A Great Road Trip to Take in Your Lifetime
Highway 1 isn’t the fastest route from San Francisco to Los Angeles, but it’s the most enjoyable. Driving down the Pacific Coast Highway is a famous trip in California. It shows you the best views and popular places in the state. San Luis Obispo county is a nice place with a relaxed feel. By the time you reach Santa Barbara, you’ll be ready to relax on the tree-lined beaches all the way to Santa Monica.
Where to stop: You can see Monterey Peninsula’s pretty coastline from the road, but Point Lobos State Natural Reserve has even better views. In Morro Bay, look for sand dollars (饼海胆) at Morro Strand State Beach. This beach is a hidden treasure with six miles of sand and is next to the town’s main rock, Morro Rock, which is 581 feet tall. Just save time to explore the surprising, over-the-top gardens of the late singer Ganna Walska’s former house at Lotusland in Santa Barbara.
Where to eat: Near the famous surfing spot in Santa Cruz, Steamer Lane Supply is a place to go for tasty fish tacos For dinner, try to get a seat at Chez Noir in Carmel. It’s a fancy restaurant with a lively atmosphere. In Santa Barbara, La Paloma Cafe has a menu that reminds you of old California. Their cream is really good.
Where to stay: A big bright “Motel” sign shows River Lodge. It’s a cool place in Paso Robles with a pool and bar for grown-ups. It’s also very friendly for dogs. Inn at Mattei’s Tavern is a comfortable place in Los Olivos, a popular wine area. Waypoint Ventura has old-fashioned travel trailers (拖车) that are walking distance from the beach.

Would you take a trip if you couldn’t use your cellphone A new tour company called Off the Grid is asking travellers to put their cellphones away and not even use them for photos. The company founder, Zach Beattie, is developing his business, using money he saved from a tech job at a mapping company. He’s hired guides for every trip but will help lead the first few himself.
The first trip is to Lisbon, Portugal, in July. It takes 7 to 10 days, with small groups of up to 16 people. Prices range from $1,500 to $1,650, including accommodations, meals and ground transportation. The plan includes at least three excursions (远足) and two social events, with an emphasis on unique experiences over bucket-list sightseeing. The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach, a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.
“When you’re somewhere new, there’s a lot to see and a lot of cool and interesting people to meet,” Beattie said. “Your phone can distract (使分心) you.” The phone ban won’t be enforced quite as strictly as it seems at first glance. “We want it to be voluntary,” he said. “We’re not collecting phones and throwing them in a locked trunk. It’s held by you, but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that’s checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”
Tour-goers also get a “dumbphone” without Internet access that’s loaded with numbers for group leaders and other participants, both for emergencies and to promote socializing. Participants may bring regular cameras, but Beattie is hiring a photographer for each tour so there will be plenty of photos to remember the trip. Once the trip is over, participants will have access to those photos for use in social media posts.
4.What can be learned about Zach Beattie
A.He set up his business at his own expense.
B.He is always guiding every trip personally.

D.He used to earn his living in a tour company.
5.What do we know about the Lisbon trip
A.The trip features sightseeing.
B.Participants live in homestays.
C.Air ticket is covered in the cost.
D.Tourists experience water sports.
6.What does Zach Beattie expect the participants to do
A.Lock their phones in a trunk.
B.Post their photos on social media.
C.Free themselves from their phones.
D.Shift their focus onto dumbphones.
7.What can tour-goers do with the dumbphone
A.Take photos. B.Access the Internet.
C.Record the trip. D.Contact group members.
Is social media really making young people antisocial A surprising new study finds that children and young adults who use social platforms the most are actually more active in the real world than others!
The new findings come from a long-term project called the Trondheim Early Secure Study. Researchers collected information from about 800 children and young adults when they were 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 years old. This included interviews about each child’s use of social media from year to year. The goal was to determine if using social media affects a young person’s overall social skills.
To the team’s surprise, participants frequently using these platforms did not see their social skills reduced. “On the contrary, we find that people who use social media a lot spend more time with friends offline than those who tend to limit their screen time,” says Professor Silje Steinsbekk from the Norwegian University of Science and Technolog’s Department of Psychology.
However, social media can present challenges for children and teens. Although it offers a convenient and comfortable way for those with social anxiety to communicate, it can also lead to addiction and misuse. Studies have suggested that young people with anxiety are more easily affected by the negative effects of social media, which can worsen their symptoms and harm their mental health. Therefore, it is important for parents to monitor their children’s online activity and usage.
Despite the risks to some, the team says their findings debunk the belief that social media causes young people to become socially isolated. In fact, their frequent use of social platforms may actually give them more opportunities to connect with old and new friends and set up chances to go out and socialize outdoors.
8.Who may probably spend more time socializing offline according to the study
A.A boy who avoids making friends online.
B.A girl seldom going online.
C.A teenager who is a regular user of social media.
D.A new parent experiencing social anxiety.
9.What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A.Negative emotions cause teens to misuse social media.
B.Social media is two-sided for young people with anxiety.
C.Kids are more easily influenced by social media than adults.
D.Online communication can help improve people’s mental health.
10.What does the underlined word “debunk” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Challenge. B.Confirm. C.Assume. D.Explain.
11.Which title best summarizes the main finding of the study
A.Screen time has no connection to real-world social skills
B.Parents should limit social media to protect teen mental health
C.Social media causes isolation and anxiety in all young people
D.Frequent users of social media engage more in offline social activities
It is always difficult when we are exposed to someone who has a different opinion than our own. When opinions differ, there is often a conflict. This is where much of the conflict with adults and teens begins. Therefore, it is important to always make the difference clear between fact and opinion. Opinions change, facts always remain the same.
I have found that it does absolutely no good to tell someone they’re wrong. I have found that to be more effective is to help someone see the consequences of their behavior for themselves. If you don’t know there is the cliff, why would you ever be concerned about being close to the edge
I dealt with a teen today who was involved in some gangster (歹徒) activities. This girl was raised in a good home with concerned parents. However, other interests have taken over in her life. Friends have become everything. These friends come from different families with different values. This is where the conflict has appeared in her life. The challenge for the rest of us is helping this girl see how and where her new interests will take her. We have felt mild success as relationships of trust are built and improved.
In the end, however, the teen has to make a choice regarding this conflict. It is important for adults to remember how serious this choice is. For some this can feel like a choice between life and death. It’s easy for the rest of us to be casual about this because the right choice seems so obvious to us. It is important to know it is much different to this young person who is still developing and searching. Therefore, it is important that the adult should do everything possible to help the teen be fully informed about the choice before them. Provide choices and show how making different choices will improve things and provide security for the teen now and in the future.
The choice to go with the crowd or with the few can be a very difficult one to make. I believe it is absolutely essential that we never give up on these kids. Our very own future is absolutely at key point any time we advise and guide the youth.
12.From paragraph 1 we know the gap between father and son lies in that _________.
A.facts always remain the same
B.opinions are always different from facts
C.different opinions result from their conflict
D.they have a disagreement about the same fact
13.What contributes to the girl’s crime according to the text
A.Different values. B.Unconcerned parents.
C.Her poor family. D.Gangster activities
14.Adults should try their best to help teens make a choice regarding the conflict because _________.
A.the wrong choice will lead to complete failure in the future
B.the choice is difficult to make for still developing teens
C.the right choice is easy for adults to see and understand
D.the choice made by teens determines their life or death
15.Why should the adult never stop helping the teen according to the last paragraph
A.Because the teen won’t give up themselves.
B.Because the adults’ future depends on the youth.
C.Because the adult can give advice and guidance.
D.Because the teen’s future is in danger.
16.It can be inferred from the text that _________.
A.showing the results of their behavior is a good way to help people
B.helping teenagers always means meeting trouble
C.it’s quite easy to keep a good relationship with others
D.it’s hard to make wise choices in our life

