman angry with the author
A.She felt the author was rude. B.She thought she was reasonable.
C.She believed she was discriminated. D.She found the yoga class was not interesting.
6.Which is a probable result of using phone s in yoga class
A.Relaxing yourself. B.Disturbing others.
C.Achieving work-life balance. D.Getting others’ admiration.
7.What’s the author’s purpose of writing this text
A.To explain her relationship with students.
B.To describe the situation of her yoga class.
C.To show her opinion about using mobile phones.
D.To stress the importance of being attentive in yoga class.
Imagine ancient mathematicians carving symbols onto wooden blocks. Without a concept of zero, how would their calculations operate
For civilizations like Egypt and Greece, zero had no place in their framework and they relied on contextual understanding in their mathematical expressions. Greek mathematicians such as Aristotle even questioned the very nature of zero, struggling to define “nothing” in a mathematical sense. The absence of zero meant that ancient arithmetic (算术) was far more complex and restricted in its capabilities.
The first clear recorded use of zero as a figure appeared in ancient India around the 5th century CE. Brahmagupta, an Indian mathematician, formalized the concept of zero in his work Brahmasphutasiddhanta (628 CE) . He described zero as a number and established rules for arithmetic operations involving zero. For example, he defined adding zero to a number does not change its value, and multiplying any number by zero results in zero. Indian scholars recognized zero’s potential as a number, paving the way for modern mathematical systems.
Following from this, the adoption of zero revolutionized mathematics and zero extends beyond pure mathematics. In the 1600s, Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the founders of calculus (微积分) , built their theories around the fundamental role of zero. Later in physics, the concept of absolute zero represents the lowest possible temperature. In the Digital Age, zero is key to computer science and digital technology. Binary code, the foundation of all computing systems, is based on sequences (序列) of Os and 1s. Without zero, the digital revolution, including everything from smartphones to artificial intelligence, would not be possible.
Zero may appear to be a simple concept, but its journey — from an ancient Indian innovation to a global cornerstone — reveals how “nothing” transformed civilization. It has reshaped mathematics, science, and technology, proving that even emptiness holds limitless power.
8.What did the absence of zero bring about in ancient times
A.The slow development of maths.
B.Doubts about ancient civilisations.
C.The low level of human intelligence.
D.Misreadings about mathematical language.
9.What contributions did Brahmagupta make concerning zero
A.Recording its first use. B.Promoting its further spread.
C.Setting up its operation rules. D.Changing its original concept.
10.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.The future of zero. B.The nature of zero.
C.The influence of zero. D.The history of zero.
11.What can we learn from the journey of zero
A.Zero is hero. B.Everything is nothing.
C.Zero rules the world. D.Maths comes from nothing.
Sparkling water (气泡水) lovers, here’s some good news: A new study suggests that the carbonation (碳化) in sparkling water might play a surprising role in how our bodies process sugar.
While many choose sparkling water as a healthier replacement of sugary sodas, researchers at Japan’s Tesseikai Neurosurgery Hospital have found that its bubbles (气泡) could impact sugar processing in unexpected ways.
It’s long been known that sparkling water can help reduce hunger by making us feel fuller. However, this new study explores deeper, examining how carbon dioxide (CO2)—the gas responsible for the bubbles—affects our blood cells. When we drink sparkling water, CO2 is taken into the bloodstream through the stomach wall. There, it meets with red blood cells, which contain an enzyme (酶). This enzyme turns CO2 into bicarbonate, giving rise to a chain reaction that may enhance the body’s ability to process sugar.
The researchers made this discovery through their observation of kidney dialysis (肾透析) treatments. During dialysis, as blood passes through a special machine, sugar levels drop, even though the surrounding blood has more sugar in it. This suggests that something about this process helps the body use sugar better.
However, before you start replacing all your regular water with the sparkling variety, it’s important to understand the extent of these effects. During a four-hour dialysis treatment, processing nearly 50 liters of blood only results in using up about 9.5 grams of sugar, the amount in a single tablespoon. The amount of CO2 in a glass of sparkling water would have an even smaller effect.
What’s more, not everyone should rush to buy sparkling water. Some people might experience discomfort, particularly if they have easily upset stomachs. As with most things in nutrition, a proper amount is key. While sparkling water won’t be the magic solution to weight loss, it might be doing a bit more than we thought to help our bodies process sugar. Consider it one more small tool in the toolbox of healthy living, alongside balanced nutrition and regular exercise.
12.How does sparkling water influence sugar processing according to the new study
A.By turning CO2 into sugar. B.By increasing our appetite.
C.By interacting with red blood cells. D.By limiting the activity of enzyme.
13.What makes sugar levels reduce during the dialysis process
A.CO2 that removes sugar from blood.
B.The sparkling water that contains CO2.
C.The machine which takes in the sugar in the blood.
D.The machine that helps the body use sugar better.
14.Why are some figures listed in Paragraph 5
A.To show that sparkling water is a perfect replacement for dialysis.
B.To prove that the impact of sparkling water on sugar levels is limited.
C.To indicate that the effect of dialysis is far from satisfactory.
D.To prove that sparkling water can significantly increase sugar levels.
15.What is the writer’s attitude towards sparkling water
A.Objective. B.Disapproving. C.Negative. D.Doubtful.
16.What is the best title of the passage
A.Sparkling water: a good way to keep us healthy

Lily was a bright and energetic girl with a heart full of dreams. She lived in a small and comfort town where everyone knew each other. One sunny morning, Lily’s teacher announced a school talent show. The news excited Lily immediately, as she had always loved singing and dreamed of performing on stage.
Without hesitation, Lily signed up for the show. She chose her favourite song and started practising right away. Every day after school, she would go to the park and sing her heart out, imagining the big stage and the cheering audience. However, as the days passed, Lily faced a big problem. She found it difficult to reach some of the high notes in the song. No matter how hard she tried, her voice just wouldn’t cooperate.
Lily started to feel discouraged. She thought about giving up and withdrawing from the talent show. But deep inside, she knew that giving up was not an option. She remembered the words her father always told her, “When life gives you challenges, face them with courage and never give up.”
Determined to overcome the obstacle, Lily decided to ask for help. She went to her music teacher, Mrs. Brown, and explained her problem. Mrs. Brown was very kind and patient. She listened to Lily sing and then gave her some useful tips on how to control her voice and reach the high notes. She also encouraged Lily to practise regularly and believe in herself.
With Mrs. Brown’s guidance, Lily practised even harder. She spent hours every day working on those difficult notes. Sometimes she felt tired and depressed, but she always reminded herself of her dream. Finally, the day of the talent show arrived. Lily was nervous but excited. One possible version:
Lily poured her heart and soul into the song. Standing on the stage, her eyes closed, she swung gently with the music. Her voice resounded powerfully and obviously, hitting every note perfectly, especially those high notes that once troubled her. Veins slightly bulged on her neck as she reached for the climax part, and her hands took fast hold on the microphone. The audience sat out of their mind, their eyes fixed on her. When she finished, the whole auditorium erupted into thunderous applause. Lily’s face lit up, and she felt a sense of pride and achievement wash over her, a huge smile spreading across her cheeks.
After the show, Lily’s friends and teachers crowded around her. Her friends, eyes wide with admiration, said, “Lily, that was incredible! Every move was so accurate and full of emotion.” Teachers nodded in agreement, adding, “Your devotion really shone through. The countless hours of practice were evident.” Lily stood there, a shy smile on her face. Glancing around at their supportive faces, she truly understood that through her own hard work, never-giving-up spirit and the encouragement she’d received, she was capable of reaching any goal. This performance wasn’t just an event; it was a life-changing lesson she’d treasure forever.

