It all started this morning just before noon, Mrs. White was returning from the supermarket with her daughter and a friend, their neighbor. They stopped on the stairway of their building at their fifth-floor apartment. The neighbor opened her door first, and little Lily ran past her. She knew the apartment well, since she had visited it many times. The friend put down her keys and shopping bags, and turned back a moment to Mrs. White.
At that moment, there was a sudden gust of wind and the door to the apartment was closed. Lily was inside, alone.
Then the friend remembered that she had left her kitchen window open. She and Mrs. White rushed to Mrs. White’s apartment and telephoned the police. But there was no time to get help in opening the neighboring apartment. They could see that Lily was already leaning out of the kitchen window. She had climbed onto a chair, and soon she was climbing out onto the window sill (窗台).
Mrs. White called to Lily to go back inside. But the little girl did not understand the danger and did not want to go back. She only waved to her mother,
Then she lost her balance and her feet slipped off the window sill. She managed to hold on for a while with her hands, but then she became weak and she began to be afraid. Her mother screamed for help, and now Lily was crying loudly.
And then she could hold on no longer, Fortunately, several people had run out into the street on hearing all the screaming. They saw the child hanging onto the window sill and got ready to catch her. Down she fell, five long stories and landed safe and sound in the arms of three strong men. They were Luis, Augusto, and Alfonso Nunes, father and sons, who live in the next building in her community. When they heard the screams, they rushed out of their home.
“I never thought we’d do it,” said Alfonso afterwards, “But I kept thinking: if we don’t catch her, she’ll die and I’ll feel sad and guilty all my life.”

The complexities of human relations are difficult enough for adults to handle and they have at least some idea of the rules. Children have yet to learn those rules. Infants are, nevertheless, able quickly to identify close relationships between other people. How do they manage to do this In a paper just published in Science, Ashley Thomas of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology proposes a partial answer: saliva (唾液).
Two groups of children were recruited to test whether children interpret saliva sharing as indicating a “thick” relationship, one consisting of babies aged between eight and ten months, and the other comprising toddlers aged between 16 and 18 months. The tests were conducted over video link.
Each child was shown a clip (片段) of an adult interacting with a puppet (木偶), followed by a clip of that puppet in sadness while the same adult, and also a stranger looked on. When the interaction in the first clip appeared to involve the sharing of saliva with puppet and adult taking successive bites from an orange — both groups of children looked mainly at that same adult in the second clip, and not the stranger. This indicated their belief that the adult would offer comfort to the puppet. However, when the interaction in the first clip was friendly but less thick, such as passing a ball back and forth, the children had equal expectations of both adults when shown the second clip, Saliva sharing seems, then, indicative of closeness.
That conclusion was reinforced by subsequently replacing the puppet with a different one and repeating the second test. In this case the children showed no consistent expectation about which adult would intervene to relieve the puppet’s sadness. It thus seems to have been the act of sharing an orange with a specific puppet that generated an expectation of future behavior, rather than any inborn characteristics of the adults involved.
The research was conducted in the United States. It is hoped that future runs will reach beyond that country’s borders. The ethnographic (人种志的) literature suggests saliva sharing is a widespread phenomenon. But seeing how practice varies from place to place might reveal some fascinating details.
33.What is the purpose of studying saliva sharing in the research
A.To analyze its effects on adult-infant relationships.
B.To explore how children perceive relationship closeness.
C.To understand its significance in social interactions.
D.To demonstrate how the rules of human relations work.
34.What did the children expect when the first clip involved saliva sharing
A.The puppet would seek comfort from the adult.
B.The stranger would relieve the puppet’s sadness.
C.The same adult would show care to the puppet.
D.The puppet would interact more with the adult.
35.What does the underlined word “reinforced” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Strengthened. B.Changed. C.Affected. D.Challenged.
36.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.A major limitation of the study. B.An explanation of the research method.
C.A possible reason for the study findings. D.An expectation for future studies.
None of us like to think we’d walk on by when someone needed our help. But sometimes we behave in ways we wouldn’t expect when encountering a situation we are unsure about. Research from the British Heart Foundation has suggested that a third of people would not perform first aid if they saw someone collapse on the street, with some even admitting they wouldn’t call an ambulance. This can sometimes mean that no one helps when someone desperately needs it. However, a lot of tragic events urge us to take immediate action.