When I was asked to take part in forest bathing, I packed a swimsuit, assuming it must involve a refreshing swim in the water. 36
I met Forest Therapy (治疗) guide Melanie Choukas Bradley and several other women who’d come along for the adventure at an urban forest. Here, I began to get it.Forest bathing isn’t a bath.We sat on the banks of the river, but we did not get in the water. 37 We did walk the forest tracks, but we wandered with no destination in mind.
The aim of forest bathing, Choukas Bradley explained, is to slow down and become fully bathed in the natural environment. She helped us tune in to the forest’s smells, tastes and sights. 38 As we passed through the trees, we touched their trunks, feeling the roughness beneath our fingers. We smelled the flowers, each breath being a celebration of nature’s beauty.
There’s a growing body of evidence that shows forest bathing can help boost moods and reduce stress. 39 A 2011 study comparing city walks to forest walks found the forest environment led to greater reductions in blood pressure, despite both activities requiring equal physical effort.
40 Most of human history was spent in environments that lack buildings and walls, and our bodies have adapted to living in the natural world. But today most of us spend much of our life indoors.Perhaps the new forest bathing trend is a recognition that many of us need a little nudge to get back out there.

Having just graduated from high school, I was 18 and living with my parents in Denver, Colorado. That summer I decided to take my most daring trip ever. I wanted to go to Utah to visit a dear friend I'd known for four years. My father had given me a small street motorcycle as a graduation present, and I worked out a plan to ride it to Utah.
I was to get an early start, ride all day, and arrive at my destination (Paradise, Utah) that evening. Arriving in Ogden, Utah in the late afternoon, I looked at my map for another route to save time. A small line on the map indicated an unimproved road heading northeast-straight to the little town of Paradise!
Of course I headed for it. The road quickly became single, dirty lane, winding through fields. As long as it was dry, surely I'd be OK. Suddenly, I lost control of the motorcycle and it fell over. I didn't get hurt because wasn't going fast, but I was puzzled and couldn't figure out what had happened.
It was dark. While my headlight showed me where the road was, I couldn't tell its condition, only that it was smooth. I started again, and once more fell over after a few feet. I looked around and found myself alone in a high mountain field. For the first time during the trip I started to get worried. A few minutes later I couldn't believe what I saw-a pair of headlights bouncing along the road toward me, coming from the direction I was heading for!
The man driving the small truck stopped and asked if I needed any help. Not the type to bother others with my problems, I said I thought I could get where I was going on my own, but thanked him for the offer.

故选A。
根据第二段最后一句“The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach, a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.(行程还包括冲浪课程、海滩瑜伽、一天的帆船航行以及与当地家庭共进晚餐。)”

It’s held by you, but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that’s checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”(‘我们希望这是自愿的,’他说:‘我们不会收集手机,然后把它们扔进锁着的后备箱。
根据最后一段第一句“Tour-goers also get a “dumbphone” without Internet access that’s loaded with numbers for group leaders and other participants, both for emergencies and to promote socializing. (游客们还会得到一个不能上网的“笨手机(非智能手机)”,里面有小组领导和其他参与者的电话号码,既可以用于紧急情况,也可以促进社交。)”可知,游客们还会得到一个不能上网的“笨手机(非智能手机)”,里面有小组领导和其他参与者的电话号码,游客可以用“笨手机(非智能手机)”来联络其他组员。故选D。

【答案】8.C 9.B 10.A 11.D
根据第三段中“On the contrary, we find that people who use social media a lot spend more time with friends offline than those who tend to limit their screen time (恰恰相反,我们发现经常使用社交媒体的人,在线下与朋友相处的时间反而比那些限制屏幕时间的人更多)”可知,根据这项研究,经常使用社交媒体的青少年可能会花更多的时间在线下社交上。故选C项。
根据第四段中“Although it offers a convenient and comfortable way for those with social anxiety to communicate, it can also lead to addiction and misuse. Studies have suggested that young people with anxiety are more easily affected by the negative effects of social media, which can worsen their symptoms and harm their mental health. (虽然社交网络为社交焦虑人群提供了一种便捷舒适的沟通途径,但同时也可能导致成瘾和不当使用等问题。研究表明,有焦虑倾向的年轻人更容易受到社交媒体的负面影响,这些影响可能加剧他们的症状并损害心理健康。)”可推知,社交媒体对焦虑的年轻人来说是两面性的。故选B项。
10.词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“In fact, their frequent use of social platforms may actually give them more opportunities to connect with old and new friends and set up chances to go out and socialize outdoors. (事实上,频繁使用社交平台反而能为年轻人创造更多机会——既能维系旧友关系,又能结识新朋友,同时为他们提供了更多外出进行线下社交的可能性。)”可知,研究结果肯定了频繁使用社交平台对年轻人有好处,因此是“挑战”了“社交媒体导致孤立”的传统观念,画线词意思应该与Challenge“挑战”意思一致。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Is social media really making young people antisocial A surprising new study finds that children and young adults who use social platforms the most are actually more active in the real world than others! After another unsuccessful attempt I finally accepted his help, and we loaded the motorcycle into the back of his truck. He turned around and took me back in the direction he came from. He asked me where I was going and I told him I was going to visit a friend in Paradise. It happened that he had planned to go back to Paradise that evening.
I asked him why he was out there in the field at such a late hour. He told me he was a roadman. He had a feeling that he needed to go down the road, but wasn't sure why. Then he found me. It took us the better part of an hour to make it to the next paved road. All the while I was amazed that he was able and willing to be there. He was so kind that he drove me to my friend's home, which made me less worried. I will always be grateful to him for going out of his way on a dark night to the middle of nowhere to help me.