From misremembering a movie quote to forgetting a vital ingredient from the shops for an evening dinner, the human memory is not always reliable. Now, researchers have discovered that sleep may play a key role in distorting(扭曲) memories, but perhaps in a good way.
As part of this study, researchers from the University of York’s Department of Psychology tested 488 participants on their ability to recall a list of words 12 hours after seeing them, with some of the participants being allowed to sleep in the 12-hour period.
They found that those who had slept remembered more of the words on the list than those who had not, but they were also more likely to give words that weren’t on the list, but were related. The related incorrect words are known as “lure words”. If a list contained words like nurse, hospital and sick, the false memories may include lure words like doctor.
Dr Matthew Mak, first author of the study, said, “Participants may falsely recall the lure words because ‘doctor’ most probably represents the gist(要旨) of the word list, and humans are known to often rely on gist encoding.” Co-author Professor Gareth Gaskell added, “Memories in some ways are more about our future than our past. They exist to provide knowledge about our past that can be applied in a generalised way to help us to deal with future events. So a gist-like representation might actually be more useful than a ‘perfect’ detailed representation. What sleep might be doing is helping us to store memories in a gist-like way that can then be better applied to our future interactions.”
However, the researchers did recognize several limitations of their study, namely that all participants were aged between 18 and 25, and that the tests were performed online, meaning that other distractions(干扰) and environments could not be controlled.
4.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the study
A.Its purpose. B.Its process. C.Its subject. D.Its finding.
5.What is Gaskell’s attitude to a gist-like representation
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Favorable. D.Unclear.
6.What message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph
A.The tests make little sense. B.The study needs improving.
C.The conclusion is satisfying. D.The participants are nervous.
7.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.Sleep May Bring About False Memories B.Old People Tend to Have Short Memories
C.A Good Night’s Sleep Keeps Us Energetic D.Rising Early Delivers a Promising Start
As we age, we tend to be less open to encounters with unknown individuals, and less inclined(倾向于) to bond with people we have just met. Now researchers say we are not alone. This phenomenon is not unique to the human species: animals also become less sociable as they age.
A collection of 16 studies, including six from the University of Leeds, have been published in a special issue of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. One study into red deer shows that as older female deer become less and less social with age, they cut down on competition and reduce their risk of parasite(寄生虫) infection. The study used data from a long-running project tracking a wild herd(鹿群) on the Scottish island of Rum.
Dr. Josh Firth, first author of the study, said that while previous research has often considered the process of becoming less social with age, known as “social ageing” as potentially negative, the study shows changing habits could in fact bring benefits. Like older humans who scale back their social interactions to avoid infections such as COVID-19, the less sociable, older ones are less likely to pick up certain diseases.
“As such, while it is certainly worth still trying to lessen the obvious disadvantages that might come with people reducing their social connections as they age, we should also consider the potential benefits,” Firth said, adding that new technologies—such as virtual interactions—could help humans get the best of both worlds.
Dr. Greg Albery, co-author of the study, said: “Because ageing is a universal process, and all animals live in some sort of social context, the topics that we discuss in detail can have really far-ranging implications. The hope is that in understanding the diversity of ageing and sociality across lots of different species, we can shine a light on the processes governing our own society in a time when understanding ageing is particularly important.”
The researchers now aim to apply these scientific methods to other long-term data sets of wild animals, hoping to develop a broader understanding of the fundamental principles that may shape aging and social behavior in natural populations.
8.What does Dr. Josh Firth’s study look at
A.The features of an ageing society.
B.Animals’ wellbeing in their golden years.
C.Interpersonal relationships in human societies.
D.The relationship between age and social connections.
9.How was Firth’s study finding obtained
A.By analyzing collected data. B.By tracking a Scottish wild herd.
C.By sorting related research papers. D.By referring to previous study finds.
10.What does the underlined part “get the best of both worlds” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Enjoy health benefits without reduced sociability.
B.Live in both the virtual and physical worlds.
C.Take full advantage of their social engagement.
D.Balance the advantages and disadvantages of ageing.
11.Which of the following can summarize Dr. Greg Albery’s words
A.How we can coexist with ageing animals.
B.Whether ageing is universal across species.
C.What animal societies can teach us about ageing.
D.Why it is important to govern an ageing population.
In modern society, mobile phones have become an essential part of people’s lives. However, whether students should be allowed to bring mobile phones to school has become a controversial(有争议的) issue. Different people hold different opinions. In my view, students should not be allowed to bring mobile phones to school.
First of all, mobile phones can easily distract students from their study. In class, some students may secretly play games, chat with friends, or browse social media instead of listening to the teacher. Even during breaks, instead of reviewing lessons or doing some physical activities, they may be absorbed in their mobile phones. As a result, their study efficiency will be greatly reduced, and their grades may decline.
Secondly, overuse of mobile phones is harmful to students’ physical and mental health. Staring at the phone screen for a long time can cause eye problems, such as myopia. Also, some students may be exposed(接触) to inappropriate(不适合的) content on their phones, like violent or vulgar(粗俗的) information, which can have a negative impact on their psychological development. Moreover, too much time spent on mobile phones means less time for face-to-face communication with classmates and family, which may lead to problems in interpersonal relationships.
Some people may argue that mobile phones can be useful tools for study. For example, students can use them to look up information or watch educational videos. However, schools can provide other proper resources, like libraries and computer rooms, to meet students’ needs.
In conclusion, although mobile phones have their advantages, considering the negative impacts on students’ study and health, they should not be allowed in school. Schools and parents should work together to help students focus on their study and grow up healthily.

Short story competitions offer great enjoyment and, if successful, an incomparable thrill. Many offer cash prizes and fame that enhance your writing CV, potentially opening doors to new opportunities. Winning entries are often published. 37 Here is an insight into what’s required to advance an entry onto the shortlist and beyond.
To make your entry stand on, think outside the box. As Mark Twain said, “There is no such thing as a new idea,” but competition judges seek originality. 38 For instance, transform “Little Red Riding Hood” by changing character roles — what if Red Riding Hood is a courageous young man Innovating familiar tales can draw judges seeking something fresh and original.
39 While most stories are told in the first or third person, the second-person viewpoint can engage readers in an entirely unique way. Alternatively, describe from the perspective of a child facing a family crisis or even a bad guy with a convincing backstory. Such narrators not only excite interest but also arouse empathy, enriching the reader’s experience.
Bringing humor into your story can lighten the mood, making your entry impressive. In a sea of heavy narratives, a laugh can make your story unforgettable. 40 Otherwise, the judge might feel you have gone too far.
Reading previous winning stories helps you get a feeling for what makes a prize-winning tale. 41 By analyzing them, you’ll refine your own style and grasp what makes a story shine.
Winning your first competition can be a life-changing experience. With these strategies in your toolkit, you’re well on your way to creating stories that appeal. Embrace the challenge, and let your creativity shine!
A.Humor brings out that laugh and helps you win favor from the judge.
B.Even familiar themes, like romance or ghost stories, can be re-imagined.
C.The joy of seeing your name published alongside your story is amazing.
D.However, ensure your humor feels natural and relevant rather than forced.
E.Embracing unusual viewpoints can also attract judges’ attention.
F.Successful entries offer insights into successful styles, themes, and language.
G.Chances are, whatever theme yours is, the judge will have seen it all before.

My sister, Angie, locked herself in the tree house Dad made for her. I jumped, grabbed the lowest branch of the maple tree, and pulled myself up. “Here I go again,” I thought “Be careful, Matt,” Mom said from the base of the tree. “Don’t fall.” I reached for the next branch. It wasn’t a hard climb if Angie hadn’t pulled the ladder into the tree house.
I beat on the door and asked her to open up. Angie refused. Sometimes I wondered why I bothered. I crawled through the window opening Dad had cut in the wall. Angie sat in one corner. “Mom says you’ve been here long enough. You have to come down.” I said. Angie shook her head, saying she was living in this tree forever and never going to school again. I asked her what happened at school. Angie’s eyes were filled with tears, and she covered her face with her hands. “I told a kid at school we were getting a new baby brother. He asked, ‘What color Green ’” I laughed. That was actually funny.
“This is serious!” Angie cried. “He said the baby won’t really be my brother, the same way you aren’t. He said our family isn’t a real family. We’re like a circus. All different colors-black and yellow and white.”
“Well, he’s wrong,” I said. “We’re a real family. You and I and the baby are adopted. So what ” Angie looked up, still believing that kid at school more than she believed me. I could tell. I sat down opposite her on the tree-house floor, a floor full of knotholes (节孔) and gaps. I began to convince her by laying out the facts. “Who taught you to ride a bike, to skate, and to e-mail Grandma ” After a long pause, Angie finally admitted that it was I. “Yes, I did all that because I’m your brother. It’s what brothers do.” I added.

