National Parks You Should Never Miss
Since the U. S. National Park Service (NPS) started keeping records in 1904, its mountain landscapes, seaside wildernesses, and high desert acres have registered more than 16 billion visits. Some of the best-known parks experienced record crowds in 2024. The following national parks are decent travelling and visiting destinations, but they offer just a glimpse of the variety to be found in the 429 park units of the NPS.
Joshua Tree National Park
Drawn by outsized rock formations and distinctive yucca brevifolia plants, 3,270,404 travelers entered Joshua Tree National Park in 2024. It offers hiking, rock-climbing, and star-gazing in the Sonora and Mojave deserts east of Los Angeles, California.
Grand Teton National Park
The peaks of the Teton Range, solemn and imposing, tower nearly 7,000 feet over the Wyoming valley floor, making them some of the boldest geological statements in the Rockies. Grand Teton National Park’s jewel-like lakes, blue and white glaciers, and naked granite (花岗岩) summits received 3,417,106 visitors in 2024.
Yosemite National Park
Nearly 4 million visitors came to this national geopark of granite cliffs and towering waterfalls in 2024. Most spent time in Yosemite Valley, a mile-wide, seven-mile-long canyon that was cut by a river and then widened and deepened by glacial action.
Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park — the world’s first national park — was visited by more than 4. 5 million people in 2024. The vast reserve — covering 2. 2 million acres in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana — has craggy (陡峭的) peaks, explosive geysers, alpine lakes, deep forests, and a wealth of wild animals. The stars are bison, bears, sheep, moose, and wolves.

Growing up, I disliked writing. It was the last thing I wanted to do and it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place. In high school, I hated writing essays. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my scattered thoughts into fluent sentences and I often received papers marked with numerous corrections. I began to wonder if I was simply not cut out for writing. And that was OK. I didn’t have to be good at everything.
I focused instead on my love for math and science. I took comfort there, knowing objective truth could be found if I searched methodically. In college, I studied engineering and joined a research lab to gain hands-on experience. My first project was to improve the efficiency of a magnetic component. Despite initial disappointing results, I continued through numerous designs. Eventually, we developed a design that halved energy losses. I was delighted — until my professor told me to write that research paper.
I knew that if I wanted to become a researcher, I would need to spend time penning papers. But I was scared of failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. We defined a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper covered in red marks. He explained that red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires revising your work, often several times. Suddenly it occurred to me, “Hadn’t I done the same thing when I was searching for an efficient design ”
I polished my paper’s outline into sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback. Though my first draft wasn’t perfect, with help, I enjoyed the process of improving it. Writing has since become one of my favorite parts of research, helping me organize my thoughts. I’ve even started writing popular science articles, which I never could have imagined during my early struggles with essays.
4. What did the author initially think of writing
A. A piece of cake. B. A ray of sunshine.
C. A nut hard to crack. D. A diamond in the rough.
5. What was the author’s main challenge in the research project
A. Designing the magnetic component.
B. Cooperating with the research team.
C. Collecting the experimental data.
D. Writing the research paper.
6. What did the author learn from her writing and research
A. Both require trial and error. B. Both consume time and money.
C. Both offer promotion and reputation. D. Both involve burden and stress.
7. What helped the author improve writing
A. Discovering objective standards in writing.
B. Following good examples of other students.
C. Publishing several academic papers successfully.
D. Constantly working on writing and improving.
C
A can of soft drink and two large eggs may have a similar number of calories, but the eggs will provide us with protein, vitamins and other nutrients, and satisfy our hunger, while a fizzy drink provides little more than calories. The important concept here is nutrient density (密度), which refers to the number of nutrients we take in for each calorie consumed. No one would suggest replacing sweet drinks with eggs, but what can we do to increase nutrient density in our diet
“Have you had your five a day ” on British supermarket shelves is a reminder to customers to ensure they are eating at least five slices of fruits and vegetables per day, promoting a healthy diet. Many countries have launched similar campaigns to encourage people to eat more healthily. Fresh, natural produce is usually very dense in nutrients. Eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables is important, so some advice focuses on including different colors of food in our diets. “Eating a rainbow” could be one way to get more nutrients.
Other advice recommends that we should be more adventurous in what we eat. Cooking food that we haven’t eaten before can lead us to use ingredients that we don’t usually consume. This can give us a wider range of nutrients. It’s not just about fruit and vegetables. Even flavorings such as garlic, ginger or turmeric can have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while also leading people to use less salt. Dairy products such as milk and cheese, are high in calcium, while in limited amounts, meat can be a good source of protein.
If you’re not feeling that adventurous, then swapping food items can be beneficial. Choosing wholegrain bread or rice instead of white bread or rice can increase fibre intake. Unsalted nuts provide more nutrients than snacks such as crisps. Possibly surprisingly, popcorn is a wholegrain snack that is high in fibre.
So, fresh fruit and vegetables, swapping the worst things, and just a little bit more adventure could be the secret to a more nutritious diet.
8. What does “Eating a rainbow” suggest
A. Focusing on low-calorie foods.
B. Avoiding white and black foods.
C. Adding variously colored foods to what we eat.
D Including rainbow-colored snacks in our diets.