A research team led by Academicians Chen Xiaoya and Gao Caixia from the Chinese Academy of Sciences has made a significant breakthrough. They have successfully cultivated the world’s first new rice variety capable of producing coenzyme Q10. This achievement was published in the international journal Cell, marking an important step forward in agricultural science.
Coenzyme Q10 plays a crucial role in the energy metabolism (新陈代谢) of human cells. It has antioxidant properties and can protect heart health. As people age, the body’s ability to produce coenzyme Q10 decreases. Traditional rice mainly produces coenzyme Q9, which is different from the coenzyme Q10 our bodies need. To solve this problem, the research team spent several years exploring. They first studied the developmental history of coenzyme Q, then used machine learning to analyze the Coq1 enzyme in plants. Finally, they applied gene-editing technology to rice and successfully created the new variety.
In this new rice variety, the coenzyme Q10 content in the leaves and grains reaches 75% of the total coenzyme Q. In the grains, its content is 5 micrograms per gram, and the rice yield has not decreased. This research demonstrates China’s strength in cultivating functional crops and promotes global thinking on nutrition improvement.
Scientists plan to further study the application of coenzyme Q10 in agriculture. This achievement not only benefits global food security but also provides new ways to improve people’s diet and health. It also shows the potential of gene-editing technology in changing the future pattern of agriculture.
4.What is the special feature of the new rice variety
A.It has a higher output.
B.It has a shorter growth cycle.
C.It has lower requirements for soil.
D.It can produce a crucial nutrient.
5.Why did the research team focus on coenzyme Q10
A.Because it is easy to produce.
B.Because it helps to maintain cell vigor.
C.Because it can greatly increase the rice yield.
D.Because it is widely present in various foods.
6.Which step is not included in cultivating the new rice variety
A.Analyzing the Coq1 enzyme.
B.Applying gene-editing technology.
C.Exploring traditional farming methods.
D.Studying the evolution of coenzyme Q.
7.What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A.The application of the research.
B.The concern about food security.
C.The future pattern of agriculture.
D.The significance of this research.
The growth mindset is the belief that intellectual abilities can be developed and are not fixed, which have received a great deal of attention in schools and among researchers.
According to a study, a teacher’s growth mindset acts as a “support” that can draw out a student's growth mindset at the very beginning and make it maintainable and actionable in the classroom. These teachers may convey how, in their classes, mistakes are learning opportunities, not signs of low ability, and back up this view with assignments and evaluations that reward continual improvement. This could encourage a student to continue acting on their growth mindset.
The study analyzed data from the National Study of Learning Mindset, which was an intervention experiment conducted with a sample of ninth-grade students’ math grades. The present focus on math grades is motivated by the fact that students tend to find math challenging and anxiety inducing, and therefore, a growth mindset might help students face those challenges productively.
In the study, researchers show that the positive effect of a short growth-mindset intervention on ninth-grade students’ math grades was concentrated among students whose teachers themselves had growth mindset. They also found that baseline students — serve as a benchmark (基准点) for comparing and evaluating the progress of other students — who reported more fixed mindset in classrooms showed a significantly positive effect on math grades.
Successfully teaching a growth mindset to students lifted math grades overall, but this was not enough for all students to reap the benefits of a growth-mindset intervention. Supportive classroom contexts also mattered.Students who were in classrooms with teachers who approved of more of a fixed mindset did not show gains in their math grades over ninth grade, whereas the same kind of students in classrooms with more growth-mind set teachers showed meaningful gains.
In general, they view the testing and understanding of the causal effect of teacher mindset as the next step for mindset science. Such research will be challenging to carry out, however.
8.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.How a student's growth-mindset is inspired.
B.Why a teacher's growth mindset is important.
C.How mistakes turn into learning opportunities.
D.Why a student continues acting on growth mindset.
9.What can we learn from the study on ninth-grade students
A.Students were unable to overcome maths challenge.
B.The positive effect was concentrated on all students.
C.The sample size of the experiment was insufficient.
D.Students at baseline were influenced considerably.
10.In the growth-mindset intervention, the teachers' mindset_______.
A.has an influence on the effectiveness
B.is determined by supportive classroom
C.always brings meaningful gains to students
D.plays a decisive role in students' significant gains
11.What is a suitable title for the text
A.The Academic Performance: The Influence of Students’ Mindset
B.Students’ Learning Motivation: The Impact of Teachers’ Mindset
C.Encouraging a Growth Mindset: The Role of Teachers

Reading aloud has become less popular in today’s fast-paced society due to its comparatively slower pace and the multisensory (多感官的) engagement it requires. 37 Let us examine these benefits in greater detail to show why this method is a useful addition to your learning tool kit.
38 When you read silently, you engage mainly with visual and linguistic memory aspects. However, reading aloud adds auditory (听觉的) memory engagement-your ability to remember sounds, such as your voice reading the text.
Reading aloud promotes active engagement. 39 It actively engages your mind, forcing you to process information deeply. This improves understanding by making you interact with the information.
Reading aloud reduces stress. Reading aloud can be quite relaxing and beneficial for reducing stress. When you read aloud, it is like a form of mindfulness that brings your attention to the present. This can be really helpful, especially when you’re dealing with difficult study tasks. 40
Reading aloud creates a personal connection to the text. When you read aloud, you are not merely following a text. 41 Whether you are telling a story, giving a speech or talking about something, the way you show feelings through your voice makes a real difference. It makes the material more interesting and helps you connect with the content.

Computers, smartphones, and audio players are an essential part of students’ everyday lives. That means that whenever students are doing homework, they are going to be faced with the problem of using their devices for purposes other than learning. Instead of concentrating on one task, they are performing multiple tasks.
According to the research by Larry Rosen, published in the journal Computers in Human Science, students spend up to 45% of their homework time on various tasks unrelated to their studies. Students often get distracted by their phones or use their laptops for unauthorized activities. Often, students think that they are able to multitask effectively, without sacrificing their studies. However, the research shows that it is true in only 5% of all cases.
But why do teenagers multitask The answer is simple: multitasking makes us feel good. As the research indicates, the entertainment gained from secondary activities during studies makes learners feel better emotionally.
Watching TV or talking to your friends by email is pleasant and helps students fight boredom while doing homework or listening to a lecture they find boring. Another reason why students multitask is that they simply do not see the negative impact it has on their coursework. Teenagers often overrate their abilities. The seemingly tiny distractions, however, result in a constant need to switch focus and sort out information, injuring the brain by overuse and making the process inefficient.
However, the effects of multitasking are not entirely negative. The research conducted by HKU indicates that people who routinely multitask are able to use their senses in conjunction more easily. Other research also shows that multitasking has a positive effect on the ability to pass judgment and solve problems quickly and efficiently.

One fine day, as I was walking along my regular sidewalk, a small shape in the middle of the path caught my attention. It was a baby squirrel. Its big, bright black eyes seemed to hold a glimmer of anticipation, as if it had a feeling that I’d show up.
With a bit of nervousness, I slowly approached it. Astonishingly, instead of running away, it displayed an incredibly friendly manner, inching nearer and nearer until it even dared to climb onto my shoe. I could feel the light touch of its delicate paws. But soon, my heart sank as I saw it eating a fallen, dead leaf. Clearly, it was starving.
Without a moment’s delay, I whispered gently, “Stay put, little one. I’ll be right back.” I rushed home and grabbed a handful of sunflower seeds, wishing it would still be there. When I hurried back to the spot just 15 minutes later, disappointment washed over me as the spot was empty and silent, with no sign of the squirrel. Feeling rather downcast, I laid the seeds on the ground, still hoping for a miracle.
All of a sudden, the squirrel reappeared out of nowhere, eyes shining with delight at the sight of the food. After eating some seeds, it walked over, first climbing onto my shoe and then, with firm resolve, up my leg. When it finally reached my shoulder, it nestled into my scarf, searching for warmth and a sense of safety.
I decided to take it home and poured my heart into taking care of it. I surfed the Internet for care tips. To ensure it had proper nourishment, I prepared a special diet. Besides the sunflower seeds it adored, I also mashed up(捣碎) some fresh fruits like apples and bananas. For its sleeping arrangements, I lined a small cardboard box with soft towels, creating a warm and comfortable nest. The next day, I didn’t see the little squirrel after I woke up. Finally, I found it sitting by the window.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

The little squirrel appeared surprisingly quiet. It sat by the window, gazing outside with unblinking eyes, tiny tail twitching slightly. I wondered if it missed the vast sky and the rustling treetops. Softly, I opened the window, letting in the fresh scent of morning dew. To my surprise, it didn’t dart out immediately but turned to nuzzle my palm, as if saying thanks. Then, with a delicate leap, it perched on the windowsill, hesitating for a moment before bounding into the nearest maple tree.
I watched it disappear into the thick leaves. A pang of sadness tugged at my heart, yet I smiled through the ache, knowing it belonged to the wild. Some days later, A flash of gray fur caught my eye. There it was, now bigger, with a fluffy tail glistening in the rain. It bounded toward me, climbing onto my shoe just like before, chattering happily. From then on, it became a regular visitor. The quiet sidewalk had turned into a bridge between two worlds, where a human’s kindness and a squirrel’s trust bloomed into an unspoken bond.