4.D
5.C
6.B
7.A
根据文章第三段“They found that those who had slept remembered more of the words on the list than those who had not, but they were also more likely to give words that weren’t on the list, but were related. The related incorrect words are known as ‘lure words’. If a list contained words like nurse, hospital and sick, the false memories may include lure words like doctor.(他们发现,睡过觉的人比没睡过的人记住了清单上更多的单词,但他们也更有可能说出清单上没有的、但与之相关的单词。相关的错误词汇被称为“引诱词”。如果一个列表包含诸如护士、医院和病人这样的单词,那么错误记忆可能包含诸如医生这样的诱惑词。)”可知,本段主要讲述了该研究的发现,故选D项。
5.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Co-author Professor Gareth Gaskell added, ‘Memories in some ways are more about our future than our past. They exist to provide knowledge about our past that can be applied in a generalised way to help us to deal with future events. So a gist-like representation might actually be more useful than a ‘perfect’ detailed representation. What sleep might be doing is helping us to store memories in a gist-like way that can then be better applied to our future interactions.’(合著者Gareth Gaskell教授补充说:“在某种程度上,记忆更多地是关于我们的未来,而不是过去。它们的存在是为了提供关于我们过去的知识,这些知识可以以一种一般化的方式应用,帮助我们应对未来的事件。因此,类似于要点的表述可能比“完美”的详细表述更有用。睡眠的作用可能是帮助我们以一种类似要点的方式储存记忆,然后可以更好地应用于我们未来的互动。”)”可知,Gareth Gaskell对概要式陈述的态度是肯定的,故选C项。
6.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“However, the researchers did recognize several limitations of their study, namely that all participants were aged between 18 and 25, and that the tests were performed online, meaning that other distractions(干扰) and environments could not be controlled.(然而,研究人员也认识到他们的研究存在一些局限性,即所有参与者的年龄都在18到25岁之间,而且测试是在网上进行的,这意味着其他干扰因素和环境无法控制。)”
通读全文尤其是第一段中“Now, researchers have discovered that sleep may play a key role in distorting(扭曲) memories, but perhaps in a good way.(现在,研究人员发现,睡眠可能在扭曲记忆中发挥关键作用,但也许是一种有益的方式。)”

Josh Firth, first author of the study, said that while previous research has often considered the process of becoming less social with age, known as ‘social ageing’ as potentially negative, the study shows changing habits could in fact bring benefits.(该研究的第一作者Josh Firth博士说,虽然之前的研究经常认为随着年龄的增长而变得不那么社交的过程,即所谓的“社交老龄化”可能是负面的,但该研究表明,改变习惯实际上可能会带来好处。)”
根据文章第二段的“The study used data from a long-running project tracking a wild herd(鹿群) on the Scottish island of Rum.(这项研究使用了一个长期项目的数据,该项目追踪了苏格兰朗姆酒岛上的一群野生鹿群。)” 故选A。
根据画线短语所在语境“‘As such, while it is certainly worth still trying to lessen the obvious disadvantages that might come with people reducing their social connections as they age, we should also consider the potential benefits,’ Firth said, adding that new technologies—such as virtual interactions—could help humans get the best of both worlds.( Firth说:“因此,虽然仍然值得尝试减少人们随着年龄增长而减少社交联系可能带来的明显缺点,但我们也应该考虑潜在的好处。”他补充说,虚拟交互等新技术可以帮助人类两全其美。)”可知,“both worlds”指代“减少社交以避免疾病(弊端)”和“维持社交以获得益处”。Firth提到新技术(如虚拟互动)可帮助人们“在不减少社交的情况下享受健康益处”;由此猜测画线部分指的是“在不减少社交的情况下享受健康益处”。故选A。
Greg Albery, co-author of the study, said: ‘Because ageing is a universal process, and all animals live in some sort of social context, the topics that we discuss in detail can have really far-ranging implications. The hope is that in understanding the diversity of ageing and sociality across lots of different species, we can shine a light on the processes governing our own society in a time when understanding ageing is particularly important.’(该研究的合著者Greg Albery博士说:“由于衰老是一个普遍的过程,所有动物都生活在某种社会背景下,我们详细讨论的主题可能会产生非常广泛的影响。希望在理解许多不同物种的衰老和社会性的多样性时,我们可以在理解衰老尤为重要的时候,揭示我们自己社会的治理过程。”)”可知,他认为研究通过分析不同物种衰老与社交的多样性,旨在揭示支配人类社会的规律。这表明他认为动物社会的研究能为理解人类衰老提供启示。故选C。

Then I continued with more facts. “And who helped Mom bake and decorate that excellent cake for my last birthday ” I asked. Angie whispered that it was she because she was my sister. “And who stayed up late taking care of you every time you fell ill ” Angie pursed her lips and replied it was Mom. “And who built this tree house because you wanted one so badly, even after he’d hit his thumb with the hammer ” Angie giggled. “It’s a good thing that Daddy doesn’t build tree houses for a job.” I knew what she meant. The tree-house floor was full of gaps. Still, it was a great tree house built with love, just like our family. To my delight, I convinced her that our family was real because we loved each other.
Angie and I were talking when Mom called, “Hey, guys, are you coming down to meet your little brother ” Hearing this, we stopped our conversation and let down the ladder. When we got down, a cute baby sleeping peacefully in my mother’s arms appealed to us at once. I approached quietly and cautiously touched his soft hair. He meant a treasure to us, bringing new blood to our family. Angie, too, came and stared at the baby with great amazement, now believing he was part of our family. At this moment, she understood the meaning of family lies in the sympathy, help and love. Despite our skin, we will bravely overcome the difficulties we confront with together, which is what the real family is about.

From carefully reconstructed sites like Chichen Itza to the ceremonial temples of Calakmul, these are the ancient Maya ruins not to miss in Mexico.
Chichen Itza
Named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the beautifully preserved Chichen Itza in Yucatán is Mexico’s most famous Maya ruins. Despite the crowds, few are dissatisfied with El Castillo — a carefully restored pyramid that rises up 80ft and has 365 steps — the largest Maya ball court in the Americas.
Tulum
Built in the 13th century, Tulum was one of the last cities where the Maya people lived and the only one built on the coast. The pyramids here aren’t as large as other Maya ruins in Mexico, but the setting, on 40ft-high cliffs(悬崖) above the Caribbean waters south of Cancun, more than makes up for it.
Cobá
Home to the tallest pyramid in the state of Quintana Roo, Cobá was once one of the most important Maya cities in Yucatán. Located around 30 miles west of Tulum ruins, the city was built in around 600 CE and it eventually grew to 50,000 people living there. Though much of Cobá has yet to be excavated(发掘), travellers can climb the 138ft-high Nohoch Mul — a pyramid that offers sweeping views over the Yucatán rainforest.
Calakmul
In Campeche’s Calakmul Biosphere Reserve near the border with Guatemala, Calakmul is one of Mexico’s wildest Maya ruins. It has the largest and tallest pyramid in Yucatán and more than 6,000 buildings, many of them covered by rainforest. The site is particularly beautiful at sunrise, when the surrounding forest comes alive with birdsong.