One of the most famous examples of this is the tragic case of Kitty Genovese who was fatally stabbed (刺、捅) in Kew Gardens, New York, in 1964. Follow-up investigations concluded that several people saw or heard what was happening, but did nothing to intervene. This has been termed the “bystander effect”—a well-known psychological phenomenon that individuals are less likely to offer help to someone when other people are present. The more people there are, the less likely they are to help.
There are various factors contributing to this effect — people think that others will get involved or intervene. Afterwards people often say they did not feel qualified or senior or important enough to be the one to intervene. It is also partly down to “pluralistic ignorance” — since everyone is not reacting to the emergency, they don’t need to either; it’s not serious because no one else is doing anything.
Self-awareness is the best antidote to it. When encountering an emergency, think to yourself how you would behave if you were on your own. Ignore everyone else and how they are behaving and go with your instinct (直觉) —if you’d call an ambulance, do it. If you’d run for help, do it. If that’s how you would have behaved when you were on your own then that’s probably the right course of action.
37.According to the first paragraph, what would some people do when someone needs help
A.To behave in proper ways. B.To rush to give a hand.
C.To give immediate first aid. D.To hesitate to intervene.
38.Which of the following statements about “bystander effect” is correct
A.It is a rare psychological phenomenon.
B.People are unwilling to help for lack of qualification.
C.Someone will step in when more people are gathering.
D.It results from “pluralistic ignorance” to some degree.
39.What does the underlined word “antidote” in the last paragraph mean
A.Devotion. B.Introduction. C.Solution. D.Resistance.
40.What is the best title for the text
A.Don’t Be a Bystander B.Stay away from Emergencies
C.Raise Awareness of First Aid D.Don’t Intervene in “Bystander Effect”
Gratitude is more than just saying “thank you” to someone who has helped us or given us a gift. 41 And this positive emotion can be good for our health — our emotional and physical health, as well as the health of our relationships.
Let’s start by looking at the mental health benefits of expressing gratitude. There have been many studies showing that writing a gratitude letter to another person improves mental health. One reason for this is that gratitude stops us from thinking about negative emotions over and over again. 42
But even if we don’t share our writing with anyone, the act of completing the exercise alone makes us happier and more satisfied with life. 43 As we are essentially training our brain to be more in tune with noticing the posit ve, after several weeks or months, this becomes more intuitive (直觉的). And so, the more we express gratitude, the more positive we feel.
44 There are studies linking a gratitude practice to better sleep quality, better eating habits, and reduced inflammation (炎症) in people who have had heart problems.
So gratitude is clearly good for us, but is it also good for the people in our lives
The simple answer is yes. Gratitude is about feeling valued and helping others feel valued too. 45 And that’s on top of all the other ways — be it with family, partners, friends or even colleges. Maybe we should all stop counting sheep or counting calories and start counting our blessings instead.
A.And this gets better with time.
B.Gratitude appears to have a lasting effect.
C.Gratitude can also make us feel good in our bodies.
D.Feeling valued can help build stronger relationships.
E.People who regularly express gratitude are more patient.
F.It redirects our attention so that we focus on positive emotions.
G.It is a deeper appreciation for someone or something that makes us feel a positive emotion.
Why Do We Get Our Best Ideas in the Shower
Creativity sometimes requires taking a step back. Activities like showering or walking can help. When you’re struggling with a problem that feels unsolvable and then somewhere between shampoo and conditioner, you find the answer in the shower. Doing something mindless like showering, we can find a creative solution. Researchers at the University of Virginia call it “the shower effect”.
They have found that mildly engaging tasks like showering or walking can boost the most creativity. Creative idea generation requires that one should strike a balance between focused thinking which limits originality and random associations which are often irrelevant to our creative problems.
People in the study weren’t actually showering. Instead, researchers tried to imitate (模仿) the engagement level of a shower or walking through videos that required a certain level of engagement. Participants either saw a video that was considered boring—two men folding laundry—or a video of the famous scene in a familiar movie. After that, participants had 45 seconds before researchers asked them to list creative uses for a brick or a paperclip.