A heritage language is a language that isn’t the “most powerful” language of a region, but is still learned by children in their homes (thus, it’s their heritage). Any language can be a heritage language, depending on the surrounding social context. English, for example, is often a primary language, but could technically be a heritage language if someone’s English-speaking parents moved from, say, the United Kingdom to Japan.
Heritage languages can be someone’s native language, but the two terms aren’t interchangeable. A native language is the language or languages a person learns when they’re very young while heritage languages can be determined by a broad range of social and cultural factors. Usually, people speak their native language very well. Someone’s abilities in their heritage language can vary quite a bit, however. Some people may master it well because they learned it a lot when they were children, while others may speak it but not read it, and still others may struggle with speaking it at all.
The United States has over 56 million Spanish speakers, and a large part of those are heritage learners of the language. A research found that the percentage of people who report speaking Spanish “well” drops from 91 to 82 for first-and second-generation immigrants(移民). While that might seem small, it gets much more evident after that, with third - and fourth-generation immigrants dropping to 47 percent.
There are a couple of reasons why heritage languages—and Spanish in particular—tends to drop off from generation to generation. The first one is that the heritage language is less important to get around in society. When a person needs the majority language to go to school, get a job and interact with most people around them, it’s not surprising that the heritage language might seem less important. Another reason is some parents encourage their children not to use their heritage language. It’s unfortunate but true that speaking another language is still a cause for discrimination(歧视) today.
Heritage languages may have a hard time lasting from generation to generation, but it’s not only a story of decline (衰弱). There are countless people in the world who go out of their way to learn their heritage languages—some learn the heritage language later in life—and help others to do the same. If you’ve ever thought about reconnecting with a heritage language, it’s never too late to get started. There’s no time like the present.
4.How does the author present the issue in paragraph 1
A.By mentioning an expert. B.By explaining a term.
C.By describing a scene. D.By providing data.
5.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The significance of learning heritage language s when little.
B.The variations in people’s abilities to speak heritage languages.
C.The differences between heritage languages and native languages.
D.The similarities between the broad range of social and cultural factors.
6.What is one reason for the decline of Heritage language s in the US
A.Appearance discrimination. B.Generation gap.
C.Varying cultures. D.Losing popularity.
7.What can we know from the last paragraph
A.Parents play a key role in protecting heritage languages.
B.Heritage languages’ difficult time will end in the near future.
C.Efforts have been made towards the heritage languages’ survival.
D.Some people consider it too late to bring heritage languages back to life.
Just off the Florida Keys lies the world’s third-largest coral reef (珊瑚礁), which was once an energetic habitat for millions of plants and animals. But an outbreak of stony coral tissue loss disease threatens to destroy 20 of the 45 species found there, including larger reef-building corals.
“This disease that is burning through the Florida Keys is an unbelievable event that is happening,” said Andrew Stamper, conservation science manager at Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment. “It’s like a wildfire.” Stamper said that would endanger Florida’s fishing industry and food supply. “Unfortunately, we do not know exactly what is causing this,” he said.
In order to save the reef, scientists have moved some species hundreds of miles away to a lab in Orlando. Scientists work to simulate breeding (繁殖) conditions in the lab. The conditions are exactly the same as the living conditions of the coral. The work needs a lot of care, effort and attention to detail. LED lights exactly copy the sun and moon cycles. Volunteers feed the coral in water treated to mimic its real habitat.
“This essentially is a gene bank,” said Jim Kinsler, leader of SeaWorld Orlando. “We’re trying to protect the genetics of these corals so that their offspring(后代)can eventually be returned back to the Florida reef area.”
The task of relocating the lab-grown coral to the sea is also a detailed task. Kinsler, who is part of a team of private and public partners operating the Florida Coral Rescue Center, said, “It’s the first time that many of them have been involved in rescuing an entire ecosystem,”
“We think the real challenge is just growing them out to a size, so we can test them in those waters, test their disease resistance (抵抗力), and then breed the successful corals by the hundreds of thousands literally,” said Andrew Walker, president of the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida.
8.What do we know about the Florida Keys
A.It owns the world’s largest coral reef.
B.A disease broke out among people there.
C.The world’s third-largest coral reef is close to it.
D.It is now the habitat of millions of plants and animals.
9.What do Andrew Stamper’s words mean
A.The root of the disease is unclear.
B.A wildfire broke out in the Florida Keys.
C.The disease will spread across the Earth.
D.The disease has caused a great loss to the locals.
10.What does the underlined word “simulate” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Copy. B.Contrast. C.Escape. D.Feature.
11.What is the purpose of the research according to Andrew Walker
A.To restore the coral in the lab.
B.To sell the coral in the normal size.
C.To make more people involved in protecting the ecosystem.
D.To produce masses of disease-resistant coral back to the sea.
There’s a whole lot of things that people fill their stomachs with. Some of them keep people alive. Some of them taste good to people. Some of them help people win pie-eating contests. Alcohol does none of those things. Why do people keep drinking it And what does it do once it gets to their stomachs
There are all kinds of alcohol molecules(分子), but the one that people most often pour down their throat is ethanol(乙醇). Ethanol is very tiny and it dissolves in water, so it gets into all sorts of places that it’s not supposed to. Alcohol heads for the digestive system. Because it dissolves in water, it can get into the water in the bloodstream. Because ethanol, to a certain extent, can pass through cell membranes(膜). It can go almost anywhere. It spreads through the muscles, and is sweated — unmetabolized(未经新陈代新的) and whole — through the skin. It gets into the heart. It even takes a walk through the brain, and this is the secret of its powers.
Alcohol depresses the nerves, and the nerves affect almost every area of the body. Enough alcohol makes people sleep, so people who become unconscious choke on their own vomit(呕吐物). Most worryingly, enough alcohol can shut down those parts of the brain just like any other parts. People become unconscious and their brains simply forget to breathe.
Alcohol is broken down in the liver. Alcohol doesn’t destroy the liver, but products that the liver breaks the alcohol into do cause damage. A glass of wine per day can not do any harm. Instead, it can prevent heart attacks or can make someone functionally young. And it is kind of nice to know that sometimes, relaxation and cheer can be bottled. All that’s needed is to take care how much alcohol is let into a person’s brain.
12.How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A.By statement. B.By question. C.By arguing. D.By explaining.
13.Why can Alcohol reach the brain
A.Because it can move through water molecules in the blood.
B.Because it is small enough to get through any narrow space.
C.Because it is so light that the bloodstream can transport it.
D.Because it is absorbed only by the cells in the stomach.
14.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.Alcohol affects the work of the nerves.
B.Alcohol has an effect on people’s breath.
C.People are drunk when their brains get drunk.
D.Drinking too much is quite dangerous.
15.From the passage, we can know ________.
A.many people like a drink when they feel relaxed
B.enough alcohol can control the brain activities
C.alcohol damage the liver indirectly
D.proper alcohol may lead to better sleep
16.What suggestion does the author give on drinking alcohol
A.Controlling the time of drinking.
B.Controlling the amount of drinking.
C.Choosing the kind of drink.
D.Choosing the place of drinking.