Just off the Florida Keys lies the world’s third-largest coral reef (珊瑚礁), which was once an energetic habitat for millions of plants and animals. But an outbreak of stony coral tissue loss disease threatens to destroy 20 of the 45 species found there, including larger reef-building corals.
“This disease that is burning through the Florida Keys is an unbelievable event that is happening,” said Andrew Stamper, conservation science manager at Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment. “It’s like a wildfire.” Stamper said that would endanger Florida’s fishing industry and food supply. “Unfortunately, we do not know exactly what is causing this,” he said.
In order to save the reef, scientists have moved some species hundreds of miles away to a lab in Orlando. Scientists work to simulate breeding (繁殖) conditions in the lab. The conditions are exactly the same as the living conditions of the coral. The work needs a lot of care, effort and attention to detail. LED lights exactly copy the sun and moon cycles. Volunteers feed the coral in water treated to mimic its real habitat.
“This essentially is a gene bank,” said Jim Kinsler, leader of SeaWorld Orlando. “We’re trying to protect the genetics of these corals so that their offspring(后代)can eventually be returned back to the Florida reef area.”
The task of relocating the lab-grown coral to the sea is also a detailed task. Kinsler, who is part of a team of private and public partners operating the Florida Coral Rescue Center, said, “It’s the first time that many of them have been involved in rescuing an entire ecosystem,”
“We think the real challenge is just growing them out to a size, so we can test them in those waters, test their disease resistance (抵抗力), and then breed the successful corals by the hundreds of thousands literally,” said Andrew Walker, president of the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida.
4.What do we know about the Florida Keys
A.It owns the world’s largest coral reef.
B.A disease broke out among people there.
C.The world’s third-largest coral reef is close to it.
D.It is now the habitat of millions of plants and animals.
5.What do Andrew Stamper’s words mean
A.The root of the disease is unclear.
B.A wildfire broke out in the Florida Keys.
C.The disease will spread across the Earth.
D.The disease has caused a great loss to the locals.
6.What does the underlined word “simulate” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Copy. B.Contrast. C.Escape. D.Feature.
7.What is the purpose of the research according to Andrew Walker
A.To restore the coral in the lab.
B.To sell the coral in the normal size.
C.To make more people involved in protecting the ecosystem.
D.To produce masses of disease-resistant coral back to the sea.
Alongside the crisps in the snack aisle, supermarkets are now stacking shelves with roasted chickpeas, cheese bites, and beef jerky. An array of high-protein alternatives is appearing alongside low-fat and low-sugar foods. Dairy sections are packed with hard-to-pronounce fare such as skyr and kefir. High-protein diets have become mainstream.
On social media, food and fitness influencers recommend protein. Celebrities have made it trendy to look strong, rather than skinny. A trend is close to an obsession. Google searches for “high-protein diet” reached their highest point ever in January. Some 64% of Americans want to increase the amount of protein they eat. In Britain, Ocado, an online supermarket, figures over 40% of consumers have increased their protein intake over the past year. So what explains the constant appetite
Gym enthusiasts have been wolfing down protein for decades. More recently the less strong have also realised that protein can help them build muscle while feeling fuller for longer. Juergen Esser at Danone, a French dairy giant, says hunger for protein first took off among youngsters who want to look muscular. It soon spread to older people eager to stay strong and healthy. The pandemic got people worrying about their health and increased demand.
High-protein products are helping firms expand. Revenues at Danone increased by 4.3% in 2024, driven by high-protein yoghurts and drinks. The question is whether the trend has gone too far. The World Health Organisation recommends 0.83 grams a day per kilogram of body weight. By that measure, the average American or Briton consumes too much.
For food firms already, struggling to meet multiple requirements, it is yet another challenge. Consumers do not only want more protein and less/ultra-processing, but also more plant-based food and anything good for the gut (肠道). The Curators, a British snackmaker, has a balancing act to perform. When the firm began making soya and lentil chips, it settled on ten grams of protein per bag. Recipes with more were not as tasty. And as food crazes come and go, a pleasant flavour may be the most enduring requirement of all.
8.What can we learn about high-protein diets
A.High-protein foods on supermarket shelves are always low in fat and sugar.
B.Their popularity was largely driven by social media and celebrity influence.
C.The majority of Google users are obsessed with adopting high-protein diets.
D.The consumption of high-protein diets in America is higher than that in Britain.

A.By presenting a series of statistical data.
B.By tracing the spread of the trend over time.
C.By analyzing the benefits through expert opinions.
D.By comparing the attitudes across different groups.
10.What is the main challenge food companies face in the high-protein market
A.Ensuring that high-protein products satisfy nutritional guidelines.
B.Reducing the costs of protein-rich products to remain competitive.
C.Balancing the dietary preferences and health concerns of consumers.
D.Convincing consumers that high-protein diets are universally healthy.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Fueling the Future: The Science Behind the Protein Obsession
B.Protein Revolution: Whether Modern Diets Have Gone Too Far
C.The Rise of Protein: How Demand Reshaped Consumer Behavior
D.from Gym to Shelves: A Growing Appetite for High-Protein Diets
People question whether social media is making modern society less empathetic(有同感的). Some studies show that heavy social media users are less empathetic, while others suggest quite the opposite.
To learn more about the question, we asked over 1,250 American participants(参与者) how often they checked social media. They also completed questionnaires(问卷) where they decided whether they have the qualities that researchers call empathy, such as thinking from other people’s point of view, feeling concerned for other people in trouble, and feeling bad when others feel bad.
Our study found that the more social media people reported using, the lower their levels of empathy were. This finding didn’t change much according to the type of social media they use, their gender(性别), or education. However, we only asked American adults. Is it possible that the relationship we found would not be true elsewhere
Indeed, researchers in other areas have found different results. Researchers in the UK, Spain, and the Netherlands have shown that, in their countries, higher social media use was related to higher empathy. An Indian study found no relationship between the two.
To learn the big picture, we compared all these studies. We found that the relationship between social media use and empathy differed based on two things: age and nationality. In general, studies carried out in Europe found a positive connection between social media use and empathy, while studies in the US found no meaningful or negative connection. Besides, research done with children under 18 showed a positive connection, while research with adults found no connection.
Cultural differences may explain the difference. Americans are more likely to post news about their personal achievements online. It is no surprise that Americans who use social media regularly are not developing their empathy skills. But populations outside of America appear to use social media for different purposes including strengthening friendships. For them, more social media use is connected with being more empathetic. Perhaps people’s purposes for using social media can tell us more about their character.
12.What is the main purpose of the research described in the passage
A.To prove that social media makes people less empathetic.
B.To study the impact of social media on American adults.
C.To compare the empathy levels of different nationalities.

The Power of Thinking Differently
Just in the past few weeks, my wife has become the supporter of the concept of zero-waste living. Zero-waste is obviously about changing behaviors to produce less waste. But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways people are getting around using plastic or reusing clothes or controlling the desire to accrue (积累) things we don’t really need, I realized that, zero-waste starts with something else. 16 And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing to do something differently, can be the hardest step of all.
This came to mind as I read a cover story in education. Ostensibly (表面上), it’s about more and more colleges agreeing to drop standardized tests as a required measure of student aptitude (天赋). 17
That is always going to be hard. But in recent decades, colleges have realized that the old ways of judging individual value, while not necessarily wrong, were narrow. While they identified one kind of student well, they did not account for a wide range of experiences, skills, and qualities that were no less important to achievement and success. 18 The tests weren’t good enough. Schools could do better.
So what has happened Schools are increasingly consenting to think differently about admissions. They have resolved to do the best they can to see the whole individual. 19 Some think dropping mandatory standardized tests is a mistake. However, once the first step is taken, the onward pull of reason and morality speed progress.
At a time when there appears to be so much confusion in the world, it is possible to look out and instead see something else: the world struggling with the perpetual (长久的) task of consenting to new ideas. Politics today show how easily we can become stuck in the mentally familiar.
20 That can be an admissions officer wanting to be more thoughtful in extending the benefits that her school offers. Or it can be a zero-waste blogger asking us all to think differently about how we contribute to greater balance in the world.
The only constant is the universal need for progress, and that will never leave us where it found us.
A.It starts with consenting (同意) to change thought.
B.Undoubtedly there have been missteps along the way.
C.In short, they left a lot of amazing people out and didn't even know it.
D.But at its heart, it reveals something more fundamental: how we judge individual value.
E.They offer the most challenging academic programs and ensure every student' s physical and mental health.
F.The world, on the other hand, is constantly demanding that we be kinder and more connected and think ever larger.
G.Many universities known to be highly selective in their admissions policies received more applicants than usual.