This research highlights the importance of stepping away from a problem to solve it, says Alice Flaherty, at Harvard Medical School. She says her students could learn a thing or two from the research because time away from a task is what helps us focus afterwards. “Some of my graduate students are so dedicated that they won’t get up from their desks until they have a creative idea, which is counterproductive because they don’t ever let their brains step back and take a rest”.
But Flaherty also holds that researchers need to control physical arousal (唤起). “They say that when you’re out walking or showering it’s mildly engaging to the brain, but it might just be that it’s physically arousing,” she says. “An activity increases your heart rate, which might make you think you have the best idea. While showering might promote creativity, it might not be for the reasons they state.” But whatever the reason, Flaherty agrees that when you’re stuck and can’t seem to come up with a creative solution, stepping away to do something completely unrelated could get your juices flowing.
46.What is “the shower effect”
47.What does creative idea generation require
48.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, and then underline it and explain why.
Alice Flaherty holds that her dedicated graduate students need to sit in front of the desks all day to come up with a creative idea.
49.In addition to showering or walking, what other activities may help you find a creative solution in your daily life Why (In about 40 words)

根据Course delivery部分中“The assessment criteria will be presented to you at the start of the course, so you can approach your studies with confidence and motivation, knowing what is expected of you and how to meet those expectations.”(评估标准将在课程开始时呈现给你,这样你就可以充满信心和动力地进行学习,知道对你的期望是什么以及如何满足这些期望。)

根据最后一段中“They saw the child hanging onto the window sill and got ready to catch her. Down she fell five long stories and landed safe and sound in the arms of three strong men. They were Luis, Augusto and Alfonso Nunes, father and sons, who live in the next building in her community.(他们看见那个孩子吊在窗台上,就准备去接她。 故选A。
根据倒数第四段中“She managed to hold on for a while with her hands, but then she became weak and she began to be afraid.(她设法用手坚持了一会儿,但随后她变得虚弱,开始害怕)”可知,Lily又害怕又虚弱,无法抓住窗台。故选B。
根据倒数第二段中““I never thought we’d do it” said Alfonso afterwards. “But I kept thinking, if we don’t catch her, she’ll die and I’ll feel sad and guilty all my life.”(“我从没想过我们会这么做,”Alfonso后来说。

根据文章第一段中的“Children have yet to learn those rules. Infants are, nevertheless, able quickly to identify close relationships between other people. How do they manage to do this In a paper just published in Science, Ashley Thomas of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology proposes a partial answer: saliva B“To explore how children perceive relationship closeness.(探索儿童如何感知关系的亲近程度)”与原文意思一致。故选B。
根据文章第三段中的“When the interaction in the first clip appeared to involve the sharing of saliva-with puppet and adult taking successive bites from an orange—both groups of children looked mainly at that same adult in the second clip, and not the stranger. This indicated their belief that the adult would offer comfort to the puppet.(在第一段视频中,互动内容似乎是唾液的传递——小木偶和成年人依次从一个橙子上咬下一口——在第二段视频中,两组儿童主要都看向了同一个成年人,而不是那个陌生人。)”以及“This indicated their belief that the adult would offer comfort to the puppet.
根据文章第四段中的“That conclusion was reinforced by subsequently replacing the puppet with a different one and repeating the second test.(这一结论得到了进一步的……,因为随后又换上了一个不同的木偶,并再次进行了第二次测试。)”以及后文的“In this case the children showed no consistent expectation about which adult would intervene to relieve the puppet’s sadness. It thus seems to have been the act of sharing an orange with a specific puppet that generated an expectation of future behavior, rather than any inborn characteristics of the adults involved.( 在这种情况下,孩子们对于哪位成年人会出来干预以缓解木偶的悲伤并没有形成一致的看法。 故选A。
根据文章最后一段中的“It is hoped that future runs will reach beyond that country’s borders. The ethnographic (人种志的)literature suggests saliva sharing is a widespread phenomenon. But seeing how practice varies from place to place might reveal some fascinating details.(人们希望未来的研究能够拓展到该国以外的地区。 D“An expectation for future studies.(对未来研究的期望)”与原文意思一致。

根据第一段中“But sometimes we behave in ways we wouldn’t expect when encountering a situation we are unsure about. Research from the British Heart Foundation has suggested that a third of people would not perform first aid if they saw someone collapse on the street, with some even admitting they wouldn’t call an ambulance.