Many adults are proud to share their fascinations with what others would label as kids’ toys. Mini Brands mystery packs or other blind boxes have become a phenomenon as collectibles for some adults. 37 For others, Legos are on their wishlist encouraged by the brand’s growing number of grown-up sets.
38 Seeking and sparking child-like joy may be part of the appeal, said behavioral therapist Maddy Ellberger. “When something reminds us of a positive memory, we are likely to engage with it because the association recalls those memories.”
39 Clothing brands are also cashing in on nostalgia (怀旧情怀)-from Crocs creating a Lizzie McGuire clog to Lululemon’s Disney collection making a full comeback that includes adults. Barbie isn’t just for kids clothes now either, thanks to the recent film and“Barbie-core”fashion trend.
In addition to the trendy appeal, all these revivals can also touch on a feeling of connection during a time of increased division. But whether that desire for connection is satisfied depends on if you can translate the excitement into real, in-person connection. 40 But having or wearing the same thing is not the actual steps of forming shared identity,” Ellberger said. “And I feel like that’s some of what gets lost, and it isn’t impossible.”
Ellberger has a great idea for this. “You are into a certain trend, like toys. There’s a good chance you’ll find others who are into the same trend. 41 If it was part of everyone’s secret Santa or white elephant — that’s a really cute way of connecting over this,” she said.
A.The craze goes beyond toys.
B.So,what’s with the fascination
C.It’s a great way to form community.
D.Then give these toys to them as holiday gifts.
E.Social media fuels the trend by creating shared experiences.
F.Even stuffed animals are making their way into adults’ homes.
G.Childhood favorites have instead become relevant to adults again.

It is often said that you can not change the environment, but can change yourselves. As the saying goes, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Indeed, the key to success lies in one’s mind. The difference between winners and losers is simple. Winners attribute blows and difficulties to a lack of personal skills or experience, placing importance on internal factors and make continuous efforts to improve and move forward in the right direction. Losers, however, blame on the injustice of opportunity and environment, and focus on external (外部的) and uncontrollable factors. As a result, they often get stuck, complain, wait, and eventually give up.

53 (dot) throughout the park are over 3,000 such pillar rocks, shaped by time and nature. The park is quite small, at just more than 48sq km, further divided into even 54 (small) sections, inviting visitors to explore its highlights with ease.
Trails lie everywhere. The Golden Whip Stream trail is a leisurely option among them. With the crowds 55 (thin) out a few hundred meters into the trail, people can easily fall into step and walk on in complete silence interrupted only by the sound of running water and the occasional 56 (scream) of the brown macaques. These monkeys have learned to recognize humans as potential snack sources, adding 57 touch of lively interaction to the quiet forest.

Growing up, my family had a strict rule about our backyard garden. My parents called it The Sanctuary (圣殿) and it was treated like holy ground. Every flower, leaf, and piece of grass had to be flawless. My mom often said, “Plants are delicate. Admire them, don’t disturb them.”
That summer, my parents had to leave on a business trip for two months, leaving me alone to look after the house. Before they left, my mom reminded me, “Remember, don’t touch anything in The Sanctuary.” I nodded, not knowing how that simple promise would soon fall apart.
One afternoon, as I wandered into the backyard, I stopped to admire the perfectly arranged rows of flowers. Then my curiosity got the better of me. I reached out and touched one. It felt strangely firm, like plastic. I pulled it gently, and the whole flower came off, showing a metal wire underneath. Shocked, I checked other plants. They were not real flowers!
Anger boiled inside me. My parents always talked about respecting nature, yet they had built a perfect, lifeless garden. I couldn’t stand it. Looking at the fake flowers, an idea formed in my mind.
Without hesitation, I grabbed a small spade (铲) from the toolbox and started digging a spot of soil in a corner of The Sanctuary. At first, I wasn’t sure what I was doing. I had never planted anything in my life. So I turned to our next-door neighbor for help. Mrs. Green, an elderly woman, was willing to lend a hand. She gave me flower plants from her own garden and explained how to plant them and water the soil. “Don’t be afraid of getting your hands dirty” she said with smile.
At first, my small garden looked messy. The soil was uneven, and the plants were weak. But over the days, I learned more — how to pull out weeds, keep pests away, and take good care of my plants. Gradually, the once lifeless corner of The Sanctuary turned into a lively space.
When my parents returned, I eagerly led them to the backyard.

【答案】1.A
2.B
3.C
根据Spooky Spirits部分中的“Experience exciting entertainment at Spooky Spirits, our tasting event for those aged 21 and over.” 故选A项。
根据表格信息Oct.11—18所在行可定位到Zoo Boo部分;再根据Zoo Boo部分中的“The Zoo will be open until sunset, allowing you to interact with your favorite animals while celebrating the season.”
通读全文,尤其根据文章标题和第一段中的“We’re bringing you a variety of events that promise something for everyone—from family friendly fun to 21 and older happenings.”
根据第一段“A heritage language is a language that isn’t the ‘most powerful’ language of a region, but is still learned by children in their homes (thus, it’s their heritage).(传承语言是指在某个地区并非‘最强势’的语言,但仍由儿童在家中学习(因此是他们的“传承”))”可知,第一段是用解释术语的方法提出主题的。故选B项。
根据第二段首句即主题句“Heritage languages can be someone’s native language, but the two terms aren’t interchangeable. A native language is the language or languages a person learns when they’re very young while heritage languages can be determined by a broad range of social and cultural factors. (传承语言可以是某人的母语,但这两个术语并不完全相同。母语是指一个人在很小的时候学习的语言,而传承语言则受到更广泛的社会和文化因素的影响)”可知,本段主要介绍传承语言和母语之间的差异。故选C项。
6.推理判断题。根据第四段“There are a couple of reasons why heritage languages—and Spanish in particular—tends to drop off from generation to generation. The first one is that the heritage language is less important to get around in society. When a person needs the majority language to go to school, get a job and interact with most people around them, it’s not surprising that the heritage language might seem less important. (传承语言——尤其是西班牙语——之所以在代际之间逐渐流失,有几个原因。首先,在社会中,传承语言的重要性相对较低。当一个人需要使用主流语言上学、找工作,并与周围大多数人交流时,传承语言就显得不那么重要了)”可知,传承语言呈现衰退的其中一个原因是因为这种语言在生活和工作中不是主流语言,使用范围太小,不流行。故选D项。
7.细节理解题。根据最后一段“There are countless people in the world who go out of their way to learn their heritage languages—some learn the heritage language later in life—and help others to do the same. If you’ve ever thought about reconnecting with a heritage language, it’s never too late to get started. There’s no time like the present.(世界上有无数人努力去学习自己的传承语言——有些人是在人生的后期才开始学习的——并帮助他人也这样做。如果你曾经想过重新连接自己的传承语言,现在就是开始的最好时机)”可知,本段介绍了很多人为传承语言的继续存在而做出努力。故选C项。