An exhibition at the Jiushi Art Museum in Shanghai is featuring artwork inspired by Go, or weiqi in Chinese, 37 originated in China more than 4,000 years ago.
Go is one of 38 earliest binary-based (基于二元的) games. The movements of the black and white pieces reflect the basic ideas of Eastern philosophy, according to Tu Ningning, who is in charge of the exhibition.
“The exhibition brings together Go culture, cutting-edge technology and contemporary art,” says Tu. “We hope 39 (present)the rather abstract Go game and AI in a visual context, and initiate dialogues with minimalist art, conceptual art and expressionism.”
“In a Go game, each move should serve a long-term goal. You try to lead the opponent into your trap and force them to follow your ’ 40 (guide) till they lose,” explains Wang Wei, a Go player among the visitors to the exhibition.
“The players’ personalities 41 (reveal) during the game and one’s weaknesses are exposed to the opponent,” she adds. “A decent winner always 42 (try) to beat the opponent 43 no more than one or two points as a gesture (姿态) of respect for the other side. ”
Tu says that the balance between the black and white pieces, the beauty in the 44 (strategy) placement of the pieces, 45 the energy flow following each move inspired artists to create oil paintings, sculptures, 46 (digital) generated pictures and silk-screen prints for the exhibition.

The chance to experience a new culture, improve my English, and make international friends seemed like a dream that comes true.
I managed to apply for a host family, read about rules and how to survive homesickness, and research about Bath on the Internet. With all preparations made, I was on a plane to Bath, my heart racing with a mix of eagerness and nerves.
Upon arrival, the picturesque city with its historic architecture and beautiful streets attracted me. My host family, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith and their son Mark, welcomed me warmly, which immediately put me at ease. After my settlement at their home, I quickly found comfort in my new surroundings.
Then came my first week at school, which, however, turned out to be a whirlwind(一片忙乱) besides a feeling of freshness. The education system was different from what I was used to in my hometown. Classes were more discussion-based and I was encouraged to express my opinions, which I wasn’t comfortable with at first. My teachers and classmates were friendly and curious about my background, often asking questions about my life in China. However, I struggled to keep up with the fast-paced(快节奏的) conversations. The British accent, with its unique slang(俚语), often made it hard for me to understand. There were moments in class when I felt lost, unable to fully understand the discussions or contribute meaningfully. This was frustrating(令人沮丧的), as I had always been a top student back home.
Along with the new experience at school, homesickness began to set in. I missed my family, friends, and the familiar rhythm(节奏) of life back in China. The cultural differences, from food to social rules, made me hard to get used to at times. I found myself missing a taste of my home, both physically and mentally.

根据Chichen Itza部分中“Named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the beautifully preserved Chichen Itza in Yucatán is Mexico’s most famous Maya ruins.(2007年被评为世界新七大奇迹之一,位于Yucatán的Chichen Itza保存完好,是墨西哥最著名的玛雅遗址。)”
根据Tulum部分中“Built in the 13th century, Tulum was one of the last cities where the Maya people lived and the only one built on the coast.(图卢姆建于13世纪,是玛雅人最后居住的城市之一,也是唯一一座建在海岸上的城市。)”
根据Calakmul部分中“It has the largest and tallest pyramid in Yucatán and more than 6,000 buildings, many of them covered by rainforest.(它拥有Yucatán中最大和最高的金字塔,以及6000多座建筑,其中许多都被雨林覆盖。)”
【答案】4.C 5.A 6.A 7.D
根据第一段“Just off the Florida Keys lies the world’s third-largest coral reef(珊瑚礁), which was once an energetic habitat for millions of plants and animals. But an outbreak of stony coral tissue loss disease threatens to destroy 20 of the 45 species found there, including larger reef-building corals. (佛罗里达群岛附近有世界第三大珊瑚礁,这里曾经是数百万动植物的栖息地。但是,石珊瑚组织丧失疾病的爆发威胁着那里45种珊瑚中的20种,包括更大的造礁珊瑚。)”可知,世界第三大珊瑚礁在佛罗里达群岛附近,爆发疾病的是珊瑚,珊瑚礁区有数百万动植物。故选C项。
5.推理判断题。根据第二段“‘This disease that is burning through the Florida Keys is an unbelievable event that is happening,' said Andrew Stamper, conservation science manager at Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment. ‘It’s like a wildfire.’ Stamper said that would endanger Florida’s fishing industry and food supply. ‘Unfortunately, we do not know exactly what is causing this,’ he said. (迪士尼动物、科学与环境保护科学经理斯坦珀说,‘正在佛罗里达群岛肆虐的这种疾病是一件令人难以置信的事情。它就像野火一样。’斯坦珀说,这将危及佛罗里达州的渔业和食品供应。他说,‘不幸的是,我们并不确切知道是什么导致了这种情况。’)”可知,珊瑚组织丧失疾病的根源尚不清楚。故选A项。
根据第三段“In order to save the reef, scientists have moved some species hundreds of miles away to a lab in Orlando. Scientists work to simulate breeding(繁殖)conditions in the lab. The conditions are exactly the same as the living conditions of the coral. The work needs a lot of care, effort and attention to detail. LED lights exactly copy the sun and moon cycles. Volunteers feed the coral in water treated to mimic its real habitat.
根据倒数第三段“‘This essentially is a gene bank,’ said Jim Kinsler, leader of SeaWorld Orlando. ‘We’re trying to protect the genetics of these corals so that their offspring (后代) can eventually be returned back to the Florida reef area.’ (奥兰多海洋世界的负责人金斯勒说,这实际上是一个基因库,‘我们正在努力保护这些珊瑚的基因,这样它们的后代最终就能回到佛罗里达的珊瑚礁区。’)”可知,科学家们保护珊瑚基因,希望能使他们的后代重返佛罗里达的珊瑚礁区。最后一段“‘We think the real challenge is just growing them out to a size, so we can test them in those waters, test their disease resistance (抵抗力), and then breed the successful corals by the hundreds of thousands literally,’ said Andrew Walker, president of the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida. (佛罗里达州鱼类和野生动物基金会主席安德鲁·沃克说:‘我们认为真正的挑战只是把它们长到一定的尺寸,这样我们就可以在那些水域测试它们,测试它们的抗病能力,然后培育出成千上万的成功珊瑚。’)”,根据安德鲁·沃克的话可知,研究的目的是实验室能培育出成千上万的有抗病能力的珊瑚,这样它们才有机会重新回到佛罗里达的珊瑚礁区。故选D项。

9.推理判断题。根据第三段“Gym enthusiasts have been wolfing down protein for decades.