9. What can happen if we are more adventurous in our food choices
A. We reduce calories in our diets. B. We eat more fruits and vegetables.
C. We consume more unhealthy food. D. We gain access to diverse nutrients.
10. Which of the following is the healthiest swap
A. Swapping white rice for wholegrain rice.
B. Swapping two eggs for a can of soft drink.
C. Swapping popcorn for wholegrain bread.
D. Swapping unsalted nuts for white bread.
11. Which of the following serves as the best title
A. Eating a balanced diet is essential
B. Nutrient density is key to a healthy diet
C. Eggs are a better choice than sugary drinks
D Fruits and vegetables are always the best choice
D
A technology with roots going back to the Bronze Age may offer a fast and inexpensive approach to helping achieve the United Nations climate goal of net zero emissions by 2050, according to recent Stanford-led research.
The technology involves fitting heat-absorbing bricks in an insulated (隔热的) container, where they can store heat generated by solar or wind power for later use in industrial processes. The heat can then be released when needed by passing air through channels in the piles of “firebricks”, thus allowing cement, steel, glass, and paper factories to run on renewable energy even when wind and sunshine are unavailable. These systems are a form of thermal energy (热能) storage. The bricks are made from the same materials as the bricks that lined primitive kilns (窑) thousands of years ago.
Batteries can store electricity and provide it to generate heat on demand. “The differences between firebrick storage and battery storage are that the firebricks store heat rather than electricity and that their cost is one-tenth the cost of batteries,” said lead study author Mark Z. Jacobson, a professor at Stanford University. “The materials are basically just the components of dirt. ”
The researchers adopted computer models to compare costs, land needs, health impacts, and emissions involved in two scenarios for an imagined future where 149 countries in 2050 are using renewable sources for all energy purposes. In one scenario, firebricks provide 90% of industrial process heat. In the other, there’s zero adoption of firebricks or other forms of thermal energy storage. The researchers found the scenario with firebricks could cut costs by $1.27 trillion across the 149 countries, while reducing the demand for electrical energy and energy storage capacity from batteries.
Jacobson’s focus on firebricks is relatively new, inspired by a desire to identify effective solutions that could be adopted quickly. “Here I can see a substantial benefits at low cost from multiple angles, from helping reduce air pollution deaths to making it easier to turn the world to clean energy,” he said.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. How firebrick storage technology works. B. How firebricks are produced sustainably.
C. What thermal energy means scientifically. D. What thermal energy storage is used to do.
13. What advantages do firebrick have over battery
A. Firebrick can store heat and cost less. B. Firebrick can generate more electricity.
C. Firebrick can provide heat more quickly. D. Firebrick is made of more advanced materials.
14. Why are the computer models adopted
A. To test the durability of firebricks. B. To cut the costs of firebricks.
C. To explore the effectiveness of firebricks. D. To test energy storage capacity of firebricks.
15. What might be a suitable title for the text
A. The usage of firebricks can replace batteries.
B. Embracing renewable electricity becomes possible.
C. Innovative systems turn heat into electricity cheaply.
D. An old technology can aid the switch to clean energy.

I was taking a trip from Texas to the Bahamas for a vacation, having prepared for this trip for a long time. After packing all my belongings and heading to the airport, I could only think about all the pleasant times I would have at the tropical(热带)island. I already had everything planned out, first I would go diving, then visit the queen’s stairs, and eventually go swimming with the dolphins. The thoughts made my heart race; I could even smell the fresh ocean breeze right now.
Finally, I made it into the airport, just in time to make my flight. As I boarded the plane, I had a smile stretched along my face. I slid right into my seat, sitting mid row right in the middle of two other passengers. One of them was a fairly attractive young female and the other was an elderly lady who looked to be in her 70s. Her hair was as gray as a thunderstorm cloud and the wrinkles on her skin matched the ones on my shirt.
“We should depart in about five minutes,” The pilot responded. At that time, I had no idea what was soon incoming after this announcement. I used to fly with my mom a whole bunch of times as a kid, the people beside me seeming to be taking it well as well.
I went to sleep and woke up to various screaming and yelling on the plane; everything was so chaotic that it looked straight out of a movie scene. The lights in the airplane started flickering(闪烁), and I could feel the bumps the plane was making. Was I still dreaming I looked to my left and the seat was empty! Sweat started to run down my face. The young female was gone!
“Mommy!” A little girl screamed. I couldn’t control it anymore and tears started rolling down my face. The plane shook more, seeming the end was nearing.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are experiencing an extreme clear air turbulence(乱流),” the pilot explained. “The plane is being adjusted. Please remain seated.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右。
2. 按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Paragraph 1:
The pilot tried to take control of the situation at hand, but in vain(徒劳). The passengers were in a state of great panic, including the young female. So scared was she that she screamed “I’m going to die,” making others more panicked. At that time, the elderly lady on my right spoke out, “Anyone not wearing a seat belt is putting you at a higher risk. We should have a firm belief in the crew, rather than cause disturbance and inconvenience,” which won some passengers’ approval. More passengers began to be well organized automatically, arranging everything in order.
Paragraph 2:
Eventually, all the passengers calmed down. They returned to their seats quickly, keeping the seat belts fastened. I held hands with the female and the elderly lady. A sense of comfort and warmth rushed over me. After what seemed to be a century, the plane eventually turned normal. All the people cheered up. Experiencing turbulence on board can be frightening, just as life is filled with unexpected incidents. As long as we keep calm and optimistic, we will have enough power to overcome obstacles.(162w)