【详解】8.细节理解题。根据第一段“Just off the Florida Keys lies the world’s third-largest coral reef(珊瑚礁), which was once an energetic habitat for millions of plants and animals. But an outbreak of stony coral tissue loss disease threatens to destroy 20 of the 45 species found there, including larger reef-building corals. (佛罗里达群岛附近有世界第三大珊瑚礁,这里曾经是数百万动植物的栖息地。但是,石珊瑚组织丧失疾病的爆发威胁着那里45种珊瑚中的20种,包括更大的造礁珊瑚。)”可知,世界第三大珊瑚礁在佛罗里达群岛附近,爆发疾病的是珊瑚,珊瑚礁区有数百万动植物。故选C项。
9.推理判断题。根据第二段“‘This disease that is burning through the Florida Keys is an unbelievable event that is happening,' said Andrew Stamper, conservation science manager at Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment. ‘It’s like a wildfire.’ Stamper said that would endanger Florida’s fishing industry and food supply. ‘Unfortunately, we do not know exactly what is causing this,’ he said. (迪士尼动物、科学与环境保护科学经理斯坦珀说,‘正在佛罗里达群岛肆虐的这种疾病是一件令人难以置信的事情。它就像野火一样。’斯坦珀说,这将危及佛罗里达州的渔业和食品供应。他说,‘不幸的是,我们并不确切知道是什么导致了这种情况。’)”可知,珊瑚组织丧失疾病的根源尚不清楚。故选A项。
根据第三段“In order to save the reef, scientists have moved some species hundreds of miles away to a lab in Orlando. Scientists work to simulate breeding(繁殖)conditions in the lab. The conditions are exactly the same as the living conditions of the coral. The work needs a lot of care, effort and attention to detail. LED lights exactly copy the sun and moon cycles. Volunteers feed the coral in water treated to mimic its real habitat.
根据倒数第三段“‘This essentially is a gene bank,’ said Jim Kinsler, leader of SeaWorld Orlando. ‘We’re trying to protect the genetics of these corals so that their offspring (后代) can eventually be returned back to the Florida reef area.’ (奥兰多海洋世界的负责人金斯勒说,这实际上是一个基因库,‘我们正在努力保护这些珊瑚的基因,这样它们的后代最终就能回到佛罗里达的珊瑚礁区。’)”可知,科学家们保护珊瑚基因,希望能使他们的后代重返佛罗里达的珊瑚礁区。最后一段“‘We think the real challenge is just growing them out to a size, so we can test them in those waters, test their disease resistance (抵抗力), and then breed the successful corals by the hundreds of thousands literally,’ said Andrew Walker, president of the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida. (佛罗里达州鱼类和野生动物基金会主席安德鲁·沃克说:‘我们认为真正的挑战只是把它们长到一定的尺寸,这样我们就可以在那些水域测试它们,测试它们的抗病能力,然后培育出成千上万的成功珊瑚。’)”,根据安德鲁·沃克的话可知,研究的目的是实验室能培育出成千上万的有抗病能力的珊瑚,这样它们才有机会重新回到佛罗里达的珊瑚礁区。故选D项。

It spreads through the muscles, and is sweated — unmetabolized(未经新陈代新的) and whole — through the skin. It gets into the heart. It even takes a walk through the brain, and this is the secret of its powers.(乙醇很小,溶于水,所以它会进入各种不应该进入的地方。 故选A。

短语a touch of表示“一点”。故填a。

When my parents returned, I eagerly led them to the backyard. When they saw the lively corner, they were so surprised that they couldn’t say a word for a while. “Why did you lie about the garden ” I asked, voice shaking. My mom sighed, “We were too busy to care for real plants then, but we never thought it’d hurt you.” Dad added, “Your small garden is lovely. It shows what real life looks like.” I told them that I couldn’t stand the fake garden. I explained how I had learned to plant and take care of them with the help of Mrs. Green. My parents listened quietly, and I could see the wheels turning in their minds.
Then my parents agreed to give the garden a new try. What made me happy was that my parents finally understood my feelings. From then on, we worked together to take care of the whole garden. We planted more flowers and vegetables, and soon our backyard became a place full of life and color, which was much better than the old “Sanctuary”.

An experiment which saw salad seeds sent into space has given hope for the future of growing food on another planet, according to a recently-published study.
The findings have appeared after two kilograms of seeds spent six months on board the International Space Station (ISS) with the astronaut, Tim Peake, as part of his Principia mission.
There, the seeds could have absorbed up to 100 times more radiation (辐射) than on Earth while being influenced by the violent shaking from the stresses of space travel.
When the seeds returned to Earth in 2016, 600,000 children from schools across Britain took part in an experiment, supported by the UK Space Agency, to plant them and monitor their growth, comparing it to that of seeds that had remained on Earth.
The results showed that, while the space seeds grew more slowly and were more sensitive to ageing, they were still able to survive.
Peake said, “When humans travel to Mars, they will need to find ways to feed themselves, and this research helps us understand some of the biology of seed storage and germination (发芽) which will be important for future space missions.”
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) tasked 8,600 schools and groups across Britain with taking part in the controlled study and recording their results as a scientist would.
It was part of a project called Rocket Science, led by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, in partnership with the UK Space Agency.
RHS manager Alana Cama said, “The Rocket Science experiment opened a window into space biology and allowed young people to be at the forefront of creative research.”
“This research project did more than just inspire; it furthered our understanding of the challenges around growing plants in unusual environments and the possibility of growing food on long-term space missions in the future. Inspiring a new generation of botanists and biologists will remain our goal to enrich everyone’s lives through plants.”
4.What do the findings of the experiment indicate
A.Salad seeds sent into space turned out to be a failure.
B.Astronauts successfully grew salad seeds on Mars.
C.The future of growing plants in space looks bright.
D.The radiation makes it impossible for plants to survive.
5.Which word can be filled in the blank to complete the research steps
carry the seeds into space → bring them back to Earth → ______ the growing state → make comparisons
A.Update. B.Observe. C.Protect. D.Improve.
6.Unlike those on Earth, the seeds sent into space ______.
A.can grow 100 times larger in size B.provide enough food for astronauts
C.stop growing when returning to Earth D.are more likely to show signs of ageing
7.What can we learn from what Alana Cama said
A.Growing plants in unusual environments is no longer a challenging task.
B.A new generation of botanists and biologists takes the lead in the research.
C.The project inspires the interests of the young generation in creative fields.
D.The exploration of growing food in space is the central mission in the future.
Trying to grasp the brain’s complexity is a little like trying to comprehend the vastness of space—it feels way beyond our range of understanding. Luckily, by mapping a small part of a mouse brain down to an amazing level of detail, new research could help us grasp a piece of the neurological cosmos(神经宇宙) inside our heads.
Though the volume of brain matter analyzed was barely the size of a grain of sand, the researchers still had to describe the relationships between 84,000 neurons(神经元) via half a billion synapse(突触) connections and 5.4 kilometers of neural wiring. The incredible work took 9 years to complete from start to finish, and involved more than 150 researchers and 22 institutions along the way, including representatives from Princeton University, Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, and the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle.
What is unique about this data is that it took both the structure and the function into consideration within one experiment. That means scientists were able to see not just the layout of the wiring in the brain, but also the way those wires communicate and work. The mouse used in the study was shown videos while moving on a running machine, with the scientists monitoring its brain activity.
The mouse’s brain was then divided into 28,000 separate layers(层). The team used a combination of AI techniques and human checks to unlock the network of neuronal wires, identify connections, and then put the knot together again.
This wiring diagram of the brain is known as the connectome. “The connectome is the beginning of the digital transformation of brain science,” says H. Sebastian Seung from Princeton University. “It’s also a promising step forward in the study of brain diseases, including dementia(痴呆症). Digitizing some or all of the brain, and understanding exactly how it’s put together, means an improved understanding of how it can go wrong. The technologies developed by this project will give us our first chance to really identify some kind of abnormal pattern of connectivity that gives rise to a disorder.”
8.What do the figures in paragraph 2 stress
A.The importance of cooperation in scientific research.
B.The differences between mouse and human brain structures.
C.The advantage of AI over human researchers in brain mapping.
D.The complexity of even a tiny part of the brain’s neural network.
9.What is the most remarkable achievement of the new research
A.It integrated structural and functional analysis.
B.It monitored brain activity during physical exercise.
C.It combined AI and human checks to analyze brain layers.
D.It identified abnormal connectivity patterns in brain diseases.
10.What is Seung’s attitude towards the finding of the connectome
A.Doubtful. B.Mixed. C.Dismissive. D.Positive.
11.What is a suitable title for the text
A.AI’s Role in Modern Neuroscience
B.The Development of Neural Network Research
C.A Breakthrough in Linking Brain Structure and Function
D.The Journey to Cure Dementia Through Connectome Research