【答案】 37.A 38.D 39.C 40.G 41.F

上文“But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways people are getting around using plastic or reusing clothes or controlling the desire to accrue things we don’t really need, I realized that, zero-waste starts with something else.(但当我妻子和我分享人们想出的各种方法来避免使用塑料、重复使用衣服或控制购买我们并不真正需要的东西的欲望时,我意识到,零浪费始于其他的东西。)” 下文“And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing to do something differently, can be the hardest step of all.(在很多方面,第一步,也就是愿意以不同的方式做事,可能是最难的一步。)” 故选A。
38.上文“Ostensibly, it’s about more and more colleges agreeing to drop standardized tests as a required measure of student aptitude.(表面上,这是关于越来越多的大学同意放弃将标准化考试作为学生能力的必要衡量标准。)”
39.上文“While they identified one kind of student well, they did not account for a wide range of experiences, skills, and qualities that were no less important to achievement and success.(虽然他们很好地识别出了一种类型的学生,但他们并没有考虑到一系列对成就和成功同样重要的经验、技能和品质。)”
40.上文“They have resolved to do the best they can to see the whole individual.(他们决心尽自己所能看到学生的全貌。)” 下文“Some think dropping mandatory standardized tests is a mistake.(有些人认为取消强制性标准化考试是个错误。)”
41.下文“That can be an admissions officer wanting to be more thoughtful in extending the benefits that her school offers. Or it can be a zero-waste blogger asking us all to think differently about how we contribute to greater balance in the world.(这可能是一位招生官想要更有思考地扩展她所在学校提供的福利。

故填by。
the balance between the black and white pieces, the beauty in the strategic placement of the pieces, the energy flow following each move三者为并列关系,作并列主语,所以空处需用连词and。故填and。

Recognizing my struggle, people around me stepped in to support me. On weekends, Mr. Smith would take me on a trip to many attractions, some even I had only read about in textbooks. Mrs. Smith went out of her way to make me feel at home by cooking Chinese dishes. Mike shared his own experiences of studying abroad to comfort me. At school, my teachers were patient and understanding, offering extra help with assignments and encouraging me to join clubs to make new friends. My classmates invited me to see movies, play hockey, and go to concerts. Everyone was warm, open, and never hesitant in offering help.
Gradually, I began to adapt to the life here. I offered to share Chinese culture with my host family. I joined the school’s debate club, which helped me improve my English and gain confidence in speaking. I also participated in a local volunteer group, where I met people from different backgrounds, each with their own unique stories. These experiences broadened my perspective and helped me feel more connected to my new environment. As the months passed, Bath began to feel like a second home. I developed a close connection with people here that I knew would last a lifetime.

Boston University Summer Journalism (新闻业) Academy
The Summer Journalism Academy at Boston University gives high school students the opportunity to expand their journalism skills and prepare for college. The academy offers two options:
● on-campus program —— three weeks, for students with journalism experience
● learn-from-home online program —— two weeks for all experience levels
For students interested in photography, we offer a special photojournalism track for both.
New for 2024 for on-campus students: Stories will be considered for publication in the Daily Free Press, one of the country’s top college newspapers.
Each option is organized into three parts:
● Classroom starts each day with a review of journalism fundamentals in a collegiate format. A university-level journalism textbook provides daily readings and writing assignments. Instructors cover story ideas, sources and research, interviewing, story structure, writing for broadcast and web, accuracy, and more.
● Newsroom provides time for students to apply what they learn in the Classroom part by reporting real news events near them. Students conduct interviews by phone, email and video to cover a wide range of stories.
● Guest Talks offer students advice and insight from journalism experts on topics such as radio reporting, media law and studying journalism in college. On-campus students also visit city newsrooms where they can hear directly from reporters at their workplaces, such as WBUR public radio and the Boston Globe.
1.What is required for on-campus students
A.A college education. B.An interest in photography.
C.A story published by the press. D.Previous experience in journalism.

Needles, though essential for delivering many vital medicines, are not popular among patients. Many people experience discomfort or anxiety at the sight of a needle, making injections (注射) an unpleasant experience. Now, new research led by Giovanni Traverso at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers a way to give medicine without this discomfort—by copying how squids (鱿鱼) shoot ink and water.
Dr. Traverso’s tiny automated injectors are packaged in capsules that patients can swallow. Once inside the digestive system, the capsules break down, releasing the injectors, which then deliver drugs through the surface layer of stomach or other digestive organs and into the subsurface tissues below. This method allows patients to receive treatment without seeing or feeling a needle.
Although the technique is promising, it is not yet entirely reliable. For an injector to work effectively, it must be positioned almost perfectly upright against the target tissue. With skin injections, a medical professional can adjust the angle by hand, but inside the digestive system, this is much more difficult.
To solve this problem, Dr. Traver so turned to squids, which can shoot ink and water at high pressure in multiple directions. Inspired by this natural ability, he and his team worked with a medical company to develop tiny spring-loaded devices that release fast streams of medicine when activated. Tests on digestive tissues from pigs and dogs showed that the devices can effectively give injections even at angles below 70°.
While human trials have yet to begin, Dr. Traver so hopes the technology will soon help people with diabetes, a disease that requires the patients to get multiple injections daily. A more convenient delivery system could make treatment easier and less stressful. But the potential applications extend beyond diabetes—similar devices may one day be used to administer vaccines, making immunization (免疫接种) more accessible. If all goes well, fear of needles could become a thing of the past.
4.What can we learn about the new injectors from the first two paragraphs
A.They are made from squid ink. B.They are invisible to human eyes.
C.They enjoy popularity among patients. D.They operate within the digestive system.
5.What challenge does Traverso’s technique face
A.Keeping the injector at a correct angle. B.Finding a proper site for drug delivery.
C.Having reliable medical professionals. D.Accessing the deep digestive system.
6.What can we infer about the technology from the last paragraph
A.It proves effective in human trials. B.It may cure people of needle anxiety.
C.It shows promises for future applications. D.It will reduce the cost of diabetes treatment.
7.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.The Secret of Squid Ink Shooting B.Painless Injection: A Gift from Squid
C.Nature: A Guide for Medical Innovation D.The Development of Injection Techniques
Listen carefully to a spoken conversation and you’ll notice that the speakers use a lot of little quasi-words — mm-hmm, um, huh and the like — that don’t convey any information about the topic of the conversation itself: For many decades, linguists regarded such utterances as largely irrelevant noise. But these little words may be much more important than that. A few linguists now think that they may be crucial traffic signals to control the progression of conversation as well as tools to negotiate mutual understanding.
For most of the history of linguistics, scholars have tended to focus on written language, in large part because that’s what they had records of. But once recordings of conversation became available, they could begin to analyze spoken language the same way as writing. When they did, they observed that interjections — that is, short utterances of just a word or two that are not part of a larger sentence — were ubiquitous in everyday speech.
Many of these interjections serve to regulate the flow of conversation. An um or uh from the speaker, for example, signals that they’re about to pause, but aren’t finished speaking. A quick huh or what from the listener, on the other hand, can signal a failure of communication that the speaker needs to repair. In a survey of 31 languages around the world, researchers found that all of them used a short, neutral syllable similar to huh as a repair signal, probably because it’s quick to produce.
Different interjections can send slightly different signals. Consider, for example, one person describing to another how to build a piece of IKEA furniture, says Allison Nguyen, a psycholinguist at Illinois State University. In such a conversation, mm-hmm might indicate that the speaker should continue explaining the current step, while yeah or OK would imply that the listener is done with that step and it’s time to move on to the next.
8.The phrase “traffic signals” in paragraph 1 emphasizes interjections’ ______.
A.decorative role in conversation B.rank-related function in grammar
C.regulatory power in dialogue flow D.evolutionary origin in pronunciation
9.What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Universal. B.Complex. C.Limited. D.Formal.
10.What is paragraph3 mainly about
A.The functions of interjections. B.The signals’ cultural differences.
C.Regulations in a conversation. D.The global incidence of interjections.
11.What does the IKEA furniture example illustrate
A.Listeners use interjections to demonstrate authority.
B.Context decides interjections’ interpretation difference.
C.Task-directed conversations require more interjections.
D.Speakers adapt interjections based on listeners’ feedback.