根据第三段“There are various factors contributing to this effect — people think that others will get involved or intervene. Afterwards people often say they did not feel qualified or senior or important enough to be the one to intervene. It is also partly down to “pluralistic ignorance” — since everyone is not reacting to the emergency, they don’t need to either; it’s not serious because no one else is doing anything.
根据最后一段“Self-awareness is the best antidote to it.
根据第二段中“This has been termed the “bystander effect”—a well-known psychological phenomenon that individuals are less likely to offer help to someone when other people are present. The more people there are, the less likely they are to help. 及最后一段中“If you’d run for help, do it. If that’s how you would have behaved when you were on your own then that’s probably the right course of action.

41.根据上文“Gratitude is more than just saying “thank you” to someone who has helped us or given us a gift.
42.根据上文“One reason for this is that gratitude stops us from thinking about negative emotions over and over again.
43.根据上文“But even if we don’t share our writing with anyone, the act of completing the exercise alone makes us happier and more satisfied with life. 故选A。
44.根据下文“There are studies linking a gratitude practice to better sleep quality, better eating habits, and reduced inflammation (炎症) in people who have had heart problems.
45.根据上文“The simple answer is yes. Gratitude is about feeling valued and helping others feel valued too. 能够承接上文,介绍了感受到被重视的好处,且与下文“be it with family, partners, friends or even colleges (无论是与家人、伴侣、朋友还是大学)”相呼应。故选D。
46.“The shower effect” is the idea that when you’re struggling with a problem that feels unsolvable, you may find the answer in doing something mindless like showering.
47.It requires that one should strike a balance between focused thinking which limits originality and random associations which are often irrelevant to our creative problems. 48.Alice Flaherty holds that her dedicated graduate students need to sit in front of the desks all day to come up with a creative idea. Because she agrees that stepping away from a problem can help solve a problem. 49.Watching a boring video or a famous movie clip can help me relax my mind. So can some cardio-exercise. Because they allow me to have creative ideas.
根据文章第一段“When you’re struggling with a problem that feels unsolvable and then somewhere between shampoo and conditioner, you find the answer in the shower. Doing something mindless like showering, we can find a creative solution. Researchers at the University of Virginia call it “the shower effect”.(当你纠结于一个感觉无法解决的问题时,在洗发水和护发素之间,你会在淋浴中找到答案。 故答案为“The shower effect” is the idea that when you’re struggling with a problem that feels unsolvable, you may find the answer in doing something mindless like showering.
根据文章第二段“Creative idea generation requires that one should strike a balance between focused thinking which limits originality and random associations which are often irrelevant to our creative problems.(创造性想法的产生要求人们在限制原创性的集中思考和通常与创造性问题无关的随机联想之间取得平衡。)” It requires that one should strike a balance between focused thinking which limits originality and random associations which are often irrelevant to our creative problems.
根据文章倒数第二段““Some of my graduate students are so dedicated that they won’t get up from their desks until they have a creative idea, which is counterproductive because they don’t ever let their brains step back and take a rest”.(“我的一些研究生太专注了,直到他们有了一个有创意的想法,他们才会离开办公桌,这是适得其反的,因为他们从来没有让自己的大脑停下来休息一下。”)”可知,Flaherty认为她的研究生不应该每天坐在桌子前相处一个有创意的点子,故应将题干中的“hold(认为)”划线,因为上文“This research highlights the importance of stepping away from a problem to solve it, says Alice Flaherty, at Harvard Medical School.(哈佛医学院的Alice Flaherty说,这项研究强调了远离问题去解决问题的重要性。)” Alice Flaherty holds that her dedicated graduate students need to sit in front of the desks all day to come up with a creative idea. Because she agrees that stepping away from a problem can help solve a problem.
Watching a boring video or a famous movie clip can help me relax my mind. So can some cardio-exercise. Because they allow me to have creative ideas.