As deadly wildfires continue to sweep through California, it now seems important to understand how wildfires work. 37
Though the exact source of wildfires is unclear, authorities have claimed that 95% of fires in California are started by people. Experts aren’t yet able to forecast wildfire outbreaks. 38 Firefighters refer to it as the fire triangle: fuel, oxygen, and a heat source. Four fifths of wildfires are started by people, but drought and strong winds can create the perfect conditions for a disaster.
Worldwide, wildfire smoke causes 339,000 deaths per year, according to estimates. 39 Potentially deadly airborne, microscopic particles (微粒) can thicken the blood. Smoke also contains carbon monoxide, causing long-lasting damage to the heart.
40 In northern forests, which store more carbon than any other terrestrial (陆地的) ecosystem, climate change is causing wildfires to occur more frequently, further speeding up the emission of carbon and worsening global warming.
However, wildlife tends to have a very different relationship with fire. 41 For example, some birds will fly in to feed on bark beetles (树皮甲虫) in dead trees. That’s not to say, all wild animals call fire a friend — there are some who can’t escape the quickly spreading flames. Slow-moving animals such as koalas, whose nature is to hide into a tree, may end up trapped. In this case, wildlife falls victim to climate change tragically.
A.And it is more important to know how to prevent wildfires.
B.Besides health problems, forest fires actually have the ability to heat up the entire planet.
C.Some have evolved to live with it, and some even grow better after fires.
D.Wildfires have damaging effects on the habitats of wildlife.
E.However, there are three conditions that must be present in order for a wildfire to burn.
F.Sharp increases in asthma (哮喘) attacks have been reported when smoke blankets the places where people live.
G.Of equal importance is to realize the long-term effects of wildfires on our health and the environment.

When I was a youngster, my mother would say, “Go outside and play.” And I would, with all the other kids in the neighborhood. We learned a lot about nature and ourselves playing outside. For one thing, we quickly learned to recognize poison ivy.
A few years ago I was fortunate to be asked to join the advisory committee of Children and Nature Network (C&NN). This is a growing organization created by author Richard Louv. His book, Last Child in the Woods, became a best-seller as people realized we have a generation of children so connected to electronics that they are losing their connection to nature. As Louv writes, “We are fast approaching a generation of children where no child will have played outdoors.”
Nature is more than plants and animals we observe each day. Nature is a shared spirit of being with all things. Through nature we learn that everything is cyclical, that life begins and life passes, and that every life is in balance with all other life forms, and each one helps the other fulfill its essential purpose.
My neighbors embody the actions and nature philosophy that Louv suggests in his book. They plant, they play, and they teach their children that nature has her purpose. They live out the philosophy that we are part of nature, and when we abuse (滥用) her, we abuse ourselves.
Spending time outdoors both in loneliness and at play is an important education for children. The outdoors encourages an inner connection to nature, and if you stay there for a little while in silence, you will see all the natural connections. You will connect to the chlorophyll (叶绿素) of plants, the flight of insects and birds, the awareness of mammals (哺乳动物), and especially the knowing of the earth herself.
In Shakespeare’s As You Like It, the Duke in the Forest of Arden says: “... there are tongues in trees, books in running brooks, sermons (诉说) in stones, and good in everything.”
42.How did the author learn about nature and herself when she was young
43.What problem does Richard Louv point out in his book
44.How do you understand the underlined sentence “when we abuse her, we abuse ourselves” in Paragraph 4
45.What benefits can we get from spending time outdoors
46.What can you learn from the Duke’s words in Shakespeare’s book

Sebastian Seung from Princeton University. ‘It’s also a promising step forward in the study of brain diseases, including dementia(痴呆症). Digitizing some or all of the brain, and understanding exactly how it’s put together, means an improved understanding of how it can go wrong. The technologies developed by this project will give us our first chance to really identify some kind of abnormal pattern of connectivity that gives rise to a disorder.’(大脑的这张接线图被称为连接组。

Julie’s heart swelled with gratitude as she reached out for her wallet.“Thank you so much!” she exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion.“It’s no big deal,” the driver said, handing over the wallet with a gentle reminder.“Always check before you leave, Miss.” Julie nodded, her eyes welling up with tears of thankfulness. Then swiftly, she took the wallet and opened it, anxiously scanning for a particular item.Under the driver’s somewhat puzzled gaze, Julie pulled out a small, faded photo and held it close to her chest, relief washing over her.
Julie told the driver that the photo meant so much for her.It was a photo of her late grandmother, the only family member she had left after her parents had passed away.Upon learning about this, the confusion on the driver’s face gradually faded, replaced by a look of understanding and sympathy. With a smile, he said to Julie, “I’m glad I could help you, and I hope this photo continues to bring you strength and comfort.” At that moment, Julie deeply appreciated the warmth and kindness between people and felt a renewed sense of hope.