As a child, I was crazy about the art of pottery (陶艺). The way the smooth clay made beneath my fingertips, transforming into unique shapes under the gentle rotation (旋转) of the potter’s wheel, was really magical. I spent countless hours in my school’s art studio, lost in a world where creativity knew no bounds. Each piece I crafted was a labor of love, an expression of my thoughts and emotions.
However, as I grew up, my once-strong passion for pottery gradually disappeared. The pressures of academic excellence, social obligations, and the uncertainty of the future pushed my artistic pursuits to the periphery (边缘) of my life. I traded in my pottery tools for textbooks and calculators, convinced that a more “practical” path was the key to a successful future.
Years passed, and I found myself ensconced (安置) in a corporate job that, while financially rewarding, left me feeling unfulfilled. The boring daily routine, the endless meetings, and the constant pressure to meet targets had a bad effect on my spirit. I often found myself daydreaming about the carefree days of my childhood, when the simple act of creating something with my hands brought me so much joy.
One weekend, while searching through the attic (阁楼) of my childhood home, I found a dusty box filled with my old pottery pieces. As I carefully lifted each item out of the box, memories came flooding back. I was immediately transported back to those happy days in the art studio, where time seemed to stand still and every creation was a new adventure.
Holding my own pottery creation in hands, I was longing for the creative freedom I had once possessed. Without hesitation, I decided to learn pottery again. I enrolled in a local community college’s pottery class, feeling both nervous and excited as I stepped back into the world of clay and creativity.
The first few sessions were challenging. My hands, once so skillful, now moved awkwardly with the clay. The muscle memory that had once come so naturally seemed to have faded with time. But I refused to be discouraged. I spent hours practicing, studying the techniques of my fellow students and instructors, and gradually, my skills began to return.
As I explored in my pottery journey, I realized that it wasn’t just about creating beautiful objects. It was about reconnecting with a part of myself that I had lost along the way. It was about finding relief in the creative process, in the act of taking something formless and transforming it into something meaningful.
With each new piece I created, I felt a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that I had never experienced in my corporate career. The stress and anxiety that had bothered me for so long seemed to melt away as I focused on the simple pleasure of working with my hands.
Today, pottery has once again become a part of my life. It has taught me the importance of staying true to myself, of never losing sight of the things that bring me joy and fulfillment.

I had always been cautious around Max. He was the quiet kid in our grade, the one who sat at the back of the classroom with his hood (连衣帽) pulled low over his face. Max rarely spoke to anyone, and when he did, his words were rudely brief and often misunderstood. Rumors (谣言) about him spread like wildfire - some said he got into fights after school, others claimed he had once stolen a teacher’s wallet, l didn’t know if any of them was true, but l stayed away, just like everyone else.
Then one Friday morning, Max didn’t show up to class. A low voice of curiosity spread through the room, and soon enough, theories about his absence started flying. “He got suspended,” whispered a girl next to me. “I heard he struck a guy outside the library. ” I wasn’t surprised, and nodded in agreement.
Later that day, I found myself at the park, enjoying the first warm day of spring. That’s when I saw him - Max - sitting alone on the swings. His usual guarded expression was gone, and replaced by something I hadn’t expected: sadness. Against my better judgment, I walked over.
“Hey,” I said awkwardly.
Max looked up, surprised. “What do you want ”
“I…just saw you here and thought I’d say hi.”
He gave me a strange look but said nothing. I was about to walk away when I noticed a wrinkled piece of paper in his hand, “What’s that ” I asked.
For a moment, he hesitated. Then, with a shrug, he handed it to me. It was a hospital discharge form, and the name on it wasn’t his. It was his younger sister’s. I looked at him, confused.
“She’s been sick for months,” Max explained, his voice barely heard. “Yesterday was bad. My mom couldn’t leave work, so I stayed at the hospital and looked after her all night. ”
It hit me then how wrong we had all been about Max. The tough outward appearance, the distance - he wasn’t trying to push people away. He was carrying a weight none of us understood.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The next Monday, Max returned, but rumors remained.

37.根据上文“His mother, recognizing his gift, took it as her duty to guide him.”
38.文章第一段讲述了杰克在游泳方面的突出表现和早期专注于游泳的经历,而第二段主要在介绍萨姆;根据下文“He went skiing, and played tennis, soccer, and many other sports.Sam was a kid who loved to play…” Jack,a variety of sports与下文中的skiing、tennis、soccer和many other sports呼应。故选G项。

40.根据上文“potential champions typically devote less time to deliberate practice in childhood, but more to sampling various activities”可知,潜在的冠军通常在童年时较少专注于练习某项运动,而是将更多的时间用于尝试各种各样的活动。

The next Monday, Max returned, but rumors remained. Someone had even started calling him “Mad Max” and the nickname caught on. I couldn’t stand it anymore. During lunch, I stood up in the middle of the cafeteria and shouted, “You guys have it all wrong! Max isn’t what you think. He’s been dealing with stuff none of you know about, so just stop!” The room went silent. I felt every eye on me, and my face burned with embarrassment. But then Max, who was sitting at a corner table, gave me a small nod of gratitude.
From that day forward, things began to change. Max still wasn’t an outgoing person, but little by little, more people started talking to him. When someone tried to bring up the old rumors, I was quick to shut them down. Max and I became friends, and he even opened up to me about his sister’s recovery. I realized how easy it had been to judge him based on hearsay, and how wrong we had been. Sometimes, people build walls not to keep others out, but to protect themselves. I never made that mistake again.

Imagine you’ re walking across rolling hills, with warm sunshine and the singing of birds all around. This peaceful scene is increasingly rare in the modern world. Our natural soundscape (声景) are falling silent as bird populations decline. Birds are often colorful and their song provides the soundtrack to our outdoor activities. Listening to a dawn chorus should be like listening to a full orchestra.
Our study explores the link between birdsong and people, especially on English vineyards (葡萄园). We surveyed bird communities on 21 vineyards and measured the characteristics of their soundscapes. Our results showed that vineyards with more bird species had louder and more complex soundscapes. A vineyard with various birds is expected to sound more diverse and louder than a vineyard with just a few pigeons, crows and chickens. But does the silencing of our soundscapes matter to us The answer is yes. There is growing evidence about the health benefits of spending time in nature, including reducing risks of heart disease and anxiety.
So as part of our research, we explored the experience of 186 wine-tour participants across three vineyards with varying soundscapes. We also fixed hidden speakers in vineyard soundscapes, which played the songs of five additional bird species. This was designed to see how participants’ engagement with nature would be affected by increasing the diversity of birds and songs.
The result is surprising. Paul Harrison, the manager at a vineyard summarized: “What surprised us was the significant impact that birdsong has on people.” Visitors who experienced louder and more complex sounds reported that they had enjoyed the sounds more. They also felt more connected to nature, satisfied with their tour, and freer from work, routine and responsibility.
Our study is a clear demonstration of the direct effect that birdsong has on our well-being. So, we hope businesses and people will be inspired to invest in bird conservation and promote nature engagement in man-made settings, such as workplace courtyards or restaurants with outdoor seating.
4.What is happening to the natural soundscape in the modern world
A.It’ s being drowned out by urban noises.
B.It’ s losing its life due to fewer bird sounds.
C.It’ s getting more varied with new sounds.
D.It’ s coming back to life with natural sounds.
5.Why did the researchers fix hidden speakers in the vineyard
A.To increase the bird population.
B.To make the vineyard more appealing.
C.To drive away some undesirable bird species.
D.To study birdsong’s impact on nature connection.
6.What can we learn from the result of the research
A.People prefer vineyards with more complex soundscapes.
B.Bird conservation is crucial for vineyard managers.
C.Artificial settings with nature engagement are rewarding.
D.Louder sounds alone lead to higher satisfaction in people.
7.What would be the best title for the text
A.Vineyards: A New Home for Birds.
B.Wine-tour: A Natural Feast for Ears.
C.Birdsong: Connecting People With Nature.
D.Soundscapes: Fading Tunes in Nature.
Everyone has their own way to “recharge” their sense of well-being — something that makes them feel good physically, emotionally, and spiritually even if they aren’t consciously aware of it. Personally, I know that few things can improve my day as quickly as a walk around the block or even just getting up from my desk and doing some push-ups. A hike through the woods is ideal when I can make it happen. But that’s me. It’s not simply that I enjoy these activities but also that they make me feel better and clear my mind.
Mental health and physical health are closely connected. No kidding — what’s good for the body is often good for the mind. Knowing that what you can do physically has this effect for you will change your day and your life.
Physical activity has many mental health benefits. These have been published in the journal Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and include improved brain health and cognitive function — the ability to think, if you will, a reduced risk of tension and worry, improved sleep and overall quality of life. Although not a cure for all, increasing physical activity directly contributes to improved mental health and better overall health and well-being.
Learning how to manage stress and getting screened for depression are simply good prevention practices in daily life. Awareness is especially important at this time of year, when disruptions to healthy habits and choices can be more likely and more annoying.
Shorter days and colder temperatures have a way of breaking up the normal life — as do the holidays, with both their joys and their stresses. When the rich sunshine and clear skies of temperate(温和的) months give way to terrible weather, less daylight, and festive gatherings, it may happen unconsciously or seem natural to be less physically active. However, that tendency is just why it’s so important that we are ever more mindful of our physical and emotional health and how we can maintain both at this time of year.
8.What is the author’s regular way of “recharging” his well-being
A.Working out in a gym. B.Staying and doing nothing.
C.Hiking in the woods. D.Slight exercise.
9.What can we learn from paragraph 3
A.The importance of good sleep.
B.The ways to improve brain health.
C.The mental health benefits of physical activity.
D.The bond between mental health and physical health.
10.What does the underlined word “disruption” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Achievement. B.Destruction. C.Advantage. D.Development.
11.Why does the author mention shorter days, colder temperatures and festivals
A.To persuade us to enjoy our current lives. B.To show useful advice on keeping healthy.
C.To describe unexpected things in our lives. D.To remind us to care about well-being anytime.
D
Recently, I observed how socio-cultural forces can restrict personal choices, as some people fear rejection from their communities if they act differently. Social cohesion (融合) is woven into the fabric of our lives, so in closely integrated communities, that would mean losing everything.
Making choices that differ from those of most people around us is definitely a risky strategy to take. Anything that distracts us from the safety and comfort brought by the sense of belonging shakes us to our very core. We are a complex social species, and there are social rules that create stability. We, like other social species, will move toward an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS), a behavioral strategy in a population that, once established, cannot easily be replaced by alternative strategies because it provides a high level of stability and success. We often make decisions by unconsciously reviewing what people around us are doing, and then do the same thing. Being different is uncomfortable.
However, there are always individuals who bring innovation. Think about the first macaque monkey on an isolated island that walked into the water carrying a sweet potato and washed it in the ocean. Over time, other monkeys in its group adopted this behavior, which became a part of their culture and has even been passed down through generations. This kind of new approach requires courage, creativity, a strong will, and the willingness to be rejected. Innovation can solve a problem in a new way, create a social and cultural impact felt by later generations, or result in the grandest love you might ever encounter.
Life is scary, and life is uncertain. It’s natural to try to hold on to what we know to feel secure. But someone recently said to me, “If all you know extends only the length of your nose, you don’t know very much at all.” True understanding requires looking beyond personal experiences or surroundings to gain a more complete view of the world. Not being able to choose freely or be different holds back everyone’s progress.
12.What does “that” underlined in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Weakening one’s bonds with the community.
B.Relying on the protection of one’s community.
C.Taking a different path within one’s community
D.Being frightened by the rejection from their communities.
13.What is the psychological effect of being different from others
A.It causes discomfort. B.It increases creativity.
C.It strengthens social bonds. D.It improves decision-making skills.
14.Why does the author mention the macaque monkey
A.To show that monkeys have complex social rule.
B.To explain the motivation behind monkey evolution.
C.To highlight the importance of community support.
D.To demonstrate the power of individual innovation.
15.What is the main argument of the text
A.Creativity ensures community stability.
B.Being different may encourage progress.
C.Success comes from facing the fear of rejection.
D.Humans and monkeys share similar social structures.

Have you ever noticed that some songs start with a “one, two, three, four” You can hear it in songs of many artists. 36 They count (aloud or in their heads) to make sure that they all start the song together and everyone stays on the same beat.
37 The steady beat of a song is one pattern, but there are others, like the distance between notes.Notes in music form patterns by their distance from each other and when played together, some notes sound better due to these mathematical relationships.
In written music, musicians use fractions (分数) to understand the rhythm.Such fractions, like 4/4, show how many beats are in each measure and which notes get one beat. 38 For example, in 4/4 time, a whole note lasts for four beats, a half note for two, and a quarter note for one.Smaller notes, like eighth and sixteenth notes, are fractions of a beat.
Research shows that students who play an instrument often perform better on math tests, but scientists are not sure why. 39 Students who are interested in music are generally more disciplined and motivated, contributing to their better academic performance.
Music is great for the brain.Playing an instrument engages multiple parts of the brain at once—musicians need to use the brains to see the music, hear the note and touch the instrument in just the right ways to make sounds. 40
Music might help you with math.Math might help you with music. But whether or not they do, we can have fun learning both!
A.Music is full of patterns.
B.But why are they counting
C.It might be that music helps with math.
D.This makes music learning excellent exercise for brains.
E.Sometimes we play more than one note at a time.
F.In fact, math is behind almost everything in music!

On Sunday, Mike and his mother Rose went to Grandma Alondra’s house for lunch. Alondra had prepared Mike’s favorite meal. “Mike’s school prom (舞会) is approaching, Mum,” Rose told Alondra. “Do you still have that tailor’s contact who owned that old shop in town I want to get a suit tailored for Mike. ” “Oh! I do! ” Alondra laughed. “So, Mike, who’s going to be your date ” she asked. “Nobody. I haven’t found anyone. So, I might not go, ” Mike said, his eyes fixed on his phone.
Alondra said, “You kids are so lucky to have the prom and everything. I’ve never gone to one! ” “Really, Mum ” Rose asked with a surprised look. “Well, yes. But that’s an old, old story! Let’s not go there, ” Alondra said. “The thing is, Mike, you should definitely go and have a good time. ”
It was then that Rose had an idea. She asked Mike to take Alondra as his date to the prom. Mike disliked the idea. As a teenager, and as the most popular boy at school, he didn’t want to take his grandmother to the prom. He was afraid the other students would laugh at him. However, he couldn’t find a reason to turn this down. Not a single one. Most importantly, he loved Alondra.

Personally, I know that few things can improve my day as quickly as a walk around the block or even just getting up from my desk and doing some push-ups.(每个人都有自己的方式来“充电”他们的幸福感——一些让他们在身体上、情感上和精神上感觉良好的事情,即使他们并没有意识到这一点。

When the rich sunshine and clear skies of temperate(温和的) months give way to terrible weather, less daylight, and festive gatherings, it may happen unconsciously or seem natural to be less physically active. However, that tendency is just why it’s so important that we are ever more mindful of our physical and emotional health and how we can maintain both at this time of year.(白天变短、气温变冷会破坏正常的生活——就像假期一样,既有欢乐,也有压力。

Dear Chris,
I’m excited to share that our class won the “Sea Exploration” poster competition organized by the school English newspaper!
Our team spent weeks brainstorming creative ways to combine marine biodiversity with sustainable technology. We used recycled materials and painted vibrant coral reefs alongside futuristic underwater research stations. It was challenging but fun to balance art and science.
This experience taught me the power of teamwork and the urgency of ocean conservation. I’ve grown more curious about humans’ role in protecting marine ecosystems. Let’s discuss your thoughts on this topic sometime!
Best wishes,
Li Hua

As Mike walked into the school hall with his grandmother, the whole place fell silent. As all eyes locked onto him in disbelief, Mike could practically feel the weight of their stares. There was laughter in the air, but he did his best to brush it off. Still, he couldn’t shake off the embarrassment. Then, a girl’s voice cut through the tension: “Isn’t it kind of cool that Mike brought his grandmother ” Another agreed, “Yeah, it’s sweet.” And when one girl approached Alondra and praised her dress, Alondra felt a rush of warmth fill her heart.
Seeing Alondra was welcomed, Mike was relieved, and soon the party got started. Alondra turned out to be a star on the dance floor, even challenging some of the teenagers. She and Mike teamed up for the fun games, defeating everyone! She also shared a dance with the school director. As they headed home, Alondra couldn’t contain her excitement: “This is so much fun, Mike! Thanks for bringing me. It’s the best, best day of my life!” Seeing her bright smile, Mike realized he’d made the right call. Making your grandparents happy is the least you can do.