Dr. Joseph Needham (1900-1995) was an excellent biochemist and social activist who dedicated most of his life to the history of science and technology in China.
He was born in London on December 9th, 1900. He entered Cambridge University in 1918. Soon he was attracted to the evolving modern science of biochemistry, and received a Ph. D.in Chemical Embryology (胚胎学) in 1924. His research on this subject was so widely acknowledged that it earned him recognition as the “father of chemical embryology”.
In 1937, he met Lu Gwei-Dien, a young graduate from China, at Cambridge, which completely changed his life. She challenged him to explore the great contributions of ancient Chinese science and technology to the rise of modern science. He started to study Chinese and later mastered it so well that he could easily read classical Chinese texts.
Joseph Needham was the first Western scholar to conduct a comprehensive and comparative (对比的) study of the history of Chinese science and technology related to the rise of modern science. By citing many modern scientific and technological advances that originated in ancient China, he powerfully dispelled a long-held view in the West that China neither had science nor made any contribution to modern science.
He, together with his many distinguished co-workers, demonstrated that China and the Near East had made many outstanding contributions in the transformation of ancient to modern science. His monumental work Science and Civilisation in China has been characterized as “perhaps the greatest single act of historical synthesis (整合) and inter-cultural communication ever attempted…”
In one of his poems he describes himself as:
Having written much, whether well or ill. I know not.
But with devout (虔诚的) intention for the healing of the nations.
This intention makes his work not simply impressive but important. As a scholar, he will always be remembered as a bridge-builder between the East and the West.
4.What can we learn about Joseph’s personal background
A.He earned a Ph. D.at the age of 37. B.He moved to London after graduation.
C.He received high praise for his research. D.He was devoted to studying British history.
5.What did Lu Gwei-Dien advise Joseph to do
A.Make great changes to his lifestyle.
B.Read more classical Chinese works.
C.Work with her teammates in biochemistry.
D.Study ancient Chinese science and technology.
6.What does the underlined word “dispelled” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Challenged. B.Supported. C.Shared. D.Stated.
7.What is Joseph’s intention of writing Science and Civilisation in China
A.To heal and bridge different countries.
B.To gain personal fame and recognition.
C.To provide entertainment for the readers.
D.To document important historical events.
The past 50 years have not been good for honeybees. Their numbers have greatly reduced throughout the world, and now a research project by the American University of Maryland is showing that bee lifespans (寿命) have fallen by as much as 50% since the 1970s.
Most previous bee studies have focused on environmental factors. The Maryland scientists, on the other hand, wanted to find out how long bees can survive in a controlled lab environment. They collected bee pupae (蛹) of workers that were less than 24 hours old to study how long they could survive without influence from the outside world.
The scientists placed the bees in customized containers, feeding them different types of water such as tap water, demineralized water, and sugar water. They found that the water type had no effect on lifespans, which were an average of 17.7 days.
Comparing their results with studies from the 2000s, scientists found bees had survived longer back then. Further comparing data from similar studies beginning in 1969, they realized that a honeybee’s average lifespan has been halved. Studies from the 1970s had an average bee lifespan of 34.4 days. The differences seemed related neither to food nor to conditions and surroundings. And because the scientists collected the bees before they became adults, they could rule out external factors such as chemical use or lack of food.
The scientists believe that the cause is in bee genetics (遗传学), and may be related to modern beekeeping practices, especially the speed at which beekeepers replace their bees with new ones. Normally, beekeepers will replace bees when they age naturally and die. But over the past 14 years, reports from American beekeepers have recorded annual losses of bee colonies (群) of 30%—40%. This might be because beekeepers are replacing their bees more frequently, as the bees die earlier.
Further studies are planned to find out whether this is a global trend, if it can be proved that this is to do with bee genetics, and to find strategies that might slow the losses of bee colonies, and so restore the decreasing lifespans of honeybees.
8.Why did the researchers collect bee pupae rather than adult bees
A.They were easier to control in the lab.
B.They had the same remaining lifespans.
C.They could be fed with three types of water.
D.They had limited contact with the outside world.
9.What can be concluded from the comparison of the studies over the years
A.Food for bees was not enough in the 1970s.
B.Surroundings have affected bee lifespans.
C.Earlier bees survived longer.
D.High bee losses have led to fewer beekeepers.
10.What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A.Effective modern beekeeping practices.
B.Higher replacement rates of aging bees.
C.Challenges American beekeepers are facing.
D.Possible causes of honeybee lifespan fall.
11.What will most probably be done next
A.Finding other ways to raise bees.
B.Conducting a worldwide survey.
C.Studying more similar studies from the past.
D.Explain the influence of losses of bee colonies.
In a study published in Nature Communications, researchers from the University of Zurich told 50 people they’d be receiving about $100. Half of the people were asked to spend that money on themselves, and half were asked to spend it on someone they knew. Before giving out any money, the researchers brought everyone into the lab and asked them to think about a friend they’d like to give a gift to and how much they would spend. They then performed functional MRI scans (扫描) to get to know activity in three parts of the brain related to social behavior, generosity, happiness and decision-making.
Their choices-and their brain activity-seemed to depend on how they had promised to spend the money earlier. Those who had promised to spend money on other people tended to make more generous decisions throughout the experiment (实验). They also had more interaction between the parts of the brain related to altruism (无私) and happiness, and they reported higher levels of happiness after the experiment was over.
Another piece of good news was that planning to give away just a little bit of money had the same effects on happiness as giving away a lot. “At least in our study, the amount spent did not matter,” says lead author Philippe Tobler. “Even little things have a beneficial effect-like bringing coffee to one’s workmates.”
It’s not yet clear how long these warm feelings last after being generous. But studies have shown that older people who are generous tend to have better health, says Tobler, and other research has suggested that spending money on others can be effective at lowering blood pressure. “Moreover there is a positive connection between helping others and life expectancy (预期寿命),” he adds.
Next time you think that the best way to make yourself feel better is to buy yourself a treat, consider that the opposite is likely true. “It is worth giving it a try, even if you think it would not work,” Tobler says. “Repeated practice is probably needed so that giving becomes second nature.”
12.What did the researchers find out about those promising to spend money on other people
A.They were much happier. B.They had less brain activity.
C.They were slower at making decisions. D.They experienced higher levels of stress.
13.What does Tobler want to explain by mentioning bringing coffee to workmates
A.It isn’t hard to behave generously.
B.Being generous will pay off in the end.
C.The amount of generosity did not matter.
D.Small acts of generosity can be seen everywhere.
14.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us
A.Ways to show generosity.
B.Health benefits of being generous.
C.Reasons for performing acts of generosity.
D.Influences generous people have on others.
15.What does Tobler suggest people do in the last paragraph
A.Practice giving and make it a habit.
B.Don’t expect anything in return when giving.
C.Don’t believe happiness depends on a good treat.
D.Perform something good even if it may have a bad result.
16.In which part of a magazine can we probably find this text
A.Sports. B.Science. C.Education. D.Travel.

Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published, it s vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript (原稿). 37 No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
I keep two reference books close by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus (同义词词典).I don t trust my laptop s spellchecker. 38 Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I m old fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers.I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus.
39 It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced.
In addition, I have an old two volume copy of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence.Of course, with its 2,672 pages, it s not exactly short. It contains around 163,000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases. 40 However, if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there s nothing better.
For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson s Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755.“To make dictionaries is dull (乏味) work,” wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of “dull”. 41 A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.
B.It takes no account of the context.
C.But I still don t want to replace them.
D.But a dictionary can be a pleasure to read.
E.Of course, a dictionary is not only for spelling.
F.That means good grammar and no spelling mistakes.
G.Dictionaries don t always give you enough information.

Why do you pull yourself out of bed every morning to go to work or school What does it take to make you feel like your contribution in those places is truly worthwhile Knowing what motivates you can help you find meaning in your work and make efforts to reach your goals.
Psychologists have a wide variety of ways of describing and differentiating motivations because people care about so many different things. Psychologist David McClelland identified three main motivations for people: achievement (the feeling of success), affiliation (close relationships) and power (the ability to influence the world). Authors Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton identified 23 motivations, including creativity, challenge and learning.
Some motivations, such as money, social position and praise, are external; these are the tools bosses typically use to encourage their employees to do better. Other motivations, including fun, personal growth and feeling like one’s work is significant, come from within the person doing the action. These ideals, called internal motivations, tend to be more reliable than external ones because they represent things that can never be taken away.
Since a wide variety of motivations exist, it’s important to understand which ones are persuasive to you. Trying to motivate yourself in a way that doesn’t appeal to you will make it difficult to convince yourself to work. When choosing a career, think about what motivates you and make decisions accordingly. If you are motivated by overcoming challenges, look for a career where you can continually try hard to reach a higher level.
People motivated by external rewards sometimes struggle to meet goals they set for themselves that no one else knows about. They can solve this problem by creating external rewards for their personal goals such as finding a friend to hold them accountable.
When you know what motivates you, you will be able to motivate yourself to do the things necessary to succeed. And if you are a leader, knowing what motivates your team will enable you to help them do the same.
42.Why is it important for people to be clear of their motivations
43.How can the motivations be classified according to McClelland
44.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Since the external motivations involve money, social position and praise, which are often used as tools by bosses, they are more dependable than the internal ones.
45.Please briefly present what motivates you in your life and how it works. (about 40 words)

If you want to be published, it s vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript. No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
